Her recovery. And we speak with a cal state professor amid renewed Health Concerns surrounding aging leadership in congress. Plus, an inferno burning in paradise, a historic wine town destroyed as a dangerous situation unfolds in maui. The actions now put in place as multiple wildfires continue to burn. Thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. Im marcus washington. Im laura garcia. We begin with senator Dianne Feinsteins recent fall. Shes out of the hospital now, but the incident is prompting renewed Health Concerns surrounding leadership in washington. Scott mcgrew has that part of that story in just a few moments. But first nbc bay areas bob redell is live for us outside of the senators San Francisco home this midday. Talk to us about the latest conditions. Reporter good morning. Nbc news has confirmed that u. S. Senator Dianne Feinstein was taken to the hospital on tuesday after she fell at her home behind me here in San Francisco. Her spokesperson says, senator feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home. All of her scans were clear and she returned home. The New York Times reports she tripped over a chair at 1 00 yesterday afternoon and was admitted for about two hours. Feinstein, who is 90 years old, has recently had other Health Problems which my colleague scott mcgrew will delve into shortly. Senator has however rejected calls to resign and has insisted she will retire after she completes her current term as senator, which ends january of 2025. Feinstein is a member of the Senate Judiciary committee that mays a Critical Role in confirming president ial appointments and federal judges. Shes been a u. S. Senator since 18992 and was mayor of this city, San Francisco, between 1978 and 1988. Reporting live here in San Francisco, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Thank you very much, bob. Todays fall may have been described as minor but is likely to increase calls that the senior senator steps down. Scott mcgrew, those calls are even coming from her democratic allies. Indeed her. Remember, she was out of the senate for several months recovering back home in the bay area from shingles and some other afflictions. That pressure really grew for her to return to washington because shes a key vote on that Senate Judiciary as bob pointed out or step down. When she returned back in may, there was some surprise as to how weak she was, especially to those who knew her as that vibrant mayor of San Francisco. As that determined senator who pushed through the assault weapons bill, the first woman to chair the Senate Intelligence committee as well. The senator has said she will not step down but will not run for another term. That did not calm concerns shes struggling now. There was a wellpublicized moment in july where she seemed confused reading a speech instead of casting a vote. Submitted yeah. Just say aye. Okay. Just aye. Aye. Thank you. As you saw, senator feinstein seemed to be able to laugh at herself about the incident. Her office later described the day as chaotic and she was preoccupied. Just a day earlier, Senate Minority leader Mitch Mcconnell, age 81, seemed to suffer an episode as he gave a press conference. Of course there are age concerns about joe biden, hes 80, donald trump, hes 77, but there are no minimums as far as the age that you can be a politician. Dr. Elizabeth bergman is at cal state, east bay. So, theres a constitutional minimum but no constitutional maximum. Good morning. Has there ever been a serious attempt to change that . No. All right. Fair enough. As it stands, we have a number of elderly people in the leadership of the united states. Is this this is a relatively new problem, right . I mean, i remember Ronald Reagan was, what, 77 when he stopped being president after two terms. Were just growing older as a nation. Yes. We could say that. But its really not an issue because we have we have elections and we regularly elect people, so senators are elected every six years, and voters know their age. Certainly voters knew when Dianne Feinstein ran for reelection that she was in her 80s, and they opted to vote for her. So in that sense, the voters have spoken and they got what they wanted. I think that any kind of age limits would be probably unconstitutional in any event, but i think that at the end of the day this is up to the voters. They are certainly supporting i see voters maybe in their own party supporting their candidates while perhaps casting doubts on the age of the party they dont like. Well, sure. People are trying to make this into a political issue, and maybe we want to take a look at, in fairness to senator feinstein, why dont we take a look at Mitch Mcconnell, who a couple weeks ago had a problem with his speech. He was unable to speak during a speech he gave, and, you know, nobody said very much about that, but theyre coming after diane. Of course Mitch Mcconnell is a republican, Dianne Feinstein is a democrat. Maybe this is ageism. Maybe its sexism. But i would say to Dianne Feinsteins credit and the credit of her staff, shes been very transparent about her issues. We knew the medical diagnosis, and i was one of those to speak out about her lack of being able to do the job earlier this year. But her team has been transparent. We knew she was diagnosed with shingles. We recently heard yesterday she had a minor fall. On the other side of that, her counterpart, Mitch Mcconnell in the senate, has not been transparent. We have no idea what happened to mitch. Theres been no discussion or release of medical information about what exactly transpired. So i think that certainly politics plays a role in that. Fair point. All right. Dr. Elizabeth bergman, well follow up with Mitch Mcconnells office, and see what details we can get there. As it stands, california will elect a new senator to replace california senator Dianne Feinstein in november of 24. Were she to step down first, just theoretically, governor newsom, laura, would have to name his or her replacement to fill that spot until january of 2025. We will see if there will be any changes and how it will play out. Thank you, scott. Now to our other top story, destructive wildfires burning down the town of lahaina on the island of maui in hawaii. A brush fire quickly spread to businesses and homes. Winds from Hurricane Dora really fuelling this fire, pushing it along, making it difficult for firefighters to put any of these flames out. The acting governor has now dispatched the Hawaiian National guard to help. They believe there are seven wildfires just on the island of maui alone with another big fire burning on the big island. Witnesses say People Living in maui had to jump into the harbor to escape the fastmoving flames. That fire is still raging. Firefighters dont know the full scope of the devastation to the islandnd just yet, but already people believe this could be the worst Natural Disaster on the island in over 30 years. Its very hard to see. Meteorologist kari hall joins us to talk about that hurricane that i mentioned that is really making these fires even worse. The thing is its pretty far off coast. It is very far away, and that was the reason they didnt have a lot of the advisories and things to worn people about the high winds. Heres Hurricane Dora down here. It is a category 4, so it is a very powerful hurricane, but there is also an area of High Pressure thats set up to the north, and it created this basically wind tunnel that fanned those high winds over the island. But it was over 700 miles away. Not to mention how quiet it is here as well. That too. We have a lot of issues. It just combined with the high winds, the dry conditions, and then these fires quickly got out of control. So we are still looking at some high wind gusts throughout today, and we are also going to see the potential of more of those fires burning. Unfortunately, we havent gotten a lot of updates recently because everyone has evacuated. So, hopefully everyone is okay. Here we are at home looking at a clearing sky, looking at the golden gate bridge, and we are seeing a little bit of a break from the low clouds and the fog, but our temperatures remain nice and mild as we are now a little bit cooler than whats normal for this time of year. Ill let you know if there are any changes in the forecast. Well get a look at the complete microclimate forecast in a few minutes. Thanks, kari. This all happened near 8th avenue in irving in the inner sunset. Firefighters were there into the Early Morning hours to make sure that things did not flare up. Now, this started around 8 30 last night, quickly burning through a hardware store, aer shed in the rear of the store, and an apartment building. It took firefighters two hours to clear the flames. A live look at downtown san jose and city mall where leaders this week are facing a deadline, now six days out. Thats when thousands of city workers are threatening to launch a threeday strike. With students heading back to school, making it in the bay has a whole new meaning for families this time of year. Its not just parents who have to think about covering those costs of School Supplies. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez explains that teachers are getting creative on stretching a dollar to fill those cabinets and cubbyholes. Reporter marcus and laura, it is back to school for the Mountain View School District along with more than a dozen other districts. So when the kids start trickling back home today, they may have a supply list from the school, but they may also have a link to their own teachers wish lists as teachers try to fill their supply closets without digging deep into their own pockets. When you look around your childs classroom, you wont be able to tell which supplies and materials were paid for by their teacher. But according to the National Education association, more than 90 of teachers say they spend about 500 of their own money every year. What they buy supplements what they get from their School Districts and their schools, and thats why more teachers than ever are using social media to put out their amazon wish lists and crowdsourcing requests to their students families and often to their own families and friends. Bill hotter is teaching transitional kindergarten for the first time in his 28year career, and because its a new class his budget is 1,000, a far cry from the 200 he usually gets. His wish list is posted to facebook and hes hoping the Pleasant Hill pta will pull through like they usually do. Im very lucky to have the pta that i do. They will eventually take care of me. So i think, like all of my wooden puzzles im asking for, will eventually be in my classroom. Sara huckabee started teaching kindergarten in san jose during the pandemic, so when she got her first nonvirtual classroom, her online wish list supplemented what she got from the evergreen School District. I got a ton of donations from both the parents and my friends and family through facebook. So really that ammon wish list totally ended up supplying almost everything in my classroom. If social media didnt exist, theres no way i would have gotten so many donations. Reporter teachers in some districts dont get their own specific classroom budgets, but they do get to choose from the stock of supplies. At San Franciscos Tenderloin Community school, many teachers create wish lists through donors choose, a nonprofit that allows anyone to donate money or supplies to classrooms. And the teachers help each other out too. Theres a really strong sense of community. Thats why a lot of it is teachers passing each other on stuff or sort of helping each other out with what they need. Reporter come tax time, teachers can only write off 300 of expenses, but for parents and family members, we can donate as much as we want and get a tax writeoff as long as the supplies are for everyone in the class, not just for particular children. Sanchez sands, nbc bay area news. Thank you, kris. South bay firefighters are helping the community in a different way. Not only do they fight fires, theyre handing out School Supplies to students in need. San jose firefighters visited Washington Elementary School students today. They passed out some special backpacks full of School Supplies. This is the third year the department has done this. They actually brought the fire engine out also to teach those kids about their jobs. And for these firefighters, its not just about, you know, handing out book bags but making a difference in those schools and its also about the longtime impact in the community. You want to let them know were friends, were there to help. Events like this creates relationships. And this is just the beginning. The Fire Department actually plans to hand out more than 1,000 backpacks to students across san jose. Fun getting the School Supplies. Kari has been keeping tabs on the weather. Hopefully the kids start with the jackets, bring them home by the end of the day. Thats always the issue. Write the name for it or you may find it hanging on the fence at the school. Its going to be for some kids the first day of school today. Theyre about to get out in a few hours. Then we have a lot more kids heading to school tomorrow, so this is the last day to enjoy summer. Heres a look live in walnut creek, and if youre about to head out, maybe going to lunch, well, we have some really comfortable weather. Its only 70 degrees. It is a little breezy. Weve seen those winds kicking up to about 15 to 20 miles per hour, and we do continue to warm up. Well make it up to about 80 for today, but thats actually cooler than whats normal for this time of year. So, its been pretty nice to have the break from the high heat. In san jose, it will reach 79 degrees for today and 84 in cupertino. For the east bay were looking at temperatures in the low to mid80s. In martinez, expect a high of 78 degrees and 73 in hayward. The sevenday forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. Check it out. For the weekend, it will be fairly mild up and down the peninsula, palo alto reaching 80 today and in san mateo look for a high of 71. In San Francisco, its in the mid60s, downtown and in the mission district, mill valley reaching 68 degrees with some upper 80s farther to the north. In novato, expect a high of about 77. Were easing off the heat for now, but it will be returning as High Pressure comes back our way in time for the weekend into early next week. And it looks like that High Pressure and the heat will be slow to move once it arrives. So we only have a few more days of these temperatures that once again have been a little bit cooler than normal, but we are going to see a prolonged period of heat in that extended forecast. Lets get a look at gilroy. Were looking at highs in the upper 70s through friday, and then we start to see those temperatures rising on saturday. Sunday even warm we are some upper 80s, and were going to see that continue throughout much of next week. While gilroy will be warm, well see much hotter temperatures in some inland east bay valleys and also farther to the north, so were talking about some low to mid90s in the forecast from sunday through at least the beginning of next week. Then we take a look at San Francisco where we dont see as much of a change. The marine layer and the fog will continue, and for thursday and friday, there wont be much sunshine. If youre making weekend plans there, getting ready for some of the outdoor festivities, maybe in the upper 60s, so still pretty cool with low 70s expected early next week. Back to you, laura and marcus. Thanks, kari. Happening now, theres a new billionaire this morning, not here in california but in florida. Strong little baby at that, knocking it right out of his hands. Final look at the forecast. It looks pretty good here. Well have nice weather for the inland areas reaching into the low 80s, but we are in for a hot weekend for the valleys, reaching into the mid90s by sunday.
