The legislation is expected to be enacted within days and its meant to save struggling workers and businesses forced to shut their doors. The package includes a onetime cash payment for most working americans. Up to 1,200 for individuals, 3,000 per family. Boosting weekly benefits by 600. Theres a half trillion in loans for big businesses and nearly 4 billion in grants and loans for small businesses. This package will be the single largest main street Assistance Program in the history of the united states. Reporter stocks surged on the earlier optimism out of dc. The dow had its best day since 1933 and its biggest point gain ever. Stock futures were down, but briefly turned positive after report of the deal. Officials hope the onetime payments could go out to americans as soon as early april. A senate vote on the deal is expected to happen quickly with the house potentially following soon after. Susie steimle spoke with one supervisor who is going around the red tape so people in crowded shelters have a shot on the social distancing. In partnership with providence foundation, hes secured 20 hotel rooms at the oasis hotel for homeless families. This is a blessing for us anyway because it gives us a shower, refrigerator. I think its a good idea. Reporter julia eliot is also getting a room. I think its yell. And i think its necessary. There are plenty of empty hotel rooms at this time and there are plenty of people who need them. Reporter the city of San Francisco has about 34,000 hotel rooms and most of them are sitting vacant right now, including this one at the oasis. Dean prestons office secured this space for about 80 a night and tonight it will house a homeless family. And the city is not paying for this. Its all coming from private donations, including 10,000 from dean preston himself. The idea of putting the homeless in hotels was first floated by governor gavin newsom. His team identified 901 hotels that could house the homeless. Next mayor breed identified 3,000 rooms in San Francisco. The mayor intends to prioritize first responders, people in sros and patient who is have the virus and need to be discharged from the hospital to quarantine. If you only had a couple thousand rooms available, then the citys approach would make sense. But we have an estimated 30,000 hotel rooms sitting vacant. Reporter preston cautions if we dont find a way to create some distance for people in crowded shelters, our own social distancing might not do much good. Its not enough to do everything right with respect to one small segment of the population because we have People Living in big congregate living situations and theres a serious risk that those folks spread the virus amongst themselves and out in the community. The source says it will flatten out if people follow the shelter in place order. If people continue to gather in groups, its going to be bad. Tonight in the city, we see social distancing. The Emergency Management source says it will take three to 4 weeks to know for sure whether our shelter in place is working, but it is believed the fact that the bay area started earlier than new york could make a difference.
