President trump has issued federal disaster declarations for all 50 states and thats a first in u. S. History. But seven states still do not have stayathome orders. In the meantime, dr. Someone so healthy, someone so full of life, and then i got a call on friday saying that his heart stopped, and my heart literally stopped. Jocelyn says before they intubated jared, she was able to facetime him and they said i love you to each other before jared was placed on a ventilator. Jocelyn says jared was treated with the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine. His mother, father and stepfather all tested positive for the virus but all three of them are okay this morning. There is no wonder drug yet. David begnaud for us. Thank you very much. Lets talk about the governments top Infectious Disease expert. Hes facing blowback for appearing to contradict president trump. Over the weekend, dr. Anthony fauci suggested lives could have been saved if the president had acted sooner on warnings about the pandemic. Paula reid is at the white house for us, and shes been following this. Good morning. Could dr. Fauci lose his job over this . Good morning. Tony, the doctor is under fire from the president and his allies online after comments he made over the weekend suggesting the Trump Administration was slow to heed warnings about the coronavirus. This morning, the white house has declined to comment on our questions about whether the president has lost confidence in his top doctor. Now this all started over the weekend when the New York Times reported that the president was warned about a pandemic at the end of january. And top officials wanted to implement social distancing in february. Fauci seemed to corroborate these reports over the weekend when he confirmed that he believed that lives could have been saved if social distancing had been implemented in february. I mean, obviously, if we had, right from the very beginning, shut everything down it may have been a little bit different, but there was a lot of pushback about shutting things down back then. Reporter on twitter last night, the president pushed back against the New York Times report describing it as fake news and he retweeted a comment that included the hash tag firefauci. It included a reference to a press conference where the doctor claimed the u. S. Overall was at low risk, even though he said in the same press conference that the situation was changing. Now looking ahead to reopening the country, dr. Fauci said this wont be a one size fits all. Its not like just flipping a switch. He hopes that at the end of the month the white house can assess different parts of the country and look to see if there are areas where they can start to work with local leaders to reopen the economy. And as for those much anticipated stimulus checks, over the weekend, the irs says it has begun sending those to eligible americans who already have direct deposit set up with the government. Gayle . A lot of news there. Thank you very much, paula. In addition to the Economic Uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, a big part of the decision on when to reduce mitigation efforts has to do with knowing who is immune in the first place. Our dr. David agus joins us from los angeles with new information on that. Good morning to you david. Weve been hearing a lot about this Antibody Test. Its been getting a lot of news lately. So, first, tell us what kind of test is it, and what exactly will it show . So this is a blood test that shows if you have had in the past tense coronavirus. So about 50 of people, up to 50 who have coronavirus dont even know they have it. They have no symptoms. Its critical we get an accurate number of the people in the country who have actually been exposed to the virus and it will tell us if theyre immune, if they cant get it again and if they cant spread it to others. So if you have the antibodies, how long are you immune . Thats the milliondollar question. We dont know. This virus has only been studied since middecember. So we dont know whether its going to be a year, two years or five years. My gut is if you have enough antibodies in the test, you have at least a year of immunity. After that were just going to learn as we go. David, this virus does seem to be a moving target. I heard somebody give the analogy, its like learning to fly the plane while youre flying the plane. Is that a good analogy to describe what were dealing with here . Its an apt analogy for sure. Every virus when it comes as evolved and its a new entity. We dont know how it behaves. We dont know how to treat it or prevent it. We dont even know how infectious it is. Were learning that its more infectious than we thought. So were in a new area now that, you know, every time we see a patient, were learning something about the virus. My hope and prayers are were sharing all the data so we can all learn together. So the thing about the Antibody Test if you get it, you want to test positive because it shows youve had it. And if once it shows youve had it, what good what can we do with that information . How will this help lessen things up about when we can go back outside again . Its a critical test. Its a test where there are now many available, but most of them across the country that are available are not very good. So its critical that dont get one yet. The new ones that should work well, were told, will be out later this week. But it says whether you can no longer get the virus and you cant spread the virus. So this is going to be a certificate of immunity if you will, where you can go back to work without worrying. You can be exposed to somebody with the virus and not worry about catching it. You can care with somebody about the virus and not catch it yourself. Thats critically important when we do policy in the United States. Yeah, and this also sounds like a test everybody should get since you can have the virus and not have the symptoms, correct . Its not should get. Will get. We have to test the whole country in order to open the country. You have to know your status so you can know how to behave and you can know your own risk factors before we open up the country. All right. Thank you very much, dr. David agus. Thanks. Thanks, david. Tens of millions of americans celebrated easter, in spite of stayathome orders and directives. Some of them had to wait in long lines at food banks. Others went to church. Parishioners packed this church in orlando, and many of them had no masks. Gayle as the pandemic has grown, medical professionals have quickly experienced shortages of the critical supplies that they need. And theyre talking about it, too. One emergency room nurse said Jacobi Medical Center in the bronx in new york spoke to 60 minutes bill whitaker. The nurse said its unacceptable for the richest country in the world to run out of medical equipment. And i know its a pandemic, and we its just really hard for us to accept the fact that this is the best that we can do. I wouldnt wish this upon anybody. Were running out of supplies that its not justice the ppe and ventilators, were running out of iv pumps, stuff we never ran out of before. It is unacceptable. Yeah, doesnt make us sound like a global superpower. Its another country, china, that produces more ppe than anyone else in the world. And the Chinese Government now says it will impose tougher restrictions on ppe before its shipped out of the country. Other governments, private companies, and nonprofits plus profiteers are competing for the critical supplies. Chief correspondent jim axelrod shows how buyers in the United States are struggling to get what they need. We need the masks, the respirators, all the gowns, the gloves. Reporter aubrey layne is virginias finance secretary, responsible for purchasing his States Supply of ppe or personal protective equipment. Right now, were buying whatever we can get. Reporter chinas consultant represents three local manufacturers that he says sells medical supplies. Mostly to foreign governments. There is a massive world demands, and they are not going to wait for people to dither around. Reporter competing buyers, he says, are not holding back. As theyre going up to factories with truckloads of cash and taking the entire production. Reporter earlier this month a shipment of 80,000 masks arrived at this hospital in northern new jersey. The delivery didnt come courtesy of the state Health Department but from a nonprofit called helena. The group is buying up ppe at inflated costs and selling it back to hospitals at its normal price. Henry elkus is one of the founder. Sometimes within an hour the purchase would get sniped away by other parties. Maybe add a zero to the price and sell it to hospitals later or hold the product. Reporter how much price gouging is going on . We see masks that should be under 1 go for 5. It hurts. Its business and profit motive trumping real lives. Reporter he says hes one of many private donors filling the gap where governments have fallen shorts. There is not a project we should be doing. This should be something that is being taken care of by the government. Reporter virginias finance secretary aubrey layne agrees the feds need to step up because hes worried about who hes dealing with. You dont really know when the orders will be filled or if the orders will be filled. Hopefully its more a matter of when and not if. But even that a we wont know until the planes or cargo gets here. What do you have . Hippity, hoppety. Good morning. We are safe, healthy here. Working from home like millions of americans. And while were working from home, guys, were always checking out the stories we think youll be talking about, including this british Prime Minister Boris Johnson is at his Country House after a weeklong hospital stay to battle the coronavirus. Johnson spent four days in intensive care and said it could have gone either way. In a video, he thanked Britains National Health Service for saving his life. And the reason in the end my body did start to get enough oxygen was because for every second of the night they were watching, and they were thinking and caring and making the interventions i needed. Johnson singled out two nurses in particular who stayed by his bedside for 48 hours. Yeah. An amazing case. Maybe the most famous case of coronavirus on the planet. Were happy to see him out of the hospital. Although noteworthy that hes not resumed his position as the head of the country there. Still recovering. We wish him a speedy one. A lot of disruption with this virus, including to the foot supply in this country. Whats amazon doing about surging demand for grocery deliveries . So, there is really interesting, tony. Amazon is putting new grocery delivery customers on a wait list. Many longtime customer vs. Found they couldnt place grocery orders due to lack of available delivery slots. If you havent noticed, if you look at the first what to watch that we were working from home to todays what to watch, im definitely filling out this shirt, filling out these jeans. Yes. We all need social distancing from the fridge. I know. I know. Theyre talking about quarantine 30 instead of quarantine 15. Vlad, youre talking about nurses. Thank you, thank you, thank you. John krasinski strikes again. He does, indeed. We love these stories where folks are thanking our firstline responders, medical professionals. The red sox are going to donate four tickets for life. What . You and everybody at beth israeli . Yes. Theyre like, what . So after that surprise, the gup was given a ride to group was given a ride to fenway park and they headed to the field where the entire team thanked them on the video board, anthony. Got to love it. You know, im a mets fan, and even i know how awesome that is. Thats really for life. Youre right. Gayles like, John Krasinski strikes again. That was earmark, really awesome really, really awesome. Im getting used to the zoom zoom. I like it. Were going to get to the coronavirus pandemic in just a minute. First, tens of millions of people are bracing for dangerous winds today after deadly storms hit the south on easter sunday. Leaving at least 18 dead, parts of monroe, louisiana were just devastated by a suspected tornado. It tore through the city. Anthony . And the damage continued as the storms moved east. Jessie mitchel is in georgia north of atlanta where a tornado killed five people overnight. Whats it looking like on the ground there now . Reporter good morning. The people of georgia were already dealing with this deadly pandemic ordered to stay at home. Now some of them have no home. Here you can see the path of the storm behind me ripped the roof off this apartment building. Theres a car under this tree right here. The woman in the apartment said she did get an alert on her phone which she is grateful for. Because it may have saved her life. Unfortunately, five more died not far from here with another here in georgia and the damage extends farther than that. Further west in mississippi, at least 11 were killed and one in arkansas. The destruction made maintaining social distancing hard for those in mississippi as they were forced into a shelter with other displaced residents. The governors in mississippi and georgia declared another state of emergency because of the weather. All told, the National Weather service says there were about 40 reported tornadoes across just about every Southern State overnight. And it doesnt stop there. Today wind advisories extend up the east coast all the way to massachusetts making a tough situation even tougher. Tony . As the if the pandemic were not enough. We have to deal with the tornadoes. Thank you very much. America has more deaths from the coronavirus now than any other nation in the world. More than 22,000 people have lost their lives. Thats right. The couple trading off on who gets a meal. They rely on disability payments, food stamps and a pantry that closed in march because it could no longer get food. Where will you go now for food . What pantry will you utilize . There isnt one. There isnt one that we can go to. In this town there were six pantries weeks ago. Now only three. Including this one. Three pantries is serve a community of 35,000 where many lost their jobs. Its almost 100,000 squares. Some driving 40 miles to get here. Youve been running this pantry more than 30 years. Have you ever seen demand like this . No. Its doubled. Everything were doing is doubled. Doubled. Just about every week it doubles. From one time to the other. Pantries in rural areas are closing experts say because they tend to be staffed by senior volunteers. For their safety, many of them are unable to come in, work at those pantries and therefore the pantries are not operational. Those that are getting food arent reaching everyone. Here we go. This is an hour from donna and leonards house. They cant afford the gas. Its humiliating, and having to admit that yeah, were starving, and things are tough, but were not the only ones. Whats in your wallet . South carolina senator tim scott is calling on the Trump Administration to monitor the impact of the coronavirus on communities of color. He is also the author of the new book Opportunity Knocks, which chronicles his childhood struggles in poverty and house is how we can use small failures as teaching tales. Senator scott joins us from outside charleston. Good morning, thank you so much for being with us. Good morning, good to be with you. Hope youre well. I want to get to the book in a moment. First, as we mentioned, youve spoken directly with the administration about the need for better outreach with minority communities about the coronavirus. What exactly would you like to see happen there . I think its really important for us to use all resources at our disposal to make sure that churches, small businesses, community centers, are all engaged in this fight to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Across america certainly. Specifically in the Africanamerican Community. Africanamericans represent about onethird of all hospitalizations, but only about 13 of the nations population. And youll find on most of the front lines in the Grocery Stores, some of the takeout services, youll see a lot of africanamericans working. What we want to make sure that we understand is that if you have a higher incidence of high Blood Pressure and asthma, its important for you to take the necessary precautions from wearing masks, washing hands, all the proet columbus. This is uniquely protocols. This is uniquely targeting the Africanamerican Community to show that we are fully prepared to undertake protocols that will save more lives than we have today. What were seeing in states like south carolina, 36 , 37 of those folks infected with the coronavirus with a population of only 27 . In michigan, 41 of the fatalities, 14 of the population. In louisiana, 70 of the fatalities, and only less than 30 of the population or the thereabout. In mississippi, over half of those infected and about 31 of the population therethereabouts. I think we can reduce that or flatten the curve in the Africanamerican Community. And it will help the nation as a whole. Only a handful of states actually collect data on these racial disparities. What do you think a federal tracking system might do to help doctors . Well, aggregating the information from the federal level will be very helpful. Were doing it in south carolina. I spoke with my governor. Hes on the game. Hes on spot. The data would help us to provide the type of information so that our Health Care Workers are as protected as possible. My mother spent over 45 years as a nurses aide in a hospital. So making sure that the frontline folks are taken care of is important. One of the challenges that we have Going Forward is if we can if we dont reduce the incidence of covid19 among our Health Care Workers, then whos going to take care of us . The most important thing we can do is protect that front line by putting a shield between them and their patients. The fastest way is to have fewer patients. The way you do that is by following the protocols, and the masks are very important. I talked to dr. Fauci interest that specifically a specifically about that and he said without question, masks help you not spread to your loved ones. So when youre talking with your grandmother or when youre visiting your father, it helps. Senator, were all getting the message about the masks, i think so. The president good morning pushing to reopen the country by may 1st good morning. Good to see you. The president as you know is pushing to reopen the country on may 1st. Dr. Fauci has said, listen, were on the virus timeline, not the other way around. It seems like Health Experts dont believe that this is the right move. Im wondering what youre seeing in your state of south carolina. Does it seem like the right move to you, to open may 1st . What ive seen is a lot of flexibility from the administration as it relates to what that date was. The date was april 15th, but the experts said that was that was premature. We saw it kicked to april 30th. As the information continues to be collected, i think youll see perhaps another shift if necessary. In south carolina, you know, weve had around 80 deaths, 2,500plus infections. I think we are handling it pretty well. We have some hot spots that were concerned with, but heres what we have to do the containment stlat gee was effective. The containment strategy is flattening the curve. For us to go back to work and for parents to send their kids back to schools, were going to need an abundance of testing. The finger prediction test in my prick test in my opinion is what we should be focused on. Making sure whos had it and also being able to have tests on demand. As we citizener it that market, youll see more energy toward opening the countrys economy back out. Without that certainty, i think everyones going to be challenged as we head into the end of april saying what we should do without an abundance of testing, especially the tests that tells us whos had it. Senator, in your book, you write about growing up in poverty and your journey to becoming a senator. What advice would you have for anybody right now, for anyone struggling out there . You know, hope springs eternal. One of the lessons of the book that youll learn when Opportunity Knocks is ive had health care challenges, ive unfortunately fell asleep driving a car down the interstate at 70 Miles Per Hour and wentwindshield, broke my ankle, ruined my football season, but i found faith. I fail friday business and found success after that. Ive lost campaigns but even in the aftermath of the campaign losses, opportunity knocked again, and i had an opportunity to get back in politics and to finally become a United States senator. I have had failure, failure, failure, and it always seems theres a simplver lining. That success follows failure like night follows day. Its been a blessing. I hope my story provides hope during these challenging times because the one thing im completely confident of is the best is yet to come for this nation and for most of us in this nation. We have very Bright Futures to look forward to. I hope we do. Senator scott, thank you so much. Opportunity knocks, on sale tomorrow. It. Ahead, how workers are keeping to keep Grocery Stores open during the pandemic. While millions of americans are under a stayathome order, many low live wage employees are putting themselves at risk to provide essential services to all of us. Grocery store workers, bus operators, and delivery drivers are being called the Unsung Heroes of the coronavirus pandemic. For the cbsn roinloriginal seri reverb, Adam Yamaguchi spoke with essential workers including a cashier about how they are staying safe. Kind of brought my crazy bag to work with me. This is my cell phone. This is my drink, how i take it into work. This is basically kind of like my new purse. Actually left the purse in the car, but this is all the stuff i want to bring to work when i come to work. Reporter sandy, who asked that her last name not be used or her employer, is one of a minority of Grocery Store employees that belongs to a union. Some days where ive had severe anxiety. I almost felt like i couldnt breathe. I was literally counting the minutes until i could punch out and at least take it off and get some air. I mean Health Care Workers and doctors and nurses is a much dangerous position. But sometimes i think they know what theyre walking into. You know, they know theyre walking into the room with a sick patient or potentially sick patient. In my profession, i have no idea what im walking into. I dont know if the customers are carriers or not carriers or potential carriers. So you know, i just try to be safety first. True. Its time it bring you some of the stories that are the talk of the table, plural this morning, since were coming to you from home we are at separate tables, but were still swapping stories. Tony, start us off. Hey, good morning. Couldnt hear you for a second, but im back. I can hear you now. We mentioned in the last half hour that food banks across the country are being stretched very thin right now with so Many Americans out of work because of the coronavirus and the lockdowns, the shelterinplace orders. I have some good news some help may be on the way. This morning, Smithfield Foods in virginia, one of the biggest pork processors, announced that it is donating more than ten Million Pounds of protein to food banks nationwide. Ten Million Pounds. That is the equivalents of more than 40 million servings, according to the company. Its about 350 truckloads. It will include ham, it will include hot dogs, it will include bacon. It is the largest donation in this companys history. Valued at more than 30 million. Good news for the people waiting in those lines. And as i talk about this and i think about being the cook in my family and the dinners im putting on my table, it also occurs to me that thats one of Many Companies out there up and down the food chain that are putting people into the field every day in order to make sure that some of the comforts of home in this difficult time are Still Available to us. I dont know what we would do without television and home cooking. And its because of Companies Like that and workers on the front lines that we have both of those things. And us, by the way. So thats my talk of the table. Gayle . Yeah. Were glad to be here. When you say comforts of home, did you say bacon, Tony Dokoupil . You had me at bacon. I love me some crispy bacon. Absolutely. My storys about tom hanks. Yes it makes everything better. I got you. My story is about tom hanks and saturday night live. Wow, wow, wow. Tom made his first tv appearance over the weekend since he and his wife, the lovely rita wilson, recovered from the coronavirus. The oscar winner hosted the first athome edition of saturday night live from his kitchen. Heres a look at how he started. Hey, its good to be here, though it is also very weird to be here hosting saturday night live from home. It is a strange time to try and be funny, but trying to be funny is snls whole thing. We thought, what the heck . Yep. Humor is so what we need. It was the first new episode of snl since production was shut down last month because of the outbreak. The show was filmed by cast members who are you know social distancing in their homes. So once again, it was zoom, zoom i call it zoomzoom. Its zoom, zoom to the rescue. It was well done, very creative. Anthony, if youre wondering, tom when he first came out, he said, im fine, im fine. My hair is shaved for a role. People thought is he okay. Its fine. Just for a role. It was great to see him. And humors so important at this time. It sure is. It was great to see all of them back. It really was. It was we need it. We need doses of that, big doses right now. All right. Heres my story. Something that showed up on one of my feeds that i really love. The fan of singer Freddie Mercury found an entertaining way to kill time during the coronavirus lockdown. Take a look. [ laughter ] a man delighted his neighbors by standing on top of a roof and lipsynching some of mercurys famous performances with queen in 1985. He used a broomstick as his microphone. He has the moves down pretty well. He clearly watched the video a few times. His wife posted this is what my husband has resorted to. Gayle . I know its never boring in her house. Lets just say he came correct he was ready. Weve got another kind of performance for you that was really, really top, top, topnotch. Acclaimed singer and songwriter Andrea Bocelli is using his powerful voice to spread a message of hope during this very challenging, difficult, painful time. Bocelli performed amazing grace, and other spiritual songs yesterday in what he called an easter prayer at the historic cathedral in the italian city of milan. Lets listen. Ave maria [ singing in Foreign Language ] without an audience in accordance with the government regulations for social distancing. More than 26 Million People worldwide have watched that performance on youtube. That numbers actually now close to 3. 5 million. Andrea bocelli joins us for an interview youll see only on cbs this morning. There he is, Andrea Bocelli. First, thank you, thank you, thank you. Hi, good morning. Good morning to everybody. And thank you for this you were just what we need. Can you hear me . Okay. I can hear you. Go ahead. You were just what we needed on an easter sunday, andrea. Just what we needed. Well, i hope so because the music can help a lot, i think. In my experience, i can say that music is very important for the soul. Yes. You said, andrea, before you sang for us, you said this was not a concert that you were offering conditicert, that y were offering a prayer. You said you wanted to give the earth a big hug dhurg difficult time. We are returning the hug back to you. What was your thinking about offering a prayer to us . Well, i said when i received this invitation from the mayor of milan, i said, okay, im very happy to come. And this singing will be not an exhibition, will be not a concert, but it will be only a prayer because in this moment the only important thing is to pray to resolve as soon as possible this incredible problem. Yeah. Italy has been very hard hit, as you know. Im wondering how you and your family are dealing with that. And what are your thoughts about your country this morning . Well, if you have to stay all the day in the house, the day really becomes very long. But i tried yes first of all, i tried to speak with my sons. I read, i play, i i sing, and i try to have Beautiful Moments with my wife. So i leave my family yes. Yes. I think thats what were all doing. Im wondering what it was like for you. It was really beautiful, number one, to see you walk out to the microphone to sing amazing grace. What was it like to sing with no audience . How did that feel for you on the other side . Well, my problem my problem was not dont have the audience because when i sing at home, im used to being to sing without the audience. But the association was really strange painful because singing i thought to the people that had yesterday would have been in the church instead of they had to stay at home. So suffering, many of them suffering. So my thoughts were for them. What advice do you have for people who are struggling during this time . Youre so right that music is a very healing thing. But its still a very painful time. What is your message of hope for people who are struggling . This is very difficult for all of us. Well, i think i am an optimist. And the most important thing is dont lose the hope and to be convinced that very soon everything will be over. You still feel use still feel optimistic that it will be over soon . You feel that .
