Hundreds of thousands of young immigrants are resting a bit easier this morning after the Supreme Court issued a ruling that allows the socalled dreamers to stay in the u. S. A high court rejected the Trump Administrations attempt to end the daca program. It protects about 650,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the u. S. As children from deportation. Jan crawford is at the Supreme Court. Jan, good morning. Well, it has been a rough week for the president here at this newly conservative Supreme Court. Two major losses yesterday on one of the key issues, immigration, that he built his whole campaign around. The 54 decision was written by the conservative chief justice john roberts, joined by the courts four liberal justices and said the Trump Administrations decision to rescind the obamaera prom was arbitrary, capricious and failed to consider the hardship to daca residents. Justice Cairns Thomas called it an effort to avoid a politically controversial but legally correct decision. It comes on the heels of mondays landmark decision in that transgender and gay rights case and yesterday on twitter, President Trump lashed out. He called the decisions horrible and politically charged. And he quickly pivoted to november saying we need more justices. Vote trump 2020. Now the ruling sends the case back to the department of Homeland Security to try again to justify why it should end this program. That is unlikely to happen before november, which puts the issue of immigration, the makeup of the Supreme Court squarely in the november election. To tony . It sure does. Jan crawford, thank you. While daca supporters celebrated outside the Supreme Court yesterday, many socalled dreamers acknowledged there will be more legal battles to stay in the united states. Cbs news contributor Maria Elena Salinas spoke to some of them to get their reaction. So they went from celebration to more concern. What did you learn . Good morning, tony. While dreamers across the country are breathing a sigh of relief knowing their safety, their jobs and their access to school is secure for now, what we heard the refrain we heard over and over again is at this fight isnt over. What is your life like living in limbo . When i graduate college, i know theres uncertainty every month of whether there will be a decision. And that living that uncertainty has definitely been a huge overwhelming feeling every day for me. Knowing that i its not just me but also for my family. Reporter that fear of life without daca was shared by ricardo aca who came to the u. S. As a teenager. I was living in the shadows. I was trying to get by. I was lying because i guess at the time, you dont know what your status could potentially affect your entire family. Reporter aca marched against the Trump Administrations decision to end the program. And he hopes the courts ruling is a message to those who are struggling. Before i had come out of the shadows, i didnt have a community. I didnt know other folks with daca. I think for those folks that might not have been eligible, i think they know that were fighting because i think everyone deserves respect and dignity and i think thats essentially the goal. Reporter guevara and lopez feel relieved but like aca, they know the fight isnt over. My family and i belong here. My community definitely belongs here, and that we are here and like we are going to continue our fight for permanent solution. Reporter these dreamers told us the original dreamers are their parents who came to this country in search of a better life so theyll continue to push for a permanent solution on capitol hill. Also yesterdays Supreme Court decision could open the door to thousands of young undocumented immigrants who had originally not qualified for the program or had been excluded from the program during the Trump Administration. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Nationwide protests over Police Brutality are putting new scrutiny on the role of officers who witness fellow officers using brutal or unnecessary force on suspects. Former buffalo new york Police Officer cariol horne was fired in 2008 after she says she stopped a white officers chokehold on a black suspect in handcuffs. Now the Buffalo City Council is asking the new York State Attorney general to investigate hornes firing. National correspondent Jericka Duncan spoke with horne. Good morning. Good morning. I covered the case of cariol horne when i was a reporter in buffalo. At the time, it didnt get National Interest or headlines but now you can see theres been a renewed interest in the case that ended cariol hornes career. Looking at the video, it was very upsetting. And i felt that if one of those officers had stepped in that he would be alive today. Reporter cariol horne, a nearly 20year veteran of the Buffalo Police department, says the image of george floyd dying at the hands of police is triggering. In 2006, thenofficer horne made headlines after intervening when she says fellow officer Greg Kwiatkowski was choking a black suspect. I couldnt breathe. What was it that day that made you step . Neil mack looked like he was about to die. So i stepped in. He possibly could have. He was handcuffed and being choked. Reporter the Buffalo Police department brought disciplinary charges against horne and fired her in 2008, a few months before she was eligible to receive a full pension. Greg kwiatkowski sued horne and her lawyer for defamation. They found statements were defamatory and false, including that horne saved the life of a suspect who was already in handcuffs and was being choked out by officer Greg Kwiatkowski. Neil mack, the suspect at the center of the nearly 14yearold case maintains to this day that cariol horne saved his life. He was choking me. I was handcuffed. Cariol horne said youre killing him and reached out and tried to grab his hand from around my neck. Reporter they found no wrongdoing by the Buffalo Police officers involved in his arrest. As for Greg Kwiatkowski, he was sentenced to four months in federal prison for using unlawful and Unreasonable Force against four black teenagers. Unlawful. Unnecessary force. The same thing that i said he did. Reporter horne said shes turned her pain into activism. When she saw the recent video of Buffalo Police pushing a 75yearold protester to the ground, she says it was yet another trigger. So now if they can push the 75yearold white man when its still daylight out, just think of what they do to our young black kids at nighttime. Reporter horne says these days shes at peace because she stands by what she did. Still, she broke down when i asked her how this has impacted her children. Its important for me to be truthful because this has been a lot of years. So when you talk about, where does the raw emotion come from, its because ive fought all these years and tried to keep it together for my children. Horne is now fighting for her full pension. Shes also pushing legislation called cariols law which would protect police if they intervene from being retaliated against. As for the Buffalo Police department, they tell cbs this morning that in 2006, officer horne requested that her case be reviewed by an independent arbitrator. The arbitrator recommended termination after lengthy hearings, and the Police Commissioner at the time followed that recommendation. Former Buffalo Police lieutenant Greg Kwiatkowski could not be reached, and his former lawyers did not respond to our request for comment. Anthony . Jericka, thank you. Such a complicated and, obviously, still a lot of questions in that case. The killings happened more than five decades after enslaved people learned they were free. Last month marked 99 years since a white mob burned a wealthy black community to the ground. An estimated 300 black men, women and children died that day. Omar villafranca went to tulsa back in december. Now he has an update. You have a clothing store. Clothing store. Grocery stores. Restaurants. Reporter brendas grandparents survived the race massacre but their multiple businesses in the tulsa neighborhood of greenwood did not. You are successful. You have homes. You have your businesses, and all of a sudden, you dont. Its devastating. Reporter in the 1920s, greenwood was referred to as black wall street because it had many successful blackowned businesses. The violence began in may 1921 when a white mob clashed with several armed black men who had gathered to protect a shoe shiner unjustly accused of assaulting a white woman. This rarely seen footage shared exclusively with cbs news shows the aftermath of the massacre. Thick black smoke billowing out of a church. Burned homes and businesses still smoldering. And black tulsans lining up for help. Up to 300 black men, women and children were killed. We lost our economic base. We lost the opportunity to have generational wealth. Reporter photo journalist kavin ross feels the same. His greatgrandfather survived the massacre but his juke joint was destroyed. What did your family lose in the race massacre . My family lost a legacy of the spirit of entrepreneurship. And you think that business would have been passed down . I strongly believe that our freeway sits upon my inheritance today. Reporter we first met ross in december and caught up with him again thursday ahead of President Trumps rally. I see youre wearing a make greenwood great again. Do you think greenwood can be great again . We may not have the bricks and mortars of yesteryear but we know what was here. Its hopeful. Reporter in july, archaeologists plan to excavate a cemetery where evidence has been found of a possible mass grave. For decades, the murders were forgotten by history. But in recent years, descendants and scientists have worked to uncover the truth which includes the greatness of black wall street before the murders. These black folk were able to, even in the face of injustice and post slavery economics, find some way to turn pain into possibility. Anthropologist marlow hall is studying what greenwood was before it was set on fire. Trauma still lingers in the social, spiritual, political, economic consciousness. So whats next is for us to remember beyond the trauma who black wall street was and how they did it and to push the story forward. Reporter the story currently shows disparity lingers. Data analyzed by Human Rights Watch found that black residents in tulsa are 2. 3 times more likely to be arrested than white residents. The Unemployment Rate for black tulsans is more than two times the rate of white tulsans, and citywide, the black poverty rate is 34 compared to the white poverty rate of 13 . But hall believes knowing about black wall street can help inspire future generations. I believe that black tulsans are in the infant phase of their evolution and transformation. The potential of tauulsa in the black community. There are celebrations and concerts planned here for juneteenth. And blackowned businesses are starting to come back here to black wall street. But the ultimate goal, as mr. Ross said, is to make greenwood great again. Gayle . Hear, hear to that. Omar, thank you for that update. The blaze is now the largest actively burning fire in the country and is only 5 contained. Fires are also burning out of control near tucson and the grand Canyon National park. Hot and dusty, dry conditions combined with gusty winds are feeding those flames, and those conditions are expected to last for a while, gayle. As you know, arizona has seen a spike in covid19 cases. So officials are worried that evacuations could potentially lead to more infections. We have been reporting about the spike. Listen, the weather conditions, thats the last thing they need. As tony pointed out, its the first day of summer, yay for that. Not so good in arizona where the temperatures are heating up and no rain. Youve got something about an infamous bus, whats that about . All right. An abandoned bus that was made famous by the john crackour book and movie into the wild has been airlifted near a National Park in alaska. Is there anybody here . [ echo ] guess not. Over the years, many tourists tried to reach the bus where Christopher Mccandless spent 114 days before dying of starvation in 1992. Now many of those tourists needed to be rescued, and some even died. Yesterday the Alaska National guard removed the bus using a heavy lift helicopter. The bus is being stored at a secure site. Discussions are under way for it to possibly go on display to the public. Tony, there were 15 busrelated search and rescue operations between 2009 and 2017. Last year a young woman died trying to reach it. Yeah. I mean, first of all, you can see how beautiful alaska is. Those pictures are stunning. It is a tragedy that people went to find the bus and some lost their lives. I think the pandemic the mccandless family got mementos. The safety goes up a bit. The spirit i think is contained in the book and the movie for people who want to make a pilgrimage. I think there is good all the way around. We continue to story three. Something a little more uplifting. Yes, a 9yearold girl is asking lego to make its toy collections more diverse. I noticed that only had two brown people and 15 white people. That doesnt look like my friends and the world. Right on. Her name is bella wednesday, and she made that observation while playing one day with her lego friends figures, according to her mom. So bella wrote a letter to the company asking it to create more diverse lego friends so her mom could buy them for her. We reached out to lego and have not yet heard back. Love that bella understands and sympathizes with whats going on now. We should point out that these classic lego generally have an unnatural yellow skin tone which in the past lego has said is meant to set the figures apart from a specific segment of humanity. Hoping that children would project their identities into the classic figures. Yeah. Bellas waiting for an answer from lego. Good morning everyone, it is 7 56, workers are planning an eight hour work stoppage this morning to commemorate juneteenth. There is still a lot of work to do to end systemic racism, they plan to take that message to city hall today. In San Francisco there will be a floating protest in honor of black lives matter. At the aquatic park on beach street, it also starts at 6 00 this evening. And the statue of Christopher Columbus that used to sit there on a pedestal is no more. It was loaded onto the bed of a flatbed truck. The statue was taken down because it doesnt align with the citys values or commitment to racial justice. They also removed it for this morning. 7 57. Happy friday. Welcome back to cbs this morning. I. What juneteenth tells us about americas troubled history with race and why theres a push to make it a National Holiday. Coronavirus surge. While new cases soar in oklahoma, President Trump pushes ahead with plans for a massive rally there. And fatherly advice. Dads celebrating fathers day tell us who they want to be for their kids during these troubled times. Cant wait to hear what you have to say, tony. Yeah. Yeah. But you know what they say. Payback is difficult. Ill just leave it at that. Welcome back to cbs this morning. We want to begin this hour by marking a special day in u. S. History on june 19th, 1865, 1515 years ago today, none of us were there, the last group of enslaved people in america were freed. The occasion was bittersweet because it came two and a half years after the emancipation proclamation of 1863 which some states were slow to recognize. James brown has the story of the day that became known as juneteen juneteenth. Juneteenth. For the last three years this couple has celebrated juneteenth with their four kids in their mostly white california neighborhood. What is it about juneteenth that you want people to know . Its not just a black holiday. Its a celebration of freedom. And thats what america is about. And so if you celebrate the fourth of july, you absolutely should celebrate juneteenth as well. Everyone dropped all their tools. They invite their neighbors not only to celebrate but to use it as a teaching moment. We reached out to the parents, let them know what we wanted to celebrate. All the parents were okay with that, and they sent the kids down here. A couple of the parents came as well. I got Text Messages from the parents who said thanks for teaching my kids about that cool holiday. Juneteenth stands for june 19th. The day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger finally arrived in galveston to announce the emancipation of slaves. Texas kept approximately 250,000 black people enslaved for two and a half years after the emancipation prok la ration became law. And president Abraham Lincoln was assassinated two months before granger arrived. Can you imagine . What June Juneteenth is the acknowledgement that that were slaves that lasted two more years. Sheila jackson lee has been pushing to make juneteenth a National Holiday for two decades. The potential of having this National Holiday opens a whole world of discussion for america. A whole reckoning with racism and the systemic racism that permeates the nation. Where do you lens legislatively we are . Are we poised to see this come across the finish line . I do. We are just very pleased at the number of cosponsors and members interested in being supportive in the resolution we introduced. Its delayed freedom, but it is the only recognition of the original sin of this nation. So juneteenth is an ability to tell the story of slavery. African americans havent waited for a National Recognition to celebrate juneteen juneteenth. Since 1866, parades and bbqs have been a staple of black communities from houston and san antonio to chicago and little rock. They have some really big juneteenth celebrations and i would love to go out to one of those. Theres thousands of people out there. Back in california, the mcentires feel their small celebration is one way to bridge the racial divide during this tense moment in our history. My husband and i, we took our children to a peaceful protest, and i found myself walking with a fist in the air. And there was a movement that when i looked around, it wasnt just black People Holding their hands up. Thats why i feel like there is some momentum around juneteenth. James, i have to say first, bravo. Love that family. What a great couple. Ive known about juneteenth for years and have occasionally gone to celebrations. I cant say its something i consciously celebrated every year. It feels like were in a moment with the death of george floyd and others. It seems to be giving added importance to juneteenth this year. Do you think so, too . Absolutely. And sadly, because of a horrific event like that, many people are thinking about it. But the mcentires are a perfect family example. They educate their kids and the ones in the neighborhood. Gayle, look, we understand that teaching involves explanation and demonstration. And from that comes a Practical Application and discussion. Its nice to see the young people are embracing that. Yes. I think so too. Many in Corporate America are recognizing juneteenth, including viacom. We work on holidays, so im thinking 9 01 im going to take the rest of the day off. But a lot of corporations for the first time this year are paying attention. I also think thats a good thing. Let me be clear as well too. Gayle, thank you for your honesty. Thats what im doing today as well. Again, amplifying on what teaching is about. All seven mountains of education, we ought to all embrace it. Gayle, it is shared history. It really is. The president raised a couple of eyebrows if you looked at the wall street journal where he says he made juneteenth famous. Nobody heard of it before he mentioned the controversy in tulsa where he moved his rally. That is not true, but a lot of people are learning about it for the first time. Keep in mind, as we indicated in that piece, alvin, my producer, since 1866 people of color have been celebrating it in a growing number. I would think it stands on its own. Well, now that you know, you know. You cant ignore it any longer. James brown, always good to see you. Have a good day off at 9 yours can start now. Mine starts at 9 01. Thank you. Tony . All right. Gayle, thank you very much. Former democratic president ial contender Amy Klobuchar says she does not want to be joe bidens running mate. As coronavirus cases continue to surge, theres a grim new projection from the cdc. The agency now predicts up to 145,000 u. S. Deaths by july 11th. That potentially means 26,000 more deaths in just the next few weeks. In california, one of many states seeing a big increase, governor gavin newsom is ordering people to wear masks in most public places. Now this comes as the nations top eneffect tuesday disease expert commented in a podcast for the department of health and human services. So when they see someone up in the white house which has an air of authority to it, whos talking about science, that there are some people who just dont believe that. And thats unfortunate because you know science is truth. Science is truth. Please remember that. Meanwhile, Texas Governor greg abbott has announced Public Schools will reopen this fall. Students, he says, will not have to wear a mask or get tested for covid19. And President Trumps campaign tells cbs news that supporters who are at high risk from the coronavirus should avoid large gatherings like tomorrow nights rally in tulsa, oklahoma. The state has reported its highest numbers of new infections yet for three consecutive days. And that number nearly doubled to 450 yesterday from tuesday. Republican senator James Lankford joins us now. He plans to attend that rally in tulsa, and hes already there in oklahoma city. Senator, good morning. Weve got a lot to get to. I want to jump into it. Nobody in this country is holding the kind of indoor, large gathering that the president is planning for tomorrow. Not mega churches, not sports leagues. So why put Public Safety at risk for a political rally . Yeah. There is by the way, good morning to you, as well. There is a gathering like protests, like other events, shopping, the malls that are open, obviously theres a lot of people that are there. I said yesterday on a sat yesterday on a plane that was full of people coming back in. There is a lot of activity and interaction. Weve seen numbers, as you reported, coming up in oklahoma, coming up in california, coming up in different places around the country. So this is this is a situation where people that are high risk have got to make sure theyre taking care of themselves. But the challenge that we have now is isolation is what i heard from one of the scientists, right now whats going on with isolation is like holding a helium balloon down. You can hold it down and the economy down, but as soon as you let your hands off, its going to rise. So it is a challenge for us. We cant hold the economy down forever. No. The question is not about the economy. Of course people want to get back outside. Protests are outdoor events, and theyre not organized by Something Like a Major Political party or the president of the united states. Grocery shopping has to happen, people have to take care of basic needs. A political rally is a voluntary thing. So from the outside looking in, it might appear to be putting politics over Public Safety. Can you respond to that directly . No. Its still still a participation by choice event. Lots of folks are going to watch it on tv. Theres an outdoor gathering at the venue, as well, if people want to stay outside and be able to watch. For folks who want to come inside, they can also do this. We have 80 testing sites set up around the state. Theres been encouragement this past week from the Health Department to say if youre attending the rally, come get tested early. And so you can evaluate that for yourselves. Hand sanitizers, masks are provided there. Temperature checks. So there are things that are going on that are similar to other places on this. But again, Everyone Needs to be able to Pay Attention to this. They can come to the outside event, they can come to the inside event or stay at home and watch it. Yeah. Senator, its interesting that the Trump Administration or the Trump Campaign has had people sign liability wafers. So if they waivers. If they do get sick, they wont hold the administration liable. Lets talk morally, this is your state, your constituents. Have you thought about how you will feel if somebody gets sick or, god forbid, dies. Yeah. I think everyone thinks about that all the time. The thing that weve had in our state that every other state has had is a lot of questions about liability for reopening. Restaurants are asking the same question, retail locations, office locations, everyones concerned about the liability and how this is going to work and trying to figure out does this create a moment where theres going to be additional lawsuits dealing with things where people are trying to reengage in the safest way they can. Again, anyone attending, it is a choice for them to be able to attend. This is an optional event, not a required event by any means. And people will attend on the way that they are most comfortable in the days ahead. Yeah. Lets talk about requirements for a second. You said face masks are going to be handed out, but they are not required inside the rally. The thing about face masks is theyre not really for the individual, theyre to protect others from the individual. So im curious, in your particular case, have you made up your mind . Will you be wearing a mask . Ill be wearing a mask most of the time. Ill have it off some of the time. Obviously in a gathering like that, its hard to hear. So at times i may have to take it off so people can hear me and i can hear them at times. I assume that im going to have it on a lot of the time. Interesting enough, i got home late last night and went to a restaurant with my family. I was the only person in the restaurant wearing a mask. That is typical for oklahoma you take that to be a good thing or bad thing, senator . I was saying that is a thing at this point is that no, thats a thing. Oklahomas been through seven weeks now of reopening. Its only been in the past week that weve seen a bump in our numbers. And we know thats a reengagement thats happening. Thankfully our hospitalization numbers have only slightly ticked up. Our death numbers are still staying flat. So were learning how to be able to manage this a little bit better as we go. But we are always attentive to what we can do to protect each other. All right, senator. I appreciate it. Im glad we lingered on the rally. It is an important milestone event. We havent had an event like this since the pandemic hit. We wish everyone the best of luck and, of course, the best of health, as well. Senator, thank you. Well be right back. Ahead, a constitutional law expert argues we are not ready for the november elections. Why she thinks american democracy may be in danger and what we need to do and now to fix it. First, local news coming at you next this is a kpix 5 news morning update. Good morning, it is 8 25. A new statewide order says masks must be worn when social distancing is not possible. Including any public spaces and healthcare settings. The governor issued the order amid a rise in coronavirus cases and deaths. New results are in from testing in San Franciscos mission district. It is time to bring you some of the stories that are the talk of the table this morning. This is where we each pick a story we would like to share with each other and all of you at home. And, gayle, youre up first. All right. Mine is about kedron bryant, you may not recognize his name but you know the song. He blew us away with his powerful performance with the a song written right after George Floyds death. And every day i pray my people dont want to trouble wow. He has signed a deal with warner records. I love that part. Protect me. I just want to live. God protect me. Those lyrics give me goose bumps. I just want to live is officially released today and here is his recollection. It feels really exciting. Im just overwhelmed. Im so happy. And im thankful and grateful that god allowed this to happen. Hes sitting next to his very proud mother. Shes so proud, anthony, because she wrote the song and its coming out today, juneteenth. Anthony, youll like this. I just got an email from clive davis team. Hes releasing a solo version of the late Aretha Franklins collaboration with mary j. Blige, that will be released today. I literally just got this. We have two powerful songs coming out today. I think thats really exciting. That is. Maybe we can play it next week. I love the smile on his moms face. Shes proud. I mean, that smile, she was glowing. I love that smile. Heres my story. Hes 12. Yes, yes. Two guys fulfilled a dream of having the number one movie in america. Thanks to a loophole. With movie theaters closed during the pandemic, eric and filmmaker Christian Nielsen made a lowbudget horror film called unsubscribe. They rented a theater to screen the film last week, bought every seat allowing ticket sales to go back to their own pockets. According to box office m on. Jo, unsubscribe, a half hour film they made, was the number one Box Office Movie in america on june 10th with more than 25,000 in ticket sales. If youre wondering, the movie is about youtubers who join an online video call and find themselves haunted and hunted by a mysterious internet troll. They made this movie for literally nothing and they now can claim to have the number one movie in america. I love that. It was shot entirely on zoom. We know what thats like, tony. Nice. Sounds pretty good, anthony. If they put some of that Creative Energy into an actually movie movie, they might again have the number one movie in america. All right. Ive got a very special talk of the table today. It is about my mother, gail, who is its going to be hard. Who is retiring. Go, tony. This is sweet. This is very sweet. My mother is retiring this week after 41 years as a Public School teacher. And as you can see, we are cryers in my family. So, heres a picture of her in 1980. Her first decade. And thats her pregnant with me there. Decade number one of those four decades. And here she is this week at South Hagerstown High School in western maryland. She focused on special education from her first day on the job to her last. She was fighting for resources for her students and in her early days also respect for the field. Which she always loved seeing her students succeed and also what she will miss. And i think this is hard for me because its such a big milestone. And i love her. Her students love her. And its such a good life. Tony, clearly you are thinking about some things well done. Tony, tony well done, mom. Tony, tony, before we go to the next thing, i just dont think we should sweep by that moment. Please tell us what is affecting you so much today. Most times when people retire its yea, yea, yea, celebration, but theres something about this and your mom i met your mom. Shes lovely, by the way. Shes lovely. So, my dad but theres something about this, yeah. Well, we are cryers in my family. My mom, im sure, is crying right now. Additionally, my dad wasnt around. She raised me. And in her work, she also took thousands of kids under her wing over the years. She says i have brothers out there and sisters out there i dont even know. Im sure that is true. And i think its just an example of a life well lived. And her dedication, by the way, continues. I called her last night. She was crying. I held it together. She told me she had two glasses of wine and she admitted she already filled out the application to be a substitute near her home. I dont know if retirement is going to stick. Yeah. Bravo, mom. Congratulations. Thank you. Yes. Bravo. Bravo, congrats. Congrats to your mom. Absolutely bravo to your mom. As every teachers dedication, never ends, as you have just demonstrated with your mom. Her extraordinary career as a teacher and, as we see now as a mom, should be celebrated this morning, tony. Thats really 41 years. Thats a lot of contributions to a lot of kids. Im sure shes made a huge difference in their lives. Yes, thank you. Thank you for that. Thanks for sharing that, tony. Thank you. We turn now to a new book, which warns that voting and american democracy itself may be in jeopardy. Its called what you need to know about voting and why. Author kim wehle talks about how misinformation, voter suppression, foreign influence. Shes a professor from baltimore. You actually say voting and american democracy together could be in jeopardy here. Well, weve seen many of the traditional guardrails of democracy fall. When i say that, the constitution is like a Job Description or contract. Its just a piece of paper. If its not enforced in the breach, that is, if norms or laws are broken, if people in office are doing things and theres no consequences, then the rules no longer exist. At the end of the day with really a Dysfunctional Congress right now thats so polarized, voting is on the ballot as really a check on the existence of democracy itself. People as they go to the ballot box in november, need to do so to take back their democracy of government by we the people or as myself and other scholars worry that will slip into something thats not democracy. Will approach something looking like thoaauthoritarianism. This is not entirely hyperbole in this moment. Were about to vote in a president ial election in the middle of a pandemic. Are we prepared for it, do you think . Well, you know, we have a patchwork of 50 states and then sub entities that manage voting. No, were not prepared. The states are flailing financially. There hasnt been the tax revenue thats necessary. And now states are moving, i think, in a good way towards mailin voting so people can vote safely and dont have to choose between their personal health or right to vote. That takes money. That takes coordination. You have to order the ballots in multiple languages. And people need to register now or request their mailin ballots now. Its kind of like rsvping for a party so states know how much food to tell the indicacaterer order. There will be fewer poll workers. Longer lines as we saw in georgia. Problems in wisconsin. I think we have to expect that not every vote is going to be timely counted. Weve had you mentioned the long lines. We had record turnout in georgia. I think in iowa as well. But at the same time, registration appears to be down in some places. What do you see going on there . Well, registration is down. It was up in january and february over 2016. But when covid hit in march, it plummeted because under federal law you register at the dmv. And the dmv is closed. Theyre obviously election sites where you can register officially. Social Services Agencies and a huge get out the vote is not happening. As we saw in wisconsin, as i indicated, people really do want to vote. But when they sign up late, later, closer to the election date, there was a tsunami of applications and just not the resources to catch up. So, again, earlier is better. And as i have written recently in a piece, apathy and cynicism around voting is one of the biggest objections to voting. I encourage people to grab a friend or two who is not used to voting and get them out. Theres nothing more important in this moment. Whatever your issue is that you care about, immigration reform, climate change, it all hinges on a functioning democracy. All right. The book is what you need to know about voting and why. Kim this sunday, of course, is fathers day. A day when all the dads out there can expect to be celebrated, honored, and appreciated. But you got to work for it. Not a guarantee. I had a candid conversation with some dads from all over the country about the ways that fatherhood has changed their lives and what it means to be a good dad, especially a good dad right now. We spoke about protecting, shaping, and caring for kids during a time with so much hurt, pain, and upheaval. Particularly over racial injustice. Nice to meet you nice to meet you. How old are you, tess . 2. 2. Yay. Yay. These are our 3yearold twins, alexandra and zachary. When did you turn 3 . On my birthday. Believe it or not, this is fathers day number ten for me. I have an almost 11yearold son, an 8yearold daughter, and then the baby. Isnt that fun . Welcome to our world. Okay, lets do one more finger. Amazing. When you have that privilege of becoming a father, you have a higher sense of purpose. Youve now entered that selfless zone where there are individuals that is far more important than you are. How did you define being a good father . Being present. More meaningful for me, i wasnt raised by my dad. In fact, ive only met him three times. What it meant to be a dad was simply to be present. Looking at todays world, i would say just time, time is the most important thing. Thats how i would drive a great father. A father to three sons, whats important to me is not for them to emulate me or essentially grow up to be like me but to be better than me. You know, somebody that gives their kids the confidence to tackle it the world with a full head of steam. Part of that means equipping your kids with tools that overcome adversity. I still hang on to faith that well be able to fix the things that are wrong in our world. And fatherhood did that for me. [ speaking Foreign Language ] its opened my eyes. I am educating my daughter to be a citizen of the world and to look at things for what they bring to the table and not based on appearances. Being a dad of color comes with a level of pride that i dont think that anybody will understand unless they are a dad of color. Im very mindful that i have a black daughter. And while that is the best blessing in the world, it can also be something that im very scared of. Theres so much that i want to tell her about the reality of things. I want her to know how the world works for people like her, kids that dont look like her. Trying to figure out the right words to say. Its not having the right words to say. When he grows up, i want him to be able to walk into a room and know that hes supposed to be there. And why is he supposed to be there . Because his dad helped prepare him to be there. As fathers have an opportunity to make the change from this generation to the next, how do you make that change as a dad . Hes going to experience every single thing that i went through. My only job is to make sure i uproot anything in the way that i can move. Im hopeful that my daughters are going to be able to you know, they always have choices no matter what anyone says to them. And that they never stop loving themselves. To help them understand, you know, who they are and to have pride in who they are, and to wear and understand what it is to be, you know, young black boys, as a badge of honor. And to wear that badge unapologetically. During this upcoming fathers day, im going to make a personal challenge to myself to figure out how can we make this world a better place for the next 365. Its a day that i really feel that we actually do get credit that we deserve. All the dads out there, i just want to say, live slow. Take the long way to school or to day care. Let them sit in your lap for an extra 15, 20 minutes even though you know its past his bedtime. Theres no book to tell you how to be a father. Everything is on the fly. And you got to go with the flow. Fatherhood is like driving on the road at night, you can only see as far as the headlights, but you make it there safely most of the time. Love you. Great picture. Most of the time is the key phrase there. First of all, bravo to natasha sing, chris gagilin and gloria who put that together. Wonderful. I know you like to rag on my nerdy footwear, but my fathers days arrived and it is more nerdy dad footwear. Yeah. I was going to say, this is 2020. You dont need to wear birkenstocks and socks. But okay, whatever you guys like at your house. Listen, lovely tribute to your mother. And now a beautiful tribute to you and anthony on this fathers day weekend. Congrats. Beautifully done. All right. Thank you, gayle. Thank you. Stay with us, well be right back. There were great thoughts in the fathers day story. I love the father who said his job is uprooting every tree in his childs way. I love that idea, gayle. Great. I did, too. And i want to clarify, tony, its okay with the birk these are real people, not actors, whove got their eczema under control. With less eczema you can show more skin. So roll up those sleeves.
