But talk about a multilayered and very interesting weather setup thats been creating these dangerous winds that ripped through hawaii today, producing those devastating pictures that probably bring flashbacks from our horrific fires weve seen in the past seven years. So let me show you whats happening. This hot area of High Pressure off to the north of the islands, thats creating the dry conditions. Also those initial wind gusts. The other layer is Hurricane Dora to the south. This is helping to rapidly pull that air across the islands. Thats why theyre seeing those gusts that top 50, 70 Miles Per Hour today. So let me get you a closer view. What youll see on maui is the most activity has been on the central part of the island, at least widespread. And then, of course, on the western side of maui. Thats also been quite a bit ravaged. Winds right now 12 Miles Per Hour. Were still seeing some gusts up to 50. Tomorrow temperatures stay just about the same. But again, we are expecting some improvement when it comes to these conditions. If you have family out there, they are looking at less wind, 15 to 30mileperhour gusts, and increased humidity. This is big for firefighters. Today it was around 20, 30 . Tomorrow, 70 to 90 humidity. That added humidity is going to help things out in a big way. Other local news, four men involved in a deadly gunfight at a Peninsula Park are now facing several charges. That shooting happened back in may of 2022 at jack ferrell park in east palo alto. Police say an argument over money turned into a gunfight and over 30 shots were fired as kids were playing in the park. One man was killed. Four others not involved in the fight were hurt. Three of the four men charged today were actually already in jail on separate charges. The search for a saratoga teen missing over a month is focused on the santa cruz mountains. 17yearold Katherine Schneider was last seen driving her car on july 5th. The car has been found but katherine has not be. Marianne favro is along highway 35 with the latest developments. Reporter this is near where katies car was found on monday. You can see that one lane of highway 35 is closed while search and rescue team members comb this area. And it has been a difficult task. In fact, at one point they had to tie a rope around this post and rappel down this steep hillside. Searching for answers. Today a Santa Clara County Sheriffs Department search and rescue team combed the mountains off of highway 35. The terrain so steep, they needed ropes to access some areas. This is south of Castle Rock State Park near where deputies discovered 17yearold katie schneiders White Honda Accord monday. Katie was last seen more than a month ago leaving her saratoga home, driving in her car. According to her family, she did not have her cell phone. Im very concerned why they just found the car now and not before. You know, it makes me very worried as to where she would have gone. Reporter katies friend Irene Frazier says her crosscountry teammate was about to start her senior year at Saratoga High School next week. She was such a good student, so focused on grades and getting into a good college. Im very concerned. Reporter we reached out to Los Gatos Saratoga Union High School district for a comment but did not receive a response. According to a social media post by katies mother, the family notified the Sheriffs Department as soon as she went missing and have delayed going public in part because, quote, we wish to honor their efforts to fin katie. At the same time, because katie is a shy, introverted child, we are trying to protect her privacy. Now this team, including a specially trained dog, are trying to see if they can solve the mystery of the missing teen and provide some answers for katies family. I just spoke with sheriffs deputies. Back in the classroom, students at more than two dozen Bay Area Schools returned to campus, and even as school kicks off, a lot of districts are still scrambling with staffing, supply issues, and heres a biggie, dwindling enrollment. Reporter no doubt about it, declining enrollment has been a problem trending for many Bay Area Schools for the past five years. And its not the only ongoing issue that needs to be solved. The bright signs show the kind of optimism that comes with a new school year, but its a mixed bag for the 16 Bay Area School districts that started classes today. Declining enrollments is an ongoing problem for many, but thats not the only problem. In reality, supply chain issues and issues with contractors and subcontractors are real. Reporter some of the superintendents told me they are optimistic about their numbers now that things are getting back to normal after the pandemic. But point out it will take time because when families leave, they dont always return at the same pace. Last year the city saw 65 deaths of pedestrians on the streets, almost double the amount of homicides. And its especially important as mentioned that as we head back to school and we have children walking and biking to and from campus each day, that we put an extra emphasis on the importance of traffic safety. The city is also working to hire more officers to rebuild its Traffic Enforcement unit and investing in hightech cameras around the city. Students in the north bay are getting supplies to go back to school. Community Health Organization the Ritter Center held its annual School Supply giveaway today handing out backpacks, books, lunch books and other supplies. The cost of School Supplies has risen almost 24 in the last couple of years. For lowincome families, it can be really challenging to have to make choices sometimes between gas in the car and School Supplies. We dont want kids worrying about getting those supply. We want them to get a good start on homework and their teachers and classes. So this really helps out. School supplies are super expensive, and 24 is a lot. More than 150 students were at the giveaway today. They went home with 100 gift cards to help with new clothing and shoes for the school year. Just a little bit here away from the coastline, then you went to concord, livermore, we still had warm 80s here. Still holding on to 85 right now in livermore. The thing that were tracking is the same system that was with us yesterday. Its just going to linger out here offshore. So the thing that this is going to do is, as it lingers, its going to pull in some humidity and moisture from the south with that counterclockwise circulation. So thats where were going to get the thunderstorm chance from in california. Were also going to get some fog. Let me get you more details on this. Right now the areas getting some of those thunderstorms would be down there toward los angeles, also las vegas. Tomorrow morning, what youre seeing on the map here is all fog. Well begin with low clouds and spotty drizzle from that fog. Then we should see a lot of this really clear back by 10 30 in the morning. Near the bay and coast, lingering clouds. As we roll through tomorrow afternoon, well be under sunshine. Right here across the inland valleys, take your eyes off towards the south and you can see all of this activity thats bubbling up. Thats some of that monsoonal moisture that eventually is going to get real close to us here from 5 00 to 10 00 tomorrow night. Even though this isnt picking up on a major chance for us, thunderstorms can always be a little rogue. You get one developing and it can move pretty fast and pretty close. Too close for comfort. So right now with that monsoonal moisture moving into the central valley, were looking at a slight chance of popup thunderstorms. Again, the better bet is going to be the south and also to the east of us as you roll through tomorrow night, friday morning. Youll see as we head into this weekend, the sierra could get in on. 5 to. 75 inches of rain. Again, right there just to the south of the bay area, well have some of those thunderstorm chances here that would be a little greater.
