Well, guys, tonight was the first night of the Democratic National convention. It was pretty different from what weve seen in the past. An unprecedented Democratic National convention will begin at what will be an almost entirely Virtual Event the party will officially nominate joe biden and Kamala Harris to lead the president ial ticket. Jimmy yeah, it was the first night of the virtual Democratic National convention because nothing quite fires up americans like long speeches over zoom. [ laughter ] thats right both the democratic and Republican National conventions will be held without crowds, which is a bummer because the best part of these things isnt the speeches, its the people in the crowds dancing like idiots [ laughter ] jimmy i like that. For the first night of the Democratic Convention there was walltowall coverage on cnn and msnbc. Meanwhile, on fox news there was a threehour special called Kamala Harris where do you think she was born . [ laughter ] each night of the convention has its own theme. For example, tonights theme was we the people. Tomorrow night is Leadership Matters and wednesday is, please dont switch to netflix. [ laughter ] well, earlier tonight Bernie Sanders gave a virtual speech at the convention it was pretty exciting while bernies speech was streaming live, so was he. Questlove oh [ laughter ] jimmy it was weird seeing bernie do a virtual speech he ended up by going, thats my speech, be sure to smash that like button [ laughter ] gucci [ laughter ] but the biggest speaker of the night was former first lady, Michelle Obama her message was pretty simple. She was like, please win so i dont have to run in 2024. Please. If you missed Michelle Obamas speech, dont worry, melania will deliver the same speech at next weeks Republican Convention [ laughter ] well, the Virtual Convention rolls on tomorrow. And even though its all happening remotely, its still looks like an exciting night here is the schedule first at 9 00, remarks from former acting attorney general sally yates. Then at 9 30, remarks from congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez then at 10 00, remarks from senator Chuck Schumer. Then at 10 01, a break to help Chuck Schumer reconnect his wifi [ laughter ] then at 10 02, schumer calls his daughter to ask for the wifi password, but she doesnt answer so he leaves a message asking how to send a text [ laughter ] next at 10 03, facetime between i. T. Guy and schumer, where schumer holds the phone up to his ear because he doesnt realize its a video call. [ laughter ] 10 05, schumer reconnects, but its using his cellphone, not his wifi, so he panics because he doesnt have unlimited data 10 07, schumer says hes restarting the router while actually just turning on a a dehumidifier finally at 10 10, Bernie Sanders comes on and says, oh, the hell with him, ill speak again. So, sounds like a big night. Well, the other big story right now is the Postal Service. People are worried that budget cuts are going to hurt mailin voting watch this friday, a number of states reported officials got letters from the Postal Service warning them the agency will not be able to fulfill requests for mailin ballots in time for this novembers election jimmy trump was like, hey, if the states got those letters from the Postal Service, how bad could it be . [ laughter ] this is crazy. We cant send in mailin ballots . Meanwhile, americans can get drunk, go on amazon, and eight hours later there is a new pair of sunglasses for their ferret waiting at their front door. [ laughter ] but in response to all this, nancy pelosi and her fellow democrats are fighting back. Listen to this House Speaker nancy pelosi announced she is calling back lawmakers from their summer recess to deal with the crisis at the Postal Service. House democrats have launched an investigation over whether the Trump Administration is intentionally undermining the agency ahead of the president ial election. Jimmy thats right the house is cutting its vacation short to deal with this when they heard lawmakers were flying back to washington, the Postal Service was like, would you mind bringing this sack of mail . [ laughter ] you know 2020 is crazy when congressional hearings about the Postal Service are mustsee tv meanwhile, trump held a press conference from his Bedminster Golf Club on saturday and bragged about the enthusiasm for his campaign from a strange voting block i just looked there are thousands of boats in lakes, rivers and oceans thousands and thousands of boats. Its called, boaters for trump. Boaters for trump pence. Theres signs all over some of the boats have ten flags on them. They are incredible. Jimmy yeah because everyone knows all Elections Come down to the boater vote. [ laughter ] i love all boaters. And remember to boat for me on election day every boat counts. So meanwhile, trump is still angry about his news coverage. Yesterday he tweeted that people should start watching oann, a rightwing cable channel known for spreading conspiracy theories. Well, they have some very interesting shows and you can tell that theyre fans of trump. For example, there is whiteish. [ laughter ] next up, theres the marvelous mr. Mnuchin. Oh, here is some good news it looks like there is a new covid test on the way that could be a game changer. Check it out federal officials have just given emergency approval to whats being called a groundbreaking new saliva test. It was developed by researchers at Yale University the test, expected to cost just ten bucks. You are also expected to get results in a matter of hours, not days jimmy yeah the new tests will make it extra weird when patients show up, like, nah, i prefer the cotton swab straight to the brain, please. [ laughter ] yeah, you can take the test at home or if you are in a hurry, just go to the spitting section of the walmart pharmacy and, finally, this is crazy, i heard about a 12yearold in australia who was just caught doing something pretty unexpected watch this three minors were caught gambling at an australian casino, including a 12yearold girl jimmy yeah the girl was like, it aint gamble when you have a system. [ laughter ] even weirder, her dad was across the street in a ball pit at chuck e. Cheese we have a great show for you guys tonight her latest standup special was just nominated for an emmy, Tiffany Haddish is here. I am your host Clyde Darwell next up from 1946, passion on the prairie. A thrilling frontier romance starring van westmore, constance pigeon and everett zuker. Though a Huge Box Office success in its day, its worth noting this film is a product of its time. By todays standards, it contains outdated, insensitive portrayals of african americans. But keeping that in mind, we hope you could look past those flaws and enjoy this american classic. Which i should also note, is offensive to native americans, asian americans, lebanese americans, the inuit, and estonian americans but having said that, its a a vital piece of film history that is to be treasured. So, sit back, relax, and also quick note about the love scenes in this film, they dont all seem entirely, how you say, consensual grabbing women and kissing them by force, and when they resist, slapping them, was considered romantic in the 1940s. Now, not so much nevertheless, this movie remains a pinnacle of hollywoods golden age so pour yourself a tall soda and settle in for the splendid threehour spectacle, passion on the prairie. Wait, one more thing. I should warn viewers sensitive to this sort of thing, there is a graphic whale hunt midway through the film also, what some might consider gratuitous kicking of a beagle anyway, i think that covers it all. African americans, beagle kick, consent. Yeah, thats it. Now lets travel back to 1946 with the historic incomparable cherished cinema classic, passion on the prairie. Oh wait, i forgot a biggie. This movie is super sympathetic to nazis, which seems really late for 1946. So, here we go wait theres also a scene where a a nonbinary ranch hand is referred to by the improper pronoun, which actually seems way ahead of its time. You know what . Lets cut out the problematic scenes and show only parts of the movie that arent offensive now. Does that sound good passion on the prairie. Roll it. Wow, they dont make em like that anymore. I am not going to be on any red carpets. And if i do have to be on something, i always put me in wigs anyways the wigs sit better. [ laughter ] and so i was just like, yeah, lets just go for it and i did it online so everybody could see because i wanted to know what i look like from my head to toe. Like, who am i from head to toe . You know, every religion talks about knowing thyself. And i know where all my moles are except for the ones that were on my head. And now i know i got two moles on my head its a little wrinkly in the back you know and when its all the way gone jimmy you know you its very smooth. My head kind of feels like a a penis. Its kinda nice jimmy okay, ill take it im learning new things about myself every day now that im bald headed, you know, like jimmy i know you did standup again i want to say how did it feel to be in front of a crowd . And granted, everyone in on masks, so you couldnt hear the laughter right away, but you could see it everybody would get squinty eyes and they laugh and their heads are bobbing and hands are clapping and so you find new cues to accept and i just by the end of it, i felt like a care bear. I felt like i was doing, like, the care bear stare where youre just like, yes, jokes, jokes, jokes [ laughter ] jimmy everybody is getting beamed out oh, i love it. [ laughter ] so amazing. Jimmy the last time you were here we talked about your special, black mitzvah, and it was right before it came out. And now it is emmynominated, black mitzvah. So congratulations, you got nominated for an emmy thank you you know, its so awesome to be recognized by my peers thats, like, amazing. And the same day that i found out i felt very grateful but i went to the mailbox and there was all these handwritten notes from these foster youth that i have been talking to over the quarantine. I have been zoomcalling with a bunch of foster kids in Different Group homes. And it was 40 messages, 40 little handwritten notes and cards, and they like drew on them and colored them, and that was the best award ever. Like, that was better than anything and, like, when i get down, i just open those up and read them its like, thats better than any trophy i could ever get. Jimmy oh, i love it. To be recognized by, you know, our youth, our future. Jimmy good for you for doing that thats so cool that you do that and thats the reward. Its so cool i love it. Yeah, its great. Jimmy how has your has your standup changed since the pandemic and, obviously, the protests and for social justice . Well, definitely. You know, people are always asking me, tiffany, what can we do . What can we do to make change . And what ive incorporated in my comedy is something that i think that would work. That would change the systemic racism and the injustices that we all suffer. And i think the key to it is all women just stop having sex everyone just close their legs, just shut it down. Men will get i know this has happened in history before wars have stopped because of this if every woman just said, thats it, im closing my legs until justice is served, until there is change, then things will be great. Now, the karens will be overwhelmed because they dont want change, right the karens want things to stay the same so the karens are going to be so overwhelmed and after so long there going to be like, look, okay, we got to start voting, people. Karens are going to be out there getting people registered to vote. Theyre going to be talking to black people, spanish people theyre going to be talking to karens are going to be like, look, i know, i was talking crazy a few months ago jimmy now but i cannot handle all this sex that i got to do because everybody shut their legs closed so, please, please register to vote please, lets make some change jimmy wow, that is the way to do it thats the way to get some change we had this fun game last time we played wheel of opinions before do you mind if could we do it again yeah, id love to id love to do it again. She now stars in the hbo series, Lovecraft Country, which airs sundays at 9 00 p. M here she is, Jurnee Smollett [ applause ] jurnee, thank you so much for being here, i appreciate it. Man, im so excited to be here i love your show, by the way jimmy oh, youre the best. Im a huge fan. Jimmy thank you. Also because youve got one of my favorite people a part of your crew. Jimmy i was going to ask, i was just going to ask this because i know this is our first time meeting, but youre friends with questlove yeah, man ahmir and i go way back to myspace days jimmy myspace . [ laughter ] what thats how we met jimmy talk to me about this he like reached out to me on myspace after the premiere of gridiron gang, which was so random, and wanted me to like host the night before the Grammys Party that they do and hes such, you know, this music genius, you know, that weve been attached at the hip ever since he is literally one of my closest friends. Jimmy oh my gosh, hes the greatest i mean, has he introduced you to like a lot of new music oh, my gosh weve had crazy experiences together through music he took me to my very first Stevie Wonder concert. I was literally crying we went backstage, he introduced me to mr. Wonder himself, and there was like a little jam session, you know but ahmir and i have had like crazy every thanksgiving, because he came over to my house one year for thanksgiving, and my family loves to cook. So we all make, like, you know, a bunch of food. And he was a little interested in the fact that it took so long like, we didnt actually eat until 10 00 at night and so every thanksgiving he will text me and my family at 10 00 on the dot and say, yall eat yet . [ laughter ] jimmy thats a great story every thanksgiving he does that like clockwork, man rude jimmy see, hes unbelievable, i love him a lot of people first saw you as denise on full house. You were 5 then. Do people still bring that up to you oddly enough, they do i hope ive changed a little bit physically, man. Please tell me i dont have the body of a 5yearold jimmy absolutely not, no i mean, its a little strange that they still bring it up. But honestly, for me its, you know, it was part of my childhood, but in like a small way. It would be like someone asking you, hey, were you the kid that played at that small park in Little League when you were 5 . Jimmy yeah so, its like i dont really remember, but i do remember. But it was like a hobby for me, you know jimmy oh, my gosh. Well, that hobby turned into a a very successful career quickly. By the age of 11, i think you won a Critics Choice Award so i mean, you know what youre doing. You have a 3yearold of your own, a little boy, right i do, hunter. Jimmy hunter is he going to get involved in the business i dont know. Hes very creative so well see hes very critical of my skills, i do have to say jimmy oh, really yeah. You know, i he loves peppa pig. And during like the i mean, come on, peppa pig, shes the ish, okay . Jimmy love peppa like we did we on the promo tour for birds of prey we had a stop in london, and i went to the local toy store and was like, im gonna buy everything peppa pig, this is so authentic jimmy yes. Im going to be mom of the year, pack my suitcase with everything bring it back, and i like do this whole presentation when i finally get back home. Open up the peppa pig, do the peppa pig voice. He stops me and hes like, mommy, no. Jimmy really and i was like, whats the matter . He said, dont do that voice. And i said, why . He said, its not good. Youre not very good at it. Jimmy wow. Critic when i tell you, it made me so insecure, i was literally thinking i needed to go and hire a dialect coach to work on my peppa pig voice so that my son jimmy yeah, no, ive had this thought in my head, too cause i try to do scoobydoo. I do shaggy and they go, yeah, its not quite there you need to work on it a little bit, yeah. Not there jimmy not quite there yet. Were good, dad. Yeah, im not impressed. Thats hilarious theyre so honest though. Jimmy you have to be, right . You use your voice a lot on social media to speak out against Racial Injustice and participating in black lives matter protests. Activism has been a part of your life since you were a kid is that true yeah. My parents, you know, my parents met in the Civil Rights Movement my mom, growing up i would hear stories about them working with angela davis and all these legendary civil rights activists. So, yeah, i remember my mom having us on the street corner, you know, with signs during the uprising here in 1992 after the verdict from when the cops were acquitted from beating rodney king. And so i remember my mom taking me into the voting booth and having me vote myself. So now im super excited any time i get to vote like at the dinner table she was always talking about politics or, you know, wanting us to serve at a very young age. And i think it comes, honestly, from my grandmother, who grew up when my, you know, growing up my mom would tell me stories about my grandmother, who cleaned white folks homes for a living and she was the first black miss galveston she was a single mom raising four kids in the south and she would go to work every single day with her dress ironed, and her makeup and hair done, because she wouldnt let them rob her of her dignity. Because even though they mistreated her, and even though they underpaid her, and neglected her, her dignity she had control over and my mom always wanted us to treat people who served with such respect because to her that was the greatest thing that you could be in life, was to be of service jimmy wow, thats interesting. Everyones got to be super proud of what youre doing i want to talk with Lovecraft Country because everyone has been waiting for this. And they were like, oh, my gosh and now the reviews are in i dont know if you read reviews, but youre 97 fresh on rotten tomatoes, which is awesome. What is the best way to describe the show . A wild adventure. Jimmy yeah you know, like, it really is whatever people think the show is, its not you know, its just completely wild and unexpected. Its audacious its really this moment in which, you know, what i love so much about Lovecraft Country is it takes this genre, this classic scifi horror genre, and then flips it on its head, and smacks it back at you and then centers black folks in the middle, which is so radical. And for me, as an artist, i love this genre, and ive honestly felt a little shut out by it because i didnt want to be the black chick killed on page 37, you know, in a horror film [ laughter ] and so now i get to do really cool things in this genre. You know, which is a lot of fun. Jimmy yeah and you do your own stunts, right . Or you do most of them yeah, with black canary i did most of my stunts, what they will allow. And same thing with Lovecraft Country. You know, i just try to train physically to embody the character because its such an extension of who she is. Im a stunt junkie jimmy you really are i love it jimmy oh, no, no im the opposite i was like if someones like, hey, i can do that for you. Im like, bye, go for it [ laughter ] you dont want to see me running. I mean, look at me im not an action guy. You dont want to see me shooting a gun no, no, no man, i love it.
