Hospital. Were live with more on what weve learned about the moments leading up to the deadly crash. Plus, search teams and cadaver dogs are now on the ground in lahaina as stories of survival continue to come out. We hear from a San Francisco family who escaped the flames in maui by jumping into the ocean. Increasing community outreach, the way officers in one east bay county came together to assure residents theyre doing all they can to deter criminals from breaking into cars. What they hope to install soon to help. This is today in the bay. Thanks so much for joining us on this wednesday morning. Im kris sanchez. Marcus washington is off. And im laura garcia. The big day for thousands of students across the bay area, more than 20 Different School districts are starting up today, including campbell unified, berkeley unified. The triplets head back today. Hey, all right. Im sure theyre not even up yet. Lets start with a look at that forecast. Meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect today. It may be hard to sleep with the excitement. It is middle school. And its going to be humid again today. So as we get started, we are seeing that layer of fog rolling across San Francisco, and its pretty low and pushed down to the ground. When we see that, a compact marine layer, it usually does clear up fairly quickly. As we go throughout the morning into the afternoon, its going to be mild there, but not another one for the enter tore valleys. Martinez will see a high of 94, livermore headed for the upper 90s. So its going to be hot again today, muggy. Also watching for a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms. So ill have more on that and whats ahead in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. Mike, youre seeing some folks working late. I can tell because the red sensors over here on highway 4 oh, they just changed from orange now to yellow, and soon to green. I believe that crew has finally cleared. Theyre about a half hour later getting the crews from westbound highway 4. Westbound 24, theyve cleared from the grid as well. So caltrans says their crews are clear. They should be back at speed from the caldecott tunnel. The rest of the bay area is a standard flow, no build out of the altamont. Back to you. A tragic crash in San Francisco is an important reminder this morning which happens to be the first day back at school for San Francisco unified. Just last night a 4yearold little girl in a stroller with her father were hit by an suv at a crosswalk near oracle park and the little girl did not survive. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is in San Francisco. A tragic reminder for everyone to just slow down. Reporter thats right. Especially on a day like today, when thousands of children, as you mentioned, are headed back into the classroom. Theyll be crossing those streets with or without their parents. A lot of children going back to school today here in San Francisco. Now, we have not received an update on the dad. He was brought to San Francisco general last night to be treated for lifethreatening injuries. His 4yearold daughter tragically, however, did not make it. Now, this is what it looked like yesterday at the scene of that fatal accident, which happened last night at 4th street and king, a block away from oracle park in San Francisco. The Gray Mercedes suv was still at the scene two hours after the crash. The driver was there cooperating with the investigation. Sfpd has not given many details about the actual crash. They did, however, say the scene was chaotic as emergency crews fought to get the suv off of the child. They also confirmed the family at the center of this tragic accident is from out of town. We learned of more details from a man driving this white pickup who says he saw things unfold. He agreed to share what he saw as long as we did not show his face or give his name. Like im telling the police officer, i was the one that waved them to go ahead because they had the right. They had 20 seconds on that timer. Reporter now, he says the family, the mom, dad and little girl in the stroller, which the dad was pushing, began to cross when the driver of the suv turned from the middle righthand turn lane. He says the light was green for the driver and for him to turn, but the intersection is marked as a pedestrian crossing. That family, the witness says, had a lot of time still to get across the street. Now, sfpd says drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in this. It is a cautionary and tragic tale this morning, as so many children and their parents are headed back into the classroom. Another reminder to slow down, slow down and keep your eyes on the road. Back to you. Most definitely. Thank you very much, ginger. To maui now where recovery teams are searching fireravaged parts of the island for victims. We now have learned the death toll from the fires is up to 106 people. Officials say they will start the process of identifying the victims today. About 1,300 people are still unaccounted for, and authorities are warning that the fires could pose longterm health risks to residents because of the chemical compounds contaminating both the air and water. Officials say that the cost of all of the damage on maui could be around 7 billion. Weve heard so many harrowing stories about people fighting to survive that fastmoving inferno. A San Francisco family that escaped the flames by jumping into the ocean are now sharing their video and story of survival. The soto family says as the flames grew around them, they parked their car, jumped off of a ledge into the water. Waves slammed against them as they held onto rocks. The siblings say they kept their eyes closed most of the time because of the thick smoke. Some of the soto family were burned and bruised. They were in the water for six hours before being rescued. Thankfully, we were one of the ones who made it out. We did see, like, some lifeless bodies on the shore when we were making it out once the firemen came. It was just a scary sight to see. I froze when i saw the lifeless body. The family says theyre lucky to be alive and will never forget the devastation of lahaina. Were trying to make it easy for you to help out. We have a list of verified organizations collecting donations on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. Just click on the how to help maui link in our trending bar. Police in alameda are telling the community that some new technology is being used to stop a rising string of car thefts and breakins there. Last night the Police Department held a Community Meeting to address the crimes. There were 94 reported breakins or thefts last month alone. One woman said that thieves stole four cars just in her neighborhood alone. Now the police say that the city is taking steps to change things by installing license plate readers. We have been able to arrest people who are driving stolen vehicles, who are operating out of vehicles that are committed in other crimes. Vehicles that are wanted. And what that is, we are leveraging technology to help us be much more efficient and effective in our response. The department is also in a staffing deficit, but the chief said that hiring efforts are going in the right direction. You can protect yourself from thieves and help out police who are trying to track down stolen catalytic converters. In about 15 minutes, chris chmura will show us how to stamp our information on that highly stolen item. Just into our newsroom, we now know who will be playing in the womens world cup championship match. Less than 15 minutes ago england beat the host country australia. The two teams evenly matched and it was in the 86th minute that determined the match. Russo was able to get the ball fast australias goalie. England won 31 and goes on to play spain on sunday in the finals. Taking a live look at fremont, where students in the Fremont Unified School district are headed back to class today. We really hope that all of you kids, your teachers, parents, have a great day. I always think of the mom and dad can hardly wait until School Begins again. Thats right, here we go. Its weird, because i was kind of sad that school was starting. It went by so fast. I love summer with the kids. Its a lot more laid back. Now its back to the hustle. Making lunch, doing all of that. Lets just get through the day. Were just Getting Started here. Were right now going to see some mild temperatures as you get ready to head out. By the Time School Starts in fremont, it will be 66 degrees, and we are starting out mostly clear. We have sunshine expected throughout the day as our temperatures head for the mid80s here. Its going to be a really nice one. Now, were also seeing some hotter temperatures, especially in the inland valleys, with cupertino reaching 93 today. Now, these temperatures will be very much like they were yesterday, with a few spots hitting 100 degrees, but mostly 70s and 80s, with some upper 90s for the inland valleys. Well talk more about the high heat and some more changes ahead coming up in a few minutes. Hopefully you can find lower numbers at the gas pump. Im finding the lower numbers out there. San ramon, 4. 89, thats the lowest, lets call out exxon on San Ramon Valley boulevard. San mateo high schools start today and maybe some new drivers, perhaps, will fill up for 4. 79 a gallon at the 76 on south el camino real. Calling out the new price leader in mountain view, 4. 49 lights up the new sign at the newly renamed great gas. Were looking at the roadways, depending on which city youre driving in, there should be absolutely no problem right now on the freeways. We will go to the Altamont Pass where theres typical slowing building into livermore from the westbound direction, from the top of the screen, vasco at speed with no problems, and across the bay a beautiful drive. Were seeing lower clouds hovering around. Back to you. Well, how early is too early when it comes to shopping . The answer apparently is never. Still ahead, christmas is still 131 days away, and were buying school supplies, but this morning several businesses are already starting their holiday deals. What you can buy four months away from the holiday. I havent even got the turkey in the oven. Slacker. Thanksgiving is just right around the corner. Well take a look at the weekend forecast in a few minutes. Were looking at 101, taillights heading south. Thats traditionally the commute direction through san rafael toward the golden gate bridge. No slowing or interruption here. I have a north bay crash i spotted on the blotter. Well show you where that is. Happy wednesday to you. Stocks took a hit yesterday on more concerns over the chinese economy. I will say i think youre going to see gas prices come down as speculators speculate demand is going to fall in china. New this morning, some people believe its never too early to be thinking about christmas, even though summer isnt officially over. Some retailers are already rolling out string lights and Christmas Trees online. Lowes and home depot are selling wreaths and trees on their website. Youll see it in stores as we get closer to halloween. Retail analysts say despite inflation concerns, Holiday Spending is expected to go up this year. At the end of the day, they want to meet the consumer, meet the shopper where the shopper is, and if that means a discount in july, theyre going to play that game. You can watch the full interview this morning on the today show at 7 00 a. M. Right after today in the bay. Youre not supposed to store it. Youre supposed to put it up now. No way. It is too hot to go outside and string christmas lights. Instead of the 12 days of christmas, its going to be six months. Ill run out of ideas. Lets get to the first day of school. We havent had labor day yet. Come on theres a lot going on, though. Lets talk about this weather because its been so muggy and hot in the valleys, and that continues for today. As we get started with a few clouds, the heat continues for the inland areas. Were going back to the 90s and a few spots hitting 100 degrees. Also the high fire danger will still exist as we have hot, dry and breezy conditions, and lately weve seen a lot of lightning strikes. So were still watching to see if that could possibly spark any new fires. A lot of activity happening across the region, as we get this surge of monsoon moisture, and its all being drawn in by an area of low pressure that remains off the coast. This is not moving, so its going to continue to bring in that chance of rain and thunderstorms. So we have this low here today, its going to move a little week. That could spark off a lot of rain and thunderstorms. Yes, were talking about this in august as we can see the remnants of a tropical system coming in very closely to the bay area, and we could see that by next monday, tuesday, and then moving out on wednesday. Here in the near term, were still looking out for showers and thunderstorms over the sierra, and we are also seeing the energy drifting into parts of the north bay, moving through the Sacramento Valley late this evening. So we could start out tomorrow morning with thunderstorms farther to the north and also some lightning. As far as temperatures, its going to be hot once again, highs reaching into the low to mid90s today, 98 in walnut creek, while hayward will see a high of 85. Low to mid80s for much of the peninsula. Into San Francisco, were looking at mid70s. For the north bay its going to be anywhere from 60s near the coast to 102 or ukiah. Our sevenday forecast shows the heat continues. Well continue to follow, also, a slight cooldown for the weekend and those Storm Chances in the forecast for early next week. Mike, you see a crash and some slowing . Right, but not necessarily in the same spot. We see slowing, the road work had cleared a little late and that led to early slowing and that stuck around and built as the commute is expected to build there as we talk about coming into concord. Then this crash were talking about in the north bay, reports that it involves three big rigs, but i dont see a lot of slowing. I dont see any slowing west 37 approaching highway 121. Im waiting for more clarification from chp. The slower drive does start leaving vallejo. The rest of the bay, standard morning commute. Thank you so much. We do want to say happy first day of school for students at santa rosa high. Also, sunnyvale unified going back to school today. Yes, and its starting out already warm and humid across the bay area, and so you do want to wear something thats going to help keep you cool, especially if you have p. E. Outside today. Lets get a look at sunnyvale unified and what to expect today. Its starting out in the mid60s, all clear, and at pickup time its at 84 degrees. So we will have warm temperatures as we go into the rest of today. Some of our valleys hitting the upper 90s. Concord, livermore, 99 today. In oakland, expect it to reach 79, while San Francisco will be in the mid70s, Half Moon Bay 65 degrees. Also still watching out for a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms. Ill have more on that and also the continued heat in the forecast. Mike, you have an update on that crash on highway 37 . I do. The good news is it does not involve three big rigs. The bad news is its westbound 37, a critical start of the morning commute as the build happens. There is a passenger vehicle that ran into the back of a larger truck, so that is the activity on the right side and blocking your right lane. That restricts traffic flow as the build starts to come out of vallejo in the westbound direction. This could be an issue. Im looking for hopes of them clearing it in the next few minutes. On the right side we see the slowing continuing to build, west highway 4. The bay bridge should have the metering lights in a couple of minutes. No surprises aside from highway 37. Back to you. Thank you. Alameda countys District Attorney pamela price has only been in office for eight months, but the effort to recall her is rolling forward. Last night Alameda County officially accepted a petition aimed at removing her from office. It is being sphere headed by a Community Members group that calls itself save Alameda County for everyone. The wife of a man shot in 2021 is the leader of the group. She believes people are not being prosecuted appropriately. I dont want anyone to suffer what we have suffered. I dont want anyone to go through this. We need to know people committing these Violent Crimes will be prosecuted. Price officially has ten days to respond to the recall notice. After that, the group will have to gather 90,000 more signatures if the issue is to be placed on a ballot. We did reach out to the District Attorneys office for a response. They referred us back to the price campaign, which did not respond. The recall Group Expects the effort will cost about 8 million. The search continues this morning for victims after the nations deadliest fire ripped through maui. We now know the death toll has risen to 106. President biden says nearly 500 federal personnel have been deployed, that includes a team to help identify victims. Coroners, pathologists, xray and Lab Technicians are on the island now. Loved ones are being asked to get their cheek swabs for dna, then those samples will be compared to the dna of victims. Hundreds are still missing. Many feared dead. This morning, the lahaina bypass road reopens to all motorists. Access will be limited for west maui residents, First Responders and employees. For many, it is the first time theyre going home in a week. The governor is urging everyone to use caution. At the same time, a surfing star says the native supplies need is so great. Kyle lenny says with roads jammed, Community Members have been using his jet ski to get fuel, food and medication to those in need. Weve single handedly supplied everybody in the local community with these donations. We need help moving it around. And these are the answers youre going to get if you come to these communities, hey, how can we help. Now, at the same time, survivors of the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history are reaching out to help the people of maui. The 2018 campfire in butte county killed 85 people and nearly destroyed several towns, including the town of paradise. We spoke with sandy gerhardt, who lost her home. She recently went on a facebook message board to offer maui victims suggestions on how to deal with the trauma of losing everything. She also had this advice for the best way people can help the people of maui to recover. If you know somebody directly, you can give them money or gift cards. That way they can buy what they need, what fits them, what they like, when they have somewhere to put it. Aside from collecting gift cards, sandi is organizing ways for people in paradise to help maui victims fill out paperwork and apply for Disaster Relief and benefits. The today show will continue our Coverage Later this morning. The mayor of maui will be live with an update from the island and you can watch that interview coming up at 7 00 on the today show. Also later this morning, one of our wine regions will bless the grapes in hopes of having a good harvest this year. We certainly hope so. Today in the bays bob redell joins us live from the Livermore Valley wine country this morning. This will be the first harvest since the drought ended. Any talk of what this year should be like . Reporter yeah, good morning to you, laura and kris. Yeah, that is a question i posed to the winemaker here at the vineyard behind me in livermore where the blessing of the grapes will take place later this morning. That is an annual tradition, by the way. Brent says the 2023 vintage is looking very promising for a number of reasons. Our historic winter storms saturated the soils, the vines grew sooner as a result, which means healthier plants. Brent didnt have to water until a good two to three months later than usual, with about 20 to 30 less water. There is a little less fruit on the vine because of a mild spring and a couple of rainy periods that took place in the middle of the bloom. The upside, the looser clusters of grapes are less prone to mold and mildew. Over the past several years winemakers have harvested earlier to avoid the heat. Brent anticipates this years harvest to start in two to three weeks, which historically is a more normal timeframe. Its the goldilocks thing, it has to be just right. So far, this year has been just right. We had the mild start, but then weve had these heat spells that havent been extreme, for the most part. Theyve been early enough in the development of the grapes that we really havent seen much in the way of sunburn or any negative issues from that. They just serve to cause minor stress on the vines. But in a good way. Reporter now, brent expects to harvest the last of his 17 varietals in late october, early november, some of which you can see on the driveby of his winery. You can see the vineyards there. He points out that a lot can happen between now and then, but in terms of weather he does anticipate more of the same. Hes certainly hoping for that. Were talking about mini heat waves followed by cooler periods. So a rabbi, a Catholic Priest and a pastor will bless the grapes this morning. This is an annual tradition. For more information, you can log onto the lvwine. Org website. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Everybody thought you were starting a joke there, bob. A rabbi, a priest and they walk into a winery. Reporter im looking at this, huh . Well check back with you next hour and you can give us the punch line. Thanks, bob. Reporter ill just mix it up. Im sure you will. Hoping for a good harvest this year. No kidding. Its good to hear that the drought is over and that things are starting to get back to normal for our farmers. Yeah. Its been hot for some of those areas, but of course they need that, too. Lets get a look at our forecast for livermore over the next several days. Were still going to be in the upper 90s this afternoon. Temperatures come down as we head into the weekend with upper 80s and low 90s going into the weekend and it looks like that weather continues into next week. May want to get some of those grapes off of the vine before we get more rain here as we go into next week. That will be definitely a possibility. Lets get a look at our temperatures with oakland headed for 79 degrees. We have more schools coming back online today. In martinez it will reach 94 degrees. So still really hot for those afternoon hours, but we are starting out mild and muggy this morning. Mike, youre seeing some slowing in san jose. As expected right here north 101, your traditional slowing that happens just before 5 40. Were looking at a smooth flow of traffic around most of the bay. The build for highway 4 continues extending. Highway 37 adds more traffic west toward the crash, which is still blocking one lane. But chp is there, west 37 approaching 121. Looking ahead, we do have the closure tonight, an important closure out of downtown oakland. Webster tube will be closed for its traditional maintenance, so that will go on until 5 00 open and reopen for the morning commute. You can get to the island of alameda, use the bridges to the south. Locals are well familiar with that and now you are, too. Across the bay we have a different pattern today. Well have a midday game for the giants and that will be lunchtime traffic getting to the ballpark and then after the game that may push toward the get out of town after work traffic as well. Back to you. It is 5 40 right now. Work being done to ensure proper representation. Ill talk about a crash on a critical north bay freeway coming up. Following the controversy over the blind side movie, the tuohy family is responding after michael oher alleges the family misled them into thinking they adopted him. He claims that he signed papers in 2004 that made him conservators. He said he just discovered this six months ago. With conservatorship, he alleges they negotiated the movie deal for the blind side and claims that the family profited, though he received nothing. President biden says everything is being done for victims of the Massive Wildfire in hawaii. Scott mcgrew, president s often take credit for Disaster Relief, but they also take the blame. They also take the blame. Honestly, most of it is automated. The Government Agencies plan for disasters, they hit go on a disaster plan the moment a disaster is declared. The president of lahaina declared an emergency at 9 45 tuesday night, the First Federal disaster workers arrived about 18 hours later. The president spoke about a phone call he had with the governor of hawaii. Whatever you need, youre going to get. And that will get aid into the hands of people who desperately need it, who have lost their loved ones, lost their homes, their livelihoods. Conservatives have criticized biden for a slow response in declaring a disaster, but it matches previous timelines. The fires were declared an emergency a week ago tuesday by the local mayor. The president declared it a disaster, and thus eligible for federal funds less than 48 hours later. The nevada globe reports President Biden will visit the nevada site of lake tahoe on friday. New Court Documents show special counsel jack smith has Donald Trumps twitter dms, direct messages, the private way of communicating on twitter, including deleted messages and draft messages. Still no word on when trump might turn himself in in georgia. Many of his fellow republicans still supporting him. Ill continue to say, as i said, which is we see the legal system being weaponized against political opponents. That is unamerican and unacceptable. I dont think the first time we put a current president ial candidate in the middle of a race, his opponents running the justice department, should be on the back of untested legal theories. Both of those men running against trump for the nomination. Candidates like scott, ramaswamy, nikki haley, are trying to convince trump voters to vote for them instead, while at the same time supporting trump, which leaves them in a very tough position. Thank you very much, scott. 5 48 right now. New numbers are revealing concerns by voters when it comes to diversity of elected leaders in california. The findings are a part of a new online poll by uc berkeley. 55 of those surveyed consider it very important elected officials represent the diversity of their community. 25 indicated it was somewhat of an important issue. The findings looked at more than 6,000 registered voters. The poll also finds that 51 of those surveyed support allowing noncitizens to vote in local school board elections. The policy is in place at some bay area School Districts such as San Francisco and oakland. Lets take a live look at san jose as the sun is starting to come up this morning. The kids in san jose unified have been back at it for a week. Campbell unified going back today, campbell high school. So we do have a lot more schools that will be heading out the door today. A lot more kids heading out for school today. Look at this beautiful view in San Francisco. It is really nice to see this from our sutro tower camera, a little bit of fog, clear sky overhead, and we also are going to have warm temperatures again for the inland areas as the fog rolls away fairly quickly. We also will keep the elevated fire danger due to hot, dry, breezy conditions and a few isolated thunderstorms weve seen develop. Were also sending our kids out today for the first day in walnut creek. Its going to be 65 and partly cloudy. Make sure theyre wearing something to keep them cool, because it will be 91, sunny and humid again today. Its going to be really hot, as weve seen the surge of some monsoonal moisture come in, this area of low pressure we can see off the coast and the clouds spinning, with a few lightning strikes. There still will be a slight chance that we could see that bring in some shower and thunderstorm activity today and for the next couple of days. This weekend well turn our attention to another storm system developing, this is possibly a tropical system that could bring in a lot of rain for Southern California between sunday and monday. By the time it gets to the bay area theres still quite a bit of moisture associated with it, so that could bring in rain, thunderstorms and lightning for early next week. So were really going to be watching this fairly closely. A very unusual setup that well see. In the near term, were going to see more thunderstorms developing over the sierra region and moving possibly into the north bay, as our temperatures reach into the mid to upper 90s, very much the same temperatures weve had will continue for today. As we take a look at our sevenday forecast, temperatures in the upper 90s today and not much cooler for the weekend. Maybe slightly less humidity, so that will make it feel better. Then we will watch out for Storm Chances in the forecast early next week as the heat continues and ramps back up to the mid90s inland and brings in more rain chances all across the bay area. Mike, you say youre happy about this update. I am happy, because the crash has cleared without any updates, with any major injuries, westbound 37 is now clear of that crash, heading toward highway 121 as the volume builds coming into the area from vallejo. More traffic is coming toward novato. We do have slowing typical for highway 4 and a crash right here, west 80, so well track that as well. At least one lane is blocked. Good news, the bay bridge toll plaza started the backup early but the middle lanes are building relatively slowly. Its wednesday, we expect a bigger volume than yesterday. Slowing heading toward the san mateo bridge, as well as north 101 starting the second build. Thats a little early. Well track that. Thank you, mike. Happening now, leaders in the north bay are announcing new efforts to help those struggling to make it in the bay. Sonoma county just approved nearly 1. 5 million to build Affordable Housing there.
