36 with new fatalities reported today in napa, mendocino and sonoma counties. 19 people have been killed in the tubbs fire alone which is now the third deadliest fire in california history behind the Oakland Hills firestorm in 1991 and the Griffith Park fire in los angeles in the 1930s. Hundreds of people are still missing in Sonoma County. Authorities are looking for 235 people. At least 5700 structures now have been burned down including 5 of the housing in santa rosa. We do have some good news on containment figures. Check out the atlas fire in napa and solano counties. Containment on that jumped from 27 to 45 . Significant increase. Containment on the tubbs fire grew from 25 to 44 . But the fire grew by about 500 acres. The pocket fire in Sonoma County grew by about a thousand acres to 10,000 acres burning now and included into one and have 10 containment. Up in mendocino county, the Redwood Potter fires containment is at about 20 . And the sulfur fire in lake county is holding at 2500 acres and is now 60 contained. In all i know these are a lot of numbers, but 177,000 acres have now burned. Thats a revised figure from earlier today. With a red flag warning in effect, the Sonoma County sheriff warned people tonight to heed the evacuation orders from his deputies. If they tell you to get out, get out. Parts of the bay area are in red flag warnings with winds expecting to pick up speed. Not what any of us want to hear. This could make a bad situation worse near the fire lines. I do want to show you the fire danger is rising. Increasing winds in the hills lowering humidity and any fires that do develop or existing fires could spread rapidly, so just be vigilant and remain safe. Red flag warning for the entire north bay hills and the north bay valleys, also for lake county, east bay hills until saturday night. Wind gusts in the hills could reach 40 to 60 miles per hour. At the lower elevations, 30 to 35. Whats going to be disturbing is the humidity level will plunge, 10 to 20 with the dry air gusting winds. It is going to be a very critical fire situation. Wind advisory begins at 11 00 p. M. Tonight. Watch out for toppling trees and power lines. This covers the hilltops but also covers lake and solano counties. When you take a look at the winds right now, theyre still pretty light. Mt. Tam is coming up to 20 miles per hour. Relative humidity has creeped up, which is obviously what firefighters need to hear, but the humidity is not going to remain in that range. As a matter of fact, it is going to drop. Heres a look at the winds in the hills and in the north bay, what were expecting is the winds to go from light to all of a sudden ramping up in the wee hours of the morning, going into early tomorrow morning with those winds coming up, the fire danger will remain elevated. The entire city of calistoga remains evacuated because of the approaching tubbs fire. Weve been up on the firelines and shes live now in calistoga with more. The wind, as weve said is what everyone is watching tonight. Theres a red flag warning that sandhya mentioned. In calistoga, the winds calm currently. But firefighters have positioned themselves on mt. St. Helena tonight to make sure the fire doesnt jump highway 29. We hopped in a truck with a calfire captain. He took us to the top of the mountain which is the edge of the tubbs fire. Tankers dropped fire retardant as they tried to save the cell and radio towers at the top of the mountain. The most active fire is around red hill and mt. St. Helena. Flames reached highway 29 in some places today but fire crews have maintained the highway as their hard line. O the way the winds are going to blow today, if the fire gets established and goes across 29, the fire will come into the town of calistoga. Firefighters are dealing with incredibly steep, dense terrain. They have hose lines across the mountain in an effort to protect from any hot spots or rolling embers that could spread the fire closer to town. Theyre trying to strengthen that line. In addition to the long hours that crews are working, i can tell you when we went up the mountain it was warm and by the time the sun started to set, it got really cold. Firefighters dealing with some extreme weather conditins as well. I can tell you within the last half hour ive seen about a dozen Oakland Police patrol cars and officers roll through calistoga. These u. S. Forest Service Crews tapped into Backyard Pools to hose down a defensive line behind the homes. Dry creek road is the line in the sand. If flames cross the road, hundreds of homes are in jeopardy as is all of napa valley. To the east of dry creek road theyve already fortified with a long line of bulldozers and fire retardant. Heres a look at the forecast. High fire danger. Gusty winds overnight tonight. Smoky skies expected through the weekend and there a chance of showers next week. Thats about as encouraging as i can tell you the news is in terms of the weather. Here taps way the air quality will play out. This air quality is going to remain poor to unhealthy both saturday and sunday. Good idea to stay indoors, try to limit your outdoor time. If you do have to be outdoor, definitely try to get a mask if you can. Many Hardware Stores have run out, i just want to warn you. Tuesday will be similar. And the winds begin the ease up heading into saturday afternoon and evening. Relative humidity is something to watch. As we head towards 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow down to the teens in santa rosa, look what happens. 3 00 is single digits. Cloefberdale, lakeport, this is why that fire danger will remain high. Low 40s to low 50s, windy, smoky, hazy as we head to the afternoon hours, the hazy conditions will continue with the smokefilled air. Temperatures will be coming up. But then theyre going to dramatically drop as we take you into thursday, october 19th. Were watching rain that will develop. Theres a chance by thursday afternoon in mendocino county, then a better likelihood by thursday night across the bay area. Going into early friday morning were looking at what could be a great thing for firefighters if theyre still battling those blazes. It doesnt look like theyll get the upper hand overnight tonight. Go, go youre looking at really dramatic, intense new video just released by the Sonoma County Sheriffs Office late tonight showing deputies urgently evacuating people sunday night when the tubbs fire broke out near santa rosa, where so much damage took place. From the deputys body camera, you can see all the bright orange flames, the thick smoke, all of the embers blowing in every direction making it hard to see anything at all. This deputy stayed so cool and calm. The Sheriffs Office showed this video to demonstrate how dangerous the conditions are. And just to urge people to continue to stay out of evacuated areas as the winds are expected to pick up tonight. Its also a reminder that if you dont evacuate, thats what you can get stuck in. The Sheriffs Office announced new evacuations tonight meantime in the Alexander Valley area north of healdsburg in anticipation of those flames moving again. Theres a new number of deaths from the fires, 36 after officials announced one more in Sonoma County and one more in mendocino county. More than 200 people are reported missing. Revised figures show these fires have burned 177,000 acres. The firefighters have made some gains today, however, but face a very difficult weekend ahead. Dangerous conditions are expected through sunday with strong winds that sandhya has been talking about here tonight. And five days after the fire started the losses are staggering and growing. Reporter a daunting task for firefighters attacking multiple wildfires amid the deadliest week in california history. 6,000 homes and businesses destroyed in an area larger than new york city burned to the ground. Officials say it will be weeks before they determine the causes. More than 2800 homes were destroyed here in santa rosa alone and surrounded by all this devastation including the cars and trucks and all this furniture, take a look at what we found. A handful of homes Still Standing and the homeowners say they cant even believe it. Jean welch and mike hibbard overwhelmed by the destruction everywhere they look. Ive been here 39 years. And to find its Still Standing, must have done something right somewhere along the line. This is probably the only three homes from here for threequarters of a mile that way and one mile that way. Michael clements not as lucky. He and his family making a middle of the night escape just ahead of the flames returning friday to the site of where his home once stood. Probably within a half hour most of these houses were already gone. In sonoma, a crew of firefighters saving several homes in just a few hours. We were just literally running from house to house. Its supersmoky, superhot. You really cant see very well. This house spared firefighters say because it had builtin roof irrigation. And those exhausted firefighters resting wherever they can. Now, as sources continue pouring in to fight the north bay wildfire, a massive base camp has been growing at the fairgrounds in santa rosa as the staging area command post. Were moving this fence over to make room for more firefighters coming in. Reporter theyre arriving from all over. We just came here today, trying to get checked in, actually. Reporter and from Santa Barbara and a crew from oregon. Were bringing our 20man hand crew, tools, chain saws and an eagerness to work. Reporter some come from mutual aid Fire Departments across the state. This is a challenging fire, were happy to be here to help. Reporter some drop what theyre doing. Im a rancher. I was working cattle, branding calves two days ago. Reporter he also drives a bulldozer. We take uf our cowboy hats and load up our fire shirts and load up the dozers and go. Reporter they need people and supplies to support them. Often that support comes from equally far away. Its really like a small city. Reporter a city that springs up overnight with help from the california conservation corps. We came overnight and set up camp. Reporter you came here from chico . Yes. We have a walmart, we have supplies set up with everything that firefighters could need. Reporter they bring their own electricity, their own water and communication, portable showers, a Medical Clinic and a dining hall. The kitchen crew served 3,000 breakfasts this morning. Reporter the kitchen is staffed by inmates, but theyre trained to drop what theyre doing and fight fires if necessary. All of us have been doing fires from day one. The Public Utilities commission sent a letter to pg e asking it to preserve all evidence with the wildfires in napa solano counties. Electrical lines knoedck by winds on sunday played a role in sparking the fire. Pg es ceo said weve been part of these communities more more than a hundred year. These people are our friends and neighbors and were devastated by what theyre going through. Well work shoulder to shoulder with them to rebuild whats lost as long as it takes. The utility says it has established several Emergency Centers for base camps and fire crews. Pg e says it has restored power to 80 of homes and businesses that lost power during the fire. About 29,000 outages do remain. Hundreds of people remain missing but some have been found, thank goodness. Thats the case for normazahr who was featured on the news earlier this week. She lives in the Bennett Valley area of santa rosa. She was found late last night at a walmart in rohnert park and helped her get in contact with her family. Shes safe and sound. Were encountering Amazing Stories of survival from the north bay fires. Theyre people stories but theres something else, too. The entire neighborhood burned down, but somehow this cat was found alive huddled underneath a car. The cats name is milo. A Police Officer crawled under the car to get him to safety. He was injured but alive and taken in a patrol car to get some help. Milo should be okay. Turning lemons into lemonade or in this case grapes into wine. I have stomped many grapes over the years. None of them in these conditions. The north bay winery trying to in the midst of the chaos of the north bay fires, many winemakers are trying to get back to business stomping grapes the Old Fashioned way. Without power, theyve had to rely on the old school methods. It might be a first for winemaker dillon sheldon, hes stomping grapes the Old Fashioned way. Trying to improvise without power. Reporter he works in coffey park, where the power has been out since monday. Burntout neighborhoods caught in the fires path are only a half block away. Its like being in beirut. Reporter a small generator powers wine to extract it from tanks. Many have lost everything are still in harms way. My girlfriends family is actually in danger of losing their home. Theyre in sonoma. They got evacuated a couple days ago. Reporter owner john philps says stopping production would be ruin for the unprocessed grapes. Turn lemons into lemonade and try to have some normalcy and continue to paurt the Wine Community and keep it going. Reporter some equipment now on loan to phillips from nearby wineries. Competition now on hold. Three doors down at the Wine Services generators power a grape press. Employees are soldiering on despite the devastation around them. Its very eerie and odd. But working is a good distraction from the reality thats in the neighborhoods that some of us live in. Reporter harvesting remaining grapes is now a challenge. Some wineries in sonoma and napa counties were damaged in the fires. The lasting effect still unknown. Dillon sheldon says hell keep stomping grapes to support fellow winemakers who have lost it all.
