President ial campaign. Intelligence Officials Say the russians are using disinformation and propaganda to help President Trump and Bernie Sanders. At a Campaign Rally in las vegas on friday President Trump dismissed those warnings as a partisan attack against him. Russia denies it is interfering in the president ial campaign. Jan crawford has more. Cbs news learned that lawmakers were briefed before the president about potential russian interference and as you can expect the president was not happy about any of this. They said today that putin wants to be sure that trump gets elected. Here we go. Reporter apartment his last fep before returning to washington yesterday President Trump brushed aside reports that return president putin has his eye on the 2020 election. Mr. Trumps potential 2020 rival senator Bernie Sanders is also being floated as a likely russian target, democrat jim himes believe neither candidate is the sole reason for interference. This really isnt about donald trump or Bernie Sanders. This is about the fact, i believe, to the core of my being that the russians are going to try to do exactly what they did in 2016 again in 2020. Theres never been accountability for the russians for what they did in 2016. Reporter senator sanders claimed he was briefed on the russian meddling reports over a month ago but in an earlier statement sanders said his message to put wynn is stay out of american elections. Meanwhile President Trump will be traveling to india tomorrow where hell meet with Prime Minister modi on monday. Jeff thank you very much. The democratic president ial candidates hold their next nominating contest today in nevada. Latest poll shows Bernie Sanders holding a double digit lead over the rest of the field. Nevada is the third state to hold a primary or caucus this election cycle. After finishing at or near the top in iowa and New Hampshire Sanders Campaign could get another big boost today. Ed okeefe is in las vegas. Mr. Okeefe, good morning. Reporter good morning, mr. Glor. Already 75,000 people have cast ballots early in this state. Thats almost as many as caucused four years ago. Despite the rain around lunch time today nevadians will head to high schools, libraries and some hotels here on the trip to cast ballots in this race. Its one of the candidate who are not competing here in navy facing scrutiny and making changes, Mike Bloomberg. Former new york Mike Bloomberg says his company will allow threechoose. In a statement he said i recognize that ndas promote a culture of silence in the workplace. But some opponents say bloomberg needs to do more. Just not good enough. If he wants to be the democratic nominee, and he wants to be the president of the United States, then hes going to have to be fully transparent on this issue. Reporter bloomberg isnt competing in nevada and candidates who are like former Vice President joe biden spent friday looking for last minute support. Look, the good news is the field is narrowing. The better news is youre all taking closer looks at the other guys now. Youre all taking a real good look. They are not bad folks. They are just not democrats. Reporter polls here give Bernie Sanders a comfortable lead. The sanders is so confident of his chances he spent most of friday campaigning in california which doesnt vote until next month. I have news for the democratic establishment. They cant stop us. Reporter opponents like mayor buttigieg worry sanders a selfdescribed democratic socialist will end up alienating too many voters. Hes the frontrunner by many measures. Im the only candidate who has beaten him at all and that was by the slimmest of margins in iowa. We need to ask whether we want that to be how we compete against donald trump or if theres a better way. Mr. Okeefe which candidate has the most to gain or lose in this caucus . Reporter well, michele, if Bernie Sanders pulls it off it add tots his momentum and case to win the democratic nomination. Send chills down the backs of more moderate democrats who worry about a democratic socialist becoming the nominee. Joe biden and Elizabeth Warren weeks ago were seen as powerful, likely contenders for the nomination and have struggled to find support in iowa and New Hampshire if they could come in second or third here in nevada it would help. A Record Number of people watched the debate on wednesday night. 20 million. Is there a sense of which candidate can harness their performance in that debate into support tonight . Reporter well, support here in nevada not necessarily. The one that faces the most questions still about what went on in that debate is Mike Bloomberg who, of course, isnt competing here in nevada and will make his next appearance in our South Carolina debate next week. Beyond him, it will be interesting to see if someone like, again, warren or mayor buttigieg perhaps do better than expected here in nevada and if that had anything to do with their debate performance. Remember in New Hampshire Amy Klobuchar had a great debate performance and placed third. So much early voting there which may have an impact on that too. We know what happened in iowa with the caucus. Whats the Nevada Democratic party to ensure these results in the caucus are reported correctly . Reporter well, for one thing they are using a combination of ipads and google documents to do the math today. So while that might mean its more efficient it also could mean theres potential for math and Technology Problems similar to what we saw in iowa. The party tried to make some changes here after seeing what happened in iowa but there are still concerns that precinct captains and others running caucuses across the state might not be able to use that software or there could be delays. Dont presume well have results by the end of today. It could bleed into tomorrow. Thats typical. It takes a little longer to couldnt here. It could cause concern for democrats nationwide if in the first three contests two of them took a while to do the counting. Thank you, ed. A reminder cbs evening news anchor Norah Odonnell and gayle king will moderate the next president ial debate from charleston, South Carolina this tuesday night right here on cbs. I think about my father about the dreams he had for a lucrative, successful career was very much shattered by the internment. He drank too much. He died at 59. When we were moved in may of 1942, i was 4 years old. When she was interned christina came down with pneumonia and separated from her family. They put me in a van that was totally dark and the door closed and it was black. It had a big impact on my memory. In all 120,000 japaneseamericans were put into internment camps. Youre watching cbs this morning saturday. This is a story of the American Dream. It starts here, in a middle class neighborhood with a middle class kid named mike. When his father died, his mother went to work and became the breadwinner. She instilled in mike a belief in hard work and a drive to build a better life. So he sta scratch with an idea and endless hours today, that makes him the only democrat in the race whos created 20,000 jobs. Hes the only democrat whos run the largest and most diverse city in america, rebuilding after 911, creating over 450,000 jobs and expanding Health Care Coverage to 700,000 people. The only democrat whos built a Grassroots Movement to combat gun violence and hes a leader combatting climate change. The only democrat whos never taken a penny from special interests. Now mike is running to deliver on the American Dream for everyone with Common Sense Solutions and the ability to get it done. Because Mike Bloomberg is the only democrat who can take on trump. And trump knows it. Im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. Welcome everyone. Im jeff glor along with Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson. 80 years ago the world was at war and Winston Churchill was about to take overt0 downg et. Well talk to eric larson about the incredible challenge churchill faced trying to rally support from people on both side of the atlantic. Then from one of the citys dark days to brightest ones of the year its mardi gras. We go behindthescenes to see how mardi gras magic is made all year long. Later its a newspaper so old its first headlines were about the gold rush. It is still going strong thanks to a man with no experience in publishing a newspaper. How he turned a planned vacation into a rewarding new career. Thats all ahead. But first the latest on our top story this hour. U. S. Intelligence Officials Say russia is once again interfering in the president ial election. In a classified briefing last week lawmakers were told russia is helping President Trumps Reelection Campaign and senator Bernie Sanders acknowledged he was briefed last month about russian efforts to boost his candidacy. Sanders condemned russia on friday calling russian president putin a thug and told him to today out of u. S. Politics. In a Campaign Rally in las vegas President Trump minimized the intelligence findings and instead pointed the finger at democrats. They said today that putin tru gets elected. Here we go. Here we go again. Sanders also suggested the revelations were politically motivated. Hes leading ahead in the polls of todays nevada caucus. Russian ears interference on trumps behalf in the 2016 election. Were joined by jeff pegues who authored the book compromise, how russia compromised americas democracy. Jeff is in our washington bureau. Good morning. What are the main goals of the russians now . Is it bigger than favoring one specific candidate . Reporter good morning, jeff. It is bigger than one specific candidate and thats why this is such an important topic for people who are either democrats or republicans. This is take two of the russian influence campaign. Obviously they were not deterred in 2016. So what were hearing is that u. S. Intelligence officials have briefed both members of congress and the white house and what were hearing that is coming ou. So for Law Enforcement officials its important that they get the message out and thats what weve been seeing over the last several weeks, really over the last couple of years. The question is have they done enough to deter the russians from trying to influence the election process more . The good thing in this case is that u. S. Intelligence officials are seeing these signs early. In 2016 that didnt happen. Thats one of the reasons why i wrote the book. In 2016 there were Law Enforcement and intelligence officials who during theio novem started noticinhis and really getting alarmed by it. So in this case u. S. Intelligence and Law Enforcement officials are hip to what the russians are doing relatively early and thats perhaps a good sign. Jeff, is there any indication as to how these tactics have evolved . Reporter well they seem to be the same, michele. Thats the thing. The russians are trying to sow as much chaos, discord as possible by especially when i want comes to social media influencing what you see on your social media with fake accounts. Now social Media Companies have tried to push back on that over the last couple of years. Theyve tried to take down some of these fake accounts. But it is an impossible job to take down all of them and thats something that we learned when social Media Companies were also fighting isis fake personas online. And so it is a major task to stop these influence campaigns especially when you live in a country with cell phones. Everybody has cell phones in this country. Thats why we have become such targets for foreign adversaries intent on influencing what we see, what we hear, what we think. Which, in my opinion, and this is something i talk about in the book, is something that can ultimately lead to how you vote. Jeff pegues, a lot of information in there. Well continue to watch. Its just the beginning. It is about five minute after the hour right now. Heres a look at your weather for the weekend. They say he mobilized the english language and sent it into battle. Up next the storykest s world war ii. Hear how he rallied his nation and others. Well talk to the author of a fascinating new book. Youre watching cbs this morning saturday. Im tom steyer and i approve this message. Erratics book reads like a 21st century hit list. Devil in the white city. Dead wake. His latest effort is called splendid and the vile. It takes a look on what may have been the defining year of the 20th century after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of britain. He had two consuming goals. Hold off adolf hitler and seduce frank ly franklin roosevelt. He got plenty of help. In 1940 england was subjected to a Brutal Campaign of bombings called the blitz. As western europe fell britain held the line. They do not realize we shall never cease to persevere against them. Winston churchill led the charge to keep calm and carry on. I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. 80 years late eric larsons retelling of these events is the most riveting account yet. The day he became Prime Minister, it was the best dave his life. Larson got his idea to write about london by moving to new york. He left his longtime home on the west coast to settle in manhattan. There was something he couldnt stop thinking about. When i got to the city, i got this really vivid sense of how different 9 11 had to be for the city of new york, for residents in the city of new york. The smoke. The sirens. The ambulances. The whole thing. Plus the sense of violation that your home city has been attacked. How could anyone have survived the bombing of london during world war ii . First phase of the london bombing was 57 consecutive nights. Followed by an even more intensifying series of raids for six months after that. These bombings of london are, of course, part of hitlers invasion plan. London in that period it was a certainty someone somewhere in london would die. Whether you yourself killed depended on luck. Little does know the spirit of the british nation or the tough fiber of the londoner. Maybe i could write about hought about doing a family in london. I thought well why not the quintessential family, churchill and his family. And his advisors. How did they do it . I speak to you for the first time as Prime Minister. Larson begins the day churchill becomes Prime Minister. His choice to focus on the year that follows and the full 90 years that churchill lived threads a blistering pace. This is a narrative pod thats about perfect. Starts may 10, 1940, ends may 10, 1941. I had my window. When you have your window you look at things other scholars ignore. What did you find about him that others hadnt . Putting it together in this one period gives a richer sense of the broad churchill, the h a vyf and also advisors. He relied heavily on those advisors. They include an intellectual who no one could stan but churchill considered essential. And max akin, lord beaverbrook but a newspaper publisher who churchill put in charge of aircraft production. He had his family. He had i had family to worry about. I had family also supported him. I think if anything what i managed to do is provide this much more vivid sense how do you deal with that. The family members include churchills wife and larsons favorite character in the book, churchills youngest daughter mary. Mary churchill, 17 years old was this lovely charming smart person and i was very lucky that her daughter gave me permission to read and use her diary. The team that led britains through its most precarious year understood transatlantic messaging was everything. Let us go Forward Together with our united screen. His audience, his not so much the british people as it is the american people. Yes. This is something that churchill understood literally from day one. Only way well win this if america joins the war. He tells his sonoran dolphin exactly that. Well prevail by dragging america into the war. Nothing is more certain than every trace of hitlers foot steps will be blasted from the earth. We interviewed larson at the headquarters of the International Churchill society in washington, d. C. At George Washington university where lee pollock is the executive director. Does the world need more churchill biographies . People ask that all the time. Why another book . Same question people ask do we need another book about George Washington or napoleon or abraham lincoln. Great figures of history command our attention and theres aspects of history that we can continue to examine and reexamine. The society is full of a wide range of artifacts. This is a photograph of the cabinet war rooms called the churchill war roon london. Including this famous picture of churchill when he was not cooperating for the camera. When the photographer took his cigar away. Churchill glared. Theres a high bar for you on anything about churchill. Eric clarifies that. Hes a wonderful story teller and this is a wonderful story. Everything that happened. In that 12 month period there was never a dull day or a day when Something Interesting or important wasnt happening. Wherever the damage was worst churchill appeared symbol of british fortitude. He was aware of everything that he did had a symbolic effect. When he went and toured bombed out areas, well win, well do this thing, people took heart from that and he was aware at every turn what simple gestures meant. He knew there was a theater to it. He knew there was a theater to it absolutely. He he knew how to play the part . He was born to play that part. Voirk at all costs. Victory is vital. Victory no matter how long or hard the road may be. Without victory theres no survivor. Wow. Fascinating. The other part thats really fascinating about this book is that he talks about the frivolity. Churchill sang, danced. He maintained i had sense of humor and goes into this in the book quite a bit. Able to keep people laughing and smiling in the face of this horror. What a way of word. Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. Its the courage to continue that counts. What a mosto for life. Mobilizing the english language. If youre going through hell keep going. Everybody has his day and some days last longer than other. Selfhelp class. Good stuff. From across the pond to the big easy, thats a great segue. One of the most Amazing Things about it its not commercially sponsored. Shareholder of mardi gras, the citizens of new orleans and its a law you cant have commercial signs or pepsi on the sign of a float. Cant do it. Reporter to kern, party and everyone who in the city at the time there was one particular year when the sight of the floats rolling through the streets was especially meaningful. I remember standing at those parades months after katrina and people with tears rolling down their faces. What did it mean to get all mardi gras crews running again months after katrina. When you have tens of thousands people die, no one of thinking about mardi gras. We knew that it was very, very important to have those parades for many reasons. I think that when we did it and it happened i think everybody understood why it needed to happen. Reporter as new orleans continues to build, rebuild and grow, its clear that the one thing that weathers all storms is the spirit of the people that call this place home. And trump knows it. Im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. The crisis continues for americas newspaper industry. Just this month, owner of the miami hefrmiami herald, kansar filed for bankruptcy. This paper got its start in Southern California. One small paper managed to survive for a century and a half. With a new unlikely editor. Reporter this is a gold rush town which in the mid1800s was home to about 00le atn downeyvilles weekly newspaper the mountain messenger first rolled off the presses making it californias oldest weekly newspaper. Even mark twain once wrote for the messenger. For the past 30 years its owner, editor and delivery manager has been don russell. A man with a ready laugh. Who these days is even happier than usual. Free at last. Reporter russell was ready to retire but nobody wanted to buy the paper. Then carl butts showed up. Im just delighted that i found somebody stupid enough to take it over. Reporter butts who retired to downeyville about a decade ago cancelled a long vacation he had been planning and decided to invest in the mountain messenger instead and then he had no previous newspaper experience. I thought god im going around the world and the pap certificate gone ill feel guilty. When you bought the paper did the headline say sucker found. Pigeon found. Deadlines here are wednesday afternoon. Butts learned when russell took him to pick up the paper hot off the presses and started delivering it to newspaper boxes around the county. There you go. Why is the paper so important to downiville . This past year the bank went away. The gas station was closed. The down is dying. Local newspapers can be something that can hold a community together. Butts has no plans to modernize californias oldest weekly newspaper. Are your going to have an online edition. No. Hes not impressed by news posted on facebook. I mean whose going to be looking at those posts made 50 years from now . Nobody. But we put it on paper its going to exist. You fill dons shoes you got to work on your laugh. I cant do his laugh, no. Butts may be a pigeon, but hes also a savior. For cbs this morning saturday, john blackstone, San Francisco. Great laugh and great story. Congratulations. Im so blessed they let me curate this. In 2016 he was charged with expanding the conversation on africanamerican food. Thats whats so special about this museum. It connects all the people of african descent. The father of two said he wrote the book for his daughters. People think about plant based eating. We imagine these practices of upper middle class, white suburbanites, right . I think its important for me to recognize that my introduction to these ideas came from black people. Recipes inspired by traditional soul food where greens and legumes were the stars. This is a roasted potato and cabbage dish. The genesis of his professional Culinary Education came while earning his graduate degree in history at nyu. I was taking the subway and i see this group of young people, children at 7 00 in the morning eating chips, candy bars, drinking sodas. And it just hit me that, you know, these young people were eating, but they were calories. It was then he started be healthy which help kids make smarter choices about food. That led him to the chefs Training Program at the natural gourmet institute. His inspiration behind it all. The woman he invited to speak at the museum earlier this month. I joined the black Panther Party. Shes one of my primary focuses for wanting to start an organization that taught children about food. Erika huggins organized Community Programs as a member of the black Panther Party founded in 1966 by bobby seal and huey p. Newton. They were respondinglice ce. Were doing which was largely done by women, they were doing everything like having Ambulance Services to take people to the hospital. They had free away thousands off groceries and free breakfast for children whose aim was feeding young people a hot nourishing breakfast every single morning. Real food like the kind from his grandfathers backyard in mississippi which closely resembles todays farmers markets and csas. Communities share. Neighbors share. My father would be like ill give you a bag of walnuts, give me some of those pearce. He had so much he would give it away to all his children. Took the extra to church. What saddens me when i go back there its a shell of itself. Its a nationwide problem. According to the usda, 14 million households in america dont have access to affordable and nutritious food which could lead to dangerously highlights of hyper tension, heart disease, type ii diabetes and certain cancers. The. Theres a study about neighborhood in west oakland, california in 2008 and found there were 53 Corner Stores and Liquor Stores in this community and not one single supermarket.
