San jose still breezy and a temperature at 53 degrees. Its 52 in san mateo. Looking at your commute as you step out the door in antioch, expect upper 40s. Its going to be clear and breezy but then as we go throughout the day, sunshine. The temperatures will stay on the cool side. Mountain view reaching 66 degrees and 69 in morgan hill. Low 70s for concord. A cool start and a nice afternoon, and then we will talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. Thank you. The breaking news we are covering in maine. Another Community Forever changed. We are keeping our eye on what has happened there, just another tragedy we have. Two shootings that happened about four miles apart. One happened near a Bowling Alley. Authorities say up to 20 people are dead following the shootings that happened at a bar and that Bowling Alley i mentioned, it happened in lewistno. Up to 50 people were injured. That tragedy unfolded last night, and many schools and offices are shutdown with residents being told to stay home if at all possible with their doors locked. The two shooting locations is about four miles apart. One was a Bowling Alley and the other, a restaurant. We are keeping our eye out for new video as well. The person on the screen is the person of interest, and new developments are coming in by the minute. We want to go to brie jackson right now. What else are you learning about the tragedy . We are learning more about robert card. He has approximately 20 years of military service and was reported to have been committed to a Mental Health facility for two weeks over the last summer. Up to 15 to 20 people were killed and dozens injured. The shootings happened in two locations, a Bowling Alley and restaurant. The fbi is assisting Maine State Police with the investigation. There are multiple scenes, multiple hospitals and followups, and a lot of witnesses we are speaking with, and a lot of leads. Officers named the 40yearold robert card as a person of interest in the attack. He is a trained firearms instructor and believed to be an army reserve, and believed to hear voices. As the search for card and answers continues, people in the community await word on their family and friends. Pray for the families, and pray for these victims. God, things have got to be changed got to change. We have to start doing better. Another mass shooting in america. Another community devastated. We spoke by phone to maines governor and several represents of congress that represent maine and they offered full support of the community. We are talking all the latest developments on the story, and later on the today show they will have more. Israel intensifying its war on hamas. The world is now preparing for what is next. What our president and the United Nations are saying this morning. The United Nations is having a emergency meeting in two hours, and they are focusing on the escalating war between israel and hamas that has civilians on both sides stuck in the middle. There was a raid in the northern part of the gaza strip. The Israeli Military provided us with this video and they say its tanks. They hit antitank Missile Launch post to prepare the battlefield. This is not israelis full scale assault, but one is coming and only israel will know when and how that will happen. President biden asked israel to pause the defensive in order to allow humanitarian aid for the civilians of gaza to get in, and if International Calls for a ceasefire are any indication, the president s ask is not going to happen. Immediate change. Just alone in the bombing, just an opening would create hope for my fellow doctors and nurses. People are simply will die. Even before israels targeted raid today, Palestinian Health officials said more than 7,000 people were killed in gaza, and in israel 1,400 were killed, mostly regular people, not shoulders. We will continue to look at what is happening today as we suspect things will start to ramp up. Overnight a deadly pedestrian crash in the east bay. This happened just before 10 30 last night at 5 30 in richmond on bay view. The pedestrian was running across the interstate when that accident happened. Traffic was impacted for a short time and all lanes are opened this morning. Sam bankmanfried may take the stand in his own defense as he tries to avoid decades in prison. The key word is may. May, right. We are getting that language from his lawyers who in written submissions from the judge say things like should our client testify. They are putting on a condition. We cant say if he will testify until he gets up on the stand. His defense was barred from using his lawyers told him to do things. So many lawyers, and they want to keep their clients off the witness stand and its not always the best idea to testify in your own defense. Its not, because you dont just have your lawyers asking questions, but the other side. But he may not have a whole lot to lose. Sbf already testified against him, and Caroline Ellison told the Court Everything bankmanfried did, and she was his former girlfriend, and his former best friend testified against him. Thats one of the cooler temperatures i am seeing on the map across the bay area. Its clear. The wind is light. The temperature will hold steady here in the low 40s, and then slowly start to warm up even with that sunshine today. By noon we are at 62 degrees. Yeah, 62 and still wearing a sweater. We are only going to reach a high of 69 for today in san jose. 70 in east san jose. We do make a nice recovery for the middle of the afternoon, and thats about 3 00 to 4 00 before the temperatures, once again, start to dip before the wind picks up. 67 in redwood city, in san mateo and in San Francisco. About the same in the north bay, upper 60s for napa and sonoma. We will see the temperatures on repeat. We dont have anymore chances of rain in the forecast at least through next week, but possibly by next sunday. This is stretching it way out. We could see a system that is going to be approaching the bay area. Our temperatures warm up just slightly, even though we are not seeing a lot of rain, there will be a couple cold fronts coming through reinforcing the air we are feeling. Friday, there will be another cold front coming in that will keep our temperatures here in the upper 60s. A nice and mild weekend. Slight warming for the middle of next week with upper 70s, and then we bring it back to the low and mid70s for the middle of next week. Overall, looking good as you make weekend plans, but make sure you are ready for the cool evenings and chilly mornings with highs headed for about 70 degrees. In San Francisco, about the same. Yeah, feeling cooler now that the front that moved through yesterday is to the south and the cold air is settling in as the winds calm down. Take a look where we are beginning, especially in the north bay. We are seeing mid to upper 40s for much of the trivalley, the east bay and San Francisco is now at 45 degrees. A cool start in martinez. We are at 47 right now. We will have temperatures in the 40s for the next few hours, and plenty of sunshine. It will be slow to warmup. And just as fast as it warms up, it cools down to get ready for the crisp nights and Early Mornings with mild days. Mike, you were looking at the bay bridge. Yeah, kari, you see the traffic is moving smoother but jamming up on the incline. Folks, on the San Francisco side speeds are moving better because they did clear the lanes on the claremont street offramp, and the lanes are open. The speed is still slow approaching the Treasure Island tunnel. No metering lights registering yet. I circled the slowing that was there just for a couple minutes approaching the dublin interchange, but looks like they picked up the roadwork early. Thats great news. The shots were first fired now a little more than 12 hours ago in maine. 15 to 20 people are dead with 50 plus more people injured. That shooting happened in two locations, a bar and a Bowling Alley four miles apart. Many families in lewiston are living out a nightmare, including the father of one man that works at that bar who has still not heard from his son. If you felt my gut right now, i feel like i am squashed with a vice, and i dont know, telling you the truth, what kind of night this is going to be from now until tomorrow when i wake up to the true facts that my son is dead and i know hes dead, i know it as well as i know i am standing here telling you because hes not here and hes not at any of the hospitals, and hes not running the streets. He would have called us, because hes a manager, so i know he was there. Authorities are telling people in lewiston that the surrounding areas need to stay at home and have their doors locked. Its a frightening time for these people. A vehicle tied to the shooting has been found. We get the latest from sam brock in lewiston. At this moment communities in central maine are under shelter in place orders, and that includes where i am standing. Auburn and lisbon, three or 4,000 people are under a shelter in place, stay in your home orders, as this manhunt continues in chaotic fashion. You see Law Enforcement presence here blocking off access. Down here at the bottom, its the sports bar and grill and thats one of the places the shooting happened, a man came in and shot and killed between 15 and 20 people. That exact number is still being verified. Two locations, a Bowling Alley and the bar are four to five miles apart. The chronology itself, not clear itself. We do know that Law Enforcement right now is searching for a man by the name of robert card. Hes considered a person of interest. Police have not called him a suspect as of yet, but they are searching for him as the suspect in this case is somebody with a semiautomatic rifle during teen night. They were playing cornhole in the bar down the street there, and their lives were interrupted and changed forever. We have a presence from the fbi, local state and federal Law Enforcement. Mainly 100 investigators out right now searching for card. The last known indication was when they located his car. We are looking for an update of where things stand, and perhaps its summed up with the owner of the bar said this makes no sense to anybody, and, of course, their lives changed for generation to come. Unfortunately, we have heard these things before. Now they are calling for action and they say they want to see it on the federal level. Governor gavin newsom taking to social media, pointing out that maine does not ban assault weapons and does not require permits to carry a gun in public or require a background check on gun sales. He adds Congress Needs to take action on gun control. San francisco supervisor, katharine stephanie, is outspoken when it comes to stricter gun laws in the city having pushed for legislation to ban firearms in public spaces. She said this tragedy could have been prevented. We need legislators with a background. Knowing as a society we can do better than this if we put into place strong gun safety laws. California has some of the strictest gun safety laws in the country, however some laws have been challenged in recent years in the court. A week ago a District Court judge ruled the decades weapons ban is unconstitutional for a second time. That law bans ownership of 50 specific brands firearms. At this time assault weapons restrictions do remain in effect. The same District Court also issued a decision invalidating californias large magazine ban, and that is under appeal as well. Police arrested 18yearold jason will jeanda of antioch. The 16yearold from brentwoods Liberty High School died from his injuries. This week parents at neighboring Freedom High School expressed fears about a retaliation of the shooting, and Oakley Police say the investigation is ongoing. 5 39 right now. Developers are laying out the exact game plan for the as new stadium in vegas even though the as move still needs to be league approved. Yesterday vegas stadium Board Members heard a complete presentation on the plan. Construction is set to start in april of 2025, and wrap up in early 2028 near the tropicana hotel. Remember also this weekend, highway 37 will be closed from vallejo to novato, this is your reroute all weekend long as they duty roadwork that will be a factor for highway 37 westbound. He has been against it in the past, and a reporter from abc who asked him about it when he was first nominated as speaker was shouted down by his party members. The judge in his civil fraud case was partisan, and so too, was the person sitting next to him, and most people took that to mean the law clerk. Today in the bays bob redell takes us for a tour on the island. This is the main part of alcatraz where many of the inmates were housed. Alcatraz started out as a fort and then turned into a military prison and then a maximum Security Federal penitentiary, and then it became a tourist attraction. 50 years ago today alcatraz opened up for the first time for public tours. By and large it was a wonderful place to grow up and it was a lowcrime neighborhood. She lived on alcatraz as a child while her father worked into a prison, and she believes turning the island into a National Park has awakened americans surrounding prisons. There were many series about what we should do with the island and one was to make it a resort, tear it down and make it into a rich persons, you know, enclave. So this was really the best solution, i thought, at the time, and still do. In 1962, a loud siren awoke her after guards discovered the makeshift dummies in the beds of three prisoners who tunnelled out of their cells and escaped off the island. Guys that come here are high profile because of their behavior, and when you leave a prison like alcatraz, you take that behavior with you and tend to be noticeable. No bodies in the bay, and no trace on land, no evidence on land, and no evidence on land is by far the biggest clue that they probably never came out of the water. Fortunately not behind the bars but here as a tourist on alcatraz, bob redell, today in the bay. We are thankful for that. Have you seen the movie, escape from alcatraz yeah. Its great. I think i went twice in the first year with family visiting, and its good to do the self guided tour with the audio, and they have also a tour and you can stay overnight. It was once a National Park. Lets move on to the forecast. We have a clear view of alcatraz. Its going to be cool but at least it will be sunny. The cold front has moved on. Swept through the bay area yesterday and brought a few spotty showers as it passed yesterday evening, and now we can see the clouds well to the south of us as the cold air is now settling in. Take a look at the north bay, napa dipping to 40 degrees as you step out the door. You may also think, okay, am i going to turn on the heater . Maybe not yet because we make a nice recovery for the afternoon. You can open the blinds and let the sunlight in today, but you want to make sure you stay warm. Take a look at concord. We are going at 46 to start out the day at 8 00, to noontime at 63, and reach in the upper 60s as we continue with sunshine today. In milpitas, 69 degrees for a high. Mostly upper 60s and low 70s today which is cooler than normal with livermore headed for 66 degrees. Oakland reaching 69. 68 degrees in palo alto. Daly city, 65 degrees. Also 65 in downtown San Francisco. The marina district, 62. 66 in mill valley, and upper 60s in santa rosa and novato. I dont see anymore changes in the forecast, through at least next week. I am stretching out the model to ten days, and it shows the approach of rain heading through next weekend, possibly by next sunday. In the meantime, we will enjoy the crisp, cool mornings and mild afternoons feeling like fall and sunshine in the forecast extending through next week.
