Live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. Tonight, three chp officers arrested in a crazy murder plot involving a prominent defense attorney. Get right to kpix5s betty yu. Shes in the news room tonight. Reporter liz, today the chp said it is appalled to know that chp officers former and current played any role in this murder. Two are still behind bars tonight. The other has bailed out. This has been a long three year investigation. Reporter today, deputies searched the home of frank larson. Nine total arrests in the three yearold murder of 26yearold cory kaufman. One of the men arrested in connection to the killing, officer walter wells. No one answered at him home today. To learn that you have employees in an organization like ours who have some involvement or any knowledge of a murder is devastating. Reporter prominent defense attorney frank carson has also been arrested for corys murder. A newly released affidavit said cory had planned to steal pipes from his house in 2012 but he vanished. Metal on the property had long been a target of thieves. Witnesses say frank had previously made threats that if he caught the thieves, their bodies would never be found. Hunters found corys body a year later near yosemite. Kaufman was supporting his family by scrapping. An activity related to metal theft as a means to make money. Reporter deputies and the department of justice were seen searching carsons backyard. Two other officers were arrested for obstruction and conspiracy. One of those officers lived next door to the victim. Prosecutors right now are not commenting on any of the suspects individual roles in the crime. In the news room, betty yu, kpix5. A tragic accident at Yosemite National park, two young campers killed when a massive tree limb crashed onto their tent. This happened about 5 00 a. M. At the Upper Pines Campground near curry village. Video from the camp site shows a limb where it sheered off. It makes me feel sad for the family and sad for the situation. Because, it is just out of their control. There is nothing they can do about it. Rangers tape off the area around that tree and tonight, the campground is still open. Well, a popular campground in another part of the park is shut down, however, tonight, it is because of the plague. Two squirrels died from it. The area around Tuolumne Meadows is being treated with insecticide. About a week ago, a child contracted the plague after visiting yosemite. That child is still recovering. New details about a rescue that went horribly wrong. A bay area deputy drowned while trying to save a friend. Kpix5s andria borba is in south lake tahoe. Reporter the accident happened in the middle of the afternoon. The deputy was not wearing a life vest though his girlfriend, a registered nurse tried to get him one. The bright blue waters while inviting are dangerous. We are hopefully going to make it through this. Reporter yesterday, a clear but windy afternoon, 30year old Carlos Frances was on vacation with family and his girlfriend when an afternoon in the sun went sideways. They were 100 yards off El Dorado Beach when he saw his sister fall off her kayak. The sisters friend tried to help her. But that friend got in trouble too. That is then the deputy swarted swimming toward the man, but soon he started struggling. His girlfriend was on her own paddle board and threw him a jacket, but the jacket started to fall short. She watched as he started to sink. It was too late. He had gone unconscious. We are all devastated. We lost one of our family members. He was well liked. Reporter friends say his work ethic didnt stop at the badge. He was also a football coach in Del Campo High School in San Francisco. He worked here and then had to go to work there. Not everybody is willing to do that and not accept a dime for it. Reporter in south lake tahoe, andria borba, kpix5. The victims brother is a former nfl player. He played for the Oakland Raiders in oakland 12 and 2013. Friends of a man shot by Oakland Police came out to protest his death. Witnesses say he was pointing a gun at officers and an autopsy backs that up but the protesters dont believe it. Reporter people close to the man shot wednesday have a lot of questions. They say no matter what led to the shooting wednesday, he did not deserve to die. She was too emotional to speak to night. Shamika hollis is grieving her boyfriend, nathaniel wilkes. They have heard conflicting stories. People that were there said that he was not armed. He was not confrontational and he was running but he was slowing down trying to surrender saying okay. Okay. Okay. With his hands up. So something is not matching up. Reporter tonight, protesters, neighbors, and family members came to the spot where the shooting happened with a series of demands. We want the chest cam video. We want to get a second autopsy. Reporter a partial autopsy report already exists. Oakland Police Lieutenant chris bolton tweeted part of it yesterday showing the bullets entered the front of the mans body. Witnesses told us wednesday that wilkes would not drop his gun and it seemed police had no choice but to shoot. They said drop the gun, drop the gun. He didnt want to drop the gun. So they hit him six or seven times. Reporter black lives matter activists admit he was not a saint. He may have been driving a car that was linked to a robbery. Police say he was attempting to carjack someone. You dont shoot him in the back. You chase him until you catch him. Reporter in oakland, christin ayers, kpix5. A close call in san rafael tonight. Firefighters saved an Office Building as a fast moving fire raced up a hillside. That fire started just before 5 00. You can see how dry it is out there. That fire ripping through the brown grass. Streets around the North Gate Mall were closed so that firefighters could surround the flames. It burned so close it set off the Sprinkler System in the garage. Damage to the building was limited to some smoke damage to the interior. And a broken water line. And Marin County Sheriffs Department says six juveniles were seen running from the area. At the time, that fire got started, that as for how it got going, still under investigation tonight. Bay Area School Board decided to bend the rules to give High School Graduates their diplomas. It all started when the state messed up. Reporter in an emergency meeting tonight, the San Francisco school board has decided to take a step and a very unusual one and it appears to fly right in the face of state law. They are issuing diplomas to graduating seniors though they didnt take the state mandated exit exam. They finished all requirements to garageuate except for the exam, but then the state stopped giving the exit exam. At the School Board Meeting tonight, they decided to go rogue and issue the diplomas to the seniors. Meanwhile, im told there are thousands of student ins the same situation statewide. The governor and the legislature have vowed to fix this problem and quickly. In San Francisco, im joe vasquez, kpix5. To Twin Brothers graduated tonight from the San Francisco police department. Rodney and Ronnie Freedman are part of the 244th academy. They spent what they described as 32 long grueling weeks in training. The twins grew up in the citys engleside district. They are honored to serve the city in which they were raised but they didnt decide to become Police Officers at the same time. It definitely wasnt my thing at that time. But eventually, it grew on me. And im glad i made that decision. You know, i had a lot of long nights with this guy just talking to him. Not only about law enforcement. But the topic came up and i gave some of my twin brotherly love and he followed. Rodney and ronnie begin their patrols next week, but they will be working out of different stations. He started off in Southern California before then veering dramatically off course. Reporter crystal cruz reports the plane likely flew for hours along the bay area coastline with no one controlling it. Reporter long time pilot troy johnson is missing friday night. Johnson was flying an experimental airplane similar to this one that crashed into the Pacific Ocean thursday night. He is a christian man and we know that he is at peace. And, it is just a difficult time and we ask that everyone would keep the family in their prayers during this difficult time. Reporter lindsay woods is johnsons brotherinlaw. He says during the flight, there was some unknown mechanical malfunction and the planes auto pilot continued on its course until the fuel supply was exhausted. He was described as an accomplished pilot. Troy knew at an early age he wanted to work in aviation. Reporter he stopped in palm dale but the plane veered off course. Military radar operators picked it up off the coast of point reyes. A rescue plane flew alongside and reported the plane was slumped over the controls. The crew watched the plane crash into the ocean 164 miles off the coast. They only found debris. There was no sign of johnson. At this point, there are no plan to resume the search. Heads up drivers, there are lane and ramp closures on the other hand the golden gate bridge. Vehicles will have to squeeze into one lane going in each direction. Those are closest to the median barriers. The on and off ramps to vista point are also closed tonight. Everything reopens early tomorrow morning.
