If you look at the winds, now you see a bullseye. Thats a huge and dominant pattern of High Pressure parked over the four corners. Its gotten so big, its nudging our way and were feeling the warmth. Weve got to get rid of that and thats whats about to happen. Keep your eye here off the coast. We dont want clockwise spin. Instead we want counterclockwise spin and were about to get that. Watch what happens right there. Just kind of materializes seemingly out of nowhere. Four days from now. That gets us into wednesday afternoon. An area of low pressure sitting off our coast is how we cool down here. Sure enough, that shows up. By the time we get to the middle of the week, theres wednesday. Back down into the 80s inland and well stay in the 80s for inland locations. All the way through the rest of the 7day forecast, even going into the weekend. Well get cooler from there, in the mid 80s. Inland is where we needed this the most. Remember we werent really all that far above average for those of us in and around the bay directly. Pope francis was late to his sunday address at st. Peter square but he had an excuse. He was trapped in an elevator. This is a serious storm, yall. Lets get ready for it. Be prepared. Our top story at 6 30, Hurricane Dorian has slammed into the bahamas as a rare category 5 hurricane with lifethreatening storm surge and devastating winds. The question now is where will it head next . As the monster storm moves toward Floridas Atlantic coast, it has the potential to become one of the strongest storms of all time. Its so big, experts warn even a glancing blow could be punishing. Celebrity Chef Jose Andres is in the bahamas tonight to help with Hurricane Relief. He actually posted video of the conditions hes seeing right now and hes not even in the worst of it. To get a sense of how big this storm really is, the International Space station captured this video showing dorian churning across the atlantic. Reporter Nicole Killion yesterday in cocoa beach to jacksonville, florida where residents are preparing for the worst. Reporter President Trump and cabinet members met with fema officials who were moving food, water, and generators into the southeastern midwest. Beaches in jacksonville are shutting down tonight until further notice while residents and tourists keep a close eye on the storms track. The biggest concern is the path changes every day so you really dont know. Foropef w j gomeo be prepared ofhe rai repr ch a riou issuoresidents including people in mobile homes, barrier islands, and low lying areas. And in cocoa beach, Cape Canaveral hospital evacuated patients with the hurricanes path still uncertain. And because of those evacuation orders, the governor is suspending tolls on state highways to facilitate the flow of traffic for state employees. How destructive dorian has been in the bahamas, how concerned are florida residents about the storm . Whats your sense about that . I think theres definitely a heightened sense of anxiety now. As you mentioned, we were in cocoa beach yesterday. People were preparing and going through the motions but then today we certainly saw them put those plans into effect in of pva eation orders into effect. We saw that all up and down the coast whereas yesterday people were kind of taking more of a wait and see approach. Now they see this storm is coming and that it is going to impact the state in some form or fashion. You were in cocoa beach yesterday. Im assuming you went up i95, about a two and a half hour drive to jacksonville. What is that trip like . Were the winds fairly light and you havent seen that much of an indication of the storm yet . For us it was pretty smooth sailing and in part thats because some of these evacuation orders hadnt started taking effect. Were also going the opposite direction. A lot of the warnings are further south. For instance, in Brevard County where cocoa beach is located, further south in palm beach county, closer as you go into central and south florida. That being said, theyre still making preparations here but the storm is probably another two or three days out from being off of these shores. One thing we did notice, we saw a lot of power trucks going south and we do know many of these trucks are coming from other states across the country and trying to stage in areas now so they can be ready to respond should power go out because of the storm. Because dorian is marching north, im sure youll be doing the same in the next few days before and if it makes landfall, maybe wednesday or thursday. In jacksonville, Nicole Killion for cbs news. In terms of exactly where it is going, heres darren peck. This is an excruciating nail biter for florida. Heres one example why. Were going to go back to 8 00 this morning. Thats when the eye wall of the category 5 hurricane slammed into the outer banks and the outer reaches of the bahamas right there. Those were 185mileperhour winds wrapped up around the core of tha the view now. Were going to leave behind the easy to recognize visible satellite. Were going to go to infrared. This is updated to here and now. Thats where the hurricane is now. Still a category 5. Its now moving directly over grand bahama. If youve ever been to the bahamas or you have friends and family who are there, nassau is the island most of us think of. Nassau is still experiencing some pretty intense storminess. Nasa nassau is where there is a community of people who are about to experience the most intense possible hurricane you can move right over. Thats the bahamas. Now here comes floridas story. Watch how excruciating this is. On one hand its great news because the official forecast keeps that turn in place. Dont just look at the spinning red icons. While thats the most important the whole forecast. T, its not the cone surrounding it has to be taken into account. Thats why the coast of florida is on edge and hopefully more so than on edge, theyre preparing for the possibility. Right now its hopeful though. Ill see you with more on our forecast coming up in a bit. Dont forget, you can stay on top of all things Hurricane Dorian on kpix. Com and every forecast. As long as youve been okay with the heat for inland locations, its still 91 in concord. Meantime, its 69 in San Francisco. This is classic. Were feeling a much more noticeable warmup for inland locations. Heres where things get a little better tomorrow. These numbers like the 93 in concord or 91 in livermore are coming in about five degrees cooler than today was so its not going to be cool. But it will be a move in the right direction. Meantime, look, were going to get san jose back into the mid 80s. Well go to 89 in santa rosa. It will be 79 in oakland and low 80s for the south bay. Mountain view at 82. Fremont coming in at 81. The numbers go lower from here. Take a look for the trend for concord. Going to take the 97 we did today. Its going to be closer to the mid 90s tomorrow. And then we get you closer to average by wednesday and thursday. Lets do this trend across the rest of some of our representative spots. Watch how cooler it gets the warmer we get under the influence of the bay. San jose, back down to average by the middle of the week. Oakland, 75 would be average. No problem here. 79 today. Well be at 75 by the middle of the week. This is why i say for some of us its been an uncomfortably warm weekend but not for all of us. Oakland has been pretty nice. For San Francisco, not a lot of change to be seen there. I want to pick up that story on dorian. This is where i left off earlier in the newscast. This is not the whole story. You no doubt have heard dorian is going to keep going and the carolinas are really going to become the next concern once florida gets through this hopefully. Thats thursday where were looking at the possibility of a category 2 sitting right at the coast. Another thing with dorian. Its kind of an unusual forecast but this is showing you what the confidence level is that areas will be experiencing Hurricane Force winds. If youre in the red or purple, the confidence is high. If youre in the yellow to orange, right here along the coast of florida and the rest of the coast of florida, theres still about a 30 to 40 chance here we could experience Hurricane Force winds in those areas. Thats why weve got to watch this. Its the same way of looking at the cone i showed you earlier. Look how weird that path is. Why is the hurricane moving that way . Because theres a big center of High Pressure out here. Thats the steering mechanism. Thats about to move and get out of the way. That will open the door to then pull dorian back out into the atlantic so there are a lot of unseen things that go into the forecast. That was one little insight on forecasting the path.
