A growing number of dna ancestry tests, are they accurate . Tonight we put two companies to the test. Kpix 5s julie watts found out dna accuracy is just the beginning of the potential concern. Might be fun to know. Reporter a few years ago she sent away her dna and like many she got back unexpected ancestry results. I called my mother, my father, we are irish. They said really . I said well, that is what it says. I am assuming it is right. Reporter how accurate is it . Well, i am not sure. Reporter we decided to find out. She has access to a great dna test sample. The quadruplets. Her kids. While their personalities may differ they share the same dna. So we used it to put two companies to the test. Ancestry dna and 23 and me. But first we changed their names and sent their samples in from different cities. Couple months later. The moment of truth. I was surprised when i came out 35 irish. Reporter not surprising, while the results did vary between the two sites, the dna results were nearly identical. Makes me feel more certain. Reporter but on 23 and me she was more british and irish than her brother. Twice as much as the identical twins. We brought the results to a dna expert. You would expect there to be differences. Reporter she notes while identical twins share nearly the same dna fraternal twins should differ. Over all dna heritage test are pretty accurate and will become more accurate as more people submit samples. But a warning before adding your sample. Be problemmed to find out something that might prepared to find out something that might not be comfortable to you. It can show nonpaternity. Reporter she was shocked to see the kids fake name listed as a dna match on her ancestry account even though we selected privacy settings. Ancestry revealed the kids are related and she is their mom. Based on the dna she submitted years ago. Once you give your dna, you gave it. The ancestry companies can keep your dna indefinitely. Information that may be subject to subpoena. Both ancestry and taza and 23 and me allow you to limit how much information you provide. In their case we used fake names. I caution people to look at the privateacy statements and figure out how privacy statements and figure out how much you want to give. Reporter on 23 and me you must opt into the dna match service but on ancestry we werent given the option to opt out. That is concerning to me. Reporter though now she is sure that information is accurate. We questioned ancestry about the dna match privacy concerns in august and as of this week the Company Changed their policy.
