And it seems like these days teen slang terms are evolving so fast that sometimes its hard to keep up so we decided to give you a little primer on new teen slang terms in a segment we call seth explains teen slang. Lets see the definition its when someones facemask is askew. For example, i saw gerald and fitzwilliam tittering to themselves while pointing in my direction. I looked in a mirror and saw that, while my mask was on, my nose and upper lip were fully exposed to the elements. How shameful to be observed when one is so dreadfully maskew. This is someone who coughs on a bowl and blows away the weed for example, we were about to get blazed but then colleen took a hit of some chronic19, callback, and turned into a leaf blower. Seth im doing really well and i was happy to hear that, you know, a lot of people have been using this time were separated from a lot of friends and family to do Different Things and ive heard that selfhelp, selfimprovement is one of the ways youve been spending your time yeah. Absolutely so at the beginning of quarantine, i got really into meditation actually and i started meditating more. It was something that, like, i had kind of done in the past but not really made a lifestyle out of it and now ive started meditating like i i kind of came up with this new philosophy that, like, im never bored. I never have to worry about being bored because i can always meditate no matter where i am or what im doing, so thats helped me a lot and then also just, like, you know, building better relationships with my friends and family and even my dogs like getting to walk them is something i didnt get to do when i was working so much so this quarantine has been a nice little experience for me to get to know myself better. Seth im so glad youve been using it to such positive effect i also want to talk about something you used your time for. You wrote a song called, commanderinchief which is basically sort of a letter to the president. How did it come about that you wanted to express yourself that way . Well, i was in the studio with a few friends of mine and we were coming up with concepts and we were just thinking, we were like, what, what are some i was thinking about the music thats out there right now and i was like, why isnt anyone talking about whats happening . And, you know, in the 60s and 70s when anything political would happen, music was such a key element to help people process it and get through it. So i was like, you know, i really need to step up my lyrics and make it about something other than just my life. And so i started making more music that is less about me and more about the broad scope of whats going on in the world and one of the songs that we came up with was commanderinchief and it was inspired by pinks dear mr. President you know when back however many years ago that came out. And i wanted to do, like, a newer version. Seth thats really, really cool that you did that and then im wondering, because of that, and because of the sort of perspective you show in that song, were you excited on saturday did you get out . Did you dance in the streets so to speak so i was actually in mexico, and i was on a meditation retreat actually and so when i got the news, it was on my way home and it was the best news i cried. I sobbed i mean, it was just an emotional day overall for me because i identify as queer, and so for me having somebody in the oval office that is supportive of that meant a lot to me and it just, you know, theres im also a Firm Believer in feeling like the country will be united after, you know, some time goes by, but i think that were on the right path and, yeah im very, very excited seth it definitely i think all of saturday felt like a meditation retreat for me. So i can imagine how you felt leaving one and then getting that news. It was like double meditation retreat. Right right. Seth hey, so youre hosting the peoples Choice Awards. I mean obviously you, you know, performed at a High Pressure situations before, things like, you know, National Anthem at a super bowl or the grammys. How do you feel about this one are you feeling any nerves at all or is it just excitement im pretty excited. You know, i dont feel like there is too much at stake when it comes to the National Anthem at the super bowl, theres a little bit more pressure than hosting an awards show just because, you know, you mess up the lyrics then people come after you as an american so, you know, i just theres less pressure but im looking forward to it and i am still nervous. Like, dont get me wrong hosting is not my first language so to speak. So singing is. And if you have any tips, please let me know because i know youve done a ton of hosting yourself including this talk show, so seth well, the only thing ill tell you is just know that you will do far better at hosting than i would do singing the National Anthem. Seth keep that in mind at any point that you feel nervous at all i think another thing thatll be nice and in general watching anything like this for people is you mentioned the stakes, it will be you know, again, this is people choosing we just had an election, which is also people choosing, but it would be nice to watch people choosing something that doesnt seem to send us off in one direction over the other this is up to the people. And, in fact, this is actually the awards show thats always meant the most to me because they are the ones that get to vote they are the ones casting the decisions. Its not up to some academy that, you know, is political or whatever its like, this is up to the people and thats what this year has been about you know, listening to the people and finally were doing it again but its going to be less pressure and more fun seth i also want to talk about the fact that you were here in 2014 as i mentioned and one thing we talked about is your belief in aliens and mermaids and at the time, i think i, sort of, gave you a hard time i gave you a hard time, but let me tell you something, demi, that since 2014, so many crazy things have happened mmhmm. Seth if i came home in a mermaid within my bathtub, it would still probably be the 15th craziest thing that happened since we last saw each other, so i just want you to know im not fully there yet, but im starting to come to your side of the argument all right fine you know, baby steps ill take it seth but were still feeling strong you are still very firmly in the alien mermaid camp im on a different level of that like, i have made contact. It is through meditation and consciousness. It is like if you want to go deep, we can go deep, but i feel like that is going to take way more than this segment so seth well you did i dont want to go honestly we dont have a ton of time, but when you say contact during meditation, is it more likely just tell us this. Are you more likely to be contacted by an alien or a mermaid . Well, it depends. You view mermaids as something completely separate than extraterrestrial being seth you know what, im going to defer to you now. Are they the same . They could be, but we see mermaids as could be just an extraterrestrial species living underneath the water which we havent seth oh, my god, the aliens got to demis feed [ laughter ] this is this is a classic oh, my god. Seth first of all, i am a huge fan of the show and its been very much Appointment Television for my wife and i is it fun to do something that you get the sense people are tuning into every week yeah, its great. Its great especially now, you know, that were in such need of, you know, some relief and some escape, you know although the show the show can be very, very stressful at times. You know because of the subject matter. But were very happy to be able to captivate the audience and to capture peoples imagination, so yeah were very excited seth thats so true that you say that it really speaks to how stressful the times were living in are that i look forward to a you know what, i just want to relax with a show about a brutal murder. A brutal murder and about, you know, all the funny little stressful things that happen when we tell lies to other people and we tell lies to ourselves, so, yeah. But again, its at least we know its fiction. Seth yes its nice that its fiction. You know, its been proven that its fiction. So, we can relax about that. Seth you actually used to be more in the facts game than the fiction game you were a journalist for a while and i heard that you actually wanted to be a diplomat yep seth obviously, one would think an actor is a very different path, but youve claimed that they have some similarities yeah, well, i mean basically basically i what i do is i explore my characters and i always place questions in my characters and i and thats what i did as a journalist you know, i tried to approach my characters from different angles and always tried to understand, you know, where they come from and what theyre feeling, and also the perception of the people around them, so and i also wanted, you know, as a journalist, i wanted to explore human nature im obsessed with the Human Experience and the extent of the Human Experience, so as an actor im doing pretty much the same, but through fictional characters and ive had, you know, which i think its in the end, you know, your sensitivities, in the end, they collide ive played a lot of real characters based on real people, so in a way i think that is kind of like a meta interview that i do to my characters. And im still getting to know the right people traveling around and having great conversation which is what i always wanted both as a journalist and as a diplomat as well seth i think i first became familiar with your work in carlos which is a perfect example of both playing a real person and getting to see the world, which is i highly recommend thank you seth i know its a ways back now, but a fantastic show. Thanks. Seth you obviously work with an incredible cast here and one of the things about the undoing is as you mentioned, theres lies were trying to figure out what is happening three episodes have aired. How often are friends and family trying to get details out of you, especially since you know how its going to end . The whole time. The whole time everybody everybody is texting me and but its funny cause people want to know and at the same time they dont want to know. You know its like, edgar, tell me already and at the same time, no, no. Dont tell me yet. Not just now. So its a beautiful contradiction. I love to see them, you know, in that state of mind, you know its great because i know who did it. You know and the show is so well written that when i was reading it, i changed my subject on almost every like every half episode i thought it was somebody else seth well, thats certainly how it feels to watch it one of the secret bonuses of watching the show is that it takes place in new york. I think it probably, based on the time of year you filmed it, one of the last shows that was filmed before everything shut down yeah, its basically a love letter to new york city. Yes. As you say it was one of the last shows that was shot before the pandemic so you get very nostalgic when you see it. You know because who knows . I mean, i think i dont know. I mean im very positive and im very optimistic were going to get through this and were going to get out of this pandemic for sure its going to happen its happened before so were going to pull through, im sure. But at the same time i feel like the world is going to be very different, so in a way i feel glad and new york is such an iconic city that it has its so iconic in story telling that i feel very, very happy. Please welcome back to the show, Tanehisi Coates how are you tanehisi . Hey, hows it going nice to be here, seth. Seth its always great to see you. For my money youve written some of the best journalistic pieces on the presidency, on the country over the last decade you obviously have laid out your differences of opinion with joe biden over the years yet also made it very clear that hes a better choice if the other choice is donald trump based on that im assuming you were not celebrating in the streets on saturday, but how did you feel about the people that were i wasnt. I was not celebrating in the streets. Thats not something i would do. Thats not how i interact with the world. That actually is not even any reflection on joe biden. I understand the people who were its been a tough four years i totally, totally get it. I do worry that maybe we do not know how dark its about to get, you know, again, really, really quickly. But at the same time, people are human beings i understand it. I get it you know, trump was a different you know, magnitude, you know, of corruption and a threat to the state and to democracy so i understand it i understand it. It wouldnt be what i would do, but i get it seth i want to talk about the sort of two different sides of this that i think people are weighing, which is, one and youve said about donald trump youre not necessarily a racist if you vote for him, but his racism is not disqualifying for you if you vote for him thats right. Seth and he got more votes than he did last time. On the other hand you have joe biden, you have Kamala Harris got more votes than anyone. So how do you sort of see the two working in concert um well, you know, i dont know its distressing that donald trump got more votes. I think we had just a record level of participation so the sheer amount of americans that were involved in the process was beyond anything that wed ever seen i think thats a good thing. You know i would prefer a world where more people voted and my side lost the argument to a world where the other side worked to suppress the numbers of people who voted and we lost because of that democracy, you know, you dont win every battle, you know, in a democracy, and thats fine so i was heartened by that i know how to deal with losing the argument you just go back you figure it out. You try to make the argument again. So, you know, while on some level it is, you know, depressing and theres all sorts of things i can say about the appeal, you know, that trump ultimately had and what that says about the country i think more people participating is a good thing. Im not sure that, you know, the party in power right now currently believes that. Seth i think its safe to say they dont believe that. Hey, i want to talk to you im going out on a limb there. Seth i want to talk to you about the fact that not just, between the world and me is about to be a tv show, but now the water dancer is going to be a film. What is it like for you to turn over your work to people that will then adapt it for a different medium so difficult. Very difficult with between the world and me i had the great luxury of turning it over to a very, very old friend of mine, kamilah forbes, who goes back to my days at Howard University so that was pretty easy and she did a staging here in new york that i thought, you know, went off pretty well. So i trust her implicitly. Shes also my wifes best friend so that makes all of that very, very easy. Seth yeah, yeah. To do you know, as for the water dancer, im going to be the one writing the screen play and doing the adaptation so that shows you about how much i trust people to adapt the work so for good or for ill, you know, well find out how that goes seth you know, another thing you did a lot of the ground work on and weve talked about this before, but you had this incredible run on the black panther comic book series this was before it was a film. And you also mentioned knowing people from your howard days you knew Chadwick Boseman from your howard days as well what was that whole journey like well, you dont know that youre on a journey and so its only with his regrettable passing that, you know, ive become wistful and begun to think about it you know, i met chad, wildly enough, when i was a student journalist at the newspaper and he was leading a protest at the university and actually leading the protest with kamilah forbes, who is adapting between the world and me so the way that these worlds come together. And i was a journalist at that time so i was reporting on what was a student takeover and chad was one of the leaders if not the leader so i knew him as, you know, a student and a young man of really strong principle. I also knew him as an artist, not just as an actor, but as a writer as a director at that time he is the last person in the world that i would have thought would become who he became, not because of any lack of talent. Not because of any, you know, lack of ability or intellect or anything like that but chad was so principled, man. He wanted what he wanted and he wanted it how he wanted it you know, that was going to be it it is shocking to me to watch what he ultimately became and yet when he was chosen to be black panther, i couldnt think of anybody who would be better because even back in our howard days he had that same sort of regal bearing that he brought to tchalla. It wasnt a total reach for chad to do that and its a huge, huge loss to see him gone seth you saw him, i guess it was probably at the premier of black panther is this the photo we have of you guys together oh, you guys blew that up i did, yes yes, thats myself, my wife and chad yeah seth thats fantastic. And it really is what a journey to have been in college with somebody and then sort of help i dont know, rewrite the character that made him so famous. Yeah. It was such a coincidence too. It was like weird. Like i, you know, from my perspective, i you know, wanted to be a comic book writer when i was a kid, but i never thought it was actually going to happen and i know the strongest part of chad was, you know, the writing and directing part here he becomes this huge leading man. You know, the night that picture was taken, it was at the premier and i saw him, you know, across the room and he, you know, had this he never changed. The celebrity part of him actually never changed who he was. And he looked like he did not enjoy being in a giant party surrounded by a bunch of people he didnt know and my thinking was, you know, having had about. 001 of a taste of that, im not even going to go over and talk to chad ill see chad when i see him my wife was so excited and went over and talked to him, and he came over, and wanted to take this picture, and talk and everything he was always just so good about that sort of thing i obviously didnt know at the time that he was sick. Seth that part of it is so tragic and so retroactively retrospectively i should say, so impressive what he was going through. Yeah. He carried it. You know, and whatever pain that he was going through, which i assume to be quite considerable. He carried it.
