Reporter its a packed city council and the police chief is talking to the mayor about using pepper spray during violent protests. The next hour or so were expected to hear what the city council has to say. Berkeley police already carry pepper spray, but theyre banned from using the spray for crowd control. The city voted in the ban in 1997, but protests now are very different. Anarchists often turn peaceful protests into violent clashes. This afternoon the police chief was asking the city council to overturn the 20yearold ban allowing his officers to deploy pepper spray on violent protesters. As it stands now, our officers do not have the tools they need to address the threat. The major tools have been brought over this years demonstration. He said tear gas, for example, hurts everyone in the crowd, but the police can use pepper spray to target the violent individuals. S. 1 for a first look at irmas destruction in the florida keys. Officials allowed upper keys residents back today but are keeping people out of the lower keys while they make emergency inspections and repairs.
