Thats been a steady lines of drivers going back as the Evacuation Order was lifted. Reporter a line of cars stretched down highway 29 today, filled with families eager to go home. I am so thrilled. The first thing youre going to do when you get home . I just want to kiss the ground, but ive got to clean out my moms refrigerator and freezer. Reporter just a few miles away, danger still looms. Pillars of fire crackled under dense clouds of smoke in the hills overlooking napa wineries. Helicopters swung across the sky, dropping water trying to stop the march of flames. Honestly at this point, the whole thing is surreal. Reporter ed hudson watched from below. The sleepless nights have taken a toll. When the helicopters go, its going to set in this has happened. Reporter hes one of many worried about the regions economy. Even those people who havent lost their homes have lost their jobs. Reporter wineries are closed and employees dont know when theyll work again. Its only been a week. It seems like a month of this. Its just every day has been full of emotion. Reporter firefighters are also feeling the effects of long nights on the front line. Today, the calm winds helped them gain the upper hand. Unless something changes, i think well see those containment percentages go higher and higher every day. Reporter there were hot temperatures today, so firefighters say theyre looking forward to the cooler evening hoping that will help with the hot spots that flared up. Tiffany wilson, abc7 news. The winds have died down at the north bay fires, and more relief is on the way. Sky map 7, you can see the fires are still very active in sonoma county, and you can see this is near sap that rosa. Firefighters are about to get more assistance from the weather. Meteorologist drew tuma has more. Those winds today thankfully remained on the light side that really helped firefighters gain on those containment numbers. Tonight is a similar story. Winds in the north bay, anywhere from calm to less than 4 Miles Per Hour. As as we go through the next few hours, the winds are less than 10 Miles Per Hour and that will be the theme throughout the entire day monday. The winds are going to remain very light in the area where we have those active fires. You look at the days ahead and what is increasing are rain chances, especially thursday and into friday. Thats the next chance of seeing wet weather and the start of storm season has some light storms. Thats where this storm ranks on our storm impact scale, from 1 to 5. The one on thursday is a one. The north bay has the pest chance for rainfall. So well time out this system and show you what you can expect in terms of rainfall where you live in that full accuweather forecast. Firefighters are getting the upper hand on a series of fires that forced hundreds out of their homes yesterday. Cornell bernard is there with a look at the destruction left behind. Reporter sky 7 surveyed the damage of beautiful hill top homes reduced to rubble in minutes. Some of the fire damage above the town of sonoma. We found this large home in ruins. The only thing left, the bathroom shower enclosure. Most homes, though, were saved. Fire crews hit two separate blazes hard and the wildfire was stopped before reaching the valley floor. The fire activity settled down overnight. Reporter mandatory Evacuation Orders remain in place. The humidity has stayed low, and the turning conditions are still bad. So we want people to understand that these areas are going to remain closed for a little while longer. We have pictures. We have some clothes. A grass fire caused concern in nevado this afternoon. No homes were damaged, but they were threatened. Some were evacuated for a short time. The marin county fire chief said the bay area cant afford to have another big fire. We put a big hit on it early, and the modifier did a fantastic job. Jumped on this quickly. We provided many resources for agencies. About five acres burned but there were no injuries. The cause is still under investigation. We have much more ahead on the north bay fires, including why firefighters believe immigrants may be missing in the fire but not in danger. Some good news for people affected by two fires burning in mendocino and lake counties. Plus and the Redwood Valley fire burning in Mendocino County is 45 contained tonight. Some mandatory Evacuation Orders were lifted today. People living in Redwood Valley and Potter Valley were let back on their properties. Even so, officials warn if conditions change, mandatory evacuations could be reissued. That fire has burned 35,000 acres. Meantime, the sulfur fire in lake county is now about 80 contained. Its burned more than 2200 acres, and the Sheriffs Department says about 150 structures have been destroyed. All Evacuation Orders have been lifted and crews are continuing to assess the damage. Fire Officials Say on top of fights fires, theyre fighting rumors that undocumented rumors that undocumented immigrants will be rounded up. They say its possible the missing persons list is longer than it should be because those people are afraid to speak up. They are humans that have been affected by this fire. Some are traveling farther away from this area to the coast, sleeping in their cars with their children. We need them to utilize these Evacuation Centers and not be afraid. Officials say if you go to an evacuation shelter, youll get help, no questions asked. When our neighbors are in need, abc 7 shows up. Monday and tuesday, the north bay will continue to have poor air quality where we have the fires actively burning at this hour. But the big takeaway is by thursday early, area wide we should improve to good air quality that coincides with rain moving through, helping to cleanse our air with the smoke we have at this hour. Current numbers, were cooling off back into the 50s and 60s in most spots. A couple of mild spots. San francisco at 71. Santa rosa down to 59. San ramone, current numbers at 59, as well.
