We begin with breaking news, new details overnight in an accident involving a selfdriving cruise taxi in San Francisco. A female pedestrian suffered lifethreatening injuries. It happened late last night at 5th street and market near the powell street b. A. R. T. Station. At the time, Police Reportedly suggested a second car may be involved. Overnight cruise representatives showed our Investigative Unit bigad shaban their video, and he tells us the video appears to confirm the claim from cruise that its car did not strike the victim initially, and it it was actually another car that did. A black sedan, which then left the scene. The video has not been released. Police last night would not confirm if that second car was found, but cruise claims its car had started a hard brake before making impact. Our thom jensen is in San Francisco. Com, or take our app with you wherever you stream. To the east bay, two fires yesterday had a lot of next nervous as those flames got really close to the brush, getting close to homes as well. A reminder, were still in fire season and the danger is real. We have Team Coverage on the ongoing threat. Meteorologist kari hall is tracking the warming temperatures. First, today in the bays bob redell is live for us in the east bay with new warnings to those residents. Reporter yes, and even though were in october, we are still in the height of the fire season, so even though the temperatures right now, as im standing in the east bay, the temperatures are cool, the weather is still prime, unfortunately, for wildfire activity, especially later this week as kari has been mentioning, temperatures in the east bay are supposed to rise to the upper 80s, possibly the low 90s. This was the scene yesterday afternoon along outlook avenue in oakland, where a fire burned the hillside near several homes and unfortunately set fire to one of the homes. The man who lives in the house was not hurt but tells us he and his neighbors had concerns about the weeds on the hillside for quite some time. He says, ironically, the owner of the hillside had cut down the weeds yesterday just before the fire. Oakland fire says the cause is under investigation but confirmed that, yes, workers were clearing out brush on that hillside prior to the fire. Thats why there was such a fire, because the weeds had grown so high. I was just finishing lunch and i look out the window, expecting to see blue skies, and all i saw was brown. September, october, and sometimes even early november can be some of our most dangerous times. Its definitely not the time to let our guard down. Reporter this was the scene, also, yesterday. Another wildfire along a hillside in martinez. This one burned three acres and came close to homes, but they were never caught on fire. Contra costa county fire says that fire also under investigation. Reporting live in the east bay, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you. A lot of people, they equate the summer months with the heat and fire, but this is our fire season. This is when we see them typically. We havent had the diablo winds or the santa ana winds that can fuel some of those fires and cause things to spread quickly. So we are going to also go back to summerlike temperatures. Some of the valleys will reach into the 90s and the coast and bay will be warming up as well. Dry and breezy conditions means an elevated fire danger, especially for the hills. We start the warming trend today, but its still going to be fairly mild for the afternoon. Mid to low 80s, and tomorrow we start to see 90s in the interior valleys. In just a few hours, history will be made in washington when the woman tapped to fill the seat of californias late senator Dianne Feinstein is sworn in. Today in the bays brie jackson joins us live in washington with a preview. A lot of people are calling this a big landmark moment. Reporter thats right, good morning, laura. Laphonza butler is the first openly lesbian senator to serve california and the states second black female senator. Her appointment makes good on a longheld promise from governor gavin newsom to appoint a black woman. Butler is set to be sworn in by her longtime ally, Vice President Kamala Harris, at around noon pacific time. Shes currently the president of the emilys list super pac in washington, but she formerly served as an adviser to harris 2020 president ial campaign. Right now butler lives in maryland and she owns a home in los angeles, which he is expected to make her permanent residence. Governor newsom is following through on his longheld promise to send a black woman to the u. S. Senate, and speaking to reporters yesterday in San Francisco, he expanded on what led him to appoint butler. The ability to create a dynamic on the outside that moves the needle on the inside. Few people as skilled as Laphonza Butler to understand that push pull between those on the outside and how to move things in terms of setting an agenda and actually accomplishing something. So i think shes in many ways more qualified than the vast majority of folks in a lot of elected offices. Reporter emilys list is a Popular Action Committee that raises money to help elect democratic female candidates who support abortion rights. Butler is the mother of one child whom she shares with her domestic partner. Meanwhile, final farewells to the woman butler replaces in the senate, the late senator Dianne Feinstein. Those farewells continue. She will lie in state at San Francisco city hall tomorrow from 9 00 a. M. Until 7 00 p. M. , and the public is also welcome to attend senator feinsteins funeral on thursday afternoon on the steps of city hall. It was originally private, and is now open to the public. People will also be welcome to sign a book of condolences. Feinstein died thursday night at the age of 90. She was the longestserving woman in the u. S. Senate. So blue angels yesterday made a pass over San Francisco will landing at oakland airport. Were starting a warming trend today as we are looking at low 70s in the city. It will reach 77 in san mateo, dublin, livermore, up to 83 degrees, and well see mid80s for santa rosa and novato, and up to 82 for this afternoon in san jose. We are looking at the bay bridge, a pretty standard pattern here, a lot of slowing through contra costa county, heading into this span itself. Now, across the san mateo bridge, we have the alert on the peninsula side, west 92 slows from the decline down through foster city. That crash blocking a majority of lanes west 92 at highway 101. Were talking about 90s coming back after a nice little break over the weekend. Its a clear start this morning. Take a look at our trend. Were going from nice and cool this morning with some mid60s to reaching into the 80s today. And these temperatures were expecting this afternoon will be about whats normal for this time of year. Weve been a little spoiled after that break over the weekend and temperatures in the 70s. But today were going to reach up to 84 in cupertino and los gatos, and East San Jose headed for 86 degrees. Well see some mid80s as well for pleasanton, upper 80s for antioch, and in hayward expect a high of 81 degrees. San mateo up to 80 today, and Half Moon Bay in the upper 60s, while in the Mission District expect it to reach up to about 73. As you take a look at the sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen, well have warmer days ahead. Were starting today with a high of 85 in napa and 88 in ukiah. As we go through the forecast, High Pressure is going to ramp up across the region and its going to take a while, but we are going to see the return of rain for the first part of next week. Our next chance of showers will be next tuesday and wednesday, but until then, well have to deal with some serious heat. Weve already had a couple of storm systems across the Pacific Northwest that brought a decent amount of rain. For the next one, were looking at about a quarter inch of rain or less for most of us, but, of course, that fire danger ramps up as we get the hotter temperatures, the lower humidity, as well as the breezy winds. As we take a look at brentwood, what to expect over the next several days, were going from mid80s to low 90s tomorrow, to mid90s for thursday into saturday. If you do have weekend outdoor plans, i think sunday is going to be the most comfortable day, but its still going to be pretty warm all the way up until that next storm system approaches early next week. So we are going to have some hot temperatures. For fleet week, look at how warm its going to be in San Francisco, reaching the mid80s on thursday. Mike, youre tracking an alert for highway 92. This is affecting the bridge, the backup from the decline here passing foster city boulevard. The crash is around highway 92 at 101, so im hoping the tow truck they need to remove three vehicles, im hoping the tow trucks can jump on at foster city boulevard and head over. If youre in the area of foster city, take surface streets over to the freeway itself, then jump on 101 where everything should be clear. The dumbarton bridge is a much better drive than west 92. This is pro skateboarder chico brenes, raised in nicaragua during a revolution. The violence hit home when his mother was shot during the war. She survived, but decided it was time to get out. After crossing the border, brenes landed in San Francisco, speaking no english. But thats when he discovered something new. My grandma was the first one who got me a board from toysrus. My board was always everywhere i went, man, it was with me. He was only about 9 years old. Eventually the Skateboard Company took notice of him and asked him to go pro. Reporter a woman sustained lifethreatening injuries, after she was trapped under a cruise driverless car. But coming up in a live report, why it might not be the Autonomous Vehicles fault. The crucial move happening today that may breaking right now at 6 30, a woman critically injured, after being struck by at least one car in San Francisco. A driverless taxi remains at the scene. Shes in Critical Condition right now, this is after an accident involving a cruise selfdriving taxi. Some new video overnight from the company and viewed by nbc bay area is adding a new set of questions about exactly what happened. Today in the bays thom jensen is live for us in San Francisco. Where do things stand this morning with that investigation . Reporter good morning. What we do know, a lot of it is coming from cruise right now. We have not heard a lot back from San Francisco police department. But we do know that cruise provided our Investigative Unit at nbc bay area video from that car, the embedded video cameras they say showed a black sedan hit that woman first and catapulted her right in front of the Autonomous Vehicle. It happened at 5th and Market Street near the powell b. A. R. T. Station, a San Francisco Fire Rescue Team responded and used the jaws of life to rescue the woman trapped under the rear axle of the cruise Autonomous Vehicle and she was taken by ambulance to sf general with lifethreatening injuries. There were no witnesses. Because of the nature of the Autonomous Vehicles, theres no driver to speak with, and in this case there were no passengers inside the vehicle when rescuers arrived. There were also no witnesses on the street. All we know is that the victim was found beneath the vehicle and rescued. Reporter however, there was that video rolling in the av, and cruise told nbc bay area the initial impact was severe and launched the pedestrian directly in front of the av. The av then braked aggressively to minimize the impact. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene, and at the request of police, the av was kept in place. Our heartfelt concern and focus is the wellbeing of the person who was injured, and we are actively working with police to help identify the responsible driver. The nbc bay area Investigative Unit, as i said, did view that video, and it seems to show exactly what cruise said in that statement. We do know that the woman is in Critical Condition right now. We reached out to sfpd but they have not gotten back to us to tell us whether or not they have found the driver of that vehicle who fled the scene. Were live in San Francisco, thom jensen, today in the bay. Critical condition. Lets hope she recovers. Thank you, thom. We first learned of the accident, we sent out an alert through our nbc bay area app. You can download it, that way you can stay informed with the latest breaking news. A south bay tragedy leaving many Unanswered Questions after two children drowned at a south san jose daycare. A third child remains hospitalized. It all happened yesterday morning at the happy happy daycare, which operates out of a home on fleetwood drive near almaden lake park. Authorities say somehow the children ended up in the homes swimming pool. Its not clear if there was a locked gate. A search by our Investigative Unit did not find any license issued for a Daycare Center at this address. So far, prosecutors have not announced criminal charges, but that investigation is still ongoing. One person is in custody, after a stabbing in front of the concord b. A. R. T. Station. It happened last night at about 7 30. B. A. R. T. Says the male victim suffered injuries not considered lifethreatening. Its still not clear if the victim knew their attacker or what may have led up to the stabbing. A live look on capitol hill this morning. This is where history will be made. Vice president Kamala Harris will swear in Laphonza Butler to fill the late Dianne Feinsteins senate set. They will be the first black and out lesbian to serve. Shes never Held Public Office before. Most recently shes been living out of state, but maintaining her home in southern california, which allows her to meet the qualifications. Shes already announced plans to reregister here. Tomorrow and thursday in San Francisco, mourners will be able to pay their respects to the late senator Dianne Feinstein. Her fun hal will take place at 1 00 p. M. On the steps of city hall. The ceremony was originally private but now is open to the public. Mourners say San Francisco has lost a real icon. She was such a fantastic person and a great leader. She really was. She did a lot for our city. Our coverage of senator feinstein continues over the next few days. We will be Live Streaming her funeral on thursday, both on air, as well as online. 6 35. Jury selection begins today in the criminal trial of Sam Bankmanfried. The former head of ftx. Scott mcgrew has been following the case. This is all about cryptocurrency and its interesting, its something that juries dont normally have to deal with. It would be a tough one to explain. Its complicated, crypto is, but prosecutors will likely just frame the alleged crime for stealing. Stealing is simple for people to understand, whether its cars or diamond or cars, or cryptocurrency. Sam bankmanfried accused of stealing billions from the company he founded. Hes pleaded not guilty to seven counts of fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors say he took depositors money for himself and moved some to a Different Company he owned and committed fraud by trying to cover the whole thing up. Ftx at one point, youll remember, was a huge company. It had its name on a basketball arena, commercial endorsements, including steph curry as well. But then it all came crashing down. It kind of took cryptocurrency with it. There were a lot of us who had been doubting this idea of invented money from the beginning. But the alleged fraud really hurt the industry in general and trust in cryptocurrency. Exactly. Nobody trusts it anymore. So jury selection is today. And this is interesting, Michael Lewis new book about that disaster comes out today as well. And, of course, bay area guy, he wrote about the big short, he wrote about the blind side. He spent months with bankmanfried before and after the charges. Hes mentioned that bankmanfried considered offering donald trump millions of dollars not to run for president. Nothing ever came of that. To be honest with you, ive not read this book yet. Its out today. But early critics say lewis feels kind of gentle on bankmanfried, that maybe they got too close. One reviewer writing, lewis had in the months leading up to the disaster a front row seat, from which he apparently could see nothing. Thats interesting. Big news happening there. Thank you, scott. 6 37. Happening today, san jose leaders are expected to vote on creating the citys own power utility. In august, Council Members first presented that proposal to create san jose power. Supporters argue pg e is too backlogged and has a lack of money to focus on future service in the south bay. Opponents argue the move is a risky one that may leave taxpayers with a huge bill. If approved, the city would operate power for two lines set to be completed in 2028. Yeah, but its getting later and later. Sometimes its after the show, we have this glorious sunrise, at least i can enjoy it in the evening, the sunsets as well. As we take a look at what youre feeling as you get ready to head out the door, its in the mid40s in parts of the north bay, as well as the south county. Mid50s elsewhere for the peninsula. Then as we take a look at the trend for today, it starts out cool in morgan hill at about 50 degrees, the kids may step out wearing a jacket, but look at how warm its going to be at pickup time. So make sure the name is on the tag. They will not be wearing it later on today, as those temperatures heat up. Its going to be a drastic change from what we had over the weekend to what we are going to see today and the next few days, as our inland areas, especially, get some really warm temperatures. Well talk more about that and whats ahead in a few minutes. Mike says you may want to avoid the san mateo bridge. Yeah, the backup continues to build, gradually. Two of the three lanes are blocked right now, so coming over the incline, down the decline into foster city, if youre looking for an alternate to the san mateo bridge westbound, heading toward 101, you should use the dumbarton bridge. That is jammed up and we dont know when they can get the appropriate number of tow trucks to clear west 92. This crash southbound 880 should be clearing in hayward, and no other major slowdowns, although the south bay build is on. The bay bridge had metering lights turned on about 5 38. Early slowing in walnut creek has built into lafayette, and slowing toward the caldecott tunnel as well. No problems toward the maze. We have the volume continuing to build. Thank you. Right now at 6 43, lets move over toward the east bay, as we get a look at pleasant hill. Its a cool start, only in the low 50s, but we are going to see a nice warming trend at noon at 75, and were headed for the mid80s today. A much warmer forecast ahead. Ill have more on that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. And, unfortunately, we continue to see a slowing trend for the san mateo bridge, once you pass the highrise at the top of the screen it really starts to jam up toward foster city. The alert continues for westbound 92, two out of your three lanes are blocked by a noninjury crash, as crews are still not there to hook up those three vehicles. It is going to be difficult for my republican friends to keep calling President Biden feeble while he continues to take speaker mccarthys lunch money in every negotiation. Much of the north bay reaching the mid80s, napa headed for 85 degrees. Over the next ten days, san jose going from low 80s to mid90s. Well see the peak of the heat on thursday and friday. It happened last night at 5th street and market near the powell street b. A. R. T. Station. At the time, Police Reportedly suggested a second car may be involved. Overnight cruise representatives showed our Investigative Unit the video and it appears to support the claim from cruise that it did not strike the pedestrian initially. A black sedan left the scene. The video has not been released. Police would not confirm if the second car was ever found, but cruise claims its car had started a hard brake before making impact.
