Directing traffic . Im available after 7 00. Okay. Well put you outside. It is 4 30 now. A close call on the front lines of the rocky fire up north in lake county. It was growing so fast that cbs news crew had a hard time outrunning it. Cbs News Reporter carter evans and his photographer had to sit tight for two hours with a cal fire crew. At this point were in a safe zone. Theres no vegetation to burn around us, the best place for us to be is inside the car. But you can see the flames just about 100 yards away from us. Well, that fire has grown at 62,000 acres and its just 12 contained. 13,000 people in three counties are now under orders to evacuate after the fire jumped over highway 20. But now covers more than 96 square miles and thats about the size of oakland. And berkeley all put together. Cate cauguiran reports now from lake county. Reporter in just a few hours theres going fob a massive shift change for the ground crews here in the area that will officially start day seven of fighting the rocky fire. Since then thousands of families have been asked to evacuate homes but some arent leaving just yet. Just waiting and watching and seeing how close it comes. Reporter two neighbors going two different directions. Im just pretty confident. Reporter Janet Russell and her family hoping they can wait this one out. We have some horses there and we dont really want to pick up and move if we dont have to. Reporter while David Sherman left right after i interviewed him. Its not working. Reporter right now the fire isnt burning in their direction but as weve seen, a lot can change with a swift gust of wind. We saw fire consume about 20,000 acres in the span of about five hours at nighttime. So thats pretty incredible. And unprecedented with something that weve said earlier in the fire. Reporter during the daylight hours, we watched as air tankers and helicopters made drop after drop after drop. One of the refueling spots for the tankers that you see here over, the helicopters can refuel up to 500 gallons of water in less than 45 seconds. But by nightfall the fire grew thousands of more acres and janets family is getting a front row seat. When you the smoke rolls up and you stand here and you see the flames rolling up like a hurricane behind them, its get really nervous. Reporter she says theyre ready to go at a moments notice but david didnt want to wait for that moment to come. Its like if it burns it burns. Reporter hows that feel leaving . Its tough thinking you know i could come back homeless but once again as long as im okay life goes on and so yeah. A sheriffs deputy pulled a man to safety just moments before northbound train smashed into his car. Kpix 5s kiet do is at the site on merit avenue where the rescue happened. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Crews are out here in sunnyvale working through the night to get this thing repaired before the morning commute gets going here. What happened last night though looked like a scene right out of a hollywood action movie. But no, this was real life. All caught on a cell phone camera. Look closely and you can see a deputy pulling man out of his car. The man stumbles and falls to the ground and then seconds later. Boom. The on coming caltrain smashes into the car. And now here it is again. You can see how the man fell down. But the deputy still grabs him by the arm and drags him to safety. Now theres a second angle from the opposite side that shows the moment of the impact. The deputy who pulled the driver out is not wanting to talk on camera but a second deputy on scene who actually ran towards the train and tried to slow it down said he was just doing his job. Im just happy at the results. You know. Regardless that if he died thatd be the worst outcome of this situation. And you know, glad that we were here. Reporter now nobody was hurt and caltrain crews are still here working throughout the night to repair this crossing. The train itself was also damaged and delayed. And its passengers on board there were delayed by a couple of hours last night. It appears the driver may have been drinking. Live in sunnyvale, kiet do, kpix 5. Thank you very much.
