Public universities and Government Agencies stopped considering race in their hiring and admissions decisions. Today the assembly approved a proposal to repeal that ban. The bills author says recent police traiks tragedies are showing that race and gender still matter. The bill could be ratified later on this month and be up for a vote in november. Happening now, calls to disband Oakland Unified SchoolDistricts Police force. Kpix 5 is live in oakland with the plan and how backers say they would keep students safe. Reporter well, ken, backers say that there is a plan in place that they want to implement to keep students safe even without a Police Department. They say they are the only School District in Alameda County that has that Police Department and those millions could be better served serving the students. The idea of defunding the police is not a new one for the black organizing project. The idea was first introduced nine years ago with the proposal to reallocate 2. 3 million from the Oakland Unified School police force to other uses in the district. And listening to the people in our community who said we dont want police in schools. We want teachers. We want librarians. We want hope. We want nurses. We want arts programs. We want ethnic studies. Reporter the proposal was brought to the school board in march and rejected but is back again. Named the george floyd resolution, it is cosponsored by rose i cant be tor res. We have to get behind these students and we have to fund education, not police. We have to Fund Mental Health counselors, not police. Reporter the groups goal is to have the Districts Department gone by december 31st white still having a safety plan in place. Students say they need help at school, just not from officers. And if the School District is spend too much money oh police heil schools are being closed and students dont have what they need, instead they could be using the much for thicks that thicks things that students actually need. Reporter a vote will happen on the 24th. Also happening right now, there is a protest headed to mayors house asking her to defund the citys Police Department, which is different from the School Districts. Underwood was killed while he was guarding the Federal Building in oakland during protests two weeks ago. His killer has not been caught. George floyds brother also spoke out. My family, they just cry, cry every day, and just ask why, why. He pleaded for his life. Where is the outrage for a fallen officer that also happens to be africanamerican . Lawmakers from both sides vow to work towards solutions, but Nothing Specific was announced. Some people at the hearing bashed calls from protest groups to defund Police Departments. If you believe that we should defund the police, will you please raise your hand . It is a ridiculous solution to proclaim that defunding Police Departments is a solution to Police Brutality and discrimination because it is not a solution. It gets us nowhere as a nation and removes a safety net of protection that every citizen deserves from our communitys elected officials. Tonight the Police Departments across Sonoma County are planning some big changes in response to recent protests. They include baking controversial tactics like choke holds. The cities say they will do more through background checks and on officers watching for any prior misconduct. Theyre also encouraging the public to speak out. Were listening to you. We support you. What was supposed to be a day filled with presents, balloons and cake ended in tragedy. A group of shooters opened fire at a Childs Birthday Party in north vallejo. The violence unfolded last night. The family members say that they were wrapping up a Birthday Celebration for their niece and grandson along cynthia lane when a group of shooters ran into the yard and started targeting men, women and children. The shooting left two women dead, three people wounded, including a 10yearold boy. Tonight family members are struggling to understand why. Thank you, paul. A statewide man hunt is underway to find the shooter who ambushed a sheriff deputy and killed another man in San Luis Obispo man fired shots at A Paso Robles gas station. Hours later another man was found shot dead near the citys amtrak station. Both shootings appear to be related. The two deputies were searching the area in which the shooter was last seen. They were out of their vehicle and came under fire. This was abambush that he planned it, he intended for the officers to come out of the Police Department and to assault them. Authorities just released these pictures of the suspects. They believe that he has left the paso robles area but it is up clear where he may have gone.
