This is the final opportunity for voters to see all the candidates together before saturdays South Carolina primary and super tuesday which, by the way, is one week from today. Tonights debate may also be the last chance for rivals to go after frontrunner Bernie Sanders. The big question this morning can anyone slow down the surging sanders campaign. Well talk about all of that with our cbs panel and political contributors. Right now anthony and tonight and tony are standing by in new york. I have to say, how does it look . Pretty grand. They know a thing or two about debates. Mook, as you know is Hillary Clintons 2016 Campaign Manager and marco rubios president ial campaign and he has a long resume in South Carolina politics. I am really glad that you guys are here because they told me this is a really big deal. Who do you think who has most at stake tonight . There are so many storylines between bernie sand e jers, joe biden, Mike Bloomberg. Who has the most at stake tonight . Robbie, start us off. Bernie sanders has the most at stake. His numbers are slipping here. Its been tightening up and that always happens. You look for moments when you can change things up and this is a moment for him to do it. Bloomberg has a lot because the last time it didnt go so well so it is incumbent on him to do well this time, but overall this week, biden has the most at stake. You see that, too . Biden not doing so well, and other than that, how was the play . It did not go well. Yeah. This is bernies to lose and he just has to run the clock out. At this point in time hes leading in all of the super tuesday states expect the in alabama, every single super tuesday state and he has a solid lead and it is three day away. Yes. Where bernie really stands to gain i think bloomberg put out a memo, they were anticipating he gets 30 of the vote and the 45 of the delegates and i dont but bernie will get proportionately more delegates than the vote because candidates who get 14 they get nothing so they go to people who are viable like bernie. As you point out, it didnt go well for Mike Bloomberg and he himself admitted it is not his finest hour, what does he need to do tonight . I dont know. Will it make a difference if he comes out tonight and he is successful . He needs to survive. Thats important. Okay. They are empty but tonight they will be the focus of the political world and the room will be packed. These are the candidates who will be swearing not swearing off but squaring off and the stakes could not be higher. Four days from now voters cast their ballots in the South Carolina primary with 54 delegates at stake there and one week from today we have super tuesday with, listen to this, more than 1300 delegates up for grabs. Bernie sanders leads in total delegates after winning in New Hampshire and nevada. Another strong showing in South Carolina followed by super tuesday wins could make him extremely difficult to beat. They are already calling it, guys, a sanders surge. Norah, lets begin with you. The latest cbs poll from us found majority voters think President Trump will win a second term. What do you think that says about what voters are looking for tonight . I think tonight the gloves are going to come off. This is the final debate not only before South Carolina but you outlined it super tuesday, which is the bonanza of delegates for them. Sanders is the frontrunner. Watch for everybody whose name does not end with sanders to take him on tonight. Last night feeling the pressure, sanders for the first time outlined just how much all of his proposals cost, which are between 50 and 60 trillion. And he just released it last night. Attempted to release a way of how hes going to pay for that. With new taxes, lawsuits, cuts to military programs. Its not clear yet that the math adds up, but its more specific than he has been in the past knowing this is going to be the charge, that you cannot win with a democratic socialist at the top of the ticket. Thats the charge that these democrats are going to make. Thats why the cbs news poll reflects that right now 65 of americans think the president will win reelection. Also weve been here since friday. Many of the people, margaret, have said they havent made up their mind. 80 are waiting to see whats going to happen tonight. We have super tuesday as well. When you think about that, whats at stake for all of the candidates here that will join us on stage. For some of these candidates su survival, others momentum. Not everybody is going to make it after tonight. Thats right. Particularly when you look at some of the spending. I interviewed joe biden over the weekend and he highlighted in this state in particular, which he has seen as his firewall. He may not like the word but that is, the backstop to stop that slide, he has been outspent and he has been outstaffed in South Carolina by billionaire tom steyer. He knows its thinning out some of his support here particularly among africanamerican voters who he is banking on to show up and solidify him as the alternative, viable alternative to Bernie Sanders. So thats what tonight they are going to try to demonstrate as norah laid out. There will be a target on Bernie Sanders back, also one on Michael Bloomberg. I think its worth spending a moment to describe the dire situation for Vice President biden. Look at the percentage difference in the first three contests, 11 points behind in iowa for Bernie Sanders. Then he was behind more than that in New Hampshire, 17 points, and then nevada 26 points. That is a deeply negative trajectory. Its not as if Bernie Sanders and joe biden havent been squaring off, they have been. This is not the case the Biden Campaign wanted to find themselves. This is a desperate situation for the Vice President to be in. Firewall doesnt begin to describe how tough the situation is for Vice President biden. And it is similarly difficult if your name is Pete Buttigieg or amy klobuchar. Youve got to figure out a way to differentiate yourself and make yourself the central alternative to senator sanders. Started in the fall he was an overwhelming lead here. Hes watched that lead shrink and shrink and shrink. The voters here who were behind him have seen his lackluster showing in the early caucuses and New Hampshire primary and they are paying attention like everybody else. Biden slowly has seen his support here, his black support here, drip away. This will be the first primary well see a significant black electorate who will be turning out, say they will be turning out, of 60 , which is the majority. How significant is the black vote tonight partnering on the caucus debate. The black vote here is the race. As you were saying in general, in primaries across the country, the black vote is about a quarter of the electorate. Here its 60 . You cannot win in South Carolina without winning the black vote. As you reported, joe biden will have the endorsement of James Clyburn, the kingmaker in this state, longest serving africanamerican leader in the state. Well see if that makes a difference for him. What youll see is the ideological fight for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party. Whether you want a democratic socialist, then senator warren, bloomberg, a wall street democrat, who in the past has been a republican. Thats going to be the fight. How much do we want to spend. How much social provides will the Democratic Party provide and be paid for by taxes. This will be so full of substance. There are issues where many of the democrats who are running against Bernie Sanders have said, and my talking to their campaigns, they do not believe his record has been fully examined, even though hes run for president before against hillary. Bernie sanders may have some explaining to do with his latest comments where he was talking about fidel castro and hes doubled down on the comments as we go into the debate tonight. He not only doubled down on them but invoked china. Gone to war with apac, lobbying arm. He has thrown a few bombs, so to speak, politically, that he will certainly be pressed on tonight. In some ways what im looking for, because its such a critical moment, these candidates have to start presenting what their vision is versus saying im running against the guy who has the job right now. They have been running against President Trump and saying i will be better defining exactly what that vision for what they are selling to the American People is where were going to start seeing them nudge out. Looking especially crucial for Elizabeth Warren. I mean, this is a big night for her. She started off sort of gang busters. Again, as with biden, shes had a lackluster performance in these early races. This is the place where she has to pull herself out of the pack. An analogy for Elizabeth Warren she built her campaign steadily from april to october. Then what happened . When she started getting deeply specific on numbers for medicare for all theres a reappraisal. Were now seeing Bernie Sanders for the first time start to get specific about his numbers. Will that invoke the same reappraisal that damaged Elizabeth Warren. Also, a week ago, what was everyone talking about . We barely mentioned it tonight, Michael Bloomberg. That shows you how rapidly things turn around. One bad debate performance can make you an also ran. He has to have a better performance to make a First Impression second time around. I was just, it was a huge relief, really. It was a huge relief that the jury got it. I felt just very grateful that they, that i had been heard and believed, and, yeah, i mean, im still processing, i think. But it was just like a relief. Did you feel the jury may not rule in your favor . I wasnt sure what was going to happen, to be honest. I wasnt, you know, i mean, the statistics say that most rapists go, walk. So, i didnt know which way it would go. But im just very relieved and grateful and happy that it feels like were making progress. This verdict demonstrates cases like yours can be brought and the charges can be successful. So im curious, what do you hope other survivors take away from your experience and this verdict . Well, i mean, im just i just think that were being educated about the reality of Sexual Assaults and Sexual Assault victims, and what Sexual Assaults usually more often than not involve. Its not always just a stranger. It is very often somebody that the person knows, you know. So, and with that comes an entire other layer of processing, you know, when its somebody that you know. There is a whole nother layer of processing where you dont like emotional confusion. Why did this person do this . How could this person have done this to me . So, yeah, thats what i hope that we are more realistic from now on about Sexual Assaults. Gloria, what impact do you think this verdict is going to have on future Sexual Assault cases, including the next Harvey Weinstein case . Well, anthony, this is the reckoning. I mean, this is the time when we have the empowerment of women, when women are not only speaking up and speaking out, but willing to testify in a court of law under oath, to tell the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth so help them god. That is a whole different level because on this level consequences can be imposed as a result of mimis courage, he be sentenced to ten years to 25 years in prison. This is the most serious charj in which he was convicted, the. Eaimnscr that others who are out there thinking of hurting women or who already have committed crimes of gender violence against women should understand they may be next because there are going to be consequences. And this is the way we start to begin to stop violence against women when those who are going to hurt them know that there could be serious consequences. And even if you are rich, even if you are powerful, even if you are famous like Harvey Weinstein, you are also subject to the law and you dont have a special license to hurt women. So, its because of her courage that this has happened. We cant thank the jury and prosecutors enough. Were you surprised the jury got caught up in the predatory Sexual Assault charge and did not convict . Well, its a very highdeurn a reasonable doubt. I dont know if they were comp mics in the jury, i dont know. We will have to wait for the jury to decide. But whatever took place in the jury, its not a reflection of annabella. I mean, she was brave. She sacrificed so much time. She went through so much in this case. I am honored to know and she is a real hero, as mimi is, as lauren is to the womens movement, to the victims rights movement, and we are moving forward for women as a result of her courage. Researchers exposed voiceactivated devices like the amazon echo apple siri to about 125 hours of netflix to see how they respond to words that sound like their activation words. They found the devices accidentally started recording up to 19 times a day for up to 43 seconds. It was interesting because tv shows Gilmore Girls and the office were responsible for the most activations because they have the most dialogue. And it happened when, for example, the word like seriously, which sounds like siri, that would activate apple devices. Now, there is good news in this because they found, they said, no evidence that devices are constantly recording your conversations. But they do turn on. They are always listening for the wake word. We are going to stick with a story here in charleston, South Carolina, that has a lot of meaning to the people here. The emanuel ame church. Its a symbol of resilience and hope. Five years ago, we know this story, in june of fwooen 2015 a white supremacist shot and killed nine worshippers the Historic Church known for the political activism. Dylann roof was convicted in 2016 of all 33 federal charges, including hate crimes. We visited the church over the weekend. Its known as mother emanuel, to see how its turning tragedy into action. We spoke to House Majority whip James Clyburn who is expected to endorse former Vice President joe biden after this debate. He showed us how the church has become a base camp in the fight for change. This is, of course, the sanctuary. Its beautiful. Reporter reverend eric manning oversees mother emanuel, the oldest black congregation south of baltimore. Reporter a church that has been involved nearly every Political Movementn since its founding in 1816. Reverend manning started leading in congregation about a year after the shooting deft nine parishioners, including the beloved pastor clementa pinckney. How difficult for you . I imagine so many people leaned on you to bring them back to a new normal . Gayle, i think that process is still going on. We never fully understand the amount of trauma a church, especially within the Africanamerican Community, experiences when that type of hatred is displayed. Repr hred that75yeard pols aloo well. Reporter i have heard that you would like to minister him in prison s that true . I would. Reporter what would you say to him . I would go strictly by the bible and go into the forgiveness part and teach him how love is. Reporter you said to heal, you have to forgive. Have you forgiven . Have you healed . Im healing. Reporter where do you think we are as a country . As we sit here today. Well, racism is still alive and well. Thats a fact. I dont know what we can do about it. When things happen, then we all come together. But after a while we go back to the same old things we have been doing. Reporter prayer and politics intersect often at mother emanuel. How many of you reporter on this day a Political Movement is taking shape in the churchs basement. The site of the horrific mass shooting. If you ever run for office reporter thats where we met House Majority whip James Clyburn who is lending his political expertise to the Congressional Black Caucus institutes workshop. Why do you think this is necessary to empower the future black politicians . One of the mistakes especially in my party is not recognizing that there is talent in the Africanamerican Community beyond that which is traditional, and in order to make sure that we get beyond tradition is one of the reasons that we started the bootcamp. Reporter the nonpartisan political bootcamp aims to improve access to advocacy in training for all americans, free of charge. What do you hope they learn touri during that time . We are hopeful they will learn that politics is more than a science to be studied. It is an art to be practiced. Because art, you never perfect the art. Reporter as congressman clyburn helps build a future pipeline of politicians, South Carolinas king maker sounds off on the current democratic field. There are no people of color on it. Does that bother you . No, it doesnt bother me. We cant guarantee success. We can guarantee opportunity. And what the dnc did was guarantee opportunity. We started out with a big number, and thats one of the reasons we had the bootcamp. Teach people how to fundraise. Because what that, people of color, out of this contest, more than anything else, was being able to afford to get their message out. Reporter here in South Carolina 60 of democratic voters are black making this first in the south primary a test of who can connect with black voters. South carolina will tell a very important story when that vote comes in. Thats true. South carolina is a very conservative state, but there is something about fundamental fairness that you get in South Carolinans. You look through history, you never saw the acrimony in South Carolina that you got in mississippi, alabama. Reporter i like that fundamental fairness. I like that. Yeah, there is a fundamental fairness in South Carolina. Reporter a state with a sense of fundamental fairness. A Community Fighting against hatred. And a sacred space that embodies the power of forgiveness. What do you say to people that say, that are struggling with this message of its so divisive, so hateful, the rhetoric is out there, what is your message to those people . I usually say you have to learn, communicate and try to get along. Love is the answer to everything. Boy, Polly Sheppard hopes to see a more United Country soon, she says. She thinks some of the divisive rhetoric is coming from the top down. She doesnt know who she will vote for yet. She might make a spur of the moment decision based on what she hears at to tonights democratic debate. She will be watching. She also told us that she has narrowed it down to two candidates. Two.
