Live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. After 80 years, say good bye to doyle drive. The new presidio parkway is taking shape and the clock is ticking to get it done before mondays commute. Im brian hackney. Im juliette goodrich. Crews are racing tonight to complete construction of the new presidio parkway. Here is a live look at the construction going onto night. We have seen them bringing in bars and pouring concrete. The concrete is quick setting. If all goes as planned, it will be cured by tomorrow. They also need to finish paving the road and install a median. They are still on pace for an on the time opening ahead of the monday morning commute. But even when this big project is done, there will still be the need for more closures in the weeks ahead. After this threeday closure, there will still be a foemens of construction before we really get done on this main line. There will be nighttime closures. Nighttime work has to be done because we cannot complete the roadway. Lane striping also still need to be done before the new roadway can open. That is expected to start tomorrow. These little headaches are only temporary and when they are over, we will be left with something that would have been a few years ago. Kpix5s Wilson Walker spent the day with the man who imagined it all in one instance. There are few areas in the world as gorgeous as this spot. Reporter before the detours and the traffic, there was a moment of inspiration on the roof of the palace. There is a stunning view of the bridge, the bay, and so forth, that, when you are down on the ground, you didnt see at all because of doyle drive and parking lots and so forth. Reporter in that single moment, michael painter reimagined the northern face of San Francisco. So i thought, we should just totally get rid of the roadway and replace it with what might be called a parkway. Reporter a vision so different, that some people actually had trouble seeing it. I can remember somebody looking at the first model and they said, you havent finished the model. Reporter to make it happen, 3,000 feet of elevated doyle drive would have to go. Which they got rid of in 59 hours. Reporter in its place, we are getting a highway that is largely underground. When this is covered over with soil, you wont even know it is there. Reporter think back to a landscape divided and dominated by the old diaduct. Now we get a new park. Then there are the touches people might enjoy without noticing why. If you drive on the new viaduct or are looking north from the new parkland. This one is set back to get a better view of the water. Reporter even in a place so beloved, its a change that might take years for us to fully appreciate. A seamless run of user friendly land allowing you to walk from the Historic Buildings of the presidio down to the bay. You are leaving a tremendous mark on the city. Are you proud of that . It haze taken six years. The cost is nearing a billion dollars, i think. The bridge was built from scratch in four years and it is taking them six year to do this . If you were filing that grievance, you could find one other project in the bay that could be wetter. Going back to your opening line, he found his inspiration when he was on the roof of the presidio. A new twist in the case of a missing bay bay from the redding area. Her father Matthew Graham is on the run after allegedly stealing a gun and cash. He reported his daughter missing on july 2 claiming he last saw her when he put her to bed the night before. But investigators say graham gave them inconsistent statements. He was supposed to meet with his probation officer today. He stole money and a pistol from his mothers house in redding and took off. And the search is off for an elderly woman who walked away from her apartment. This is 74yearold valentina leaving her room. She only speaks russian and has dementia. She is likely still wearing the outfit she had on in this surveillance video. In San Francisco, a venomous snake has gone missing from the zoo. So why are they in the more worried about it . The snake is small. Only an inch wide and 12 to 14 inches long. Zoo Officials Say there is nothing to worry about. This snake is barely venomous. It is bike a bee sting. So this snake went off and it was picked off, we have about 100 species of plants and animals in here. Many of them are snake eating birds. Reporter most visitors i talked to dont seem too worried. One bay area city is moving closer to banning city outdoors on city property. San carlos is prohibiting smoking in its parks an other facilities. There would be some exceptions like designated outdoor smoking areas. The City Council Area will consider the proposal monday night. A large crowd gathered in san jose today to let the city know that they dont want trains loaded with potentially explosive crude oil rolling through their neighborhoods. There are plans to bring crude oil trends from the Central Coast through san jose. But upon the claim, they are dangerous citing recent explosions like the one in quebec canada.
