Reporter the details on president Donald Trumps plan to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States are being ironed out. Reporter new york mayor bill de blasio says the first public event after the virus has passed will be a ticker tape parade for Health Care Workers and First Responders. Anthony, thats one thing they cannot cancel, earth day. 50 years and counting. And the skies look very clear this morning. Yeah. Despite everything thats going on. Thats still a pretty good looking piece of earth, gayle. I know. I think so, too. Im very happy that we are here and we are staying home because of the coronavirus, doing what we can to stop the spread. Hope are you doing that, too, if you can. But if youre out on the front lines, we cannot thank you enough. There are not enough words to say thank you. Well try with that. We begin with a stark new warning about the future, severity of the coronavirus crisis. In a Washington Post interview, cdc director dr. Robert redfield says this, we could see a second wave of the virus next winter, and he says it could be even more difficult than what is happening right now. Yikes. Because it would hit at the same time as the flu season. Thats just one of many unknowns facing governors as they decide when and how to reopen their states. Mark strassmann is in hardhit atlanta where the mayor says she wasnt even consulted by georgias governor before he decided to partially reopen in a couple of days from now. Mark, how are businesses handling all this . Reporter were about to find out, anthony. And good morning. Georgia ranks in the top 15 of mostinfected states. Nonetheless, this state is getting ready for what you might call a soft open. Certain businesses can unlock their doors for customers if they follow social distancing and sanitation guidelines. As some of the states around the country began to relax social distancing restrictions, the reality of what normal will look like is starting to sink in. Its scary. From all aspects. Reporter lindsey nash owns a georgia hair salon and is getting back to work. Governor brian kemp announced his plan to begin reopening the state this friday. Shutting down for much longer wouldnt be an option. We dont know how long the pandemic will go on. Reporter but some residents and political leaders disagree with governor kemp, including the mayor of albany, georgia. The city has endured one of the highest per capita infection rates in the country. I pray that the number of georgians who are infected and die will not increase significantly in the coming weeks as a result of the lifting of these restrictions. Reporter dr. Deborah birx, the White House Coronavirus response coordinator, says its important for governors and mayors to follow the reopening guidelines. It will have to be on a communitybycommunity opening. I believe people in atlanta would understand that if their cases are not going down that they need to continue to do everything that we said, social distancing. Reporter birx is worried about asymptomatic spread, a concern bolstered by new antibody research. It suggests many more americans may have been infected by covid than first thought. Were not opening up all businesses as usual by any means. Reporter many businesses in South Carolina have already been given the green light in a state where only about 42,000 people have been tested for the virus. Some North Carolina public beaches are now open. Some retail, too, Like Department stores. In texas, Dallas County officials voted to extend their stayathome order through the middle of next month. Texans really want to get back to work. Kind of part of the texas dna. Reporter but Governor Greg Abbott says his fourrthcoming pn for reopening will overall any local policy. To me, im living a movie. Reporter texan Susan Morrison lives in dallas. She lost her 39yearold stepbrother and her 83yearold father to covid19 on consecutive days. To not be able to see your Family Member die or to be there, hold their hands, and to just hear, oh, hes gone now, is not how i imagined saying goodbye to my father. Reporter the white house has set certain standards for states to reopen, and one of them is a twoweek downward trend of new covid cases. Gayle, by that standard, georgia fails. Until now, the first known victim was reported to have died in Washington State on february 29th, but new testing reveals that someone actually died of the virus in california three weeks earlier on february 6th. Today the reported National Death toll is more than 45,000 people. Yeah. The actual toll may be higher because many people are never able to get tested because of shortages of kits. Health care workers and First Responders will soon receive the first fdaauthorized athome test. We have dr. Stephen hahn now to tell us more. Good morning. Americans are sitting at home now and theyre wondering two things when can i get back to work, and can i do it safely. This athome test, tell us about it. Where does it fit into the bigger puzzle of testing which seems so important to doing those two things return to normalcy, returning to the economy, working as usual. Good morning. Thank you for having me. So this new test is an athome collection test for diagnostic. That is a test that would diagnose the presence of the covid19 virus. This is a test where its going to focus lab corps, the company thats developed this, is going to focus first on frontline Health Care Workers and First Responders. Those with symptoms can go on line and fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be reviewed by a health care professional, a licensed physician, and if appropriate and consistent with the cdc guidelines, a package will be sent overnight with a swab and a tube. Its very easy and safe to perform. Our data show that its as accurate as having it performed in the Doctors Office or in a clinic. They can perform the test, put it in the tube of say lean, and overnight it to the lab and get the results thereafter from lab corp. It sounds like good news. Lets talk about how it fits into the bigger picture. I was looking at the testing data. The u. S. Has been stuck at below 200,000 tests per day. That is at least half as many we need to double that pace, maybe even triple it to reopen safely according to some experts and their estimates. What are we doing to close that gap . Is the athome test part of it . The athome test is certainly part of it. And fda has issued 59 emergency use authorizations for tests, four of which are the antibody tests. The rest are the diagnostic tests. We have over 300 developers who are working with us to continue to expand that capacity. The other thing that its really important to know and this has been mentioned several times, and weve had calls with the governors about it, there is unlocked capacity in the country. Were working very closely with the governors and the state Public Health officials to make sure that the adequate supplies and the information about where those tests are available are made known to folks so that they can actually unlock that capacity. We believe that based upon that information that we could double the number of tests that are done in a very short period of time. Can you tell us what a very short period of time is . Right now every day counts. People want to get back to work. If we need to double the number of tests were doing, how soon can we do that . Can you give us a date . Sure. I mean, youve seen dr. Birx and dr. Fauci talk about this on the podium. That could be done this week if the appropriate identification occurs at the state level and then the supplies are there for them. And so this is every day working with the states, unlocking that capacity, getting the supplies where theyre needed, and actually informing the state Public Health officials about what alternative supplies are available. And weve issued a number of flexible policies to allow different swabs and different agents to be available. We are disseminating that information very quickly to the states. Doctor, lets talk about something that dr. Redfield at the cdc said yesterday to the Washington Post, that we could see a second wave of the coronavirus next winter. It could make this wave pale by comparison. Do you agree with his assessment . Are you worried about that second wave . I think that its certainly a possibility, and the whole task force set of doctors is concerned about the second wave. Dr. Redfields concern is there also might be flu at the same time. But thats why we have built into the plan the surveillance mechanisms to look for the respiratory illnesses and than do the appropriate tecfting at that time. Thats going to be a critical part of the reopening plan to allow us to move forward. And dr. Hahn, a simple yes or no because i have to go the timetable for a vaccine which would be a game changer, last we checked with you, it would be a year off, march of 2021. Is that still the case . Still the case that the estimate is march. Were trying to accelerate the efforts and will try for sooner, sir. Doctor hahn, a lot of people counting on you. But many people are still in the dark about what to do. Our National Correspondent Jericka Duncan spoke to a detroit family now mourning a man they say was turned away from getting tested three times. Begging for his life, but flow one would help him at all. They just kept sending him sending him away. Reporter keith gambrel says he was concerned his phelps father, 5 his stepfather, 56yearold gary fowler, had coronavirus. Gambrell took him to the e. R. Three times and each time fowler was not admitted and not tested despite having many of the symptoms. I honestly think its because my father was black they didnt take the symptoms serious enough to give him a test. Reporter the day before fowler died, his dad died of covid19. Shouldnt after fowlers soon after fowlers wife had symptoms of her own, landing her in the hospital. They put her on the ventilator. Im thinking, man, this is it. Im about to lose my mom. Reporter gambrell was concerned other Family Members could be next. He called his cousin, state representative karen whitsett. Whitsett, who visited the white house last week to speak about surviving coronavirus, made sure her family was tested. If not for your title as state lawmaker, do you think your family would have been able to get tested . Absolutely not. And thats that sickens me to have to use that title to be able to have to get my family tested. Come to find out, i tested positive for it. My brother, troy, tested positive for it. My brother, ross, tested positive for it. Reporter on monday, michigans governor created a state tfrs to investigate Racial Disparities in the pandemic. Lieutenant governor garland gilchrest is the chair. One of the things that we are addressing with there task force is the fact that there may indeed be medical bias present when it comes to testing, as in who will even get a test, as well as how treatment is administered. Reporter gambrell is focused on caring for his mother, cheryl. She had been sent home from the hospital but was readmitted last night on what would have been her 25th wedding anniversary. Having been through this, what do you say to people who are losing loved ones back to back . Just pray. You just got to continue to fight for them and live the life that they would live and be their voice. Someone has to speak for the people that cant get medical attention the proper way, and i feel like thats my duty now. Reporter and i just spoke to gambrell this morning. He says his mother is still in the hospital as we speak. The governor there in michigan says that the state has the capacity to test 11,000 people each day, but she says right now they dont have enough reagents and swabs, so theyre testing at half that amount. Such an important part of the story. Thank you very much. Moving to washington, congress is set to extend a federal aid program for struggling businesses after criticism that too much of the money has gone to large corporations. Last night, President Trump called on Harvard University to return more than 8 million in emergency aid. Harvard, which had a 41 billion endowment before the recent stock market downturn, says 100 of that grant money will go to support students. Reporter the president just tweeted this morning that he will sign an order today to suspend the issuing of green cards for at least 60 days in order to cut that competition for american jobs as the economy rebounds. Although some people like Seasonal Agriculture workers will be exempt. Critics say this is merely a political stunt. President trump is set to sign executive action that will temporarily suspend applications for permanent residency, claiming the move will help americans looking for work. By pausing immigration, well help put employed Americans First in line for jobs as america reopens. Reporter and democrats have accused mr. Trump of having an ulterior motive fulfilling a Campaign Promise to scale back on legal immigration. No, im not doing that at all. Reporter meanwhile, there was some good news for the more than 22 million unemployed americans. Congressional leaders finally came to an agreement on adding additional funds to the Paycheck Protection Program or ppp. There are always a lot of claims about who won and who lost. I think the American People are the ones who won. Reporter the nearly 500 billion deal includes 310 billion for Small Business loans, 60 billion of which will be set aside for Smaller Banks and lenders. When the first round of aid was distributed, large entities received 10 million loans. Shake shack returned its money, and the administration wants others like Harvard University to do the same. Harvards going to pay back the money. And they shouldnt be taking it. Reporter harvard pushed back late last night saying the money they received came from a different fund meant to help struggling students. The deal also includes 75 billion for hospitals and 25 billion for virus testing. Its unclear exactly what a National Testing program will look like, but the house is expected to pass the bill tomorrow. And the president has already indicated he will sign it. A New Hampshire chef and Restaurant Owner ran a virtual Boston Marathon on his treadmill all to help his staff. Matt louis owns four restaurants. He than scheduled to run highway had been scheduled to run the Boston Marathon before it was postponed due to the coronavirus. He started a gofundme page and ran the race from home. All of it. 26 miles. The best part, he raised 20,000 for his employees who had been affected by the pandemic. And the grateful employees at one point were so happy about what he was doing, they came to cheer him on. I would need a lot of cheering personally to do 26 miles on any day, let alone on a treadmill. God. Ba, ba, ba, ba. Thats a long way. But a sweet story. One of the countrys largest coronavirus outbreaks is inside an ohio prison, almost 2,000 inmates at the Marion Correctional Institution have tested positive. The virus has become a serious problem in prisons and jails nationwide. Omar villafranca spoke to Family Members of inmates who worried about their loved ones. This is the dormitory. Super crowded. Were super crowded. Reporter this video appears to show alabama inmates describing how easily the coronavirus could spread in the states jail system. We need help. Death is imminent for us. Reporter one shot appears to show close sleeping quarters. I am almost 100 certain that hes not going to make it home because of his health. Reporter kylie herring is terrified for her 27yearold fiance dylan james hendricks. Hendricks is in an alabama Work Release Program serving time for stolen property and drugrelated charges. Hes up for parole in june. Herring worries if hendricks, who has severe asthma, gets covid19, it will kill him. She wants him released early. Weve been planning a wedding for june, for when he was paroled. I dont have to exchange my Wedding Dress for a coffin. Thats what im certain is going to happen. Legally speaking, is there a civil rights issue . This is absolutely a civil rights issue. Reporter civil rights attorney lee merritt says with the virus spreading in jails, some nonviolent offenders should be released. There is going to be a time of reckoning when this disease begins to spread among people who have failed to social distance. That is going to be the prison system. Reporter Rebecca Fischer is an epidemiologist at texas a m. She explains why social distancing in jail or prison is nearly impossible. There are a lot of opportunities for contact, direct contact with sick individuals and indirect contact through objects and surfaces. Reporter the virus has exploded at the Cook County Jail in chicago. If there was any symptoms being shown by an individual we would take that individual out of the unit. Reporter cook county silver tom dart oversees the jail where six inmates have died and nearly 400 have tested positive despite stepped up cleaning efforts. Closing their doors, dart says, is not an option. I certainly cant call the Chicago Police department and say, listen, those people you picked up for murder last night, the brutal murders, yeah, just keep them locked up in your office. Handcuff them to a desk. You cant do that. Reporter are you worried as a mother . Im terrified something happened to my son. Reporter maria valdez begged for the early lease of her son locked up in the Cook County Jail for a nonviolent offense. He spoke to us over the phone while in jail about the conditions. Somebodys coughing, we told them to cover their mouth, face, you know, like, and wash their hands if theyre coughing. And thats basically all we can do. Reporter sanchez has an upcoming trial. While he waits for the date, his attorney was able to get him released from jail with an ankle monitor and back home where hes safe. At last check, 34 people tested positive in the Dallas County jail. And that includes at least 12 jail workers, essential employees, people who are coming to work every day and going home to their families. There was a lawsuit filed against the Dallas County sheriff asking for the release of certain vulnerable inmates. Anthony . Omar, thank you. Robert redfield says this, we could see a second wave of the virus next winter. Do you agree with his assessment . Are you worried about that second wave . Its certainly a possibility. And the whole task force set of doctors is concerned about the second wave. And dr. Redfields concern is that there also might be flu at the same time. Just one of many unknowns facing governors as they decide when and how to reopen their states. Georgia ranks in the top 15 of most infected states. Nonetheless, this state is getting ready for a soft opening. Reporter the president will sign an order to suspend the issuing of green cards for at least 60 days in order to cut that competition for american jobs. Well begin with this looks so good the head of did look very good. The picture on the coronavirus is where were going to begin this hour. The cdc, the head of the cdc says a second coronavirus wave could be even worse than the current outbreak. In a Washington Post interview, dr. Robert redfield says it just may it may happen just as the flu season starts, potentially overwhelming hospitals. He said stepped up testing and Contact Tracing are needed. The white house says it will be ready. I believe that well have Early Warning signals both there our surveillance that weve been talking about in these on the vulnerable populations, were going to continue that surveillance from now all the way through the fall. Theres a Big Development on the testing front. The fda has authorized the first athome test kit for the coronavirus. It will initially be used by Health Care Workers and First Responders, allowing them to collect their own samples. We spoke with fda commissioner, thats dr. Stephen hahn, earlier on cbs this morning. Its very easy and safe to perform. Our data show that its as accurate as having it performed in the Doctors Office or in a clinic. They can perform the test, put it in the tube of say lean, and overnight it back to the lab. That test as described by dr. Hahn sounds promising, but there are a lot of unanswered questions, especially if we could be looking at a second wave of the coronavirus this winter. Our dr. David agus joins us now. David, good morning. Regarding that second wave, let me start there. Do you agree it could be worse, and if so, how do we prepare for it . Reporter theres no question were worried about a second wave. A second wave is when theres going to be potentially influenza coming back. We got lucky, believe it or not, at the end of this virus in that the influenza outbreak in our condition was coming down dramatically. When we talk about a second wave, if it and covid19 and influenza happen at the tame time, its worrisome. The way we prepare, we vaccinate the country for influenza. We aggressively treat when if youre exposed, we treat your wife with the drug so she doesnt get influenza. We can prevent a lot of hospitalizations if we do that and we mobilize. At the same time, when covid19 happens in the fall, my hope and prayer, we have drugs that work to treat it, so we can do the same there. All right. David, lets go back to the athome test the fda has been talking about. Do you have any concerns about this test . And what impact do you think it will have on the testing problem we have . Reporter well, i think its going to be a quality test is the good thing. The problem is, if youre a First Responder and you order a test, a day later it arrives, you do the test, you ship it back, a day later it gets the test gets to the company, and two days later you get results, you dont want to delay of four days minimum if youre a First Responder or somebody who thinks they have the disease. Its different today when were all at home anyway and we can absorb that delay. But when were out in the real world, we want to know right away so we can go back without worrying of infecting somebody, or we can quarantine ourselves. So the delay does worry me in the new test. How far away do you think we are from getting the testing that we really need . Reporter thats the milliondollar question. I think were going to be able to increase the number of tests, of who has the disease over the next several weeks. Were starting to see it now. States are coming through, labs are coming through. Were not where we need to be. Were still missing many of the swabs in parts of the country, some of the reagents. Were going to get there in the number of tests. The big question is will we have a test for immunity . That is who is immune to the virus . Theres been a lot of talk about it, but there still is not a test for immunities available in the United States today. David, some states like georgia are moving toward reopening slowly. Even though the infection rate has not declined substantially there yet. Whats the medical risk in doing that if any . This is a strange virus in that it infects large numbers of people. The los angeles data that came out monday showed it infected 50 times more people than we had known from positive tests. There are a large number of people with it, and a very small number get very sick. If the virus continue to spread in georgia because they open up too soon, asymptomatic people who feel fine can spread it, and we can get people who are sick and back in hospitals. We dont want to be back where we started. Singapore opened the gates early after they had a great initial response, and they had a significant next wave where patients got sick again. So im worried in any state that doesnt have it under control and really has success of declines over two weeks for them to open their gates. One last thing, david. Reports now that testing in california has shown that the first actual death happened earlier than we thought. We thought it was in washington at the end of february. It appears it was in california at the beginning of the month. What does that say to us about what weve been through here . Weep wo we know it started minimum in china. Theres a lot of commerce between china and Silicon Valley. Not shocking that someone from china could have flown to Silicon Valley and spread it. They went and did autopsies in people who died in the beginning of february. They found that they had no travel to china or known contacts, but they had the virus. And so certainly the story is being told as we speak. This virus is teaching all of us in the medical and Science Community humility. We know so little here, and were learning every day. My hope is we learn enough so we can make a dramatic impact against this virus, and we can go back to living safely out of doors. All right. Dr. David agus, thank you. Appreciate it. These are the royal Botanical Gardens at kew in west london, where theyve been studying the health of the planet for about 250 years. Never has their work seemed more vital than now. Its not a bad back yard that youve got here. Its exceptionally beautiful. But its tragic to see these beautiful gardens, 330 acres here at kew, a world heritag site, to see them empty. Reporter normally there would be 10,000 or 12,000 people strolling about kew gardens on a glorious spring day like this. In the postvirus world, theres only us. Richard deverell is the director of kew gardens and lives on the property. Not a bad perk. Do you see relationship between whats going on now and the covid19 crisis that the world is experiencing and the kind of things that kew has been trying to do for centuries . I think humanity faces some fundamental challenges unless we start to treat the Natural World better. When your community sees pictures of others, they think, oh, thats the virus for them. I lived that with hiv. I could see everyone saying thats only the virus for that community. You know, viruses infect people indiscriminately of their race, indiscriminately of their age or sex. And i think really we ned to get the message out to every community, particularly our urban communities. We know our urban communities are disproportionately impacted by this virus because of the way its so contagious. Disproportionate is the word. Part of the problem is early on there was a terrible rumor that black americans could not get it. So in the beginning, many black people did not take it seriously. And you see interviews with people in the documentary who are Still Holding on to that. Im hoping by the time this hour is over they will see it very differently. Yeah. And its become as weve been reporting for the last week or so, its become really severe. At one point in louisiana, 70 of the deaths were africanamericans. Disproportionately impacted. Exactly. Exactly. And the personal stories as we all know always make the difference. There are some very powerful personal stories in this documentary tonight. I saw the rough cut last night. And since were coming to you from our homes, well share a story we each have here at home that we want to get out to the world and with each other. So gayle, were going to start with you. What have you got for us . I am so excited about this. Its about football. The football people are talking about this. Its the football reunion that is big, big buzz today. Tight end Rob Gronkowski is coming out of retirement to play again with who former patriots teammate tom brady. Now gronk has agreed to play for the tampa bay buccaneers. Brady, as you know, signed with the bucs last month. Im so fascinated by this, guys. I want to know did tom ask did tom ask gronk, did sgronk ask tom. How did gronk ask tom . How did this come about . Gronk was dabbling in wrestling for a bit. When he retired in 2018, he said it was messing with his physical and mental health. Kudos to the patriots because they could have been petty bettys about this. He had one year left on his contract, and theyre going to let him out so he can go and play. Kudos to them for that. Tony, i dont know if you know the song by peaches and herb called reunited and it feels so good thats what theyre singing. Anthony, i know you know it. Do you know peaches and herb reunited . Tony . I do know it. I will not attempt to sing it. If youre a buccaneer season ticket holder, thats got more valuable. Cool indeed. I have news out of new york city here. We know broadway theaters have gone dark because of the coronavirus. Well, i got some bad news on this front. Now theres an influential comedy group here, really iconic group, thats closing its doors for good. Not a temporary closure. The Upright Citizens Brigade is an improv theater, a training center, and its shutting down its new york city locations under Financial Stress here because of the virus. Amy poehler is one of its founders. It really launched some of the funniest people in america. Comedians like aziz ansari, kate mckinnon, donald glover. So many people have come through there. And its a sad milestone. I want to be clear, the founder say theyre taking this step in hopes of saving something of the organization. So theyre going to shut the physical locations, but shift what resources they have to a pared down format so they can keep working in new people and launching people into america. I mean, its one of those things where theres an old joke, anthony, that laughter is the best medicine other than medicine itself. Im glad were working on the medicine part of everything now. But in this crisis, any time we need funny people. Yeah. Yeah. You hate to see casualties like this. My son nick took an improv class there a couple of summers ago and loved it. Its really sad to see them close down here in new york. As you said, theyre still hope in l. A. At least. We hope they can hold on. Heres my story. Weve been talking a lot about what medical workers are going through. Well, an e. R. Doctor in corpus chris christi, texas, found extreme housing as he selfquarantines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Take a look. My wife informed me that im not coming home. Im going to be staying in quarantine. So i came up with the tree house quarantine. I wanted to show you a little bit. Welcome to my crib. Dr. Jason barnes moved into the tree house in his back yard about three weeks ago. It allows him to be near his family. Hes added air conditioning and a modest bathroom. The bunk bed is made of cathedralar wood. Despite the air conditioning, she hhe showed off the mosquito zapper. The plumbing, not much. As treehouses igo, its very nice, but its still a tree house. He can stand on the balcony and watch his kids play. His wife said, youre not coming home until this is over. Hes up there for a while. I still think thats a cool place. Go, doctor. So youre at home, youre looking for something to read got a suggestion for you today. Its a chilling new novel, describes a flulike pandemic similar to the coronavirus outbreak. The book is the end of october, about a virus that starts in asia, indonesia in this case, and very quickly spreads across the world. Pulitzer prizewinning author Lawrence Wright start e ed writ this back at the end of 2017 and finished it last summer. Whoa. Lawrence wright, good morning to you. I cant wait to meet you in person because let me say this about your book it is terrifying, and it is a page turner. And i want the audience to get an idea about what you have to show the similarities. As we said, the deadly virus starts in indonesia it goes global. There are supplies shortages, check. There are not enough testing, check. There are stayathome orders, check. The Vice President is charged is in charge of the response, check, check. So this is a question i know your friends are calling you a prophet. Bl what did you see, what do you know, Lawrence Wright . Well, i was interested as a young reporter, i did some stories out of the centers for Disease Control in atlanta. And thats when i first got enchanted by the ingenuity and courage of people who work in Public Health. And so i you know, years later, ridley scott asked me to write a screenplay about something that causes civilization to collapse. He never made the movie. But it it brought me back to the idea that a pandemic such as the 1918 flu, returned in our society. How would we behave. Would they be better prepared than our ancestors were . That was the question that i was putting to the experts i talked to. Well, this is the thing because, larry, youre not a doctor, youre not a scientist, because when i was reading, i thought he must have some kind of medical background. What you are is a very, very good, stellar reporter. Can you talk about your research . I read at one point you even talked to your dentist. Yeah. Well, gayle, i like to work from facts. You know, from real life. And its more interesting to me to find out what really happened or what would happen. So in the case of my dentist, i had a dental operation in the novel, and i interviewed him about how it would be done. You know, you always discover things by talking to people who really know the answers. And so i feel more comfortable writing knowing that thats how it would really go down. Yeah. I mean, thats how it really went down. It was so eerie, i have to say, reading the book because so much of what you wrote in the book is happening now. So when you first heard about covid19, number one, when did you hear about it . And what did you think when you first heard it . It was new years eve when the chinese made the declaration that there was this new virus. Oftentimes new viruses especially flu viruses arise in asia, especially in china. And it was already, you know, at a dangerous level in china. We didnt know how dangerous at that point. But i was alert to that. And by, oh, toward the end of january, i was already stocking up on groceries and ordering masks and gloves because i just thought the viruses dont pay any attention to borders. And this ones going to fly across our border as sure as anything. And it was wasnt long before it did get here. Lets talk about dr. Henry parsons. People havent read the book. What do you want the audience to know about him . Because of course im thinking anthony fauci. But thats not the case briefly tell us about him. Well, actually, gayle, henry parsons, i borrowed the name from a littleknown epidemiologist in the 19th century who is the man who demonstrated that influenza was caused by contagion and not by environmental gases, my aand he the epidemiologist. I tip my hat to him. Hes a man whos been touched by disease himself. He represents the world that i set this novel in, the world of medical science and these intellectual adventurers who, the epidemiologists who charge into places where novel diseases arise. They have no idea what theyre dealing with. Their mission is to find out and to stop the spread. And thats the world that revenue he comes from that henry comes from. Yeah. The difference in the book is humanity is showing itself here in what were going through. Theres a lack a lot of humanity in the end of october. I wont give it away, but bravo, bravo, very well done. Lay your head on me lay your head with performers from 29 countries lay your head on me feels almost like a global group hug. So this song almost sounds like it was written for this moment in time. But it wasnt actually. Yeah. Thats a coincidence. Wed written it, we wrote it last year. Dont be afraid the first collaboration between major lazer, the dance music trio led by dip list o, and Marcus Mumford of the folk rock band mumford and sons. They had a very different video planned but suddenly that changed. What happened was, of course, the quarantine. All the performances were shot at home over the last month. Marcus, when did you actually shoot your part of this . Yeah, a couple weeks ago in lockdown. My wife shot the whole thing. She was camera operator. Reporter mumfords wife is the actress carrie mullegin. Did you get it in the first take . I didnt. We came across all the same issues that everyone tries to do zoom calls has, barking dogs and crying children. We had a few cracks at it, but it was good fun actually. It looked like you were sitting on your kitchen table. I was at one point, yeah. My kids came in like, what are you doing . Thats against the rules. You know thats against the rules. The other performers were recruited from around the world. The more than 200 artists included drummers Dorothea Taylor in michigan and camellia akhamie kies in jacksonville, florida. A navy vet who played with her son, julian. And students from the dre Dreamcatchers Academy in nigeria. These were kids we knew that dance, they sing, its a preschool for kids who want to like empower themselves and learn about music. Theres a whole spirit to the whole video which was just try it and see what happens. I think that was the spirit that really got through to everyone that was cast, too. Just try it. Like if you make a fool of yourself, thats fine. How are you both doing in quarantine . Im trying to look at the positive. Im taking advantage of every moment i have. Im concentrating on things i wouldnt do otherwise. Im trying to learn how to play guitar better, trying to learn whatever i can, paint. Have you found any new hobbies while youre at home . Ive been working, man. Im in the studio here. Its okay its all right someday we will be fine at the time i thought it was a smart idea to build a studio at home. Now i sort of regret it. To raise money for charities, mumford has released his version of roger and hammersteins youll never walk alone. Youll never walk alone and diplo has been deejaying on instagram and other social media. Im still trying to pretend that i have a job so im deejaying every thursday, friday, saturday. I work with dancers a lot. This is one time where theres nowhere for that to go. People cant go to bars, they cant dance, they cant go to festivals. Just to keep that part alive for young people, to have some fun. What do you want folks to take away from this video that youre putting out . I think the message in the song that marcus wrote, if got better every time. He changed it ten different times. Little parts of the verse. The message was really clear. Its about showing someone some support when you can. I feel like its a celebration of human spirit. Someday we will be fine just people at home, like people playing instruments, dancing, playing with neighbors, and spreading this message that we love in the song that weve done together. Yeah, just i think its a celebration of people at home. I love it. Lay your head on me lay your head on me they actually wrote the song on earth day last year which is why they wanted to release it on earth day this year. But of course, so much changed in the last month. They threw out the old idea for the old video and made a new one. But as you can see, its really lovely. Gayle . Its really lovely. It is still out there and has been out there for quite some time. The latest information is now that the two right lanes of south 680 heading into the are completely shut down until further notice. They will keep it closed for cleanup. Have to empty all the fuel off of the tanker truck to get that vehicle completely off the freeway its out. Also reports of a 10 to 25 gallon diesel fuels will spill in the area. Traffic is slow moving south. The off ramp for coop and also completely blocked. Definitely give yourself a few extra minutes.
