Block off berkeleys busy avenue at the intersection of channing way and fulton street. That intersection just recently reopened. Abc 7 News Reporter joins us live from the scene with the very latest. Carlos . Reporter thats right. Officials just reopened that intersection about an hour ago, but this is a crosswalk where the 70yearold woman was crossing when she was struck by a vehicle coming westbound here on channing way. The driver of that vehicle driving a city car. He or she was a city worker. When they failed to see the woman, hitting her, eventually killing her. But we do want to show you some video from the scene here. The accident happened just before 1 30 this afternoon. A city of berkeley employee was driving the city car, came to a complete stop at the intersection. The driver did not see the woman who was at the crosswalk and hit her. She was pronounced dead here on scene shortly after that. Witnesses say that the driver was not speeding, was going about 15 miles an hour when the accident took place. The driver is not facing any charges but officials think that there was some type of city work happening on the street that might have affected the drivers vision. There was city of berkeley Maintenance Work being done in the intersection. And there was equipment in the middle of the intersection. That may have contributed to some type of visual obstruction for the driver. Reporter were told the driver is cooperating with investigators. Now it does not appear drugs or alcohol played a factor in this crash. And we dont know much about the driver or the victim of this accident, other than that she was 70 years old and lived here in berkeley. Now, a city spokesperson tells me that their thoughts are with the womans family this evening. Reporting live in berkeley. Carlos, thank you. New at 6 00, police need your help to find this man. Hes suspected of trying to Sexual Assault a woman along the iron horse trail in walnut creek. East Bay Regional Park Police say a woman a man approached her from behind and tried to grab her last night near newell after knew. That man began running away from the adult victim. Last seen running northbound on broadway. Today, rescue workers found the body of a man missing since this weeks devastating Santa Barbara mudslides. Im saddened to report today another victim was located, bringing the total number of fatal casualties from this tragic incident to 18. The 87yearold was found in his living room. Authorities say the number of missing people is now search. Search and rescue Officials Say its increasingly likely that rescue dries will be finding victims instead of survivors. The mudslide swept through montecito Tuesday Morning, catching people entirely off guard. Rescuers are working hard to find any more survivors, but time is running out. Annabelle from our sister station in los angeles explains why some locations are being double checked. Reporter more than 1,000 firefighters on the ground in montecito, shoveling dirt, digging through the mud and debris. With six people still missing, no stone left unturned. Police are looking for 3yearold heeu trung nguyen, who is considered armed and dangerous. Believe he shot and killed anthony bubbles torrez in the tenderloin in september. New details are surfacing about the man called a homicidal psychopath escaped from a hospital in hawaii and flew to the bay area. Prosecutors are now trying to keep Randall Saito in jail instead of sending him back to the hospital which he escaped. He was found in stockton with two fake i. D. S, two cell phones and more than 6,000 in crash. Prosecutors say they proves he carefully planned his escape and had help and they dont want him escaping again. Investigateers are trying to understand how he got out before. He opened a combination locked gate, took a taxi, chartered a plane to malibu and flew commercial into san jose. Saito was committed to the hospital in 1981 after being acquitted by reason of insanity for the murder of a woman he shot and stabbed multiple times. Three former employees of the north bay sun and motor cars were arrested today on charges that they embezzled more than 6 million. Federal agents arrested the former general manager and two other former employees. According to the indictment, the three made payments on fraudulent invoices to fake advertising vendors who then sent the money back to the general manager. The fire destroyed vegetation that usually helps to stop slides. The fire destroyed more than 1,000 buildings and blamed for two deaths, including one firefighter. The thomas fire burned more than a quarter of a million acres and is the largest fire in state history. New at 6 00, a south bay man who heroically saved a womans life on the cal train tracks yesterday said he knew he had to act fast. Walter wilson pulled the woman out of her prius that had become immolized on the tracke yesterday. A train slammed right into the car, pushing it 100 feet and flipping in into the air. Wilson says he went into action when he saw an approaching train, knowing he didnt have much time to save the driver. I snatched her out of the car and ran about 50 feet, 60 feet to goat get to this safe governor over here. By the time we got to the corner, five, six seconds later, boom, the train hit her car. Brian of the California Department of fish and wildlife never assumed that all biology experiments take place open in a lab. In this case, the fishing hole was a parking lot at the beach. The salmon returning to nature via what biologists call a hatchery intervention. I dont want salmon to go extinct. These are beautiful fish. They belong here. Theyve been here in the past. Thats manford of the California Department of fish and wildlife. He designed an experiment to save the population in redwood creek. This is a homecoming. Fish and wildlife pulled them out of the creek back in summer of 2015 when they were this big. They spent sthir entire lives in a hatchery. Never been in the ocean. Its a matter of survivability. Youre making life easy for them. In a way, we are. The 200 fish that we collected, if we had left them in the creek, chances are one or two or three would have returned. Reporter today, volunteered returned almost 200 coho back to the creek. One at a time. Youre gently lowing them in the water and giving them an opportunity to mate. Reporter then they saw the damage. Were like, oh, wow. It looked pretty smushed. Reporter soon came the sirens. They asked us if we needed any medical attention. My response was no. Reporter both declined medical help but paramedics said they should wait inside the ambulance. He said its the safest place to be on the freeway. They said, okay, were going to need to take your blood pressure, vitals. I jokingly asked if there was going to be a charge and he said no. Reporter later they headed to the party, the shock wearing off, until the next morning. I just felt very wronged.
