He says when it comes to food waste, most research focuses on what happens after the harvest, and the home, the grocery store, or restaurant. We thought, why dont we go out and measure what is left in farmers fields . Reporter bakers team surveyed over 140 different fields and a few dozen farmers in northern and central california. The focus on 20 different handpicked crops, such as lettuce and tomatoes. As a firm crew harvested the field, the Research Team followed, collecting all the edible produce left behind. Then they would bring them in, classify the unharvested produce as to whether it might be too small, too big, not ripe enough, too ripe, some kind of defect and then we would weigh them. Results, staggering. Reporter an amazing amount of produce is left in the field. About five times per acre roughly a third of what is in the field after harvest left to rot. Even the growers were surprised. The food loss at the farm level exceeded their estimates by 150. 7 . 200 two times what the growers thought they would be. Absolutely devastating for us as farmers. Reporter Canon Michael is a resident of the farming company. He is the six generation of his family to work in the family farming business. Here, michael and his team farm a little over 11,000 acres including fields of fresh cilantro. As a farmer you dont want to reduce is a minute goes in doesnt go to user. They participated to help quantify the problem. We all thought it was a big issue, of course, not having the real reason behind it is helpful. Reporter as to what is behind the problem . There is no one simple answer but professor baker cautions to look beyond the farm. Farmers are not the problem but they are a part of a system that is broken. consumers expect perfection. Upkeep which result in high buyer specifications. Reporter here are five different heads of cauliflower, two are too small, one is big, one is sunburnt. Only one is just right and will go to market. Growers are operating under contracts. Reporter another issue, if the price drops or if there is an oversupply farmers can no longer afford to harvest a field and at that point it is cheaper to let it rot. Did not get an economic return is tough for us, but that is doubly hard to see great Quality Produce in the field just go to waste. Two of course thats heartbreaking to us because we know there are thousands of people that can really get use that produce. Reporter phase 2 of the study is underway how to get more of the food loss to the food banks. In alameda county, juliette goodrich, kpix 5. Some entrepreneurs have come up with a market to sell and perfect produce. Professor baker tells us that only takes care of a tiny percentage of all of the discarded produce. We have some good news to share with you tonight. A missing grandmother, and her grandkids found safe. 75yearold sandra young and the two kids were reported missing from fairfield on sunday. Youngs car was spotted wednesday morning and then along again interstate 80 and hercules this morning. They were finally stopped around 9 30 this morning. It is a blissful day today, prayers were answered. Im glad, im glad about that. Is actually pretty warm in this week that they are home, they get to be with their family. Fairfield police arent saying much about where the three may have been the past few days, onhave been reunited family. That is good news. Good news you would think as the rain but, already . All the snow in the sierra is the best news. That is good news but people are already coming up saying make it stop. [ laughter ] no. Too early for that. We just started. Heres the thing, we are not done with this first storm but i will spend most of my time focused on the next one coming our way which gets here saturday. We will start with the one out there. Look at the spin in the clouds. Can you see it . We are right in the center of it. That is the center of the storm that came through yesterday. Most of the actions out in front of it, like the rain and snow is over there. At the center is right on top of us. As long as we have the center we can get isolated showers maybe even an isolated thunderstorm. There is a good shower. Good example on the futurecast picks up on that. But what happens when i go into the forecast there is the line of rain, pretty good. We plan for what it kind of disappears for tonight. Look at friday, still spotty hit and miss showers, even through tomorrow. There is not a lot of him. Most of you wont get any rain tomorrow. But these isolated thunderstorms can happen anywhere and if you happen to be in a place they get that you get a brief little impressive downpour that will come from out of nowhere. Lets look ahead now because here is the next storm. It is not this wall of clouds, it is that one out there thats going to feel it. Going to switch from looking at the regular satellite and look at the water vapor which will look a little weird but this is a really important tool for the kind of storm coming our way on saturday. Watch what happens we play this forward as the line stretches all the way across the pacific and connects with california. That is an Atmospheric River. We are looking at the water vapor in the atmosphere. The brighter the color, the more water vapor. Look at the narrow bb coming out of the subtropics, pointing right at us. Those are the kinds of storms that can usually give us some of our best rain events. Now, this one is not a terribly strong Atmospheric River but, it is got that feeling nonetheless. We got to Pay Attention to the details. Here is the time it gets to saturday afternoon. Weve already started the beginning of the rain, but its really sunday when things get their most interesting with this. I will stop the futurecast on sunday morning early. What does that look like right there . That is that long line we were looking at out of the pacific. The most impressive rain will be in that band and if that just shifts 30 miles north or south you get a completely different forecast in a totally different kind of storm. We have to watch for the location on this right now. It is coming in close to the south bay as we get into sunday morning but it could easily shift right over the heart of the golden gate or go down to monterey. That is what makes Atmospheric Rivers and difficult in the forecast line. But, either way, this looks like a good rainmaker for much of northern california. Wherever the line happens to set up, we should be prepared for the idea going through monday. There could potentially be alive rain for us for that time period. It is nothing we couldnt handle, could be some minor localized letting may be some issues in the mountains, especially all of that will come into better view as we get closer to it. For right now your take away is thats a very looking very busy day very busy 70 looking forecast until you get to tuesday when we are getting much needed chance to get that break.
