Net neutrality supporters are going to hold protests at Verizon Stores today. They are showing their opposition to the fccs plans to roll back Net Neutrality regulations. Kpix 5s jackie ward live in the newsroom with details. Reporter those against Net Neutrality say they are trying to prevent major internet providers from censoring content, slowing down or speeding up specific websites and potentially undermining freedom of speech. It was enacted by president obama two years ago mandating that all traffic on the internet should be treated the same. So if Net Neutrality goes away, Companies Like comcast could choose to prioritize their content over their competitors. The legal director for the Electronics Frontier foundation says rolling back Net Neutrality would generate massive profits for the broadband companies. For larger Companies Like google and netflix, they can afford to pay these extra fees. They can afford to pay to get into the fast lane. But smaller startups, small companies, nonprofits, libraries, governments, they cant afford this reporter a couple weeks ago the fcc chairman released his plans to get rid of it. He said under my proposal the government would stop micro managing the internet, instead the fcc would simply require Internet Service providers to be transparent about their practices. The fcc is expected to vote on Net Neutrality on december 14th. Now, if you would like to voice your opinion on this issue, a rally will be held at the Verizon Store in walnut creek at 5 00 tonight and at the Verizon Store in palo alto at 4 30. In the newsroom, jackie ward, kpix 5. So the theory behind the changes is we could trust the big providers to police themselves . But were hearing otherwise. Reporter the woman we just heard speaking has a theory of what will happen if Net Neutrality goes away. She thinks those companies will keep the speeds they have now but then create these socalled fast lanes for their own content and, of course, the consumer would have to pay for that fast lane access. Thank you. This years equifax data breach should put Holiday Shoppers on notice. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger joins us now to help you protect yourself digitally and in brick and Mortar Stores this shopping season. So all right, jill, lets start with Online Shopping tips. Reporter i know you all know this but we really want to emphasize, please, just conduct business with websites with a padlock symbol or secure sites. Confine your shopping to those sites that take a credit card or paypal, those will often give you better buyer protection in case theres a dispute. With mobile devices, you know the deal. Use the direct web access through your 4g connection, safer than an unsecured public wifi. If you keep the credit card information with your favorite retailers, its a friendly reminder, be sure that that password is strong 7 characters, combination of letters, numbers, symbols and upper case characters. If you dont want to remember that one, then just use one of those great password management apps, that will help you out. That definitely should. So, jill, what about instore tips and recordkeeping in general . Reporter i think a lot of people after these data breaches think maybe the best safest choice is cash at the checkout. But you know what . It really is not worth carrying around wads of dough. So for convenience, credit cards are the best option. Thats because they provide protection against stolen, damaged or lost items and perhaps more importantly your liability is minimized in the case of an identity theft. You compare that with a debit card where a thief could drain your bank account before you notice and then you have to deal with the bank to get money back. Of course, keep good records. You know, the product description, price, receipt, terms of the sale. Copies of email exchanges if you are buying stuff online maybe through ebay. And then best practices, review that credit card statement as soon as you receive it. Make sure there are no unauthorized charges. If there is a discrepancy, call your bank quickly report it. And if you think your information has been compromised, or that you have been a victim of identity theft, please go to ftc complaint assistance. Gov. Checking those credit card statements and then making that phone call not the favorite thing to do for a lot of people but you got to do it. You have to be vigilant. Absolutely. Thank you, Jill Schlesinger. It is 5 43. One Northern California woman is going all out to get in the spirit of the season with hundreds, yeah, hundreds of unique nativity scenes. Serve passengers, starting next year. But its the next phase of the the bart extension to san joses berryessa area is expected to serve passengers starting next year. But its the next phase of the Silicon Valley extension that could be more complicated. At issue a tunnel downtown underneath santa clara street. Kpix 5s Katie Nielsen joins us live from downtown to explain why construction could be disrupted in that area. Katie. Reporter yeah, kenny. Bart says it needs another three months to try to decide how to build those tunnels under santa clara street right here through the middle of downtown. Traditionally, there are two bores for the trains where tracks run side to side. But the vta proposes just one bore and stacking the tracks on top of each other. Supporters. Single tunnel plan say it would cause less disruption downtown during construction. The twin be easier less uphill battle trying to get into the federal funding pipeline. We are going to build the system once for the next century. And that means if we need to take more time to do it we should do it. Reporter barcelona is the only other city in the world using a single tunnel for the mass transit train. The extension from the berryessa station is budgeted to cost almost 5 billion. And bart Board Members are actually going to be talking about this issue, the single tunnel having double tunnel issue, at its Board Meeting this morning. Katie nielsen, kpix 5.
