It is important to point out these results have not been peerreviewed or publicized yet. But, as you said, if it turns out to be true, yes, this is a big deal why . Because there are limited weight loss drugs on the market and some have side effects none have been shown outside of the diabetes population to reduce cardiovascular events also, when you take a birdseye view, when you think about the fact that cardiovascular disease is leading the cause of death in this country, one dies every 30 seconds, over 400 billion in costs, a drug that reduces that is important i think this will open up a lot of conversations in offices between doctors and patients, potentially change how insurances cover these drugs and most importantly, save lives potentially. One of the things is to make sure they get their vaccinations thats one of the most important things booster shots arent out yet were not sure who they will recommend it to, but make sure theyre all set up and ready to go look at their growth, their development, how theyre doing at this point in time. One thing to remember is when the doctor is there with you, the doctor might say as a parent, hey, i want you to step out of the room for a minute so i could talk to your child alone. Parents sometimes dont like that if they ask you to step out of the room and you have a problem with that, just ask why. The doctor will explain to you there are questions they want to ask your child they wont answer in front of you. Questions like, are they getting bullied, using drugs a lot of parents will say, they tell me everything we were kids did you tell your parents everything probably not even half. No kid does ill take to them a little afterwards to let them know what happened. What if you cant get your kid in before the School Year Starts you want to make sure you get that as soon as possible, especially the vaccinations. Make sure you get them because it takes a couple weeks for them to take affect a big thing, sports physicals. Thats the big thing you want to make sure you get the sports physicals done it is not just sports. It is activities as well do that now. Get the paperwork from the school. I want to talk about the social and emotional health. You could have all the academics in the world, make sure the backpack is not too heavy, but if your child doesnt feel well emotionally or socially, it can be tough. Thats why we want to ask you to leave the room so we can talk about some of the issues of them growing up you know, the kids that last year, the boy or girl that was icky to them might not be icky to them. You want to start that conversation about bullying. Ask direct questions about their mental health. You think then after they leave the Doctors Office and were home, i think sometimes it gets harder when your child is in the tween age. Keep the conversation open. Do lots of listening talk about the expectations for this year, what might go on. Thats good. And do they have any issues at school . Ask them that. At the end of the day, what was the best thing today what was the worst thing today and tell them about bullying. Dr. John, we talked about the physical exam and starting the conversation with our kids now we have make an action plan. Tell me about this plan. So you want to have an action plan because having a plan helps reduce their stress because they know whats going to happen. Lets say they have asthma or a peanut allergy talk to them about medicines here is the medicine you will carry an epipen in your backpack and if you cant find that, the nurse will have an epipen at her nurses station or Nurses Office lets show you how to get there. And make sure they understand they can ask the question, hey, i need to see the nurse because sometimes kids dont want to do that and they might have a first aid kit as well in their backpack. Teach them how to stop direct bleeding, pressure on the wound and cpr. Any kid, any age can do that.
