Reporter its a packed city council and the police chief is talking to the mayor about using pepper spray during violent protests. The next hour or so were expected to hear what the city council has to say. Berkeley police already carry pepper spray, but theyre banned from using the spray for crowd control. The city voted in the ban in 1997, but protests now are very different. Anarchists often turn peaceful protests into violent clashes. This afternoon the police chief was asking the city council to overturn the 20yearold ban allowing his officers to deploy pepper spray on violent protesters. As it stands now, our officers do not have the tools they need to address the threat. The major tools have been brought over this years demonstration. He said tear gas, for example, hurts everyone in the crowd, but the police can use pepper spray to target the violent individuals. Seven fires broke out last night just after the thunderstorms rolled through and three are still burning. Here in jacksonville we saw historic flooding yesterday. Today we watched as a lot of that floodwater has been receding. Here in this neighborhood they saw 3 to 4 feet of floodwaters. Now theyre down to inches. From here its about cleaning up trying to get back to normal, not just here in jacksonville, but throughout the entire state. A long line of evacuees inched south on u. S. 1 for a first look at irmas destruction in the florida keys. Officials allowed upper keys residents back today but are keeping people out of the lower keys while they make emergency inspections and repairs. In marathon residents who stayed behind are checking on neighbors. A lot of them left town. The ones that are here are still alive. Most of the boats, i got 1 friend that lost his boat. The white house announced today that the president and the first lady will visit florida this thursday to get a firsthand look and assess the damage. The locations of that visit and logistics are still being worked out. At the height of this thing thousands of people sought shelter by going to shelters. There are more than 300 shelters operating serving more than 90,000 people and this is more than just shelter. Theyre providing other services, food, really taking care of people in a time of need.
