It began in april when surface temperatures hit more than half of one degree in average. It spiked in june to moderate and from june to now it spiked nearly 2 degrees celsius above average well into the strong category. Live at lands end, what el nino does is increases the odds of a wet winter. Nothing is a guarantee. We do not know for sure whether its going to pour this winter but past history says an el nino this strong will lead to a wetterthanaverage winter. Frankly thats wonderful news. We dont want the flooding but we need the rainfall. But guys, all were going to hear is godzilla. Thats the only word anybody is going to hear. Heres what i want you to remember. Strong el nino, wonderful news, will seriously help with the drought if we get that rainfall. We have gotten better at reading the signs of el nino better than in 97. Reporter thats a very good point and we floss that el nino is the number one factor when it comes to winter precipitation, know that, the number one leading indicator. We also know there are several other smaller ones and its our hope that those will also line up, that will also point toward a wetterthanaverage winter. One of those is the water temperature right off the coastline which is also running warmer than average. Will that bring in more rainfall or will that counteract el nino . But look how close it got. Firefighters did have this under control in about an hour. So if word on the cause. A woman is under arrest for the death of another woman. Reporter murders are rare here. Police have not released many details as investigators trying to piece together what happened this afternoon. What they have said is the suspect apparently called 911 to report the murder. The suspects was cooperative suspect was cooperative, detained and officially charged with the murder. Police havent released any names or said how the victim died. They shared with us a little of what they learned so far. When they arrived on scene, they made contact with an unarmed cooperative woman at the residence. She was detained. When they searched the residence they found one deceased adult female inside. Reporter now, as mentioned before, police have not yet released the name of either the victim or the suspect in this case. They would not answer questions about the relationship between the two but neighbors tell us that an elderly woman lived at that home and recently her adult daughter was living there, as well. A man with a gunshot wound was rushed to a hospital where he later died. Police are investigating whether the shooting was drug related. Many workers couldnt believe it. Completely shocked. I dont know. Im actually kind of devastated to hear that would happen so close to where i work. So far no arrests. This is the citys 19th homicide of the year. One lane of highway 101 still closed after a deadly rollover crash. The black suv was destroyed after it tumbled all the way over from the freeway. This happened just before 2 00 north of mckee road in san jose. Police tell us that a woman in the back seat was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car and died. Another passenger and the driver were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police in South Lake Tahoe want you to take a close look at this man. They say that he vanished while he was out paddle boarding on the lake. Officers found the paddle board and the paddle in Shallow Water near a deep dropoff but they also found the gopro camera that took these pictures. The second man appears in a couple of those photos taken at heavenly ski resort of. If you recognize either of those men, police want to hear from you. New information tonight on the death of the 8yearold santa cruz Girl Found Dead in her home. Officials say Maddy Middleton died from asphyxiation and stab wounds to the neck. We got a rare look inside the West County Detention Facility in richmond today. Contra costa county officials are seeking state funds to add a new inmate housing unit there. Tonight the death toll from a explosion at a china port is up to 50 and dozens more are missing. Lets talk about the promising news this el nino. We are looking out here at lands ends in the beautiful pacific ocean. El nino doesnt occur here. A lot of folks wonder what why does it change our weather . El nino is a change in the ocean temperature about 4,000 miles away off the coast south america. Despite the fact that its so far away it has a profound impact on our weather because that warmer water can alter the jet stream. And alter where the jet stream goes on the west coast of the u. S. Most often when theres a strong el nino, we typically see the jet stream become more active over california. Thats why historically, a strong el nino has led to wetterthanaverage conditions for california and man, do we need that after the past four years. We need some rainfall. That may be coming up this winter. Livermore 82. Santa rosa 81. San jose 78. It will be hot tomorrow. The low pressure area which has been sitting offshore feeding in that southwest wind. Thats going to leave. And as it leaves, Something Else has to move in. That Something Else is an area of High Pressure thats going to build in over the desert southwest. And when that happens, the onshore flow that chilly air coming from the pacific is gone. Its going to be gone for three days beginning tomorrow. The warming trend begins tomorrow. It will be warm to hot with the two hottest days being saturday and sunday. How warm tomorrow . Not crazy warm but certainly warmer than the past several days. Triple digits saturday and sunday. 80s near the bay. Even some 70s along the coastline especially on saturday. A little bit of onshore flow comes back on monday so about five to 10 degrees cooler more significant cooling tuesday and wednesday. Amazing view at lands end. Its called that for a reason. Its where the land ends. And its about 68 degrees with low cloud cover moving in. I cannot say enough. We dont want the flooding. But we desperately, desperately need a wetterthanaverage winter and what el nino does it does not guarantee things in august. It stacks the odds in our favor.
