This morning an exclusive look inside one of the busiest hospitals in one of the nations largest coronavirus hot spots, los angeles. Nbc National Correspondent Miguel Almaguer is in l. A. With an eyeopening look at what doctors are facing. Good morning, miguel. Reporter good morning. California has now surpassed a grim milestone with more than half a million cases, the most in the nation. And here in los angeles, one hospital has been hit especially hard. The l. A. County usc medical center. Was supposed to go inside their covid ward with their medical team, but with the virus still spiking it was deemed too much of a risk. So we have the hospitals own video crew shoot footage of what its like on the front lines. Their tireless staff never knowing what each new day will bring. This is one of the countrys busiest hospitals. L. A. County usc medical center. Were running at full speed here. Reporter now treating the poorest and sickest in all of los angeles. Where hospitalizations and deaths skyrocketed in july. That is a huge toll to take o them. Ay. Reporter and its a toll that pushed this hospital and its workers to the brink. We need to tell the human story, tell the story of our patients, tell the story of our exhausted staff who are running towards the danger. Reporter dr. Brad spellberg is the chief medical officer here. On the front lines every day with his army of dedicated physicians and nurses. Coming up from the e. D. , one open bed. Reporter trying to help the sickest patients survive and risking their own lives to do it. It is super stressful to have to put on the layers of protection and walk into the danger zone day after day after day. Its not a marathon. Its not a sprint. Its both. Reporter their emergency room reaching capacity a few weeks ago after california began to reopen. Their icu overwhelmed with critical patients. They cannot oxygenate. No matter what they do or what position they get in. How fast they breathe. So youre basically watching someone suffocate. Reporter now after nearly three months of surging cases, the numbers are stabilizing. But the emotional drain is still high. I have kids at home and i have an elderly mother who takes care of my kids. So taking care of these patients and then worrying about going to spread the virus home to my kids and my parents. Reporter and with this virus being unpredictable and flu season fast approaching, doctors fear another crisis is coming. How quickly can things go back to the worst Case Scenario . How quickly can that pendulum swing . Well, at peak we were getting 25 new positive patients per day. And if you give me 25 to 30 new positive patients per day and half of them end up in the icu, within a week were in serious trouble. Reporter still there are many people who doubt the severity of the pandemic. Something these doctors find hard to understand. We have seen some of the criticism about what some people call a plandemic or the virus doesnt kill people, its not real, its being blown out of proportion by the media, by even health officials. Whats your response to that . Come into my icu. Come watch. Patients and families are being crushed. What were seeing is the working poor getting wiped out. Were really asking for the publics help. Please help keep the situation under control so we dont run out of hospital beds, so our staff dont all get sick. Thank you, guys. Keep it up. Oh, my gosh. That doctor. That was an amazing look, miguel. You mentioned how their emergency room reached capacity or is close to it. So whats the plan if they do run out of space . How do they treat anybody new . Reporter well, hoda, doctors tell us they can always create new hospital beds if they need to, but what theyre really concerned about is the staff. Theyll be able to add those new facilities in different parts of the hospital but what they cant do is bring in more qualified doctors to handle that influx of patients. So thats their big concern. Theyre also monitoring other hospitals. But for now, theyre doing okay. Hoda, back to you. Miguel, thank you so much. Boy, when you see those doctors and nurses used to handling stress and watch what theyre going through, i was listening to one nurse saying that she was treating all these patients left and right and she was driving home and she saw a ton of people outside with no masks on at like an auto show. And she just looked outside and said i cant believe what im witnessing. You feel for those guys on the front lines. Yes, we do. Definitely. Coronavirus of course continues to be the big story. Another big story that were following this morning, that weather and that storm sigh yee yas moving up the east coast. Al, i know youre tracking that. Where are we looking right now . And it made landfall just days after hanna in texas. Thats the shortest time between landfalls since 2005. Now, were watching it push up the coast. As we predicted, we were going to see tornado watches extended to the north now. So 33 Million People under tornado watches. And were seeing numerous tornado warnings now starting to generate throughout just north of isaias. To the west, were looking at a risk of some Severe Weather from the plains, amarillo to north platte. Rest of the country today we are looking for a hot, hot, dry weather out west. Not as bad up to the pacific northwest. Cooler than average through the ohio river valley. That good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. Hey pal, did you know honey nut cheerios man yes, i have eyes. Now let me use my mouth. buzz i have an idea how about a brisk walk . man ill briskly walk you to the door. buzz gotta get those steps. Back now. Were back now it is 8 10 with your health. As television journalists, were used to delivering the news. Yes but recently a reporter at wfla, our affiliate in tampa, florida, became the news all because an eagle eyed viewer noticed a lump on her neck. Were going to talk to her in a moment, but first anne with her story reporter Investigative Reporter victoria price wants to get the story. Governor, there was a Senior Citizen who was reporter not be the story. Our Investigative Reporter victoria price knows this first hand she was just diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer this week reporter but this summer that changed when a tv viewer noticed the lump on prices neck i almost dismissed the email. I was like, maybe it was weird lighting in my live shot i very easily could have ignored this and i im glad i didnt reporter the viewer urged price to get her thyroid checked. Writing, reminds me of my neck mine turned out to be cancer just 28, all prices focus was on covid i would not have called my doctor and at the rate things have been going, i dont know how long it would have taken to catch this reporter but because of the email, catch it she did. Price joined inside editions Deborah Norville and hgtvs tarek who had their cancer spotted by viewers after telling the tampa audience she had Thyroid Cancer, the outpouring was so great price turned her diagnosis and surgery into a story we just got to the hospital about to go check in and i should be in surgery in a couple of hours now reporter sharing with her viewers what she was learning about Thyroid Cancer is her situation unique . Its not unique so Thyroid Cancer is very, very prevalent amongst women worldwide. But in the United States, its the fifth most common malignancy amongst women. Reporter this young woman, her surgeon says, is cured with a long life ahead of her. Victoria price is now a living reminder to Pay Attention to your health even during a pandemic for today, anne thompson, nbc news well, vic with us now from her home in tampa victoria, it is good to see you. You sure look good how do you feel . I know youve had your surgery good morning, savannah. Im feeling surprisingly well. I look like i lost a knife fight. All Things Considered id say im 90 back to normal, or at least my new normal. And you know, you got that email from a viewer. And all of us know who work in tv, sometimes you get email from viewers and sometimes they can be a little whacky and it might have been easy to disregard. Why did you Pay Attention to this one honestly, because i read it to my boyfriend. I think we were having dinner the night that i received that i go, read this weird email i got today. I was totally just going to dismiss it i was like, i dont see anything who knows. And hes like, you know, its not going to hurt just to call your doctor and check it out the worst that happens is that its nothing so im glad that i listened to him. No question and i know we all just want to go on with our lives you dont want to have a health problem, but thank goodness you did check it out when you think about it now and look back at the video that the viewer saw and you look at what the symptoms are, in retrospect, did you think that there was something going on once it was pointed out to me and i had my doctors explain the anatomy of what was wrong, it did make sense and i could see it to give you the short version, i had a nodule the middle of my throat about this big right here and that was actually forcing my thyroid gland out to the side of my neck, those glands that developed cancer that spread into my lymph nodes. Once it was pointed out to me, i could see it up until then, i really hadnt noticed. I think it was a gradual change over time and those are hard to notice on yourself i think we can all relate to that but now its funny now that this has been recently introduced to me, whenever i see somebody now my eyes immediately go to their neck does their neck look okay . Its kind of funny how your process changes after that well, yeah. You may save a life yourself with your eyes opened for it now too. Have you been surprised at how much attention its received and how much support youve gotten from viewers and people whove heard your story oh, my gosh the reaction and the response to this has by far been the most overwhelming aspects who would have thought the craziest part of having cancer wouldnt actually be the cancer part but thats the case here its been fantastic. The love and support has been probably the most phenomenal thing ive experienced in my entire life. And its really helped to power me through this, keep a really positive attitude. And its actually inspired me my mom and i are going to start a foundation to help promote Thyroid Cancer awareness, especially in young women. Its the most commonly diagnosed cancer in young women. I dont think we talk about it enough or how prolific it is its a really good issue to raise and a lot of people will be saved because of it victoria, what about you can you go back to work . What do they say your prognosis is so im really, really lucky i had my pathology report come back, the results of my biopsies from the morning of the surgery. Everything looks really, really good it had not spread any farther to what they initially detected my surgeon is very confident he got all that nasty stuff out of there. Right now its a matter of having a followup exam in about four weeks and just monitoring blood work and keeping an eye on things and being diligent about my health. But as of right now, i think im pretty much on the road to recovery and should be good from here on out. Well, im so glad i know you just got a big promotion at work. Youve got so much to cover and were glad to see you doing well thanks for sharing your story. I think it will help people. Appreciate it. No problem. I hope so too. And before we move on, we want to go to our medical correspondent dr. John torres. John, i mean, shes so young and thank goodness for that viewer who had an eagle eye and who obviously had experienced it herself. What should we look out for . If this is something you think, wow, i wonder if something is going on with me youre right. Its great having these astute viewers who can call and say hey, i think theres something there. Great for the fact that she actually paid attention and knew her own body thats the main point. To know your body, know if you have any changes, and if you do, seek attention so you find out what youre having those changes with the thyroid, it can be very subtle changes its toward the base of your neck itself. You can get these swollen glands you can get throat and neck pain on top of that, the symptoms can be subtle and it can be symptoms you dont really notice but other people might hoarseness that doesnt want to go away. You could have difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing or a persistent cough that just goes on for weeks and months and doesnt seem to be caused by a cold this might be Something Else that people bring up its again, know your body if you notice these changes, get it looked into to make sure its not Something Like this. Getting that checkup could be life saving. Real quickly, it sounds like its pretty treatable especially if you catch it early. Its one of the most treatable cancers out there. Like she said, three times more women than men usually women in their 40s and 50s, thats the age group they tend to get them anywhere 25 to 65 years old, some of the risk factors include a Family History of this as well someone in your family had thyroid lumps, thigh rod cancer, then youre more susceptible for it as well all right dr. Torres, thank you so much. You bet well take a turn now. A busy morning for al. Weve got Tropical Storm isaias marching up the east coast mr. His work on display in a new documentary the way i see it chronicling his time with both leaders. I was the official photographer for arguably the most iconic republican president of our generation. And the most iconic democratic president of our generation. Like, thats thats the thing that kind of floors me even to this day reporter he was there for the great events reagan at the berlin wall. What was so special about the relationship between ronald and nancy reagan it was very genuine there was a deep love and deep compassion between them that was the same behind the scenes as it was in public. They were each others best friend theres no question about it reporter his pictures also reveal character obamas competitiveness and pride over a blocked shot against his much younger and taller aide reggie love. And the enormous responsibility of being commander in chief. Souza was in the situation room capturing the tension during the bin laden operation that killed Osama Bin Laden youve got the most powerful people in the executive branch of our government all jammed into this tiny little room and yet they were powerless. Reporter souza left the white house with obama, but since then has stepped back into the political fray taking to instagram to draw contrast between president s obama and trump. What has inspired you to speak out politically . Well, i think the office of the presidency should be respected. I like to think that this film will show how a president should behave how a president should be a leader how a president should deal with other people reporter a photographers role, he says, requiring the kind of total access given to him by barack obama and Ronald Reagan the trust that these first families granted pete souza was so deep that when president reagan died years after he left office, nancy reagan asked him to photograph the funeral, the final journey home to california, and the burial one last chance for him to capture those poignant moments for history. Savannah hoda and al . Well, pete has certainly seen it all and just think about how much photography has changed since the 80s being a photographer for Ronald Reagan. Now digital photography for president obama. Hes crossed generations as well thank you, andrea. The documentary is called the way i see it and it will be released in september. Up next, a star who had some big plans for hoda kotb. Dont go there, please. Here is what happened can i take one second and tell you i think you should run for president. Hoda hoda hoda okay. Anyway, were going to talk to Jamie Lee Curtis about all the cool things she has cooking. We cant wait to catch up with her. Her. But first great day on the lake it is. Lunch is cookin and i saved a bunch of money on my boat insurance with geico. Fellas, can it get any better than this . Whoa my old hairstyle grew back. So did mine. [80s music] what . I was an 80s kid. It only gets better when you switch and save with geico. Welcome back a hollywood legend, Jamie Lee Curtis has done it all shes done tv dramas, four movies shes got her childrens books now shes tackling a whole new genre. Shes producing and starring in a scripted mystery podcast for families its called letters from camp. Its on audible. Jamie lee curtis, good morning good morning to you, my hero. Its so good to see you look i was curious about you in quarantine i was wondering when i woke up, i wonder what a typical day in the life is like for Jamie Lee Curtis at home so what are you doing there . First of all, its pitch black here as you can tell you know, im an active person i have taken advantage of this quarantine and turned it into something very creative. So as you mentioned, i have a podcast thats starting today on audible for young families who didnt get to go to camp this year you know, camp was horribly canceled because of the pandemic and heres an opportunity for families to go back to camp in an audible sort of tv for your ears way and its super funny and so ive been doing that. I started a website. So ive been busy. When you were a little kid, was camp one of your jams . Did you love going to camp i loved camp. I loved camp so deeply im a slight bit of a control freak and i like things fairly neat, and so to me camp was great because you got to put everything in a trunk and roll up your tshirts and have your soap in a little soap box. So i loved the compartmentalization of camp i loved the fact that you could invent yourself at camp and be kind of a new version of you, which i think what camp offers children im so excited to listen to this podcast i think its going to be awesome. Its so, so funny i think families are just going to love it its called letters from camp. Okay. We got it. Its on our list right now so jamie lee, the last time you were here, one thing i love about you is youre always so open about your life im always so touched by how you have this feeling right now which is like everythings free, everythings out you were talking about your sobriety 21 years of sobriety and again, ive got to thinking about people who in this moment are sitting at home and theyre struggling and theyre wondering how do i get through the days youve gotten through some hard days how did you get through those days and how might you help some people at home right now well, obviously the thing thats amazing about everyone during this pandemic is how they shape shifted. Obviously youre in the studio now, but there was a period when you were at home i think the same has happened in all areas. Food delivery, food access, but also sobriety. There are now sober meetings online everywhere available to people you can find them through the various Recovery Centers that are in your local community. And weirdly enough, theyve been very, very satisfying and helpful. And i think the way we as americans, people all over the world have learned how to adapt and change, thats what makes human beings so exciting the ability to shift and change and take advantage of something very frustrating and difficult for many people. Well, youve done your share of shifting and changing over the years, too, jamie lee. I follow you on instagram and you posted a throwback picture it was you like 40 years ago i dont know it was a beautiful shot. And i was looking at that picture and i thought to myself, i wonder what Jamie Lee Curtis would say to her younger self. What would you have said to this young girl you see in the picture right now . I think what all of us would say to our young selves is relax, you are enough, you are physically enough, mentally enough at that moment. Like, we constantly beat ourselves up i think people by nature do that and i would say that and one of this is going to just sound weird. The segue. But the truth of the matter is, im in these times of pandemic and difficulty, i also want to be able to reach out to people and let them know that theyre not alone. And so the other thing that was exciting for me this week is yesterday i started a website that i founded called my hand in yours which offers comfort items for people in times of crisis. And 100 of the profits go to Childrens Hospital los angeles and the first thing im offering is that beautiful little hand sculpture that you can buy and send also a necklace you can buy. Im wearing it right here. See . Its a hand that you can hold during these hard times. And so part of it for me is this ability to connect the dot that we are all struggling and we are also all surviving and that the way to do it is together that we are not alone. And when were separated from our loved ones like so many people or particularly the elderly, this is a way to be able to send something its kind of a gift that keeps on giving. So right now im sort of focused in that world of comfort, connection you working mommy of two i mean, come on. Look at you. I want to know about the babies. Theyre so cute im going to send you some pictures theyre so cute. Jamie lee, youre always paying it forward no matter what you do, everything you do is about paying it forward. Thank you for waking up and coming on. Thank you for showing our necklace to our crew it woke them up. They were asleep any way, we appreciate that, too. Well, god bless you all and we will get through this together one day at a time we sure will. Thank you so much. And by the way, youre going to come back and visit us on the fourth hour. So were going to hear more about that also hear letters from camp on audible. Download that now. Coming up next, someone else we love. The principal turned star of yesterdays boost. I dont know if that was a coffee grinder there but i was curious when the kids saw the final product. What was their reaction . Its been totally crazy just so exciting to see and to watch. Just to see the shares continue to go up on social media outlets. And the message is clear we want people to be safe. Were coming back to school. But this is just a fun way to kind of reinforce the rules and make sure were getting buyin from our students and community. What would you say to other administrators watching or teachers, you know, who are and parents as well who are trying to navigate through these unprecedented times as folks get ready to go back to school it holds true that educators are the backbone of this entire nation right now were dealing with a situation of students coming back to school and educators are going to be the bonding glue there Holding Everyone together.
