Since shortly before 9 00 this morning about a hundred propalestinian protesters have been blocking security gates there. We want to give you a live look from nbc area skyranger. This is the area of dropoff traffic outside of the airport. Literally no cars passing through that area because you can see the protesters there Walking Around in the circle in front of that area. Police officers, they were standing near those protesters, but so far there is no sun of any arrests. We have Live Team Coverage and mike inouye following the backups leading into the airport. Lets check in with Ginger Conejero saab. You say protesters are making it very difficult for those trying to catch their flights. What else are you hearing . Laura and marcus, we are told that at this point by sfo president , the International Terminal is still open, however the security checkpoints are closed and theyve been blocked off for most of the morning and that is what is causing the major disruption here at sfo. One of those actions, you can see is happening right here behind us. When we first reported on this earlier this morning, the security checkpoints were closed, but passengers were still able to access the security checkpoints at the domestic terminal. This action right here that blocks off the walkway to terminals, 1, 2 and 3 as well as the domestic part of the airport has made that much more difficult. Protesters are chained to one another, this one, specifically, as i mentioned blocks off the walkway 1, 2 and 3 as well as the baggage claim. As protesters were setting up this action this morning you can see the disruption this blockage creates. A couple coming up the escalator his to walk over the protesters with their luggage and that gentleman happens to be a representative from the Utah Legislature and kevin stratton. Here is what he had to say about whats going on here today. My sweet wife asked, you know, is that really do you think its doing any good . Well, i think those protesting them are feeling better that theyre trying to make a difference. Again, in life, in the world, there are two sides. Understanding, talking and working together with love, compassion and charity is always the best way to do it and that was a little bit disruptive and it went a little bit far putting peoples safety there as risk by their locations. As i mentioned, there are several actions. Another one just happening feet away from the from what we showed you blocking the escalators. This one right here is one of the original actions that happened that blocked the security checkpoint. You are seeing this one at g gates. You can see that protesters are chained to one another and also chained to what appeared to be the railings at the security checkpoint. If and when or if arrests might be made that might make it more difficult for Police Officers, as of now, sfo still saying this terminal is open and the ticketing counters are still open and were showing you not far from where this is happening, you can see where Law Enforcement officials our sfpd Airport Security are directing passengers to take another set of elevators up stairs to take them to the domestic terminals and that is where they will go through security and theyll be brought back to the International Terminal so they can board their flights. Sfo is saying if you are traveling from that International Terminal tack on at least another 30 minutes or that might from my perspective, that might go up, marcus and laura. It doesnt look like these disruptions will be disbanded any time soon. Definitely make some changes in your schedules if youre flying out today. Guys, back to you. We are concerned of those coming out of the area via sfo and if you are visiting San Francisco, let me talk about the logistics and the demonstrations at sfo, thats a discussion for you to have. For me im talking about the nuts and bolts and that is outside of San Francisco. Thats in san bruno where sfo is located. The airport is well south of the city. If you are traversing the city itself you are okay in the seven by seven block. Over here youre looking at the activity and the access and egress out of the International Terminal. If you are using lyft taxis or uber. We are told you can still use the domestic terminal and you go to the kiss and fly which is the north side of the airport itself and you can take the train over there. Sfo just sent over another message on x saying if youre going between the two terminals, domestic and international, also use the air train. They are continuing to operate within the terminal, but as ginger said, allow extra time. Back to you. Thank you very much, mike. This is not the first time protesters have made their voices heard over the war in the middle east. Back in november, demonstrators shut down the bay bridge to protest the war in gaza. The activists stopped traffic for hours and several organ donations were actually delayed and they couldnt get through because of the backup. Participants face misdemeanor charges in San Francisco. In january, propalestinian protesters shut down golden gate bridge. Those protesters drove to the middle of the bridge, got out with signs. Chp says that protest took about 20 to 30 minutes and no arrests were made there. It briefly brought cars to a standstill between depose and octavia in San Francisco. In the end, no arrests were made. Law enforcement rarely gets advanced notice and it does have a protocol in place to get vehicles moving again. Dont forget where dozens shut down montgomery and market streets. The surrounding streets were closed, as well. Some of those protesters locked themselves to a table during the demonstration. What a big moment this is for the city and the ohlone people. The berkeley mayor says this represents the biggest urban land giveback to Indigenous People in california history. The mayor was joined by some of those Indigenous People Holding Signs about rematriating native land. The sogorea te is held by women. We did it by honoring people who live on this historic stand and this is critical to righting past wrongs and embracing a future that honors the diverse history of the region. The area in question on the screen a threeblock area where there is now a parking lot in west berngly and its land of the ohlone people. This is what it looks like today. A far cry from what it looked like 5700 years ago where there was a shell mound that served as a ceremonial and burial site. In this sacred land you can see the area before spanish colonizers took the land and forced Indigenous People into the labor. The shell land was made into local roadways even though it was a burial ground. Here is a description of the confederate villages on the importance of getting that land back. This is where people lived and died, laughed and cried and buried our ancestors shale mounds. The ohlone people are still here and we have a vision for this sacred site. Not for the commercial development being proposed, but a green space with flowing water, a Memorial Park where we can rebury our ancestors who were taken away to museums. The city of berkeley helped to broker that deal for that land purchase. The city contributed 1. 5 million toward the purchase. It took me about an hour and a half from the south bay and there was traffic on the 101 and especially getting into sfo. I was able to park in parking garage a in the International Terminal, but i also know that the airport has put out on social media telling them if you need to drop anybody off do it at the kiss and fly dropoff zone and people can take transit into the airport. I was successfully able to park in garage a in the International Terminal. So heres whats going on right now. Just a few minutes ago, these people were all outside and they were celebrating because they said they had reached their goal of shutting down operations here at the airport for one hour and 58 minutes. Now they have all come inside and you can see that they are chanting right now. Of course, their goal is to ask for a ceasefire in gaza. We also have Health Care Workers for palestine. So this is whats going on now. Theyve come from the outside in front of the International Terminal just a few minutes ago. They walked inside here and now they are at this area, but the airport has been able to allow the passengers to go around these protesters so they can still get to their planes. Theyre just going in a different zone to get through security. Its certainly a tough day for travelers there. You said something about a time limit. Are the protesters saying they want to take a certain amount of time and what is the plan with that . They just had a big powwow together with all protester outside and they were celebrating that they had been here for one hour and 58 minutes disrupting operations, but they said thats not their end goal and they said that was their goal to go past one hour and 50 minutes and they have certainly done that. We do still have the low pressure and when those things are too close together it tightens the wind gradient and actually drives up those wind speeds and well be under the wind advisory through the east bay, and the Santa Cruz Mountains tonight until friday morning and its a long stretch of time and those winds will be coming offshore and youve heard of the diablo winds and thats when theyre gusty through the hillsides, 50 and 60 mile an hour wind gusts and its a good idea to make sure that anything thats outside that you want to stay safe, bring it indoors and charge them up just in case you lose power and as you go on hour by hour for you right around dinner time you see the wind gusts starting to pick up and as you go into the overnight hours it might be tricky to fall asleep as it rattles your window as we go on into the early hours of thursday and this will continue throughout the day on thursday. Still gusty, 25 to 30 mile an hour wind gusts and i dont see it dying down until the second half of friday and as i look ahead into the weekend the winds will die down and well break apart the stubborn weather and well see the wind and the sunshine.
