Mountains, highway 101. There may be foggy areas. Back to you. Thanks so much, mike. Our breaking news that were covering, this week will be critical more than 14,000 firefighters battle 17 major fire complexes sparked by lightning storms burning mostly in Northern California. The wildfires caused at least seven deaths statewide and destroyed at least 1,200 homes. And in the bay area there is a lot of ground to cover. Our team once again covering every inch of it this morning. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson is live in wine country where workers were nervously hunkered down there. But we begin with kris sanchez in Santa Cruz County. Were actually hearing from an evacuee. Reporter yeah. Weve been hearing a lot of these harrowing stories of how fast people had to pick up and leave. Sheriffs deputies are still looking for four people who are missing, reported missing from the evacuation area. That means no one knows whether they made it out or not. Maybe theyre among the 77,000 evacuees. We hope to hear some news about them when cal fire does the first update of the morning. The fire continued to grow overnight, burned more than 78,000 acres. It is still contained on 13 of the perimeter. We were told that was mostly along the northern part of the fire. Nearly 300 homes, businesses and other structures are gone. In this video you can hear the relief in the voice of one evacuee whose home is in the fire zone in boulder creek. Foster told us she knew local crews were doing the best they could to hold the local line but needed reinforcement which ultimately came from l. A. Oh, my god, l. A. Is here. Thank god. Reporter now as far as she knows her home is still standing. In this drone video you can see not everybody is so lucky. We saw homes burning actively last week by air. It is much worse. Cal fire will give us an update at 6 00 this morning. Well see if all the moisture in the air might have helped. Mike inouye mentioned patchy fog and we were seeing that rolling into town. In Scotts Valley, kris sanchez, today in the bay. All right, kris. I can only imagine a lot of those people who havent been able to return to their homes are just hoping theyre intact when they return. Thank you. Well, a crime Getting National attention. These images show a man investigators believe stole the wallet of the from a truck of the firefighter fighting the flames in Santa Cruz County. That truck was parked at a fire station in bonny doon. Investigators say he used the stolen credit card at the shell gas station and a safeway on 41st avenue. Wearing a giants hat and a black and white checkered facemask. Take a look at the screen, this is an image for you. Give santa cruz deputies a call if you know who that man is. Winery owners in wine country are very nervous this is what some are saying as they prepare for the most crucial time of the year. Usually they would be getting ready for harvest. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson live. It is squarely in the fire zone. Reporter yes, good morning. Folks here in healdsburg have been under that evacuation notice for about a week now and as the fires would come in people have been really nervous for a week, but were here with the owner who has really just had a birds eye view of everything going on in this area. I guess initially youve been through this before. How did you feel knowing things were picking up so quickly in this area . Well, i just worried about it and wanted to know where the fire was. The biggest worry if it came down the mountain, in the trees in places that can be hard to defend down little dirt roads and so forth. I would go up to the front of the fire on a daily basis on this little four wheeler and check it out and talk to the fire guys. Reporter what were they saying when you were having that conversation . Well, it was very serious. I remember going up there i think about three or four days ago and peterson, a retired firefighter kind of headed up the team up here on this whole road and on the side of the mountain. He was coming towards me in the car and i pulled off to the side. He stopped and he looked real grave. I said how is it going . He said not good. And i went up and i could see that the flames were all coming up and we had a lot of air support. Air support was really fantastic. A lot of airplanes coming in including these big 747s, these gigantic things dropping fire retardant. They did a really terrific job. It was just like a war zone up there. You could see big flames coming and coming up the canyon and the wind was directing it it was pretty frightening. There was one homeowner out there on the edge had a really great viewpoint. He built a tower next to his house for stargazing. And from that tower we could just see the whole area and what was going on. And we were just hoping the fire would continue to head south, which it mostly has. Of course its endangered a lot of people down this way and the firefighters had to make decisions about, well, what areas can we save and what areas do we have to let burn . Reporter you mentioned the wind being the issue. You didnt know which way it was going to turn. How did it feel knowing at any moment with just the shift of the wind you could be in danger, your business could be in danger . Absolutely a problem and its what i worried about. I tried to keep in touch with what was going on with the wind. First from the north because it was blowing all the smoke away from here and we had clear skies here even though you could see billowing smoke heading down that way. Later on when the winds started coming from the south we were a little concerned it was going to blow the fire around that side of the mountain which is what would have been really impossible to do much about because theres so much fuel there. It hadnt burned over since 1972 and is just a tangle of brush a. They did a tremendous job and were able to kind of direct the fire. By yesterday afternoon all that was left back there in a lot of areas was blackened areas, ash, and a few smoldering stumps. Reporter im glad to know everything out here is pretty good and you were able to keep an eye on things from your perspective. This has been going on for days now. That first warning was issued on wednesday. And here we are just a day away from when that first warning was issued and folks still kind of shaken up from what is going on. We are live out here in healdsburg, Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. Its really interesting. And next time we talk to him as well we would like to find out about the condition of the grapes. A lot of times the smoke is absorbed by some of the leaves. Interesting to see what could potentially change with the next harvest as well. Great job out there. Thanks so much, cierra. Well, more people near point reyes are packing up and getting out with a new Evacuation Order in effect for the woodward fire. Anyone living on silverhill road, fox drive and noren way need to leave immediately. The fires have burned close to 2,700 acres and is 5 contained. Maybe you saw those images of the damage of big basin state park near boulder creek. People have been fearing the worst here. We do have some good news to tell you this morning. A reporter headed deeper into the park says most of the old growth red woods seemed to have survived with the reserve escaping lasting damage. Some of those trees were close to 2,000 years old. Right now cal fire getting a lot of help from around the world to fight the fires. Along with help from local bay area teams. The Oakland Fire Department says it has crews fighting all three bay area fire systems. Tweeting out saying its crews are helping out with the scu fire. Everyone is keeping busy these days. Well, the smoke is still evident. It seems we get a little bit of clearing. I dont know what it is first thing in the morning. It certainly comes back. Yeah, and its because of that marine layer. It changes the direction of the wind. We also see a calmer wind during the Morning Hours and as were looking at the wind direction right now we have winds coming in from the south and we know that a lot of our bay area communities are seeing some of that smoke especially in the east bay but it may not be so bad in the south bay. Well continue to monitor our wind direction and wind speed. Of course it also has an impact on which direction those fires may be spreading. And, mike, getting out the door this morning, how is it looking for the commute . Kari, some fog floating around. No major issues. The evacuation zones and well talk about your main roadways for commute looking at the east bay where there is a crash. Five vehicles reported in this crash, san leandro about 580. This may be in the middle lane. I see some slowing right there. No major injuries. Chp to give us more detail. It may be over to the shoulder by now. Well track that. Construction crew clearing as you head down to the Golden Gate Bridge for south 101, laura, that should be cleared any second as far as the Speed Sensors go. Back to you. All right, thank you, mike. 5 11. Bracing for impact. Two powerful storms taking aim at the coast. Next on today in the bay the preparations under way as we track their path. And chinese negotiators said they were very close to meeting that first phase of their trade deal. Now this good news comes even as President Trump continues to rail against the chinese, accusing them of stealing america and causing the pandemic. China was an important part of the president s nomination acceptance speech in charlotte. Take a listen. But we took in billions from china. We never took in 10 cents from china, never took in 10 cents. China, for 25 years not only obama for 25 years china was taking in anywhere between 200 billion, with a b, and 550 billion f the United States. Now there are some corrections to be made there. As always we do not collect tariffs from the chinese. Thats not how tariffs work. Americans pay the tariffs on chinese products. And while we have, indeed, sent millions to china, we get stuff in return. Its not charity money. We buy clothes and iphones and Everything Else with a made in china sticker on it. We send money there, they send stuff back. Other news, San Francisco salesforce will be added to the 30 Companies Listed on the dow 30 industrials, quite an honor, after apple split stock making techs less influential on the index. Salesforce will be joined by amgen and honeywell. This takes effect next monday. These companies have been doing really well. San franciscos snowflake in san mateo, sumo logic in redwood city, all terrible names for companies, but theyre all filing paperwork for initial Public Offerings in tech in Northern California things are going really well for these young startups. Almost as if were saying, what pandemic . Amazon getting ready to bring its amazon go technology to whole foods, the cashierless system where you just grab what you want from the store and walk out and your credit card is never charged. Its easy to use. Im struggling to know how those cantaloupes, or once we get back to the hot bar food things theyve closed down, how the computers will measure that. I dont know. For consumer packaged goods its super easy. That makes me nervous. If you dont check out and pay for it there, it would feel weird for me at the beginning anyway. Imagine going with a whole bunch of kids. A whole bunch of kids grabbing candy bars and stuff. That you exactly. A lot of candy. Thank you. 5 18 right now. Happening nowinimal impact from Tropical Storm marco which made landfall along the gulf coast yesterday. Watch out for Tropical Storm laura, though, still inching closer and expected to reach hurricane strength. Laura is expected to make landfall late tomorrow night somewhere in texas or louisiana. Tropical storm warnings for the florida keys was lifted overnight but laura left its mark on the area bringing with it strong winds and heavy rain. In the meantime people along the coast are filling sandbags and boarding up in preparation. The National Hurricane center issued a hurricane watch and storm surge watch for parts of both states. Water could rise up to 11 feet during that surge. Back here at home the heat wave perhaps continues. Pretty oppressive weather lately, kari. Yeah, weve had really some hot weather, not a lot of relief from that and no relief from the smoke. And now just a slight shift in the wind really changes the direction of that smoke as well so there may be a couple hours during the day where we have some clearing but we can see the fog that has rolled into San Francisco also trapping in some of that smoke. It leads to unhealthy air quality when you have it pushed down closer to the ground. Lets head inland to pleasanton. Our temperature trend starts out with a few clouds this morning. Temperatures in the low 60s. And we will see some clearing but once again whether or not we see the sun depends on how thick the smoke is. As our temperatures make it into the low 80s by noon, eventually well reach into the upper 80s and low 90s for our interior valleys with san jose reaching 85 degrees. Were still looking at some mid90s further to the north, up to 95 in ukiah and in San Francisco reaching 67 degrees. Well see oakland today reaching 77. So there will be a slight cooldown for some spots thanks to that ocean breeze moving in. As we look at our overall weather pattern we still have this High Pressure over the Desert Southwest thats been causing this really warm air to surge in. Were not going to see that changing. Were still going to have some warm weather but at least well see the fog building near the coast once again and thats going to help cool it off for some spots. But our inland temperatures will stay in the 90s and gets slightly hotter with friday temperatures peaking at 96 degrees. Well talk more about that coming up. Mike, how is it looking with the patches of fog and smoke weve seen around the bay area . Those two factors combined, kari, stay away from areas you arent familiar with but thats also because Law Enforcement is asking to stay out of the area. Do mine those road closures. As far as the freeways for the commute, theyre moving all right in spots like the bay bridge toll plaza. Other spots, one in oakland, a five vehicle crash. What ive learned theres a motorcycle involved. The rider is up and on the right shoulder. Thats the first concern we have. Theres debris and a traffic break that will join you up. Everything is okay as far as your main commute goes. Back to you. Thank you very much, mike. Our team is staying on top of the breaking news. Reporter im Cierra Johnson in healdsburg where were keeping an eye on how this fire is continuously changing. This is a fire thats like one of those every 100 year fires you hear about. Like the every 100year flood. This is not your typical fire. Right now at 5 30, its a moment unlike any other for california. The states wildfires combined have burned an area the size of the grand canyon. And the bay area has the states two largest fires ever recorded. We have Live Team Coverage on the progress being made by firefighters. Today in the bay continues right now. A very good Tuesday Morning to you. Thanks so much for joining us. Im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Mike is keeping an eye on that commute, hopefully smooth sailing for us this morning. First meteorologist kari hall. We know its not smooth sailing when it comes to the air quality today. Yes, its going to be so smoky again today. Were starting out with temperatures that are cooler. Some more favorable weather conditions that will hopefully allow the fire crews to get more containment. Were starting out in the upper 50s in parts of the north bay. As we go into today were going to see that morning fog starting to clear out. Still that smoke lingering. And our temperatures will be reaching into the upper 70s and some 80s for much of the bay air inland valleys. Well talk more coming up in a few mince. Mike, how is it looking for the commute . Kari, well talk about everything except for the fire closures. Those are longstanding. Youll check waze, our partners there. We do want to call on the traffic incident for the morning commute over in oakland for eastbound 580. We still have lanes effectively closed because of a traffic break from keller down to the scene of the crash by the 98 avenue onramp. The motorcycle there is not involved in the crash. No injuries for that rider. No major injuries reported. A slow drive for oakland, marcus. The bay bridge toll plaza is clear. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Back to our breaking news for you this morning, those historic fires burning across the bay area. Some perspective for you in just this year so far more than 1. 4 million acres, double the combined size of los angeles, san diego, san jose and sacramento, they have burned over 7,000 separate fires. This time last year there were 56,000 acres burned and more than 4,000 fires. So we want to get right to our team covering the Northern California fires. Cierra johnson is up in wine country in sonoma county. Lets start out with kris sanchez. She has an update for us from Santa Cruz County this morning. Kris . Reporter good morning to you, laura. Were here at the Incident Command Center in Scotts Valley and expect our first update from cal fire coming up in about a half hour this morning. Well have to see if these weather conditions helped firefighter as they did last night. Its even cooler than yesterday and we saw some fog as we were coming up over the hill from san jose. I want to show you the aerial view of what firefighters are up against trying to make progress against that fire thats burning in very rugged terrain and trees that havent burned in 100 years, so thick that sometimes water drops cant penetrate to protect the homes, businesses and other structures below. At this point we know its 78,000 acres plus, 13 contained which does not mean its 13 out. A clarification there. 13 contained means its not growing in 13 of the perimeter. In this video you can hear the relief in the voice of one evacuee. Los angeles is here. Oh, my god, l. A. Is here. Thank god. Reporter her home is in the fire zone in boulder creek. Veronica foster told us she knew local crews were doing the very best they could to hold the line, but they needed reinforcement. That reinforcement, as you heard her say, came from l. A. Theres wildfires all over california right now, so my question, i kept asking my husband, why are they not fighting this fire . Theyre going to protect the town, right. Yeah, i completely get that. Where is the air where is the cal air. And i understood that they were fighting fires but there was just a part of me that felt really hopeless, like, its gone. Its absolutely gone. Reporter as far as she knows her home is still standing. Cal fire tells us theyre seeing fire damaged trees coming down, bringing down utility lines, even some wooden bridges are failing. It is rough in the evacation areas and a lot of heavy machinery arriving to help in the firefight. As we were leaving yesterday we saw a number of bulldozers being brought in on flatbed trucks and have seen the Incident Command Center grow. In fact, we have been pushed out just a little bit more. Were going to get an update at 6 00 this morning. Were hoping for some good news. It is a cooler, more damp morning here in Scotts Valley. Well bring that to you live and well give you a wrap at 6 45. Kris sanchez, today in the bay. More crews hopefully get a handle on this. Those workers in wine country are nervous because this is what some of them are seeing right now. They prepare for the most critical time of the year, harvest. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson is live for us in healdsburg sitting directly in fire zone, cierra. Reporter folks here do have mixed emotions. To start with that lightning and thunder we were talking about that extended that evacuation notice, it didnt exactly materialize like many folks thought it would. That warning has been going on since last wednesday. Combine that with additional aid thats coming in. It seems you would have a better footing on the fire. The owner, john hawley, says he can still see the smoke in the distance and was able to see the flames. He sent video of what he was seeing. At some point he was seeing the planes coming and dropping off water and was able to see some of the personnel going back and forth to help knock down that blaze. What he was reiterating this all comes at a difficult time. Not only is it harvest but is a global pandemic. Are the wineries getting as much business because of restaurants closed. He was talking off camera to us that this is a difficult time. He is in a safe area but could see what was going on. At some point he said it was terrifying. What he saw was terrifying. Well have more from his and his experience going through another fire, hes been here since the 70s but how the fires are impacting some local wineries. Cierra johnson for today in the bay. More details as bay area wildfires rage on. Evacuation arrangorders are in. Fema is sharing a Public Service announcement on how you should prepare in case you are forced to leave. Things like listen for local emergency alerts. Use n95 masks and leave if youre told to do so. One survivor from the campfire last year says it is krucrucial make a plan. Have a fiveminute plan, a twominute plan, have a drawer in the house where you keep the most critical things, one or two things you need to get out of your house other than your family and pets. What are two things you absolutely need. We posted the latest Evacuation Orders. You can find out what you can do to prepare right now. We have you covered at nbcbayarea. Com. And across the bay area another day of unhealthy air quality. Here is an updated view of the smoky skies from space. Look at that. Well, its so bad that from the air you can hardly see the Richmond San Rafael bridge. So far the spare the air alert is in effect until tomorrow. Kari, some of those areas seeing really bad air quality out there. Very unhealthy. Yeah, most likely theyll extend that because most likely we wont see any changes in our air quality over the nex days due to fires continuing to burn. Our air quality is better in San Francisco thanks to that fog rolling in, but outside of that area we are seeing unhealthy air quality, the numbers this morning a measure of how much of that particulate matter floating through the air and we can see it as we deal with the smoke even during the overnight hours under those street lights. You can see how smoky it is. So were dealing with that today. Not much of a change going into the next few days most likely but we will see a steady weather pattern. Well talk more about that coming up. Mike, any changes in the pattern of the commute . Most of the pattern is all right. I have an issue for oakland. A look at eastbound 580. An update via a traffic break is still in effect from about 98 down because of a crash. Guardrail damage. Eastbound 580 you can use bancroft as your alternate. In the city you take transit, a note from muni just as they were getting back on the rails they had to shut it down again and the buses are back in place for the next few weeks at the very least along with equipment issues. They also said there was a covid19 diagnosis so abiding by the protocols they will shut down those muni operations. Once again we have buses in place instead of the muni metro lines. Erring on the side of caution because of one positive diagnosis i think is worth it for everybodys safety. Back to you. Thank you, mike. 5 40, following breaking news in wisconsin. Then we look at the bay bridge toll plaza the middle lanes we have a backup. We may have metering lights on before 6 00. Well track both areas coming up. Breaking overnight in wisconsin, a night of fiery protests where people are outraged after police shot a black man. Demonstrations continued into the early Morning Hours. Officers shot jacob blake on sunday, and there is video which appears to show him being shot in the back seven times as he attempts to get in his car, the very car his children were sitting in. So far police are not saying much about what led up to the shooting or if he was armed. The president s children tiffany and eric trump and mike pompeo expected to address the nation. Lets bring in scott mcgrew. Very unusual for pompeo to speak. Its extremely unusual. Pompeo started his career obviously as a politician, but hes no longer a politician. He is the u. S. Secretary of state. Traditionally we think of that position as being above politics the same way we would not expect the secretary of defense to campaign for the president. Pompeo says hes participating as a private citizen and considering he sets the rules of the state department he can probably do as he wishes. Hell speak from jerusalem cementing the point about trumps actions in israel. Last nights kickoff had some very traditional moments. Nikki haley and tim scott had uplifting messages about their american stories, part of the republicans promise to have a positive and uplifting convention. And then kimberly guilfoyle. Dont let the democrats step on you, destroy your families, your lives and your future. Now the white house is not entirely happy with the coverage of the first night. President trump complaining fox would show speeches under the talking of their anchors and analysis by the Associated Press shows cnn and msnbc showed more of the convention than fox did. President trump was also unhappy with the networks not carrying the state by state roll call live. The gop ran the nomination in the morning instead of prime time and it was live, something the republicans wanted to do but lacked the production value. New mexico is proud to vote for that renewal, that revival by casting its 22 votes for donald j. Trump, the next president of the United States of america. The oregon delegation believes that the best is yet to come and is, therefore, proud to cast all 28 of our votes for president donald j. Trump. Today oregon casts 16 votes for Bernie Sanders. I want to update you we want to update you now on the largest wildfire, the complex fire, the scu complex fire scorching more than 360,000 acres across seven counties. Its 15 contained. Now the second largest fire in california history. And a look in kansas city, missouri, this morning. See that smoke . It is blowing to kansas city, missouri. Hazy skies. Isnt that amazing . It shows how much smoke weve had here. And how thick it is. Wow. Air quality not good. Exactly. No. And especially not for us here. The fires themselves causing major interruptions for not only people but for animals in the fire zone. This video of a pig. Take a look at it here. Were not sure if the owners home is evacuated but deputies realized it needed a big cooldown, of course. Keep your animals cool in the heat. Thats what theyre telling people. Yet another spot, one of my favorite therapy dogs here. Look at that. So beautiful there. Obviously she had to navigate and is helping things cool there in a different sense for firefighters working overtime providing comfort and relev. A lot of times dogs can do for people. I imagine working in those fires 72 hours plus sometimes is really stressful. That emotional support along with the food, the water. The emotions have to be draining on people. Certainly, kari, those temperatures in the bay area certainly not making that fight any easier because temperatures even though theyre cooling down still hot out there. Yes, it has been hot and this time of year weve seen hotter weather for august. And when we talk about the smoke making it all the way to kansas city, i remember last year when we had the fires that made it all the way to new york, so well see if it continues. It travels to the east. Were definitely feeling it and seeing it right now as we take a live look outside in dublin this morning. Weve seen the weather system that produced a fair amount over the sierra. Now its moving to the north and east but its also causing a shift in our winds and were seeing the return of the marine layer. Thats that coastal fog that we see each morning giving us our typical foggy weather. Temperatures today going into the afternoon around lunch time danville is at 84 degrees. Were seeing temperatures in oakland in the low 70s while San Francisco will be in the low 60s. And then as we go into the middle of the day mostly upper 80s in our warmer spots. Its not as hot as it has been. A change compared to last week. This is thanks to the marine layer coming back and giving us a breeze. Well see more of that fog creating some higher humidity as well and also slowing the spread of those fires especially some of those fires in the lower elevations. Looking at High Pressure that will not change, and this is actually a good thing because it will keep our weather pattern from changing from daytoday and it makes it more predictable for those crews out there battling those fires. Hopefully more containment over the next few days which, of course, would improve our air quality. Temperatures will be hot with our valleys reaching into the low to mid90s extending into the weekend. And for San Francisco much cooler temperatures here as the fog returns each and every morning.
