Some of our Traffic Cameras right there. You can see the wet roads, gloomy skies. The weather is causing some problems including power outages. Crews are cleaning up at the San Francisco National Cemetery tonight, after this massive tree fell right on down. Luckily, no one was hurt. Thank you for joining us tonight. The active weather, far from over. Another round hitting right now. Meteorologist is here with whats happening at the moment. Rob . San jose is an interesting view, as its sort of in a picture what weve been seeing this saturday. Sun at times, downpours, hail, gusty wind. Right now, areas south of san jose on the area, around morgan hill, thats where youre having heavy rain, some hail mixed with this line of showers, including severe thunderstorms, which have prompted the special marine warning offshore for the potential of damaging wind gusts and another one just added in there, approaching monterey bay through 6 00 tonight, as this comes onshore. Were likely to get accumulating hail and snow down to 3,000 feet around the Santa Cruz Mountains. As we jog northward, scattered showers ongoing. This cold, unstable environment is the reason why well have a chance of thunderstorms on into tonight and a potential of low snow levels, allow as 2,000 feet in spots tonight. Well take a closer look at how long this pattern will stick around, and total up the snow totals coming up in two minutes. Lets get up to the sierra right now, rob. A blizzard has shut down i80. This is video from last night. Dozens of cars stuck on 80 at Donner Summit. And this is what Donner Summit looks like right now. Cant really see much. Most of the cars are gone, but no one but the chp and cal trans are allowed on the interstate tonight. The warning is clear, dont head to the sierra, but some people were already up there. Nbc bay areas kristy smith spoke to a family hunkering down near tahoe as the storm rolls through. It was pretty nuts. The wind was howling. Reporter terence and lisa described what it was like overnight in truckee. Yeah, its quite treacherous, just being outside. The couple drove up when conditions were clear last sunday. We thought we were in store for a perfect weather of skiing and playing in the snow, and around thursday, the weather definitely took a turn for the worse. This is video they shared of one of the few times they left the house. Weve only left the house maybe a couple times a day to go walk the dog, but even then, were wearing our full snow gear, we put on snow shoes and were kind of standing in blizzard weather and whiteout conditions. They canceled their planned activities and are hunkering down inside to wait it out. The snow outside is basically five feet tall. As tall as me, so, theres no chance of really doing any of those activities. As of right now, were warm and cozy. Weve got the fireplace going, plenty of food, heat in the house. The power has cut out in and out multiple times, but usually they have it back on in five or anyone outs. Reporter this is what conditions are like today, as crews in truckee try to clear the snow. First and foremost, the message still stands, avoid all mountain travel this weekend. If at all possible. Jeremy is a Public Information officer for cal trans district three. Interstate 80 across the Sierra Nevada is still currently closed between colfax all the way to the nevada state line, thats eastbound and westbound, due to there was a number of spinouts yesterday. Since then, the Winter Weather conditions have only gotten worse. And the snow keeps piling up. Kristy smith, nbc bay area news. Well, highway 50 is open tonight, but chains are required. Taking a live look at highway 50 at ski run right there. You can see cars right there in the snowcovered intersection driving very slowly right now. All right, so, 50 is open. Authorities urging people not to travel to tahoe this weekend. Joining us now, cody bass, the mayor of south lake tahoe, and mayor, thank you for joining us. And where exactly are you and what are you seeing . Well, you know, im actually at my house right now, but i was actually just at the ski resort. They were able to actually operate today, only midmountain powder chairs, the highest you could get, however, you know, we i would say, you know, last year, we had a 70year snowfall, so, this is one of the major snowfalls of this year, and our crews have been really great locally in town. Weve really been able to stay open, most of our businesses are open, absolutely all of our hotels, of course. What ive been telling people is, get here before a storm. Really some of the best times youll have in tahoe is through a storm and during a storm. Its truly majestic, but you cannot travel over our passes while these storms you dont want to be in the eye of the storm. So, get here before, stay through it, and then, you know, sunday, monday, are going to be the best, you know, days of skiing and snowboarding you can have. So, the real thing, as this happens, for anybody thats not here now, is come here on thursday, come here before the storm, take a day off on friday. It really isnt advisable to try to travel through the eye of the storm, and, you know, yes, 50 is open, i would say it looks like tomorrow coming up, you know, please i dont advise anybody to travel until we actually have the storms cleared. Cal trans does an amazing job keeping 50 open, but its really advisable to just come before the storm, stay through it, and it will be a great time. You know, we had a major event planned for this weekend at heavenly that is still going to happen tomorrow evening at 6 00, it will be a great event, but again, really caution taking, or traveling through the sierras when the storm is actually pounding us. Mayor, lets talk about power outages. You said hotels and restaurants are open, but are you seeing power go in and out right now in some of these areas . You know, the last check i had with Liberty Energy, we were at six incidents, about 430 Different Properties out of power. I live close here to a hotel, they were out of power for most of the night, but liberty was on it and theyre back and so i would say Liberty Energy is really doing a good job keeping the power on through this storm. Different than last year, where, you know, we were for weeks and weeks and weeks pounded with these kind of storms. Or crews here locally have theyre more than prepared. I feel confident where were at right now, and confident to welcome back to tahoe as we always will. But definitely do not travel tonight or through these series of storms. This next week will be great, you should come up and visit us, it will be an amazing time. But just do not come through the eye of the storm. Gorgeous area. Mayor bass, thank you for taking the time. Absolutely. Here, many people are digging out, as more snow falls. This video right here from sugar bowl ski resort. Check it out. Snow blowing in the high wind, its stacked up against the door, completely whoa. The videos are always really fun to see. Lets go for a walk. They are not alone. Researchers in the Central Sierra Snow Lab woke up to a similar sight. This is the view to get out of the snow lab this morning to do 8 00 a. M. Measurement. Our stairs have disappeared and been replaced with some wind blown snow. Gorgeous sight, though. Crews are trying to clear the snow. Video shows one worker removing a large chunk of snow from a whoa. Thats a big chunk. Get back over to rob right now, latest on the conditions in the sierra, rob. Were going to see day three of the blizzard warning for the sierra, the good news, conditions should start to dial back a bit, as we head towards the afternoon. Blizzard warning active through 10 00 a. M. Tomorrow. But look at the snow totals so far. You saw sugar bowl, up to 52 inches of snow. More than four feet. And were expecting at least another two to three feet of snow for many locations above 6,000 feet. Some of the higher peaks could see four feet. The damaging wind gusts, the speeds starting to come down. We had wind gusts over 100 miles per hour. So, the two components of a blizzard warning, the high snow rates, low visibility, strong, sustained winds. That will start to calm down as we head into sunday evening, as that blizzard warning expires. Closer to home, we are tracking snow chances in our own bay area mountains. Well have a look at that coming up in a few minutes. You can track the snow and the rain while youre on the go by downloading our nbc bay area app. Just point your camera at the qr code on your screen. That will take you straight to our radar. Mount hamilton theres been snow at times. Colder temperatures tonight will drive the snow levels down, but at the same time, watching for thunderstorms and accumulating hail. That might look a bit like snow at times around the bay area. Lets recap our rain totals since thursday. Big winter so far, have been the Santa Cruz Mountains, three to four inches of rain have come down. Half inch to an inch and a half to san jose to the north bay. It is chilly outside. 52 degrees. South wind at 11. Just 49 degrees in walnut creek and a south wind at 22 miles per hour. And there you see the rain near San Francisco, a chilly a 50 degrees. 40s and 50s outside. Wind speeds not as strong as yesterday. We have not had that wind advisory for this evening or into your sunday forecast. Tomorrow morning begins with cold temperatures, 30s and 40s to start. Gives you an idea where the snow levels will be, close to 2,000, 3,000 feet tomorrow morn, and high temperatures tomorrow, mainly in the mid 50s around the bay area, from San Francisco, oakland, into san jose. So, a tour of the radar shows the most active weather at this hour. Santa cruz mountains, down towards morgan hill, special marine warning ongoing for strong, severe thunderstorms approaching the coast. Less intense weather around the central bay and north bay, but the air aloft is quite cold. This is adding to instability, the chance of seeing hail at times, thunder, or snow in the picture for elevations above 2,000 to 3,000 feet tonight, and that is the color coding youre seeing right now. A little more near the diab low range, Mount Hamilton, as well. And i think the higher peaks of the Santa Cruz Mountains could be cold enough for brief snow showers. During the day, less activity in the morning, then you add in the daytime heating. Sunday will look a lot like today, with the showers popping up. Rain totals will be less. Look at the chances of snow tomorrow. North bay mountain areas, around Mount Hamilton and off towards the diab low range, thats where well have the best chance. Monday is traendtrending drier. Our next opportunity, not as much as were going through right now, but mark it on the calendar for tuesday into wednesday. That appears to be the next window of opportunity.
