He was at one time the human rights director. He was the head of purchasing in my administration. He was the head of public works in my administration. He became the cao of the city and participated in the becoming of the mayor. When mr. Newsom moved on to become the Lieutenant Governor. Reporter mayor willy brown, of course, had a lot to do with the installation of mayor ed lee as he was a major force, backing him for the post of interim mayor in 2011 and elected twice since then. Mayor willy brown says he is in shock. Many of the folks inside this hospital this morning, as you can imagine, have been here all night and also in shock. There are many tears here at his bedside in the last few hours. I spoke more with mayor willy brown about the legacy of ed lee, and by the way, he says he is arguably the most qualified person ever to become the San Francisco mayor. Ed lee has really been tested in every category. I wall when i introduced him as the new i recall when i introduced him as the new mayor, i riled everybody that he had literally been the best qualified person ever to hold the job, unlike all the rest of us. Reporter the board of supervisors is now elevated under the circumstances to the position of acting mayor. Willy brown also familiar with her career. Take a listen. London breed. We are going to hear we spoke with him a short while ago. Forgive us for the technical difficulties. She has been involved in San Francisco politics quite a long time and she is a very tough customer in terms of politics, but also the mayor said, mayor willy brown said, she has a very warm heart. These issues still developing as we are still learning more about the passing of mayor ed lee, dead at 65 here at zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. We will toss it back to you now in the studio. Thank you, joe. Here to talk more about the career of ed lee, he was the 43rd mayor of San Francisco. Yes. And anne makovec, willy brown had a personal relationship with him and also respected him as a politician, as well. Absolutely. He was sort of the nonpolitician politician. He has more than 30 years at San Francisco city hall, and much of it was done behind thesteins. He did a scenes. He did a lot of work with the City Public Works Department before he became mayor but most notably he will go down as the first asianamerican mayor of San Francisco. He was appointed mayor first in january of 2011. He had been the administrator since 2005 and before that the director of public works. When he was appointed the mayor, he was taking over for former mayor gavin newsom who resigned to become the lute governor of california you may remember. First he indicated he may not run to keep his post as mayor, but be a interim mayor for that year. Then a Campaign Began themed run, etc. J. Run. Then he decided to run for the post. Run, ed. Run. So, he easily won reelection that year, virtually unopposed. He has been a very popular mayor of the city of San Francisco. If you cross mayor ed lees past i would think you would agree it with us difficult to dislike him. A very warm figure at city hall. Did a lot behind the scenes, in addition to taking a lot of public stances on important issues, such as most recently the sanctuary city debate which became huge in the National Spotlight with the killing of kate steinle, and also heavily involved in trying to solve the homeless problem in San Francisco only seeming to be getting worse, be you was really trying to make a dent in it, specifically for chronically Homeless Veterans. That was one of his goals to be able to provide housing for those folks. Another big goal was the vision zero for the city, a public works guy at heart, interested in the transportation and safety of pedestrians and bicyclists in the city, that vision to eliminate traffic deaths is something that those still reigning at San Francisco city hall will be taking over. I believe we found from now acting mayor of San Francisco, london breed, a few hours ago she was at the San Francisco General Hospital and announced mayor ed lees death. She was awoken very late last night with this horrible news, traveled over there to join her fellow could letters in San Francisco city hall to make this announcement at the hospital. The 43rd mayor of San Francisco, ed was 65 years old. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife anita, his two daughters, brianna and tania and his entire family. So, london breed now the acting mayor of San Francisco. She was the period of the board of supervisors. She has been reelected twice, a native of San Francisco. We will be hearing more from her later on this morning. Of evacuations she is very popular, as well in city hall and around the city as a whole, and likely will be working closely with this transition. Yes. 11 hours ago only mayor ed lee tweeted. He was constantly fighting for Affordable Housing in the city. Yes. So many huge challenges he was facing. He was the mayor of this city since 2011. Think about how many changes have gone on. The tech boom has continued. He has really been watching over the changing of the guard and changing in the culture of the city from old San Francisco to new San Francisco and heavily involved with the chineseamerican community. He made a lot of in roads, sort of reaching out and bridging the gap between San Franciscos china town and the rest of the city. He will be really sorely missed, that is for sure. We will talk more about his legacy in the next few hour, as well. Anne, thank you. And wind and fire caused dozens of evacuations in a two story house under construction in the 680 block of snake road. We have more live at the scene with Jessica Flores. Reporter michelle, the fire broke out around 11 30 p. M. Last night. Now more than five hours later oakland firefighters are still on the scene trying to put out hot spots and get out all the embers. What they are working on right now at the moment is the retaining wall under the snake road. It was on fire. They looked like they got most of it out. They threw foam on it and have been monitoring the area for hot spots. As you mentioned, five homes impacted, two under construction. It appears the fire started at a home under construction and then the high winds last night basically took those ember, carried them to multiple homes, five total, had some type of damage, two totally destroyed. The good news here, no one was injured. Firefighters and Police Officers evacuated roads above and below snake road. We spoke to the fire chief who says he talked to neighbors before the fire. I shared information with citizens here at the Montclair Elementary School evacuated. Some of them reported hearing large explosions right around the time the homes caught fire. Reporter now a total of 71 firefighters on the scene here battling this blaze at the height of it. 23 units here. Right now we can see ourselves three or four fire trucks. So, it has died down a bit as they controlled the fires, so the house initially burning seems to be controlled. Right now the main focus is on the hot spots, getting out the embers, because it is still quite windy out here. They want to make sure the embers dont fly on to anymore homes here in the Oakland Hills montclair neighborhood, just about a mile from the devastating fire in 1991. The main priority is getting it under control as soon as possible and not leaving this area until the sun comes up so they can make sure to monitor it and make sure all the hot spots are, indeed, put out. Reporting live in oakland, i am Jessica Flores, kpix 5 news. People posted photos of the fire on social media. This twitter user posted a shot of the orange glow in the hills. You can see the smoke building up in the area. And here is another photo shared much closer to the scene. This person appeared to be about a block away from the fire. Lets get a look at the conditions this morning . A lot of the members were flying across the road the embers were flying across the roadways there. But fortunately it is a lot calmer right now. Across the city of San Francisco, nice Clear Conditions for your Tuesday Morning. A chilly start to the day, as well. Not to worry, though. Later on this afternoon another nice day. A spare the air alert. If you are tempted to turn on your fireplaces because it is cool this morning, please do not do so. Temperatures in the 30s to 50s. Quite a wide range. Santa rosa now 30 degrees, just bumped up 1 degrees. Below freezing. San francisco is at 50 degrees right now. Livermore dropped off a degree at 33. Here is what is happening across the north bay where there are calm winds right now. Eastnortheast winds in sonoma at 3 Miles Per Hour. A west wind in santa rosa right now at 3 Miles Per Hour. So it is affecting visibility because there is no cool air to push the wind out. That is a look at what we are dealing with today. Again, another spare the air alert in effect. Lets check in now with jaclyn. We have a tropic alert in effect for drivers along northbound 680 through pleasant hills. This accident right at 242. You are taking a live look the the flairs are up and the emergency crews have shut down the two right lanes on the corrector ramp. Be prepared for a bit of a sluggish ride if this is out there by the time you get out to the roads. Right now traffic is still able to get through in that far left lane. We are really not seeing a major delay at this point. But just a heads up if you are heading through that area, you may encounter some slowdowns. We are also tracking a new crash, westbound 580. Reported looking to be closer to north flynn road, so the usual slowdowns plus some more. We will track the travel times coming up. Kenny . Jaclyn, thank you. San francisco is in mourning after the sudden death of mayor ed lee. More reaction straight ahead. In shock after the death of mayor lee di if you are just joining us this morning, the city of San Francisco is . Shock after the death of mayor ed lee this morning. Mayor lee died just after 1 00 at the zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, surrounded by friends and family and colleagues. He is survived by his wife anita, his two daughters, brianna and tania. The boards of supervisors president london breed becomes acting mayor effective immediately. Joining us on the phone with his thoughts on mayor ed lees passing is the kpix 5 news Political Insider phil matier. Certainly it was a stunner. Mayor ed lee was shopping at the neighborhood safeway when he suffered a massive heart attack and taken to San Francisco general and passed in the Early Morning hours. He was there, the family was alerted and the fire chief, police chief and the board of supervisors and london breed, the president of the board of supervisors now assumes the role of acting mayor. That is a role that automatically goes to the president of the board of supervisors, as it did to Dianne Feinstein in the wake of the harvey milk and george hamas coney assassinations back in the 70s, so she takes over right now. When gavin newsom was elected Lieutenant Governor we are looking around for someone to fill his shoe, at least temporarily until there could be an election and a number of people including former mayor willy brown started working and lobbying for ed lee to take the role as an interim, in part because he was not a politician, because he was seen as somebody that could sort of deal equally and not upset the up coming election and all the people contending for it. He got in and to the chagrin of some of the happiest of others turned around and ran for mayor after saying basically it would be an interim job, and won. He has overseen one of the biggest transformations San Francisco has had, largely from a blue collar and financial city that was known for its arts into a tech hub. He is the mayor that for better or worse oversaw the incredible skyline transformation that includes the sowers and high rises in downtown San Francisco and bringing the warriors to town and also overseeing the transportation and increasing traffic and change of identity of the city issues. And talking more about his work. Obviously we will be talking about his legacy in the coming days, one of them the Public Housing issue. Even before he got into politics as a civil rights attorney he frequently represented low income tenants, something that was really close to his heart. Yes. It was something he struggled with as mayor trying to balance the tremendous amount of outside investment coming into the city and some say pushing up rent and forcing people out. Like many mayors he grappled with growing homelessness and while he was seen as a friend, one of the best friends that tech could have in the city, he helped oversee various tax breaks that brought in new firms and new money. As you said, he always had a liberal progressive civil rights background to him. He had rocky problems with the police department. There were texting scandal, allegations of racism, several controversial shootings that led to the resignation of police chief greg sur. Problems and challenges in the Fire Department with ambulance response times and union troubles, but mayor ed lee throughout it all never seemed to take it personally. He never seemed to take umbridge with things. He was a very, v. Easy going guy, pretty much the guy next door that wound up being mayor and stayed pretty much the guy next door throughout his term. In 2011 mayor ed lee made history becoming the first asianamerican mayor in San Francisco. The city of San Francisco one third roughly of asianamerican decent. What will be his legacy for the is i of San Francisco . I think you summed it up. He is the first, he was was part of the change not just mayor ed lee, but a number of city officials, the treasure. Reporter and members of the board of supervisors and the emerging aging population and force there. It will be interesting to see if anyone is up to the task of sick seeding him in the community. He succeeding him in the community. He was popular across the board. He was popular with the backside of San Francisco that doesnt have cable cars, the backside, conservative part of the city. He was popular there, as well. I am not sure anybody else right now can command that crossover vote and support the mayor had and allow him to recover up against a lot of the challenges he faced. A lot of ed lees time as mayor was boiled down to the fact he was a very nice guy. That is a very strange phenomenon in american politics these days. You never got the feeling when you were dealing with ed lee it was about ed lee. I mean that genuinely. You never got the feeling it was about him. It was about whatever you were talking about. While you may not agree with where he was going or what he was doing, it was difficult to hold hard feelings for it because he was not a vindictive guy or a guy out for his own. We talked to anne makovec earlier. She said the same thing. He is a person you cant not like, very personable person. Phil matier, thank you so much for joining us on the phone. We know you often talked to him and covered a lot of the policies he tried to push in the city. Thank you so much. We will be right back. Good morning. Traffic starting to crawl along 238 due to an accident we are tracking closer to 80. A Traffic Alert remains in effect for drivers heading through pleasant hill. We will have all the detail, back ups and travel times coming up. And if you are just now joining us for the first time, San Franciscos mayor ed lee has passed away at the age of 65. We are live at city hall this morning. Things will be very different for Staff Members coming to work today. Reporter and we are here in oakland as firefighters continue to monitor a fire in the Oakland Hills. They are putting out hot spots at the hour. We will have the latest coming up. If you look at city hall right now things appear to be normal but it will be very different and emotional for Staff Members coming to city hall for work a little later on this morning. San Francisco Mayor ed lee, passed away, only 65 years old, suddenly at 1 00 at zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Before that a source tells us lee was shopping at a Grocery Store before being taken to the hospital. Lee was the citys first Asian American mayor. He took out the title when he was elected to serve out Gavin Newsoms term. He was known for his stance on homelessness and sanction ware cities. London breed, the board of supervisors president read the Statement Released this morning. Take a listen. In accordance with the city charter aassume the role as mayor of the city and county of San Francisco effective immediately. Reporter and london breed is taking on that role. She was someone very close with the mayor. This is an emotional morning for here. We will have another News Conference at 10 00 right here at city hall. Live in San Francisco, Sandra Osborne, kpix 5 news. Sandra, thank you. Back in 2011 ed lee took over as acting mayor before winning two elections. For more on his run, here is anne makovec. He was sort after a reluctant politician, sort of thrown into it after being behind the scenes in San Francisco, spending 30 years at city hall, built a lot of bridges and made a lot of things happen, but he wasnt your typical glad handing politician. In fact, he did a lot of his work silently and was suddenly thrust into the mayorship in january of 2011. That is when he was appointed to the position. He had been the city administrator since 2005 and before that the director of public works. He often as mayor would refer back to his time as the head of the public works department. It was certainly close to his heart. A lot of the projects he had worked on during that time. When he was appointed mayor in 2011 he was taking over for former mayor gavin newsom who resigned to become Lieutenant Governor of california at that point. At first he indicated that he wasnt sure he would actually run to keep his post as mayor. He said he would not. That was a lot of the reason a lot of supervisors voted him into the interim position at that time but he ended up decided the run that november of 2011 after a huge ground Swell Community campaign called run ed, run j. He easily won election and re election again in 2015. He was virtually unopposed at that point. Extremely popular around the city of San Francisco. Recycling centers. He spoke in front of a local deli. And now london breed becomes acting mayor . Had Environmental Issues and trying to help out Small Businesses. Mayor ed lee loved the city of fran. Mayor ed lee is a very likable character i saw him most recently at the Ground Breaking for the big construction project on 2nd street in San Francisco he is always smiling and always had his share of cheesy jokes. Always got a chuckle out of the crowd and himself, as well. Always a smile on his face a positive character very difficult not to like so a lot of shock and sadness throughout the bay area today with this news coming everybody. Certainly a trait you want as a politician, to be well liked by everyone, a tough job. Yes. Especially with the controversial issues he was dealing with in a city from old San Francisco to this new tech world, ushering in that era homelessness obviously a big problem, making a lot of inroads when it came to housing chronically Homeless Veterans and as well as the controversy over sanctuary city, vigorously defensing the citys policy of not cooperating with federal authorities when it comes to revealing the immigration status of immigrants. He really did have a tendency to dig in his heels in some of those areas but also remaining so likable. Looking to the future now, london breed becomes acting mayor what did we know about her . She did work very closely with mayor ed lee, popular with board of supervisors, the board of supervisors president she became acting mayor immediately upon mayor ed lees death. We heard from her earlier at the hospital she appeared stunned as we all have been we will hear from her a little later on the acting mayor, then the possibility of becoming officially interim mayor, then will there will eventually be an election to replace mayor ed lee, but at this point it is really hard to think that far in the future london breed has also been heavily engrained in City Politics for a number of years. On the board of supervisors, a native of San Francisco, grew up in the western edition i think she will be able to carry the torch. Yes we heard from london breed a short time ago and reaction now from various lawmakers, saying. San francisco needed during such a transformational time. This morning San Francisco supervisor katy tang posted this photo of lee at a recent race. Tang wrote quote holding onto the happy memories, mr. Mayor. Sending all my love to his beloved anita and daughters. And here is a photo posted of lee at a recent race and saying. Fire overnight prompted dozens of evacuations in the Oakland Hills.
