And they were like theyd be a few more fans. So, it just gave me an opportunity to, like, i dont know, to give stuff to people. cause ive always been a performer. Jimmy yeah a song maker. Jimmy yeah but once you record it, once you make it, once you have a a project, it just feels different. Jimmy youre always doing new. And every time you come on, im so happy and honored that you come on our show to announce stuff and talk about stuff but youre doing this new festival in ghana yes jimmy next year its called the black star line festival yeah. Jimmy talk to me about that yeah, im very, very excited. Yeah january 6th, we are going to west africa, to accra, ghana, and putting on a very, like, important event. And jimmy what inspired you to do it . Thats funny that you ask i would love to talk a little bit about it, yeah well, in the 1920s and actually in 1922, the u. S. Government shut down a very, very important vessel and means of connection for black people there was this thing called the black star line. It was created by Marcus Garvey and invested in by just, you know, common black people around on the east coast and basically, they created a connection via trade with this giant fleet of ships that he owned so, he had these ocean liners that would go between the u. S. And all the Black Islands and the continent. And it created like a network or connection for black people globally and he had a lot of, like, ideas about black interconnectedness and so, im inspired and theres a lot of people that are inspired by his works, his ideas, and also just the idea of global blackness and being in connection. And so, were giving a were giving it an opportunity im very excited about it. Jimmy thats january 6th [ cheers and applause its a lot to its a giant thing to put on, a festival. Yeah. Its something im very, very excited about. Jimmy good for you as you can tell jimmy yeah, no, i like it. But january 6th, like you said, the black star line festival we invite black people from everywhere, from not just from the u. S but from the uk and from the islands. And you know, were everywhere so, we invite you to come to accra to be in a space of peace, of connectivity, of music, of art. And just and just love. And i implore you to look up the black star line and to and to just, you know, get in tune jimmy yeah [ cheers and applause thats why i love you. Youre always doing Something Like that. Youre always giving back and always making people think as well i love this. This is the the highs the lows. Yes jimmy now, i like this because, now, youre youre doing a thing now with every song that comes out, every project that comes out, you put a different piece of artwork with it. Yeah, yeah. So, this is the this is the cover art, i guess, for for the highs the lows. But its also a photograph by yannis davy guibinga, who is a a photographer from gabon, west africa. And i met him in my travels as ive been doing this art stuff and kind of, like, collaborating with more artists. But, yeah, ive been trying to figure out ways to to make my music translate in more ways, you know what i mean i feel like i talk about sometimes things that are really heavy or very detailed. Jimmy yeah and some people are visual learners and so, ive been getting way more into film and into, you know, the the visual arts and working with artists like yannis or when i did jimmy where do you meet these artists . They come to you i i meet a lot of them through social media so luckily, we live in the future like the jetsons [ laughter ] and we can just you just meet people online but i met the first artist i did this with, nilo bionga, i met in ghana in january. And shes a painter and architect that has lived all over and had a lot of different experiences. And me and her had some conversations about our art. How it can be commodified. How important it can be as a a tool or a weapon and it kind of rolled out into this thing where now every time i make a song, you know, im going to make sure that people can receive it in as many ways as possible. And making something thats sustainable like, you know, a living piece of art is the type of stuff that im into. Jimmy yeah isnt that kind of thats awesome [ cheers and applause because its kind of i love that, because its almost like what you were saying when you first started out and youre opening up for Childish Gambino thats a big gig for you and youre like, but i got to give out you got to give out your mixtape. Was that the acting was that your plan . Um, not really. I mean, when i was a little kid, i used to me and my twin brother used to make little skits here and there. But i never thought i could actually do it or be on a stage like here. Jimmy really yeah. Jimmy and how did you hear about the audition just like any other audition i got a self tape. Really, whats interesting, is in the final audition, they brought us into this room, and i seen how the camera was just on a tripod right there. And i know i had to do something different, right and in the first episode, if you guys have seen it, my character is looking into the camera like, whats up, guys. So, i took the camera, and i picked it up and i pointed it to myself. Im like, yo, whats up these are my rez dog friends. And i showed taika and all of them jimmy yeah they really got it involved with my scene. I think thats a big reason why i got it jimmy how did you get the guts to do that in an audition i dont know. I had to do something different. Jimmy yeah i had to do something different. Jimmy and paulina, you wanted to be an action star. Yes jimmy is that true yes, thats true. Jimmy and i know that you are really into sports did you coach hockey or you do coach hockey yes, i coached at a native tournament called alberta native hockey provincials, and i got to coach the alexis novice team. And that was pretty fun. Back home in my reserve, we dont have a lot of female hockey role models, so, like, i get to be a nice hockey role model for my nieces and my nephews. Jimmy yeah, you didnt have that as a kid . No, i didnt have that growing up jimmy lane, youre still in school what do the other kids think about all this you get treated differently . Do you get special treatment for the most part, a lot of them dont know or just dont care [ laughter ] jimmy wow. Thats kids for you. Yeah i have a few friends who they ask, what are you going to do when you go back to school . And, like, what are you going to do about them . Im just like, well, not really telling many people about it a lot of people dont even know and some people who do know, just kind of stay quiet about it jimmy yeah do people go, like, well, youre acting like your character . Because you kind of act like your character [ light laughter ] yeah, i am im actually pretty similar to my character in, like, many ways. Jimmy he is, right im not very different from him. Jimmy are all you guys kind of similar to do you like, youre very youve got a good, funny one liners that you throw out there. Thats what i love about the show, cause, like, were all basically playing themselves like, they wanted rez kids, they got rez kids. So, yeah jimmy thats exactly right [ cheers and applause the show, can you set up the show i dont know who is the best to set it up and tell everyone what its about. If you havent seen it, its on hulu reservation dogs is about four native kids growing up in a reservation and after they lose their best friend, they want to leave the reservation. But as the show goes on, they learn just how really special it is. And they come to love it and not wanting to leave at all. Jimmy yeah thats thats good. Thats a good way to describe it [ applause ] its very its very funny its very actionpacked. Its very also very loving as well. And i think its getting great attention for this great acting and directing and all that stuff. But also, its a culture that i dont know much about. So, i like seeing it and going, oh, yeah. And just going, oh, i want to learn more about it. Are there parts of the show that you like better than the other parts . Do you like doing the heist stuff . Do you like doing the getting in trouble stuff do you like being funny . Do you like the dramatic acting i love all the funny stuff, so native people are so funny. And like, its the first time its ever been shown before. Jimmy yeah so, thats why i think a lot of people are falling in love with it, because its our humor.
