Meteorologist has been watching the winds that are are going to change and how the conditions are so bad for the air quality too. Start with you, paul. Oh, im sorry, first, lets go to juliette. She is close by me, also in calistoga. Juliette, lets go to you first. Reporter allen, im just up the road from you. What caught our eye was this farm here, because you can see all the livestock. The pigs that are still here, but the family who owns this farm, they had to clear out. Let me show you why. Were going to pan up, and show you this hillside. Thats the st. Helena mountain. You can see all the smoke thats coming up. Just about 15 minutes ago, we saw flames shooting up. Thats the major concern. Thats why this entire area had to evacuate. We pan over, i want to show you what happened a couple days ago. This area has been hit by the tubs fire. You can see this family already had their property destroyed because of fire. To give you a lay of the land, well go to a map and show you, the calistoga fire actually surrounds this area, and then goes into santa rosa. The concern tonight is clearing out, and for a lot of people who live here, this is round 2. This quaint tourist town is now a ghost town. Its been a challenge. Reporter george hope, and his entire family, giving olders to clear out, and so they did. This is pretty much everything. Reporter hopes main priority, getting his 94year old father, and 93yearold aunt safely moved out, and out of the smoke. I know, how are you doing . Are you okay . Well, you know. Just hanging in there. Weve got all our belongings in my trunk. This is really scary. I think its really coming. Reporter for some, the hardest part about evacuating is leaving livestock behind. We cant take them. Theyre not like regular pets where you can be like, come on in the car with me. So theyre staying here. Hopefully, everything will be okay. They made through the first fire. They all huddled in the middle together, and they kind of just bunkered down. They were scared. Reporter for this calistoga family, this latest mandatory Evacuation Order is round two. The cops told us do whatever you need to do and get out. Reporter the tubs fire swept through their property sunday night, destroying antique cars, power lines, and some of their livestock. I thought it was gone. I thought it already passed over the hill. But now it came back around, because of the wind. Reporter were back out here live in calistoga, you can see the plume of smoke, thats what everyone is keeping a watchful eye on, and also the wind conditions. Right now, theyre calm. Of course, if theres any concern, were going to clear out as well. People are telling us, were okay to do our story, then well pack up and live in about an hour. This livestock is staying put. A lot of people who have grown up in calistoga have vivid memories of a fire in 1964, the hanley fire. Almost something similar to this. Were going to hear from them, and how vivid their memories are from back then as well. Juliette, thanks. We are in california, and there is always a fire danger here. Now to chief meteorologist paul deanno who has been tracking the winds, and of course, this unhealthy air. Yeah, the winds are going to do so many things in so many different places. Obviously, its going to cause some commotion around the fires themselves. But forget about the fire for a second. How about all that smoke, where is it going . Since the winds are coming from the west, and northwest this afternoon, all of that smoke has been pushed toward the bay area. You can see it as far south as san jose, and the santa clara valley. The air quality is unhealthy right now. Youre up to 100 miles away from the fires, but the smoke has found you. You can see very little. Visibility is reduced throughout the entire bay area, because of this poor air quality. I want to show you a number. Its 364. That was the air quality index in napa, just a short time ago. Anything over 200 parts per million is considered very unhealthy. Anything over 300 is considered hazardous. It was hazardous air for the majority of the afternoon in napa county. So where do we go from here . Obviously, were talking about the winds picking up, being more out of the north. This is your air quality forecast for tomorrow. Very unhealthy, to hazardous, again in the north bay. Unhealthy again in the rest of the bay area. And a red flag warning is in effect from now through tomorrow afternoon. The winds specifically in the north bay, where all of these fires were burning, will increase in speed up to 50 miles per hour, withsome of the gusts tonight. Theyll also turn to the the north. Its already beginning. Guys, it will continue all the way through the night, into tomorrow. Back to you. All right, paul. It is going to make it very, very dangerous. Appreciate the insight. Well be back to you. Here in calistoga, the big concern is the tubs fire. To the south, the fire that is burning there is the nuns fire. Thats the big concern. Its at 7600 acres. Only 2 containment. Its burning in sonoma valley, just north of glenn ellen. Thats where joe vasquez is for us tonight. Reporter allen, this is sylvia road. Were just north of the town of glenn ellen, which as you can see, has already been the victim of this fire once. Now as the wind begins to pick up, theres a major concern, well be in for round two. This is Bennett Valley, late this afternoon. As we drove through, we found hot spots along side the road. This is one of several hot spots weve seen, as the wind whips up, and moves toward the east. These fires are encroaching on Bennett Valley road. Parts of Bennett Valley have already been wiped out. Now authorities are worried, the fire will come back through. Sonoma county has expanded their evacuation. Ill push it out a little bit for safety reasons, but this is a big event. Were not going to be putting people back in houses until we can solve that problem. Reporter i mentioned the wind is picking up right now. There is major concern as for later this evening, and into the night, because those winds, we understand, will be more unpredictable. Thats why were starting to see these advisory evacuations. Not sure whats going to happen here, so authorities want to make sure they do what they can, to keep people out of harms way. For now, im joe vasquez, kpix 5. Thanks very much, joe. That word, unpredictable. Thats what has people on edge here. Im telling you, right now, were seeing no one downtown. The businesses are closed up. The road block is way back behind me. People have listened to this warning. They have taken the advice. They got out early. They packed up their belongings. Thats the good news. Now what theyre hoping for is a best Case Scenario that maybe the winds dont pick up. Maybe the embers dont come flying through town. Thats the latest from calistoga. Ill send it back to you, liz. Allen, that area is so beautiful. That downtown calistoga is so charming. Its so eerie to see it so empty like that. Reporter it is, and we talked to one of the local chefs who is hanging around. He said normally, this is one of the busier times of the year. There goes a city of napa police car, making patrols, and im telling you, people are on edge. Theyre very anxious. Youre right. Its an idyllic town, and theyd like to save it. Thank you, allen. Now to santa rosa, where another body has been uncovered. The body was found at the journeys end mobile home park, just east of 101. The park is now closed off. Meanwhile, hundreds of people in Sonoma County are still unaccounted for. Kpix 5 reporter, emily turner is in santa rosa, with the very latest information on that. Reporter liz, when i stood in this same spot yesterday, at this same time, reporting on missing people, that number was 183. In24 hours time, that number has more than doubled. You can just imagine how many people are scrambling, and searching for their loved ones. The faces of the missing are all over social media, and certainly on the minds of those looking for them. Janet leonard, and her son. For the last two days, ive just been pulling my hair, just trying to find her. Reporter his concern is one shared by many others in is a Sonoma County, for their own loved ones. The number of missing jumped overnight. Authorities estimate it to be around 380. Shes a tough, tough lady. But she also has a lot of medical conditions. And lupus being one of them, and a broken back. A broken hip. And shes only 61. She needs some serious attention. Reporter 71yearold daniel suford is also missing tonight. 40yearold mike grabo was last heard from his home off Mark West Springs road. Jan and dan oconnell also live in that area. This is what that area looks like now. A team of 30 deputies is in charge of tracking down those still unaccounted for. And fielding the publics calls about them. As fires continue to rage, with little to no containment, finding them is not an easy task. Some people are coming and utilizing services, and want to have food. Sometimes that happens, and were asking the people to check out, but they dont always. Were trying to keep a count nightly of who is here. Reporter of course, with 380 people listed as missing, this is just a small accounting of those who are unaccounted for. If you have someone you love, or are looking for someone, feel free to reach me, or email me on facebook. Were putting things together so we can broadcast these faces. So hopefully, you will be able to reach out and find the people youre looking for. The other part is, theyre also asking if you have in fact found the person you love, or the person that youre looking for, please call the Emergency Operations center and let them know, hey, we found this person, so they can take them off the list, and concentrate those resources elsewhere, with people who are in fact still missing. Reporting live, emily turner, kpix 5. We take a look at the total devastation in the north bay. Homes and businesses burnt to the ground. Plus, the town of geyserville. This is one of the neighborhoods devastated when the flames raced through monday. You see smoke still rising off in the distance as things continue to smoulder. This is now sealed off from the public. Now a live look at the leading edge of the atlas fire. This active fire zone is just south of lake berryessa. Flames, as you can see there, heading up the hillside. This afternoon, the death toll now stands at 21. Cal fire says flames have scorched over 100,000 acres. The atlas fire, more than 42,000 acres alone, and only about 3 contained tonight. The heartrick fire is 9500 acres, and the nuns fire covers 7600 acres. Both just 2 contained. And to the west of those, the tubbs fire has spread across 28,000 acres, with zero containment. Lets send it back out live to our colleague, allen martin, who is in calistoga, a city that has now almost completed a total evacuation. Orit evacuated ken. Theres very few people here. Youre seeing police cars, and calistoga fire department. All of these are emergency vehicles pretty much behind me. Those are the only people who are left in town. The anxiety pretty high. The mandatory evacuation went between 2 and 3 this afternoon. Pretty much everybody has heeded that warning, and they have gotten out. Im told that in terms of total evacuations, about 25,000 people are out of their homes in the multicounty area. But i want to bring in my colleague, wilson walker. Wilson, you were one of the first reporters up here when the fire broke out on sunday night, so youve been here three days. Today, you went through Sonoma County. This was pretty much a trip through Sonoma County southbound, down 12 down to sonoma. It was strange. This was a space id gone through on monday. And im going back through the same area in the places that hadnt burned on monday, for a lot of folks were on fire today. It was like the fire came back to haunt them again. You saw, maybe not the kind of apocalyptic day or night, but this was people on the move, and trying to get out of the way of this fire. I mean yesterday the fire was over there, and it was just picking up a lot of brush, but it seemed contained. Then last night, it just seamed to jump over here. Reporter from the moment the sun rose, perfectly clear that the catastrophe would not end today. The winds are picking up for sure. Reporter flames marched across the landscape. Creeping across homes, with firefighters the only thing standing in the way of a total loss. Theres very limited resources. A message actually for joanne chief page, and the mayor. This is San Francisco strong in Bennett Valley, with the valley of the moon. With our teams up here saving a family compound of about 900 acres, and these guys are rock stars. Thanks. Reporter so the now familiar scenes of chaos unfolded again. We just got permission to come up here and get the cat. Reporter fleeing homeowners raced to gather pets, boxes of memories, and the occasional piece of human history. This is the actual voyeur director. Reporter fire crews from across the state scrambled to decipher local maps, trying to get trucks and backhoes to just the right spot, as residents tried to make sense of a situation that changed by the hour. The only thing they said, the fire will be here within three hours. Reporter getting out meant navigating a maze of blocked roads, and anyone who was left could probably be found packing up a car, or standing on a roof. Most of the people left. Sonoma is like a ghost town. Reporter so this was another day of wine country on fire. Still, no end in sight. Been up here forever. Yes, its 1961. Ever seen anything like it . Never, never. Theres been fires that just blow through. This has been going on for three days with no resolution. Were just on edge right now. Its awful. Absolutely awful. Reporter peoples nerves fraying at the edges. Youve the got to wonder where is the breaking point . Is there a breaking point . We talked monday an how well people held it together during the hell storm of sunday night. People kept their cool and didnt lose composure. The same thing today. I think you can start to see the needle moving a little bit on physical, and emotional exhaustion. People starting to just wear down, and you wonder how long this can go on before people start to wear down. Nothing of the firefighters who are out there. Reporter exactly, theyre exhausted. Lets hope theres not much more to take. Fires also threatening the wine country town of geyserville. They call it the pocket fire. Its growing in the hills above town. It has triggered mandatory evacuations for people on the outskirts. Kpix 5s don ford spent the afternoon in geyserville. Reporter in geyserville, the wind is howling. Helicopters fly overhead. And folks are nervous. This fires been going for three days. Reporter the pocket fire flames are burning across the hills on the other side of the valley. Geyserville is under an evacuation notice. Not mandatory yet, but here down in the town of geyserville, and also up into cloverdale, and an area called pallimino lakes. This is not a time to be a hero. Were good to go. Down the road at the winery, geyserville fire captain, joe stewart just returned from the fire lines. He is briefing ranchers and their families about the realities of the situation. We want one fire engine at each house, but thats not going to happen. Working the flanks hard, with air resources, and dozers. But its real windy up there. Reporter here in calistoga, were just watching the emergency crews go through town, and make sure indeed, that everyone is gone. Allen martin, reporting live from calistoga. Well be right back. C1 as bad as it is, the air quality has the potential, at least early tomorrow to be worse, because the winds will pick up even more smoke, and send it to the bay area. This is the view from the south. Visibility minimal. This is a view looking north, toward the golden gate. Mind you, it is completely sunny outside. That is all smoke blanketing marin county currently. No view from mount diablo today. That wind will be a problem for the fires, but also a problem for our air quality tomorrow. Unhealthy air quality everywhere. Very unhealthy to hazardous air quality in the north bay. As to to why this is happening, why were seeing a wind direction change, and also an increase in speed, that low pressure area to our north drove a dry cold front through. And on the western side of that front, we will see an increase in winds, and it will be a north weekend. Believe it or not, its not the last one we will see. Offshore winds are possible again this weekend. So firefighters may be dealing with the situation bad to worse tomorrow. But also again on saturday. The winds will stay elevated, so about noon tomorrow, and the air quality could be even worse tomorrow morning. Quickly, your sevenday forecast, those arent clouds. Its just going to be smoky through the weekend. We wont get good air quality back until early next week at the earliest. Thats your forecast, well be right back.
