65 flims from 13 countries. As you mentioned, well be in five bay area cities. Well be at the run at the castro theater for ten days starting july 18th. And palo alto, marin, albany, and san rafel. I already said that. You can repeat. People can go to more than one place. Thats right. And if you love the flim, see it again at another venue. Were excited to be back in the venues. We have something really amazing thats new this year. We have a dinner open to the public that this year is at city hall. And this is great. Its the night after Opening Night. We meet on july 19th at city hall. Its a sit down, familyer the we welcome the international flim makers here victiming us from out of town to join us. They say a little bit about the flims and they have a celebration. Thats on the 19th and people can buy ticks on the website. Wonderful. And we should say, i know well get to this, but the Film Festival attracts so many people. July 19th is a friday evening and the sa bath begins on friday night. Thats right. And folks can make the weekend plans. Yes. And its open to all. Its a very festive evening and it will be different in city hall and we really encourage people to join us. Its a great way to get more personal and intimate with the guests and film makers showing us their works over the next 18 days. The public can come and intermingle with the people who made the films. Thats right. Its a Cocktail Party from 6 00 to 7 00 and then the dinner is to follow. And its really a wonderful event. And what are some of the other themes this year . Yeah. This year we have 12 big night films, which are special events and really high profile films. And were really excited the Opening Night is fiddler, a miracle of miracles. Its a really well done documentary about fiddler on the roof. And its really, really a special film. Its very focused on all of the issues that fiddler brings to the table. The feminism with the sisters who defy, you know, the traditional roles that are expected of them. Its about the transition from tradition to month determinety that modernity that people share. It highlights the countries that adopted fiddler as their own. We see productions in thailand and thooin and all over the world that people have really adopted this incredible musical. So its going to be a great night for all with the party afterwards at the contemporary jewish museum. Thats Opening Night. Well talk more about this as we continue the conversation, but fiddler on the roof, its a documentary in which the way the movie was adapted in different communities and the themes of assimilation the movie portrays. Thats right. And it had Sheldon Harnick in the film and Linmanuel Miranda and a section of jerome robins. You get the inside scoop about broadway show production and specifically, the history of fiddler emerging on the scene. Fantastic. And well leave this segment with a clip. Set up the clip for us. Yes. Were focusing on films that have themes, feminist themes, and were really looking at the role of equity and diversity in the Film Industry as a whole. We have this wonderful film about the pauleen and looking at film criticism and equity and inclues in criticism or lack thereof impacting the Film Industry as a whole. This is a clip of what she said, the art of pauleen. And for folks who dont know, pauleen is no longer living and a film critic published in the new yorker primarily. She had roots in the bay area. She was from a family of chicken farmers and got her start on berkeley public radio. Its the local spotlight film and a local story as well. Well follow the film with a panel of film critics. We hope everybody will join us. And we would love to show the clip. Wonderful. Here we go. The one review she wrote that ended up meaning something to me in a big way was for a band about crieders. She says it was as if a bunch of movie mad young french boys had taken a an American Crime novel and translated the poetry they read between the line. It was like that is my aesthetic. Right there. That is thats what i hope i can do. Sometimes back then, it was about getting in peoples face. The United States had in place both a travel and an immigration ban for People Living with hiv, blocking the Golden Gate Bridge was disruptive and brought a lot of attention to hiv. You know, our friends were dying. So we had nothing to lose. And that made us dangerous. We all wondering, i certainly wonder, where the community would be if we hadnt lost so many fantastic leaders and champions and artists to hiv. When you do your activism or whatever you stand up and you resist, you are healing. Welcome back. So lets continue to have conversations about what the themes are and look at some of the clips along the way. Sure. Well, i want to tell you about our closing night film, which is part of the side bar on Ethiopian Jews. We call it desperately seeking israel. The film is one of the three films that are part of this and its called the red sea diving. And this is a big budget film with stars like chris everiens, who played captain america. And michael kenth williams, from the wire, and sir kingsly, greg kinnear. They playth as that try to help the Ethiopian Jews escape from ethiopia to sudan and israel. Its fiction and takes place in the 80s. Its a fun, big budget film about the important issue. And the other two films, one is the passengers, a documentary, which is about the Ethiopian Jews currently trying to get to israel. And another narrative about a family in ethiopia. What clip are we seeing now . . A clip from one of the center piece films. We have a narrative and a documentary. The narrative is called tel aviv on fire. And we showed a film of his from a few years ago called man without a cell phone. He will be joining us. And this is a biting satire film takes place right after the si like the front, somebody posing as a screen writer who gets his advice from an israeli colonel. And its a mad satire, comedy. But gets to important issues also. Lets take a look. [ Foreign Language ]. Wonderful. Typically, the Film Festival has films in english, but lots and lots of other language. And these in hebrew with subtitles. Im wondering if before we take a break, how does somebody come to you with a film and how do you make choices . We talk about how people can be considered for the festival the following year. We have a submission process through without a box. And people submit films to us. And we seek out the great films around the world and we go to several festivals around the world, berlin, sun dance. This year, a record ten films from the sun dance festival. We go to toronto and tribeca and find the films and invite them. You curate the festival each year. Yes. And we follow a lot of filmmakers and their careers and know when theyre working on a film and try to see it. Were going to take a quick break and come back as we continue the conversation with the jewish Film Festival. Good morning and welcome back to mosaic. Were in the middle of a wonderful conversation to get the know the 39th annual Film Festival. Welcome back. Thanks. So we want to show folks a couple of clips in this segment. Lets talk pretty quickly. I know you do an expression award to a director every year. Yeah. Were really excited. This year, the freedom of expression award to judith, an amazing filmmaker in her own right. Shes a pea body Award Winning filmmaker. Weve exited her films at past festivals. Shell be back with her new film, survival by zip code, about the chicago heat wave of the and how Climate Change disproportionately affects people of color and minorities. And shes an amazing feminist and started chicken and egg pictures, which has funded women filmmakers for millions of dollars of production. Shell be talking both about the work behind the camera and behind the scenes in the industry. And then continuing on the feminism theme, we have a great next wave spotlight film for the young adult populations. People under 35 can buy a pass for 45 and get in the films except for the big nights. The next wave spotlight is a very funny comedy, fiction film, that pokes fun a little bit at the me too movement. Its about a young ajunct professor played by justin long who make an inappropriate comment during a lecture and a student is triggered and a rious, but, you know, kind of critical look at me too and the conversations about harassment unfold. And it stars Fran Drescher as well. Well show a clip from the next wave spotlight now. Lets take a look. Oh, my god. Thats her. Thats the student. Stop looking. Everyone please stop looking. Jackie, jackie, turn around, please. Just pretend wheres my friend . Jackie. Thats her. Which one . Theyre doing it. Okay. Josh, listen to me, tnd apologi. Okay . Just listen to her. Validate her feelings. Okay . They could need that. Can you pay the bill, please . Wonderful. And what are some of the other things that you have themes before we look at the next clip . We have another film in that next wave group of films is a film that were combining with a feast, we call it film and feast. This is a film called abe and it stars noah from stranger things. They plays a young boy thatntisi and his father is palestinian. He just wants to cook. He wants to be called abe. And were combining with the feast at. Zetune. In the east bay, yes. Lets take a look at abe. Food. Some kids at school like computers, cars, selfies, toys. I enjoy simple, ordinary things in life, like food. You are a jew from your mother. He is a muslim because of his father. Im sorry, is atheism . My name is abraham. Some call me abraham. I prefer abe. Interesting. The clip is quitetive aut differeuick bre and come bk with more from the jewish Film Festival. Good morning. Welcome back do mosaic. Were continuing the conversation about the jewish Film Festival. Welcome back. What about the east bay Opening Night . Well, the east bay Opening Night film is called picture his life. This is directed by danny. It about a underwater photographer named amos. All four of them will be here for if screening. And his goal is life is to photograph the polar bear under water and the polar bear is the most ferocious animal there is. Lets take a look. There is one subject that eludes me that is the polar bear underwater. Hes obsessed to create these things and show these things. These images allow him to tell his story. Hes one of theest am bass doors of the ocean and of message. He takes huge risks to bring those images which nobody else has been able to capture. If the wind is too turbulent and we cant do it, were not going to go there. Theyre big for one and they got no fear of humans. Hes a brave man. Wow. The diversity of the films is so vast and educational. Yeah. And this film we actually have a block party afterward. So if people come to the albany for the east bay opening theres a wonderful street fair and a lot of great food and drink afterwards. Theres so many other events attached to the festival. We have a lot of mus f y ha le performance. The first one is really unique. Its an animated feature film. And its literally the animation of the storyf the exodus. Its beautiful and really artistic and has a great sound track. So people should not miss that. And then for another music film, we have a live musical performance along with mambo nicks. They were the jews who went crazy over mombo from florida and the cat skills and to havana. E nam mored with the dancing and we have a live musical performance with Sasha Jacobson and club havana1950. Lets take a look at the clip. Its really fun. Please.
