After four nights, a message finally popped up that said, your zoom session has expired. [ light laughter ] but everyone is still talking about president obamas big speech he did not hold back watch this donald trump hasnt grown into the job because he cant. I did hope for the sake of our country that donald trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously, that he might come to feel the weight of the office and discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care but he never did. He has shown no interest in putting in the work. No interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show that he can use to get the attention he craves jimmy ouch obama might have quit cigarettes but hes still smoking. [ laughter ] trumps phone heard that and was like, oh boy, its going to be a long night all right. Can someone throw him the something . Man, its like michelle hit trump with the it is what it is clothesline and then barack finished him off with an elbow from the top rope. [ light laughter ] thats right, obama broke an unwritten rule about former u. S. President s not attacking a current u. S. President obama was like, oh, come on, i didnt say anything about vladimir putin. [ laughter ] thats right, obama went all out and said, trump hasnt grown because he cant. Meanwhile, trump heard that and was like, wrong, i took a pill that makes me grow just fine. [ laughter ] obama also accused trump of not taking the job seriously at that point, trump was so mad, he could barely sink his putt into an empty pringles can. [ light laughter ] then obama accused trump of turning his presidency into a reality show trump was like, wrong again now send five people into my office so i can decide to who fire. Meanwhile, during obamas speech, trump started live tweeting in all caps by the end of the night, the imprint of trumps phone was burned into his hand like the bad guy from raiders of the lost ark. [ laughter ] its like but as i said, after four days, the Democratic Convention wrapped up tonight they knew it was time to end the convention when the calamari finally went bad. [ light laughter ] the theme of the night was americas promise, which im pretty sure was taken from the supermarket brand of butter and cheese [ light laughter ] do you want to get the should we get the kraft singles . You want to get americas promise . Also, somehow americas promise sounds like an adult diaper brand started by mike pence. [ laughter ] thats why i use americas promise. Make the promise to heres the big story today. Another one of president Donald Trumps Close Associates got indicted lets see who it is. [ laughter ] former Trump Campaign Senior Adviser steve bannon has been arrested and charged with fraud by federal prosecutors in new york he and three others are accused of orchestrating a scheme to defraud donors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars that the donors thought were all going to help fund the president s border wall. Jimmy yup. Steve bannon was arrested and placed in the trumps well wishes section of the prison [ light laughter ] thats right another trump associate is going to prison. At this point, the white house Softball Team and the prison Softball Team have the exact same lineup. [ laughter ] i dont know maybe these charges are nothing. I mean, does steve bannon look guilty to you . [ laughter ] oh, yeah oh, yeah he definitely does just so you know, by the way, thats how he looked before he got arrested looks like someone you find sleeping in the bathroom stall at margaritaville. [ laughter ] he looks likes an unemployed Martha Washington impersonator he looks like a guy who yells at little leaguers when he doesnt have a kid on the team he looks like every composite photo of what elvis would look like if he were alive today. And all this week shes been the one of the lead hosts of msnbcs decision 2020 Democratic National Convention Special coverage. Heres the one, the only, Rachel Maddow. Rachel, oh, im so hi, jimmy jimmy first of all, before we even get into this, i want to thank you for coming on but also, thank you for for just continuing to do your job, and showing up, and speaking to the public because, we need you. And its important and i know its how hard it is with everything, the pandemic, and you just showed up and it was awesome what you were doing. Well, you know what, the public needs you too i mean, we do different things, but this thing that we do where we communicate to lots of people through the magic television is a thing that people want and need, and were blessed to be able to do it through technology in a way a lot of people cant do their jobs safely and we can and i feel like more privileged than ever to have this kind of job. Jimmy youve been covering the dnc with joy reid and nicolle wallace. You guys are a great team. I think we have some highlight moments. I mean, the first night i think the first night Michelle Obamas speech was pretty flawless. Yeah. I mean, shes Michelle Obama and youre not like, theres nobody like her in the world shes got this sort of centered wisdom that i feel like she moves people in a way that other people dont and so, for her to say, listen, i hate politics but ive also seen the presidency up close and if you think it cant get worse, im here to tell you it can. That like, sent a chill through me jimmy yeah and her husband speaks two nights later and basically warns that the american democracy could end now. Jimmy yeah this could be the end for us and hear him say that, hes mr. Hope and change. Like, that was very unsettling to me. Jimmy yeah interesting, yeah. I got that, too. I was i think it was more emotional, i think, just hearing him talk and be like, i havent heard a speech like this in so long. Hes so good at this and you go like, oh, this is so i hope everyone out there sees this. I hope every young person sees this whos going to vote or anyone thinking about voting, or what it means or doesnt mean to them or im not going to vote this year. I dont know, i dont care if you watch this you go like, wait, what was i thinking . Yes jimmy this is important. This is our right. And hes because he is i mean, his brand, his whole political message is about optimism, right . It is about what america can be and the arc of the moral universe bending forwere reall risk, our country might not be a democracy anymore depending on what happens in the next election because the people in the power now are happy to do away with democracy as our form of government. I mean, hearing that from some jerk like me, fine [ laughter ] but hearing that from barack obama, who is not that guy, its just i just feel like separate and apart for how well theyre writing the convention those two speeches from michelle and barack obama are going to stick with me and i think stick with a lot of people for a long time jimmy yeah, i think he did a great job. I thought Kamala Harris equally, if not better at holding. I mean, that was a tough you got to follow Barack Obama Barack obama. [ laughter ] yeah, i know [ laughter ] never, ever, ever, ever, ever. Jimmy its the number one rule never let anybody make you follow barack obama. Jimmy thats the number one rule thats you go, yeah, im good. But, yeah essentially, he functioned as kind of the nominating speech for Kamala Harris. He referred to her, he didnt make his speech about her, but he referred to her in the speech as my friend and they are actually friends they have actually had a really long Political Alliance and know each other. And i think people who know that give it some some heft but, yeah. I mean, its also true that having a woman of color on the ticket for the First Time Ever give you chills. [ light clapping ] and, you know, for the Democratic Party who have had black women, women of color, in general, and black women in particular, saving their bacon for generations now. [ laughter ] like, no black women voters, no black women doing the work of the Democratic Party, no democratic politicians to finally have an africanamerican Woman Holding that position and poised to take that leadership role in the party, its so overdue and it just feels good i mean, seeing her Approval Ratings among democratic voters is up, you know, north of 90 . Likw, oh right you know, good choice, joe but then at the end when she said, you know, and in not too many years from now, people will look back on this and they will ask us about what it meant to be alive in this time and they will not ask us how we felt. They will ask us and we will tell them what we did. I was like [ gasp ] i felt like i was, like i feel like future me is judging current me right now and that i mean, thats what you want from a leader, right, is to call on your own moral conscience to call on you to look inside yourself and ask yourself, ask future self, ask future you who you want to have been in this moment jimmy i thought the whole night was like phew. Yeah. Jimmy i wanted to talk to you about also, you had the biggest interview, i think, in the history of msnbc if i may be wrong about it, let me know. But i mean, in interviewing Donald Trumps niece when she got that giant book, you got the interview and you crushed it when you knew you had the interview, did you go, like, okay, focus up, what are we going to talk about . Well, two things about that first of all, i had no idea that so many people were going to watch that interview. Even when i finished the interview, i was like, oh, i wonder if well get a little bump from this . Like [ laughter ] you know sometimes do you a show and youre like, that was an okay show and it like turns out to be a blockbuster. Jimmy yeah i had no idea jimmy yeah i had no idea at all. But, yeah. I mean, she had a story to tell and that interview didnt have anything to do with me it was just the people wanted to hear what she had to say. Shes got a really unique perspective on the president and what she thinks is wrong with him jimmy what was the one takeaway, you think you can go like, well, if anyone heard anything, you should hear what she said about this . I think the thing that sort of chilled me the most and that ive thought about the most since the interview is when she said something, that was very similar to what Michael Cohen said when she did his congressional testimony before he went to prison, which is she said she has absolutely no doubt that he will not peacefully agree he will not agree to the peaceful transfer of power at the end of his term if he loses. And i dont know if thats true hes certainly been stoking that fear among people, but for her to say, listen, ive known him since i was a kid. Ive known hem since i was a a toddler and i can tell you from a lifes worth of observation, and every other hard thing ive seen him go jimmy whoas no way. I feel like a lot of political observers say that and we game it out and think about what options will there be for the country if a president doesnt want to do this but to hear somebody who like, knows him just say that flat out without any equivocation was kind of rattled me a little bit. Jimmy well, you probably heard the rumor to that some people say, well, i think he might even just quit and say like, nope, im out i already got the win. I dont want to ever get a loss on my name yes jimmy this whole thing is rigged and thats it. Bye, guys. This countrys youre messed up and this whole thing is rigged. You must have talked about that i dont know. I mean i dont know jimmy yeah he seems like hes running. I dont think that if he quit right now he would be elevating mike pence to the office, which is something i cant really imagine him like it doesnt its not like it doesnt have consequences, you know what i mean jimmy yeah, yeah, yeah right. I didnt think about that. And then if pence won the election because trump quit and gave him, and that would be a mess for him, too. I dont know i dont know jimmy yeah all right, i have more to ask you before your big night. Im sorry. Can you stick around for two more seconds absolutely. Jimmy thank you. I have so many questions and thank you again for doin of course we never got to talk since the protests, black lives matter has been happening in our country, fighting for Racial Justice how do you think that will impact this president ial election thats a very good question im a real believer that direct action works, that when people protest and what people take to the streets and when people organize to express themselves, it has a political effect. I dont think its an impotent thing. And in this case, i think especially because the protests were so big, that was not that was not a sign that people believed the system doesnt work for them and theyre going to check out of it those protests being so widespread and so big and having so much support, i think was a vote of confidence in people wanting to make the country better and being willing to spend time and effort to do it. So i i, you know, i saw a a lot of Voter Registration and sort of voter organizing stuff happen around that and i think those demonstrations had a long tail in the country in terms of people still caring about it and talking about it and i do think thats going to dovetail with sort of get out the vote and Voter Registration efforts. At least thats what it seems like now but weve got 70 some odd days between now and the election and feels like anything can happen. Jimmy yeah, it really does feel like anything can happen. I mean, kanye west is running for president. [ laughter ] is that real i mean, to put a fine point, i think that donald trump is running kanye west for president. Like, its the Trump Campaign and the Republican Party that is and actually the trump family, thats kind of put kanye up to it, so thats real and sad jimmy it is real, though, right . I mean hes running for president. In some states he will be on the ballot as a president ial candidate. That said, hes not actually running to try to become president because even if he won all the votes in all of the states where he is on the ballot, hes not on the states hes not on the ballot in enough states that he could get enough Electoral College votes to win and so there is there is no circumstance in which a vote for kanye west is anything other than throwing away your vote you will never no matter what happens any conceivable circumstance, there will be no result in which kanye west becomes president. Its so bizarre this whol thats happening including the post office thing. I dont even understand. That was just another bizarre terrible. Its terrible. I mean, its the post office is literally in the constitution like, apple pie is not in the constitution the post office is in the constitution jimmy yeah messing with it means youre messing with everything we do by mail and everything we used to do by mail is enough but now in covid, we do everything through the mail, absolutely everything that we used to do through, you know, other means and getting my contact lenses. I dont do that anymore, they mail them to me. Everybodys getting their prescriptions mailed to them everybodys getting packages mailed to them everybodys doing everything through the shipping services in the postal service. And theyre messing with that to try to give trump an advantage in terms of slowing down or screwing mailin ballots. Its just theres its hard to imagine a more perfectly pointed intervention to anger most people in america. Jimmy yeah, i thought again Obama Barack Obama last night saying, like, hey, no, kamala wants you to vote, joe wants you to vote. He wants everyone to be we want you to have more options, and make it easier for you to vote not take away options and make it harder for you. I was like, yes, this is this is exactly a this is exactly correct. Were not making it harder we want to hear everyones so you all this is a democracy. Democracy good [ laughter ] thats basically saying. Yay, voting jimmy yes. Democracy good. Jimmy yes, exactly you talk. You speak. Yes, its very simple stuff and the argument against it is very disturbing, right, which is i mean, the president is saying he wants to deny the post Office Resources so they cant process millions of mailin ballots. Well, why do people want to vote by mail because of the freakin frakin pandemic, not because theyre trying to, like, get one over on you or theyre abusing the, you know abusing the stamp process. Jimmy yeah, we havent left our house. Yeah.
