And so, i grew up watching them with him, and i always wanted to do something in that genre. And i auditioned for a version of this movie when i was 16. Jimmy really yeah. And they never made it jimmy so, you had this in your brain and youre like i had it. And i jimmy whatever happened to immaculate . Yeah. And so, ten years later, i decided to make it jimmy how do you do that do you call, like, an agent or something . Yeah, i called my agents, and i said, cant get this script out of my mind. What happened with it . It went in the turnaround somewhere. Jimmy good for you and i contacted the writer, and we rewrote it to match me as a 25yearold jimmy yeah and then i attached producers to it, i took it to a financier and jimmy you really worked hard i hired a director yeah, i produced it was the first thing i ever produced it was amazing [ cheers and applause jimmy congratulations. Thank you thank you. Whats really crazy whats really, really crazy is, i wrapped that movie on a friday and then on monday, i was filming anyone but you. Jimmy no way youre going from a scary movie to the most fun, friendly movie. Yeah. Jimmy how do we describe immaculate its a horror movie. Yeah, its like a a psychological horror film. Yeah jimmy yeah and who do you play in this . I play cecelia. Jimmy yes. Im a nun jimmy you play a nun i play a nun. It makes a lot of sense. Jimmy i think perfect. [ light laughter ] i think its perfect and you actually filmed this in italy. In italy. Yes, so she gets sent to a very obscure convent outside of rome and some crazy [ bleep ] starts to happen. Jimmy whos nicer than you so, theyve never been to europe my grannys dream was to go to italy. Shes never left the country before and so, i surprised them flew them there, and i let them be extras in the movie they were like little old nuns in there [ audience aws ] jimmy yeah, so theyre the grandmas are nuns in the movie. And then, i have a picture i go, do you have a picture of your grandma you sent me a bunch. I did jimmy this one stuck out its grandma getting a smoke break in between so, yes lll jimmy i just thought that was real i just thought that was a real picture. Its like all right this is my grandy shes iconic and she needed a smoke break in between takes. Jimmy yeah, of course. So, we went outside, and i had to capture how amazing she looked jimmy yeah [ light laughter ] in the film your character is pregnant, which meant that you have to wear a fake belly for a lot of it. Yes jimmy was that hard to act with that . You know, i actually really enjoyed it jimmy you did. I did, because i found out its a great place to put snacks lll jimmy you were hiding things in your i would put snacks in my belly. Its how did they come up with the idea for this well, its kind of an allstar team of all of the competition reality shows, because we were coming out of covid, so they had their pick. So basically like, the entire crew came up from australia that was on survivor. Jimmy thats what im talking about. So like rig people, send them up in 100foot trees. Then our show runner matt kunitz, he created fear factor. So theres that element. So if youve seen the trailers, people are getting bit by snakes jimmy yeah, yeah, yeah its and then our story team, sarah happel jackson, she was she ran the story for big brother for years. So we have this, like, allstar jimmy are you kidding me so theres all those elements if you like that kind of game jimmy i love that. Youll love it. And even if you dont, like, the cast is amazing. Theres 200 million split up into briefcases that are hidden all over this jungle island. And the banker has invited 13 guests, this depraved billionaire jimmy ooh. Hes invited these 13 guests to come and fight over these cases, and we just the first person got knocked out jimmy i know by the way no spoilers but, gosh, it was a great episode its great. Jimmy im already jumped im right into it. And you get to see a couple recognizable people on the show if you like reality competition, which i do. Boston rob from survivor. Boston rob is a genius he is a genius, the mastermind jimmy hes a mastermind. Yeah, the mafia don jimmy did he get in your head immediately and you go well, so heres the thing, so, you know, we have a noninterference policy on the show were just there to document whats going on, and make sure the cameras are in the right place and, you know, we have cameramen in the water, up in trees. We have drones we have cameras everywhere and i knew rob, because ive seen just about every episode of survivor ever jimmy yeah, me too but i couldnt spoil it i couldnt give that away. Jimmy oh, you cant tell everyone, hey, thats in case the other people didnt know. It would be up to them to find out. Jimmy thats part of his act. And put the target on his back jimmy yeah, hes like, oh, im a lawyer. So i had to keep it quiet but pretty early on, someone blew him up. Jimmy they knew it and now he hes out for blood. Jimmy yeah whats your connection to do you have a boston rob so my whole family is from boston and [ cheers and applause yeah, right . Im from pittsburgh, though. But, i mean, the whole familys from boston, and robs mother and my mother went to the same high school somerville one year apart jimmy what they were a year apart. Rob and i were born almost on the same day a year apart. And as it turns out, our parents got married on the same day in boston. Jimmy whoa [ audience ohs ] which is like, weird. Jimmy thats a bizarre connection yeah. Jimmy and then you also didnt you tell me that you tried to be a contestant on survivor so i was at a party jimmy just tell the story. Like 20 years ago. [ laughter ] 20 years ago, i was at a party, and i ran into someone, and said, oh what do you do . And they said, oh, i do casting for cbs, and theres a a show called survivor. and i go survivor . I go, i could win. [ light laughter ] jimmy me too and i started explaining my entire plan to them. I was like you know, i and they were like, okay, okay, okay why dont you make a tape . And so i made a dvd, but they were like, you cant be an actor, because theres too many actors who applied for survivor, and i was like, oh, all right. And to pay the bills at that time, i was working construction in l. A. So at 7 00 in the morning, i pick up this truck and i go and shovel sand and gravel, jackhammer, mix cement till 4 00 in the afternoon. So the guys at work film me jackhammering and, you know, mixing cement, you know. Jimmy youre like, im auditioning for survivor. and i had huge big beard and you know, top knot, you know and so i was joe the construction worker from pittsburgh, whose great grandmother survived the armenian genocide. So, you know, im a survivor im a descendant of a survivor and they were like, we want you on the show. Like, done, youre in the final round, we want you on the show. Jimmy yeah and when you read the lyrics, you realize just how much hiphop really is poetry. And the first cassette tape i ever bought was Queen Latifahs, black reign. It changed my world. Jimmy is that right . Yeah. Jimmy have you you ever got a chance to meet twice, but not really this is the story of my life, right . Its like i was i used to sell clothes downtown new york city. And one day Queen Latifah walked in the store. And this is, like, this is my moment, you know jimmy yeah and shes looking for a a sweatshirt, and i cant figure out how to address her. I dont know if im supposed to call her queen, which seemed a a little inappropriate, if i should call her latifah which seemed a little inappropriate. Jimmy how do you feel when you write these books and you get the response that you get, like, from a lot of your books are for young adults or children isnt it moving . Is it something you ever thought you could do and you go, like, oof . It is you know, when i show up to schools, or if i show up to Community Centers or libraries, you know, one of the things that young people always say is, man, i didnt know that a a writer could look like this. Right . That you could come in sneakers, and jeans, and tshirts, and tattoos, and long hair you could look like all of our favorite rappers, you could look like our athletes and still be a writer and be someone who uses language as a a way to free themselves and free the people around them, right . Language is a way to connect us all, right you dont have to look a a particular way, or button up, or put on a suit or be a a professor, right that you could be a kid from the neighborhood and express yourself in a way that just might give somebody else the opportunity to express themselves that way. Jimmy yeah and you know, and i think [ cheers and applause jimmy congratulations. Thank you, man. And i know you know this better than anybody, right . Youve gone through it yourself you are know what its like. I think there is no greater task than to give our children a fair swing through the art of letters. Jimmy yeah yeah.
