Neighborhood to me itself. Fires are burning. Just like a typical home after glass fire. Home, is there land in between at last check it has contained 2500 acres, of course those them, is it a suburb. Its your typical numbers will grow. Also battlinboysen and subdivision. Theres not even a half a plot between the homes. Its your standard subdivision shady fire. We do have Live Team Coverage and with that comes the for you on the dangerous challenge of those homes being so close. Situation playing out in the north bay. We want to thank you for joining you can see the guys standing in between the homes really kind of us early this morning in the bay looking at that natural gas as we bring you the breaking news thats happening right now. Spot, that is really, really im marcus washington. Going from where those and im laura garcia. Firefighters are standing. But i think from what im lets check in with cierra seeing it looks like there are about six houses right next to johnson. Look at this, this is a neighborhood in santa rosa. Each other all burning. Homes burning behind you. This is heartbreaking, cierra. Its really, really awful. I dont know how else to reporter heartbreaking doesnt even begin to describe describe it. Its really sad. What youre seeing, this is your but on the other side of the typical subdivision driving up, street, some of the houses are there are houses on both sides still standing. Of this street, really just one house is completely untouched. Burning me, a family homeengul. Flames jumping freeways, flames jumping streets, thats all it right now, im on Mountain Hawk, takes for someones home, someones investment, to burn. Your typical subdivision, but right now, there are several dangerous out here. Engines here working to knock down that blaze. Absolutely. Weve been standing here for cierra, talk to us about the about five minutes and this conditions out there. House has really, really become you have your mask on for many reasons. What is it like out there . More engulfed. There was an engine just pulled can you smell gas at all in. You dont smell gas, you do up, theyre working to knock down this flame. Hear that hissing of natural another truck behind it and it gas. I can tell you its very warm looks like its starting to hit and its still really early. The tree which makes a little nervous, but this is a home on the last fire i covered, i dont remember being this hot this Mountain Hawk, we heard a little early. Theres a lot of smoke in the pop, not sure what that was, but air coming up to the subdivision, there were some it looks like firefighters are points where it was difficult to see because the air was so extinguishing it but driving up, there were several homes that smokey, there are those little appeared just like this, family bits of ash in the air, i think that its going to be the heat homes completely engulfed. Thats going to be an issue for i did see appeared to be the s the firefighters. Its pretty warm already. Thing to do right now because as i can only imagine with the rest you can see this is a very, very of the gear its going to be large fire. Pretty tough for them. Right now were still working to but its dry and you can see the get information on if there were ash in the air, rough conditions any folks still in any of these homes. I know they were told to out here. Thats how quickly those evacuate. I have seen several different embers can fly as well. Fire departments right here, cierra, take cover. We want to check in with the santa rosa with water on that fire. Next to me i think this is meteorologist, talking about the warmth out there already. Sonoma county, several agencies concerns about these winds. Working together to knock down what are we in store for this fire. This is the scene in this neighborhood, houses like just weatherwise in. Continue to be really hot like this, up and down the road there today. Temperatures still in the 90s completely engulfed. And were in the upper 80s. My thoughts going out to these another look at the general area homeowners, these families, of where those fires are burning watching their homes completely for more specific information engulfed. Its just really tough to watch. You should definitely check out its disheartening. It really is. The nbcbayarea app. Make sure youre safe as well, because we know how these fires were also taking a look at turn so quickly. Critically low humidity, what about people getting out, relatively humidity now in the though, you saw people taking Single Digits in some of those pictures . I did see two people taking areas. Today, were looking at relative humidity below 20 . Pictures, they didnt have the that makes those fires spread yellow jacket, they didnt have very rapidly. Anything that would separate very high concern especially in them from firefighters, so they the north bay as we go through seem to be regular people, not the forecast going into this evening its still going to be sure how that happened, when i was coming in i was stopped very dry and when you factor in several times, you know, i had the temperatures will be in the 90s and even over 100s it makes to show my reden shls, if youre out here this isnt the place erratic fire conditions for the rest of the bay area, well see you want to be. The smoke coming in. On the way up here, you saw well have unhealthy air dozens of engines and the air is quality, in the areas in those really, really full with ash. Fire zones and it moves toward the bay and the coast as well as the fire can turn into a the east bay even down to santa dangerous situation. Not where you want to be right now. Clara valley, unhealthy air Cierra Johnson. Quality for today. Once again the heat is the other well come back to you in just a issue, we do have the heat advisory that continues today. Thank you. We want to look at whats that will be in effect until 7 00 this evening. Happening wi we reach close to 100 degrees happening with this forecast for today, extreme heat today. But what about wind . Along the bay, in the 80s and thats always a big concern we n 90s and by tomorrow were going have fires like this. To see some upper 90s even this we have some high winds and some of the upper elevations heat advisory will be allowed to that are fanning those flames. Expire. Today, looking at our these fires have exploded in size during the overnight hours, temperatures and the. Conditions well see, going into the noon hour, were seeing some something that weve continued low 90s around napa, danville to watch. We have really hot temperatures, take a look at this, were at around 84 degrees. 4 00 in the morning and its 88 yesterday the temperatures degrees. Yesterday in the evening it was ramped up quickly especially for still in the upper 90s and these the afternoon hours. Winds coming in not feeling it so much in some of the valleys napa, 103. But its keeping some of the ash those temperatures will remain and the embers mostly to the very dangerous today, and you think about the firefighters who are out there trying to get some south and southwest its even more intense as we can see it containment today dealing with being picked up on the radar and temperatures in the 90s and even the satellite imagery by the over 100 degrees with all that bright white were seeing here, equipment on and then our winds most likely the ash being are also whipping, which could make those fires spread in brought into santa rosa and different directions, so a lot to watch for here today. Pushing off towards the east. Well continue to monitor the we have the fire danger, the red weather conditions going into flag warning that continues for this afternoon. More heat continues for the rest today. It has been extended until 9 00 of the week. Lets head over to mike, youve this evening that means that the National Weather service been keeping an eye on the road believes that our winds will conditions as well as those stay high enough for these flames to continue to spread closures. I have. Until later this evening, so the commute is fine right now. Really hard to see that as well south of the bay bridge. As we have very critically low on the map, i marked santa rosa, humidity as well as these hot where it says rosa, thats temperatures around these fire zones. As we look at our forecast for highway 12 going through the the wind speeds for today, thats going to be something skyhawk area. That well have to watch very dave cannon talking about what closely because the winds coming he said. In from the areas south of the Cierra Johnson is out there as well in skyhawk area showing the gulf, from the north bay, the wind is coming in from the north flames growing and growing. An incredible sight there. And northwest, that makes it very dangerous for the spread of definitely a situation you need those fires and when you have to avoid if youre in any way those variable winds it makes it thinking about going up toward hard for those firefighters to the area. Get in an area where they can as we zoom in, you want to avoid get some containment. This, the local road closures later this even. Ing as well as throughout the and we have silverado trailing day tomorrow, there will be a shift in the wind, a little bit wider, but still breezy, but affected. That might cause the fire to be careful there. Spread in a different direction. Lot of area to avoid in the a southerly wind may push those north bay. Again, the note we have safety fires to the north. First. Well take care of information so, thats something that well for you. You follow the local continue to monitor throughout information. If they told you get out of the today as well as those hot area, by all means, we do that, temperatures. Well talk about that in the right in. Forecast coming up. Its so important to and a mike, how is it looking for people trying to evacuate their good description to show the homes right now. People that map. The major freeways are moving smoothly, last night the updates what were talking about three fires that are burning right now during the fires, it jumped a in the north bay prompting all major roadway in the north bay, of these evacuations, some of a look at most of the bay, and the most terrifying and really as you would expect, easy heartbreaking images from the fire are coming in from social driving, even getting toward the north bay. Media. Joining us on phone is matthew henderson. He goes out and takes some of highway 37, no problem. These pictures. The top of the map, look at that, those are the developments matthew, i understand youre that we have had over the last actually in the skyhawk weekend here. Neighborho santa rosa, local road closures. Neighborhood, you captured some structures burning near the intersection of Mountain Hawk farther up, toward clear lake, and san ramone. The areas were continuing to yeah, i headed over to santa watch the development happens. As cierra talked about, she was rosa, you know, the fire kind of settled down, we thought we were talking about how she had of going to be okay in the skyhawk course had to go through security to get up into the subdivision. All of a sudden there was wind area, its scattered situation, shift, the fire spotted over and its dark, folks in the area who just as cierra was saying, home should not supposed to be there, after home started going up, not a lot of firefighters could do stay out of the area if its not about it. It really illustrates how quickly these fires can turn. Safe, clearly the areas that are absolutely. When they tell you to evacuate, blockade, dont go near. You know, this is my 15th year back to you. Absolutely, mike. Doing this, when they say lot of these areas have been evacuate, get out. Evacuated. The evacuation orders in effect get your pets and your family and get out because it can turn right now for sonoma county, the so quickly. Did you see people heeding that warning, trying to pack up areas under evacuation orders their things and go . Right now. I did and unfortunately, you portions of santa rosa also being evacuated. Know, they wait until the last we saw Cierra Johnson there minute and then, you know, you right now, some of those homes get things like highway 12 being fully engulfed in flames. Completely backed up, taking 20 some evacuation orders that we minutes to get out of the have in napa county the area in subdivision, as soon as they put blue, this is the area thats those warnings out you got to get out. Under mandatory evacuation orders. Youve mentioned youve done now, weve got some new this for sa years, in the past few years, weve seen the amount video, residents of the oakmont of fires grow in california, its very concerning. Gardens assisted Living Center it definitely is. Youll remember in 2017, the evacuated. These were the flames from shady tubs fire blew through this same fire, you see the glow there in the background, people are just kind of area, the carr fire trying to board buses that they before that, it does seem to be brought in to take them out to getting worse. Safety. In total, 120 residents had to what is it like for you be evacuated from that facility seeing these people head out, by bus. Its part of a larger retirement evacuating and youre the guy going in. Honestly for me, i have the community that includes 4500 training and the knowledge, although that can go all the people. Those three major wildfires window when you get a wind burning right now north bay prompting a lot of evacuations. Shift. For me, you get an adrenaline. Joining us on the phone is freelance photographer, dave n i enjoy getting information out to the people especially in those evacuated areas. Right. Cann cannon. That tells the purpose of why reporter good morning. You do it, not just the thrill i can tell you that this is fire of getting these pictures its is moving fast. Really to give people wind has been erratic as information about these discussed. The humidity is super low. Evacuation areas. I can interact with my the fire behaves in ways that it followers with social media. I run these live streams for doesnt when its higher. Hours at a time. It happened at the end of st. Helena road. Sometimes this is the first look and came over the ridge and kind theyll have of their neighborhood. To see what remains. Of expensive subdivisions up there. The fire came down, the wind thank you for joining us. Pushed it down. Be safe. Be safe. Control. I can see that youre very close to those flames. Talk to me about what was we are getting new images of burning, at this point, the structures, even homes burning right now. Flames im looking at that you there have been waves of evacuation orders coming overnight as gusty winds fuel got for us, this looks like its the mostly vegetation, but close to flames. Several neighborhoods in santa structures, did you see any rosa are now evacuated structures catch fire . Yes, definitely, maybe a here s a look at where the thre fires are there have been waves of dozen homes that i saw catch on evacuation orders coming as gusty winds fueling those fire. First it came over the ridge and flames. Several neighborhoods in santa it was only burning the rosa are now evacuated. Vegetation, the trees, some here is a look at where the pretty heavy timber up there, and a lot of the trees are three fires are burning, it all started with the glass fire which is burning near st. Helena torching and that cast embers and calistoga, also the boysen forward. Wow. Creating problems for the fire and shady fire. Firefighters because, you know, thank you for joining us early this morning on today in basically it would jump over the the bay. We want to bring you that breaking News Coverage as it is happening this morning. Ridge, try to take a stand im marcus washington. And im there. It wasnt working. Tough job for those firefighters. Lets talk about evacuations, a lot of those evacuations in those areas, did you see a lot of people leaving that area in. Yes, it was mostly stop and go, mostly stop traffic for maybe two, three hours when they started issuing those large evacuation orders. As people leaving their homes with what they can grab, just filling all the side streets coming out to the main artery, it was really stop and go, quite hectic. Youre trained to handle work in conditions like this. Talk about how close youre getting to these fires. We can see the trees blowing in some of the video that you have for us. Thats a good question. I wear protective gear of course, i have been trained, i with was a volunteer firefighter way back in the day, you know, you kind of train to stay in an area where theres space around you, yeah, fires jump over you, you kind of prepare for it, you have to look 360 degrees all the time. You get close and you shoot and then you get the heck out and find yourself a safer spot. Talk to me about the structures. One looked like a barn. Homes. What were these structures that you were getting pictures of in. One had a barn attached, you can hear some popping. Some with the ammunition going off, i heard some fireworks go off today and then propane tanks are very common out there, because sometimes in rural areas they use a lot of propane, they catch on fire they kind of explode quite loudly, it kind of makes you nervous, but you get used to it but its still nervewracking. Dave, were looking at pictures in the skyhawk neighborhood in santa rosa right now, lot of those homes fully engulfed in flames. Dave, i know your out there doing a job, youre prepared and trained the handle whats going on, but talk about it emotionally, when you see homes, these are peoples lives. Well, i kind of like, the First Responders you kind of, im not a First Responder anymore, but you try to kind of remove yourself youre there to do a job. I come back and shoot the aftermath and thats when it really hits you. Ash and rubble. It does kind of impact you, you try to count your blessings and hope they can do the same. Right now, were looking at pictures of structures fires happening right now in santa rosa. This is the skyhawk neighborhood. Firefighters certainly working hard. Dave on the phone with us right now. A prixlance photographer out there for us. You can see just the area engulfed in flames, trees, brush, and certainly we can see how the wind is picking up in certain parts. And dave, as youre leaving that area kind of how do you maneuver out because you never know what these flames are going to do . Yeah, thats true. You just one minute youll be in an area that is, you know, its pretty far away, ten minutes later youll drive through the same area, there will be fire on both sides of the road. The smoke impedes your vision quite a lot. You have to really focus and go slow and be meticulous and try not to get yourself in trouble. For evacuees, too, theyre not used to that kind of stuff, either. Theyre the people that need to get out as quickly as possible. Because they can find themselves in the exact kind of danger without knowing how to cope with that kind of stuff. What are you thinking about as youre shooting this video . A lot to deal with whether its safety or just concern about whats happening. Im just, whats going through my mind im trying to get the shots so people can understand whats happening within the, you know, fire lines and try to be as safe as possible but get the best possible shot and come back home with my family and be as safe as possible. Wow. Dave cannon for us this morning, getting some of these amazing shots, seeing some of the destruction happening this morning, dave, stay safe. Well get back to you a little bit later in the show. All right, dave was talking about what it feels like driving through some of these zones, this is what it looks like, a harrowing drive out of the fire zone, all caught on video. This is recorded by a napa county sheriff deputy trying to evacuate those in the path of the glass fire earlier yesterday morning. Debris rained down on the road and cars, trees and brush on the side of the road already fully engulfed. Sheriff posted the video with a warning, never wait until the last second to evacuate. Its so important. Thats what hoping for the people in skyhawk neighborhood near santa rosa this morning. Cierra johnson has been witnessing homes fully engulfed in flames. Yes, good morning. Were still on mountainview, were pointing out our camera at the house next door, theres nothing left of this home, you can see that kind of ball of fire there, in your lower left hand portion of your screen, thats where the natural gas is bubbling up, i mean, that ball of fire just really going and you pan a little to the right, i think this is just speaks to this fire, theres that fountain right there in the driveway, near those firefighters and its the only thing left standing with this home. These firefighters have been standing here, working to knock this fire i
