captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. for the first time in 50 years the kansas city chiefs are super bowl champions this morning. last night the chiefs led by quarterback patrick mahomes defeated the san francisco 49ers 31-20 in a thrilling come from behind victory. fans in kansas city erupted into wild cheers as their team clinched the nfl championship title. the chiefs are set to be honored at parade on wednesday in their hometown. laura podesta is here in new york. tell us more about the chiefs big win. >> reporter: this morning the kansas city chiefs are reveling in their first super bowl victory in 50 years. red and yellow confetti rained down on players at hard woke stadium in miami. fans back at home they couldn't contain their excitement. this played out all over kansas city. quarterback patrick mahomes helped the chiefs take charge leading to a defeat of the san francisco 49ers, 31-20. he helped the chiefs erase a 10-point deficit with three consecutive touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. >> if i knew a way to win in the end with these guys around me it's truly historic. >> reporter: mahomes is now the youngest quarterback to be named super bowl mvp. he joins tom brady to be the only one to do so before turning 25. >> i know the game was thrilling. when i checked out my social media, all the buzz before the halftime show with jennifer lopez and shakira. my favorite part of any super bowl is the halftime show performance. come on. there was a special guest there too. a bit of a surprise. >> reporter: jennifer lopez welcomed her daughter on stage. the 11-year-old stole the spotlight with her rendition of "let's get loud." backed by shakira on the drums. she sang along to bruce springsteen's hit of "born in the usa." j-lo wore a came showing the american and puerto rican flags which is a nod sue herera tag. they performed a immediately of hits including "jenny from the block" and shakira's "hips don't lie." the latina pop stars put on an iconic performance. >> sure seems like it. thank you very much. onto politics. democratic candidates are hoping for a political victory today. the first votes will be cast in the iowa caucus. over the weekend candidates hoping to unseat president trump crisscrossed the state in a last ditch effort to get votes. cbs news poll shows senator bernie sanders and former vice president joe biden locked in a tight race at the top. michael george is in des moines. michael, what have you seen in the final hours of campaigning? >> reporter: well, ann-marie, a close contest here in iowa and the candidates know it. they spent the weekend trying to get as much face time with voters as possible. when we talk to voters we hear a lot of excitement, engagement. democratic leaders are predicting the biggest turnout for the caucuses ever. >> we're going to beat donald trump. >> reporter: the final stretch. >> never had a greater responsibility than you have today. >> reporter: every second counts. >> our volunteers in a state of 3.1 million people have knocked on 500,000 doors. >> reporter: democratic candidates are making a last minute blitz across the state with campaign volunteers going door-to-door to rally support. these last few hours are crucial because even now there are some caucus goers who are still undecided. >> kind of open to everything. i haven't delved into it enough to really see what each one is backing right now. >> i'm still undecided. but i have like a top two or three. >> reporter: throwing a wrench in the race, the impeachment trial. the senators in the running have had to divide their time between iowa and capitol hill. and the trial resumes today. as the democratic senators head back to washington, president trump is sending dozens of his top aides here to iowa. >> reporter: is part of your visit here stealing some fun from democrats who are all over? >> it sounds like they are throwing their thunder and lightning at each other. >> reporter: former vice president biden and senator bernie sanders in a dead heat trailed by pete buttigieg and senators elizabeth warren and amy klobuchar. but voters second choices can play a role in the caucus so this remains anyone's race. so what's at stake here? candidates are hoping that because this is a first in the nation contest a win here could set the tone for the whole race. even set them up as the democratic front-runner. the last four democratic nominees got their first big win here in iowa. >> all right michael george, thank you so much. our iowa caucus coverage will continue with cbs "this morning". tony dokoupil is in des moines to bring us the latest news, polls and insight from the voters. >> closing arguments are set for today in the president's impeachment trial. house managers and president trump's defense team will return to the senate floor. on tuesday the president delivers his state of the union address. on wednesday senators will hold a vote which will likely end in an acquittal for mr. trump. in an interview with fox news the president said it will be hard to work with democrats moving forward. >> i would like to, but pretty hard when you think about it. they don't care about fairness. they don't care about lies. i'm not sure they can do it. i think they just want to win. >> on friday republicans blocked consideration of new witnesses and documents in the trial. now to the efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus. it has killed more than 360 people and infected more than 17,000 people around the world. most of them in china. there are 11 confirmed cases here in the u.s. the department of homeland security is warning airline passengers that their flights may be rerouted if officials discover that someone on board has been in china in the last 14 days. jonathan vigliotti has more on the travel restrictions which went into effect yesterday. >> reporter: u.s. citizens returning from china's hubei province will now face mandatory quarantines lasting as long as two weeks. their possible home upon return one of four military facilities around the country including california's travis air force base where up to 1,000 people could be held. non-u.s. citizens who have been in areas recently impacted by the coronavirus will be temporarily banned from entering the united states. the cdc said it's the first quarantine order by the federal government in over 50 years. the historic crackdown coming as more persons test positive for the virus. national security adviser robert o'brien speck on "face the nation". >> almost 15,000 cases of infection in china. 300 deaths. right now there's no reason for americans to panic. this is something that's a low risk we think in the u.s.. >> reporter: low risk but not no risk. a boston man tested positive on saturday. the student in his 20s returned from wuhan, china last tuesday one day before logan airport began screening for the virus. he's being monitored at his home. >> anyone who came into contact with him we're working on that situation when he came back from wuhan, china. he notified his medical professional right away. >> reporter: the infection is double that of the sars outbreak in 2002 but what many experts call encouraging the coronavirus mortality rate is significantly less. new information is emerging this morning about a stabbing attack in london. police say the 20-year-old suspect was released from prison last month after serving time for terrorism offenses. the man allegedly stabbed two people on a london treat yesterday. the victims are expected to survive. police say the suspect was also wearing a fake bomb. he was shot and killed by police. the suspect was jailed in 2018 for possession of terrorist documents and disseminating terrorist publication. coming up on the morning news now, a farewell to kobe bryant. details are expected to be released soon for his funeral. oscar preview. we'll show you the war movie that won big last night. this is the "cbs morning news". big last night. this is the "cbs morning news". ready to juvéderm it?
