Even though the university has handed out letters to protesters letting them know they could be expelled or possibly even arrested for being here overnight, white, whether or not i get arrested is not as important as the liberation of the palestinian people. Protesters say they want stanford to take action. I would like the university to cut all of its ties to israel, to cut all of its ties to companies that aid israel in, funding the war crimes they commit against the palestinian people. Usc has already canceled its commencement because of on campus protests, and many students in the bay area are wondering what might be next for them. White house says mr. Biden reiterated that position on the call. The two leaders also reviewed ongoing talks to secure the release of hostages, with an immediate cease fire in gaza. Well, this is certainly not making it easier to make it in the bay. Home prices are considerably higher than a year ago. The California Association of realtors released new numbers. Those show that last month, the median price of a home in the bay area was nearly 1. 4 million. That is more than 15 higher than the median price at this time last year. Its also a sign that prices have recovered from the dip they took in fall 2022, following the federal reserves Interest Rate hike. Now, experts say buyers are tired of waiting for those Interest Rates to come down, and they are paying more than they wanted to. Low inventory is also playing a role. The celebration of a pandemic policy has just too popular to scrap, and today marks four years since jfk drive turned into a car free promenade. The one and a half mile stretch of road was reserved for pedestrians and bikes during the pandemic. The goal was to give people a safe place to gather outdoors, while in 2022 the city decided not to reopen that road to cars, voters later made that change permanent. We knew that prior to the pandemic, three out of every four vehicles that used to travel down this road didnt start their trip in a park, and they didnt end it in a park, which meant that they were using this beautiful space, this incredibly valuable space, to get someplace else more quickly. That is not the purpose of a park. Hundreds of people turning out for todays celebration, including mayor london breed. Were back in 60s just ahead. Organizers of todays rally say they were also marking ten years since a young black man was assaulted by officers. You say . Yes. Its been ten years since Catherine Wade says she saw Antioch Police officers beat her son outside their home. And he beat him up about 4 or 5 whacks and screamed and blood went out of his face. On sunday afternoon, demonstrators rallied outside the Antioch Police department calling for justice in millard baldwins name, who died by suicide in 2021. His family blames the Police Department for his trauma. My son became mentally ill after that. He wanted to be a correctional officer and he was going to take his test to be a correctional officer. Baldwin was one of the people named in the ongoing racist tax scandal involving about half of the departments officers. The messages came to light during an investigation by the fbi and das office after allegations of misconduct sending guerrillas and monkeys and other racist memes. Are we safe with those guys . Community members say theyre worried about the Police Officers involved in the racist tech scandal, possibly returning to patrol the streets of antioch. The Police Department has not chosen to be transparent about this. And so we dont know which officers have been reinstated and which officers have been rewarded for their misconduct with a years long paid vacation. That was last summer. The annual event is not permitted. As you can see, it features skateboards and bicyclists testing tricks down dangerous hills. Last year, teens and police clashed, resulting in what some called a riot. Four teens brought the suit, claiming it was actually the police who broke the law. The City Attorney says he will try to get that suit thrown out of court. Lets take a live look at our state capitol, where a big celebration is set for tomorrow to honor two Oakland High School basketball programs. Were talking about the state Champion Girls Basketball Team from oakland high and the state champion boys Basketball Team from oakland technical high. Both teams took home the top prize this year. Theyve already gotten special shout outs at warriors games, and tomorrow theyll be honored on the floor of the California State Senate and assembly. Theyll also be visiting local elementary and middle schools to hopefully help inspire younger students. California marked workers memorial day today, a time to remember and honor those who were hurt or have lost their lives on the job or because of their job. He highlighted improvements in working conditions and wages for fast food workers, new protections for warehouse workers from unsafe quotas, and the end of unfair Pay Practices impacting Garment Industry workers. Well, another big sur marathon is in the books and we have a local winner, simon ricci of San Francisco crossed the finish line in two hours, 29 minutes and 30s peyton bilo from outside sacramento, came in first in the womens division. She was the only woman to clock in under three hours, with a total time of two hours, 55 minutes and 10s. Incredible. And get this. This was the first marathon for both of them. More than 4000 people attempted the course this year, but the course of course, looked a little different. Back in march, a chunk of highway one that would have been part of the course collapsed during the storm. And good news for people who want to head that way, visit big sur. Caltrans is opening the convoys on highway one to the public tomorrow. The highway has been closed since that collapse last month, and since then caltrans has been leading convoys for residents twice a day. But starting tomorrow, anyone can join the convoys. They run from 7 to 8 in the morning, then from 5 to 6. So dont miss it. Theres going to be a long gap there. Theres a catch. The afternoon southbound convoys will only be open to residents and essential workers. One last thing about the marathon down there. Our very own philip suzuki ran that marathon. He came in 442nd and he is he does it all here at the station. So congratulations, philip. Its his 29th marathon. Yeah, he wont stop. How many miles do you calculated . It was like 780 something miles. Hes running these things and hes got a train for him too. So its good weather for it. Great weather. Perfect. Was it windy . A little bit windy on the coast. And were going to see another day like that again tomorrow. Kind of a summer like spread of microclimates around the bay area. 60s bayside, cool upper 50s and low 60s near the coast, but inland. Today we manage 70s, including san jose. We managed to get up to 73 degrees, now down to 59 wind speeds starting to back off a bit around the santa clara valley. Walnut creek one of the warmer spots today, up to 76 degrees. Also now down to 59 over in oakland. Winds still out of the west to 12 high earlier today in the mid 60s, 56 currently and back over to San Francisco. Kind of a cool afternoon high of only 64. And that winds still out of the west at about 21mph. So what we have to look forward to across the inland valleys, especially wednesday and thursday. Highs in the mid 70s to low 80s. Then get ready for some changes as we approach next weekend. Cooler and breezy again. Might see a chance of showers next saturday. Well have a look at that coming up in just a moment. Notice the wind speeds all the way into Solano County. Typically this will bring in some patchy low clouds as we head towards the morning hours, but notice the temperature and wind progression tomorrow. Wind speeds picking back up again like clockwork mid afternoon into early evening. That will once again keep temperatures around San Francisco and the coast on the chilly side for monday. So we wake up to temperatures mainly in the low 50s. By lunchtime. High temperatures near San Francisco staying in those mid 60s upper 60s near oakland and low 70s around san jose. Now moving forward tuesday into wednesday. More mid 70s inland. Wednesdays high starting to climb up near 80 degrees in concord, 79 and 78. In san jose and low to mid 70s bayside. Thursday should be the warmest day of the week, with 80 near san jose and a chance those east bay valleys and maybe around the north bay two could see some mid 80s. And that thursday forecast. Now, as we take a look at the month of may, were going to be transitioning into may 2nd half of the week. Notice the rain averages what we get per month. Those typically drop off. In fact, the daily average for rainfall really starting to dry out. So the odds of seeing rain they decrease. But they dont go completely away. And notice whats happening here towards the later part of the week as we get towards the weekend. Thats something we may have to contend with, especially, i think, around the north bay as we get into saturday night next weekend , High Pressure holding its ground for the workweek and like clockwork, right there. Stay tuned. Next weekend could begin with some showers, and we will see some cooler temperatures as we roll into friday and saturday. Now San Francisco the warm up could be around the low 70s by thursday, but its really the valley locations, inland areas getting a 10 to 15 degree jump at those high temperatures. Wednesday and thursday should see some 80s and then stay tuned. First weekend of may. Oh man, lets not start this again. Lets not. There it is. Chance of some showers. Just something to keep an eye on. Okay, okay. Were not were not were not there yet. Okay. Rob thanks. All right. Heres something i always wanted to say on the air. Zebras on the loose where the guys were spottseed four zebras taking a stroll through the neighborhood in north bend, washington. Today, police say they escaped from a transport trailer when the driver stopped to secure them along the highway. Some people stopped to take videos. Others tried to help corral the animals to safety. One zebra actually wandered into someones yard. Hello . Yeah, just curious. One baby won first place in the Elementary School section for middle school. Adelante won one for girls. And ocala one for the boys. Congrats to everyone. Absolutely well, the nfl is taking a controversial and conspicuous step to improve player safety. Theyre called guardian caps. Its a soft shell helmet engineered to better protect players against head injuries. You might have seen it already. The nfl introduced the caps into its Training Camps in 2022. Look at that. Last year, the league expanded the requirement to regular season practices. Now the nfl is allowing players to wear the caps during regular season games. Its up to the players. Some people say they look kind of ridiculous, too ridiculous to wear, but league data says those caps can enhance protection by as much as 20. Talk about cte and helping avoid some of those things that affect you later on in life. I think if theyre able to prove that it does reduce that, then players will get on board with it. Well, theres new guidelines. In other words, player option on wearing them that go into effect this season. All right Anthony Flores here. Now with talking football to baseball. Yeah i was just going to say its going to take one good player to do it during a regular season game. And then maybe others will follow suit. Now after the game, manager bob melvin was asked what grade hed give his team. One month into the season, you look at the stats across the board, whether its pitching numbers, whether its the offensive numbers, it hasnt been great. But to sit here right at 500 or game below and we know theres a lot more in there. Its not horrible place to be. At some point in time well hit our stride, but im going to not do the grade thing right now. Cal ripken jr checking out the Series Finale between the as and the orioles. Tonight, as part of our ongoing series race in america, the conversation are Jodi Hernandez opens up about her familys roots in russell city. Jodi sees for the first time where her family once lived and interviews her own father, joe, who has never talked about russell city until now. I never told anybody about russell city because there was some shame there. Yeah, its hard to talk about it. Its hard to have this conversation with you about that. Its just like a dark secret for me. How come . Dad, i was hiding it . Because i think if somebody knew who i was or where i came from, that i would have. I wouldnt have any friends. All these years. All these years. And i never knew my familys history in russell city. My father, joe hernandez, lived there until the age of nine. I found out because i called my parents one night and they told me they watched a documentary called the apology, the slum. The end result of this disease is threatening the vitality of the entire community. The film features russell City Residents and their descendants. Established in 1853. Russell city today would be located south of hayward regional shoreline, near the hayward airport. It is now some 200 acres of industrial warehouses. Tell me what you remember about russell city. I lived on my grandma and grandpas property. On her property. She also had a little house. To me, it was more like a shack and no bathroom, no back in those days in russell city, they had no. Nobody had a showers or anything like that. We had what they called a. On a house, i guess you would call it outside. There was a sink out there with a wash rag. You just cleaned yourself off as best you could. My dad made the best of the living conditions. He spoke very Little English school was difficult, but my father also remembered some happy times too. As a little boy, i did have a certain amount of happiness, mostly within myself. You know, i would get wrapped up in making little toys or whatever. Well, my grandmother and grandfather were just beautiful. They treated us so nice. Nearly 60 years ago, russell city was bulldozed and sold off to developers. Alameda county and the city of hayward forced 1400 residents out, wiping russell city off the map. Well, obviously what they did was wrong. I mean, it was racism, pure and simple. They didnt want us there. I didnt know or think or think about why. I just thought its just the way it is. We used to play on these tracks. We used to jump them. My fathers cousin, richard lopez, met us to show us some of the beginnings of our family in russell city. Lopezs father owned a Restaurant Bar called california cafe, so our property was right here. And it came out this way. I mean, this was where you guys grew up, and now its. Yeah yeah. Industrial. Yeah. And thats why thats why a lot of the people now want reparations because they hardly gave them any money for all their lots and their land, their businesses, you know, that was their livelihood. They cut them all out a few blocks away, we saw where my dad once lived. And from there to here, we figure its about where the property was at of grandma and joe. Joe lived on the corner and grandmas house. Be back here. Dad yeah. Whats that like for you to be here . Where you. Well, does that tell you anything . Its sad. Yeah part of our souls are still here, though. Oh, yeah . Yeah, yeah, you can feel it. The city may be gone, but the memories live on. Oh. Thats cool. This large mural at eighth street and maple court is one of the few reminders left of the community. It also shows the great raid. Charles, who performed in russell city. What do you think you got from russell city . I think that it shaped me in the sense that it just made me want to prove to myself and anybody else that im worthy of. Anything. Just like anybody else. You know that i didnt want to do this, but i, i, i believe that i owe it to you. Im proud of you, dad. Oh thank you, jody. I needed to hear that. Im proud of myself, too. I love that. What a gift that jody has now that she knows her familys history. And shes been able to share that with everyone else. Now to watch part one of our series on russell city, go to nbcbayarea. The berkeley Fire Department hosted its first in fire camp event this weekend thats dedicated to helping women find careers in the fire service. Women who signed up got hands on training and education in firefighting, including exercises, apparently chainsaws, ladder climbing and working with the fire hose. We find that, you know, obviously the fire service is a male dominated field. We want to be able to show so that anybody can do this job male, female, whatever. And we want to give an opportunity to be able to have an avenue to explore what this job is at. Berkeley Fire Department, host this event every year. And anyone with an interest in fire service is welcome to sign up. All right. Well ahead of asian american, native Hawaiian Pacific islander heritage month in may. Bay area based olympian, two time World Champion figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi now has her own barbie doll. And i got to talk with her about this process with mattel and what it means for future generations. It was just a huge honor and i think just exciting to, you know, it was over a year ago, so it was right before the barbie movie was coming out. And especially, you know, joining the group of women in that series, like maya angelou, anna may wong, cecilia cruz, so many heroes. Tell me about the choosing of the moment and the outfit. How did that come about . I think its just so identifiable for, the olympic golds that it made sense. And i was really excited that they were, leaning in that direction and, you know, down to the little detail of the little gold ribbon in the hair and my skates and on representation, it really meant a lot that they, wanted to get an accurate, like, likeness of me. We want kids to see themselves and to be able to identify with their heroes. So so, so, yeah, i was really, really happy to see that, they wanted to embrace all of that. And and, you know, hopefully other people see that, this doll just doesnt just represent, the olympic achievement, but, you know, also, what came after the olympics. And thats really primarily been my work with always dream. Yeah. And shes done so much with her always dream organization. Its about Early Childhood literacy and family engagement. Its a very big passion for her. And by the way, you can preorder that doll right now. Its 35. Thats a good price, i think. So thats nice. All right. Yeah. Rob mayeda here talking about some pretty nice weather to a point. Yeah trying to keep everybody happy. If you like warm weather, you got you happy. But showers on the weekend . Maybe not so much. Well kind of talk about that later. Lets talk about whats going on right now. We have some breezy conditions still ongoing around the bay area now talking about wind earlier, about two hours ago, sfo airport had a gust up to 44mph. Bumpy rides in and out of the airport this evening, wind speeds coming down a little bit. 54 degrees west to 21mph. And you can see those wind speeds all the way through the Carquinez Strait into the delta, Solano County, onward to stockton and sacramento tonight. Now, tomorrow, wind speeds come down for a time during the morning, but they stay in that gusty range of 20 to 35mph for the better part of the day tomorrow. You see these areas in red and purple near bodega bay. Same locations. Today that had those blustery conditions. Thats going to keep our temperatures in check for the bay and coast for another day. So we wake up tomorrow morning with numbers in the low 50s. Patchy low clouds, lunchtime temperatures in the 60s around San Francisco and oakland. And theyll be staying there as those winds pick up 73 degrees around san jose and mid 70s in reach again for concord and walnut creek, morgan hill, low 70s and 73 degrees in santa rosa. Now for tuesday. The wind speeds start to come down just a little bit. Not much change. Bay side of those temperatures now as we move forward into wednesday. Notice weve got 70s now near San Francisco mid 70s for oakland, upper 70s near san jose and now by thursday. Look at more orange on the map here. San Jose Saratoga down into morgan hill should see numbers near 80 degrees. And theres a chance we might see low to mid 80s out towards Solano County and the north bay, upper 70s to low 80s. And that warming trend may actually last for another day. I want to show you the temperature progression here for san jose, and notice how those numbers come up all the way through friday. So three days in san jose, we could be close to 80 degrees. But look at how those temperatures really fall off there as we head towards saturday. Those spring showers we were referring to could materialize these later on saturday. Notice how High Pressure weakens, allowing this system to move through the bay area saturday evening, saturday night and then by sunday should get those clearing skies again. Second half of the week, though, does look cooler and breezy again, so well warm up a little bit for the middle part of the week right now. Warmest days in that tuesday through friday timeline. Then as we head into next weekend, looks like we could be contending with some showers. Not for the entire weekend. Right now, late saturday, maybe just very early sunday morning with some clearing skies as we get into the first weekend of may. Just like that. There it is. Did you have a jarring response to that weekend weather . I do have a response. Its not bad at all. No. Yeah. Its just a sprinkle here and there. Yeah. All right. Okay. Rob theres a positive spin taylor swift making Music History again. I need to have irrational confidence. It would just be fun to fun to do something. How do you do that . I dont know, but when youre when youre 14 and youre steph curry, thats what you look like. Yeah. Since then, curry has won four nba titles and two mvps. Hes considered the greatest shooter in nba history. And right there, folks would have been fun to been there in the gym with him when he was 14 throwing it up. He probably stood out way big time back then. Hes still he was doing that at anyway. Yeah, he is pretty great. All right. Prince harry is returning to the uk. Hes expected to attend a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games next week. Its a sporting event for wounded veterans founded by the prince himself. Hell be giving a reading during the ceremony, and it is the first major event he will be attending in the uk for some time. He and his wife, meghan markle, stepped back as senior royals back in 2020. No word on whether she will be attending the event as well. Well, taylor swift is making Music History again and i love you. Its ruining my life. Pop stars tortured Poets Department had the biggest streaming debut for any album in history. Mi wrong box. Check it out. Galena. Beautiful car right there. She has a habit of hanging out in boxes. Galenas owners say they shipped a box of shoes to amazon for return, but little did they know, galena had made herself at home inside. Her owners say they thought she had just disappeared. They were heartbroken. That is, until they got a call from 650 miles away in riverside. An amazon employee found galena took her in. I just couldnt even believe that she was in california. I thought it was a prank. Like, i still, its still hard to wrap my brain around. Galenas family says she went six days without food or water in that box, but she made a full recovery and shes now back home and safe. All right. How about tomorrow mornings weather . Rob mayeda get our audience ready for the workweek. A little chilly, well have some low 50s highs, though. By the afternoon. Climbing into the 70s and midweek, inland areas could see 70 to low 80s.
