Its going to be cool to start but then warm up and be a comfortable afternoon. We have a range in temperatures that will change as we go from morning to day. Walnut creek starts out at 53 degrees. Youll want a jacket for at least the next few hours. Then once that sun comes out, temperatures start to warm up and well be in the upper 60s throughout much of the morning, headed for the mid to upper 70s. Here is a look at our highs, reaching 71 in San Francisco, 73 in oakland and 78 in martinez. Morgan hill today up to 80 degrees, and 77 in novato. Then for tomorrow, temperatures take a tumble and its going to feel like fall, especially in the Early Morning hours as we get more clouds and a few of us will get some rain. It looks like mainly the north bay will have the best chance. Then we continue with cool weather for the rest of the week with 60s in the forecast. Thats for our afternoon highs. Ill talk about the mornings and how cool it gets coming up. Mike, youre starting with a backup out of oakland. Were talking about the bay bridge, but i want to give folks reference. Smooth moving hov lanes and visible moment. We had an early stoppage for most of these lanes and now it looks like theyve sped up the metering lights. Travel across the span is much more smooth as well. Upper eastshore freeway, highway 37 and 4, all typical recovery. Here, 242 southbound, the earlier crash has moved everything to the center divide. Its a distraction but not a problem. We are looking at this corner and the cutthrough. Both are about the same drive, given the slowing on 242. The rest of Contra Costa County moves nicely. Alameda county eastbound 580 still has construction crews scheduled to be there perhaps another half hour until they clear that countercommute toward the dublin interchange. In just a few hours, a bay area pilot will face a judge on 83 counts of attempted murder. This is for allegedly trying to turn off an engine of a San Franciscobound plane midflight. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us from the newsroom with what we know about why. We were told that the suspect appeared to have some sort of mental breakdown. What hes accused of doing is something that should only be attempted in a total emergency. This happened on a horizon air flight to San Francisco. This is the man were talking about. Horizon is owned by alaska airlines. Now, the flight was coming to San Francisco from everett, washington. The man is Joseph Emerson from pleasant hill. Hes a pilot, off duty at the time, sitting in the extra seat in the cockpit. Passengers said the plane started going down fast, making several sharp turns and they heard an announcement over the speakers about an Emergency Landing. Inside the cockpit were told that emerson tried to turn the planes engines off, using what our nbc news aviation analyst says is only to be used in an emergency. They have what they call fire handles, thandles, they call them, on the roof of the cockpit, that you grab, you turn, and you shut down. That actually shuts the fuel off, as well as turning the engine off, so its used for an emergency situation, if you have an engine fire or something along those lines. Its a quick way of shutting down the engines. This jump seat rider may have tried to use those emergency thandles to do it. Reporter horizon is owned by alaska airlines. Emerson was subdued by crew members, then escorted to the back of the plane. Upon landing, emerson was taken into custody. The faa is investigation, but the fbi has already come out saying this does not appear to be connected to any current world events. Its worth noting that pilots over the age of 40 have to undergo medical evaluations every six months. They have to disclose their Mental Health issues, they have to disclose what kinds of medications theyre taking. However, full mental evaluations are not part of that physical. It happened last night off the coast of germany. One of the ships from britain is believed to have sunk. The rescuers saved two sailors. Everyone onboard the other ship based in the bahamas survived. Theres no immediate word on what led to that accident. Theres some relief this morning in israel, after the release of two additional hostages, but at least 200 others remain captive. This is new video of the pair arriving at the tel aviv hospital last night. In a post on telegram, hamas says they decided to release the pair due to compelling humanitarian reasons. With her daughter translating for her in english, lifshitz spoke about what it was like when she was taken. My mom is saying that she was taken on the back of a motorbike, with her legs on one side, that she was taken through the plowed fields with the men in front on one side and one behind her, and that while she was being taken, she was beat with sticks. Mostly upper 70s here across much of the inland east bay, with concord headed for 79 degrees. 75 in fremont, and oakland reaching a high of 73 degrees. It will be 73 in redwood city, Half Moon Bay 68 degrees, and mid to upper 60s for San Francisco, 70 in the mission district, and up to 77 in sonoma, novato and in santa rosa. We do have changes ahead. In fact, this will be the warmest day well see in quite a while. Youve probably seen that with the sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen. Theres a cold front moving through the pacific northwest. Theres a little bit of rain associated with it. By the time it gets here, the rain is going to be very light and spotty, and the north bay will have the best chance of seeing that late tomorrow afternoon into the evening. And then as we go toward thursday, its clear with another cold front dropping in on friday. Once again, only slight rain chances. Look at our temperature trend. Brentwood will be in the upper 70s today, but only upper 60s tomorrow. And that cool weather continues, at least through the start of next week. The pilot, 44yearold Joseph Emerson of pleasant hill, is now facing 83 counts of attempted murder. Authorities say he was off duty and sitting in the extra seat in the cockpit. About a half hour into the horizon flight from everett, washington, sunday, he tried to turn off the engines, but the onduty pilots subdued him. Horizon is owned by alaska airlines. Passengers say the plane quickly deskrenlded, making several sharp turns and they were told the plane was making an Emergency Landing in portland. He ended up in zip ties in the back of the plane. Your mind cant help but assume that something larger, like what were reading about in the news, is happening. A source tells nbc bay area the suspect had a mental breakdown. Happening today, labor leaders are hoping to put the breaks on expanding the Robotaxi Service in San Francisco. Teamsters are organizing a rally outside a cruise headquarters. Its timed with the release of the latest Earnings Report from cruises Parent Company, general motors. Driverless taxi opponents are protesting ongoing safety concerns. Theyre also stressing that more taxis will mean fewer human drives. Cruises chief executive said that safety is his companys top priority.
