In oakland two teens have been arrested in connection with a shooting at Skyline High School. Reports of gunfire triggered a lockdown around 11 30 today. Worried parents gathered just off of campus. Students say the shooting happened near the school theater. This Afternoon Police are confirming there was gunfire and that nobody was hurt, but they wont say whether it happened on or off campus. We do know officers recovered a handgun during their investigation. Parents say this isnt the first time violence has come to campus. Today theyre calling on the School District to do more to keep their kids safe. I just think that we need metal detectors. I dont think we should wait for anybody to get hurt. Seeing this was an issue last year with a gun being brought on campus and again this year, we shouldnt be waiting. Were going to review all that and see where we can tighten things down to make sure were doing everything. Students were released to their parents around 2 30 this afternoon. Police arent confirming that the people taken into custody a students. Meanwhile, parents are calling for more security measures at skyline including metal detectors. Currently there are no metal detectors on any Oakland School campus. Accusations of poor pet care. Volunteers at San Jose Animal Care Services are speaking out today. They claim animals with Major Medical issues are not getting proper care. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro is in san jose with a closer look. Marianne, can you talk to us about their concerns . Reporter yes. We talked to one volunteer who says she has seen several cats in the shelter up for adoption with broken bones. In fact, she actually took home one of those cats. The cats name is linguini, and when linguini came in, she was lifeless. The vet said if she hadnt gotten medical treatment for the cat, she would have died. The case was emaciated and dehydrated. Shes also seeing severe medical problems in dogs that have been left unattende to. Shes have concerned about that. The citys dashboard shows 133 cats have died in the shelter, not from euthanasia, but in the shelter since july 1st. I know you talked with the public works director about this. What did he tell you . Reporter he told me that the citys goal is, of course, to euthanize as few animals as is absolutely possible. He says because of that, what they do is they hang on to animals who may be in Poor Condition perhaps longer than other shelters would in hopes that they would survive and be adopted and live full lives. That may be one reason why the numbers are up slightly on the number of animals that have died this year. At least the number of cats. He also said that all of the animals there are properly cared for. They do have a full shelter, so they have to triage and in some cases the animals may not get the medical attention immediately because they are helping other animals in greater need at the time. A tough situation definitely, marianne. The critics brought forward their claims. What do they want the shell tore to do . What do they want to happen . Reporter first of all, they want to see an audit of San Jose Animal Care Services. They feel like its just not being run properly. They would also like to see the shelter reach out more to rescue agencies. They say those rescue agencies can help take in some of those animals which would leave more room for other animals to come into the shelter. Marianne, thank you. Thieves are stealing the vehicles and using them to commit other crimes. Today San Jose Police released several surveillance videos. They show thieves ramming cars into smoke shops. Investigators say kias and hyundais are popular targets because of a flaw that allows people to start the vehicle with a simple ubs cable. If youre a kia or hyundai owner, make sure you have Safety Measures in place to prevent vehicle theft. Both automakers have created a free fix for this issue. Owners have to contact the dealer to get that fix done. A major disruption at airports across the country today. United airlines temporarily stopped all flights nationwide because of a tech issue. That ground stop has since been lifted, but the backups are ongoing at sfo right now with at least 55 united flights delayed today. The faa confirmed to news news that the airline asked for the ground stop. United said in a statement it experienced a systemwide technology issue. Flights that were already in the air were allowed to continue to their destinations. The ground stop was lifted after 30 minutes. United is working with the impacted customers. On friday organizers had to close access in and out because of heavy rains. The roads didnt open until yesterday. We did speak to one San Francisco man who said it took them more than six hours to exit burning man city. We didnt see people panic. It was very challenging. It really changed everybodys burn. Ill tell you what i saw was everybody in the neighborhood and across the festival coming together to share what resources they had, to troubleshoot and to not only take care of each other, but to continue to have a really good time. This was the scene last night as the burning man sculpture was set on fire after being delayed twice because of the weather.
