As the San Francisco chronicle first reported, after years ofp family left wartorn yemen to join the childrens father in San Francisco earlier this year. Their immigration visas were approved, but when they arrived, rahads was missing. Their Attorney Says the u. S. Embassy assured them it would be issued. They said the visa should be issued shortly. Unfortunately in the meantime, President Trump issued a ban on immigrant visas, a ban on the issuance of new immigrant visas. Reporter amir says the family had to be in the United States by july 1st or their visas would expire. So they made the difficult choice to leave the girl in egypt with a neighbor. No word on any injuries or a cause. The covid death toll is rising to its fastest rate in months. Roughly one american died every minute from the virus yesterday. In california, 194 deaths were reported and more than 10,000 new cases. Governor newsom once again making the plea to californians to wear a mask. Across the bay area, we added more than 1,000 cases today. Alameda county had the highest number of new cases today at 358. Contra costa county added 86 new cases. Yesterday the county reported 400 new cases but now says that was a glitch in the system, and county wide there were just cas. A live look now at San Francisco, where Health Leaders say the city is experiencing a major surge in cases. This graph shows the number of hospitalizations within the city over the last four months. You can see there was a rise in hospitalizations in april and may. Then it dropped off. And at the beginning of this mor month, hospitalizations soared once again. Grant colfax says if cases continue, the city could have more than 750 people in the hospital with covid by midoctober. The virus is moving fast, and more people are getting seriously ill. As the city sees cases going up, it announced two inpatient facilities in the presidio. Patients who dont need a high level of care and are recovering from noncovidrelated illnesses could be sent to these facilities. That will free up more hospital beds for covid19 patients. To the south bay now and the covid outbreak at a sunnyvale costco we told you about last night. Well, its not the only one. Santa clara county Health Officials say three other Costco Stores have seen outbreaks among employees. But as nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana tells us, the county says customers are not at any risk. Reporter over the span of four days, this site has seen 13 employees test positive for covid19. County Health Officials say the company has been very cooperative, and theyve taken numerous measures to try to prevent any further infections, and thats one of the main reasons why the store has managed to remain open. The other main reason, so far county Health Officials do not believe the infections happened while at work. The initial investigation appears to tell us that the cases have really been infected most likely in the community and outside the workplace although were not done with those investigations. Theyre ongoing. Reporter county Health Investigations say it includes four sites. Its going to happen. Reporter customers we talked with say it was business as usual inside the sunnyvale site. The historic cliff house tried to make a go of it with just takeout but recently decided to shut down until county Health Regulations relax. Because theyve lost so much money, the owners filed a claim with their Insurance Company and were denied. So now theyre suing. The owners say they paid large premiums for decades to protect a controversy like this but the company didnt pay out when they needed it. An investigation is under way in the east bay after a fire started outside a predominantly black church in berkeley that recently hung a large black lives matter sign. An alert neighbor spotted a man setting the churchs trash bins on fire and quickly knocked it down. Eugene gonzalez lives behind the Way Christian Center in berkeley. He and his roommate were able to keep the fire from doing too much damage. The Police Department says theres not enough evidence yet to call it a hate crime. The churchs pastor believes it was. Im angry, and i think all of us are angry. Were tired, but were not deterred. The Police Department said it doesnt want to discount it. A study showing children under the age of 5 can carry as much of the coronavirus in their noses as older children and adults. The study was done by lurie Childrens Hospital of chicago. This means that young kids may be able to spread covid19 as easily as adults and its another factor to consider when it comes to opening schools. I think the study should have people think for a second about what we need to do to make sure that when we reopen schools, were doing it in a safe manner. We cant assume children dont get coronavirus or spread coronavirus. 145 patients were involved in the study. It was published in the journal of the american medical association. Speaking of opening schools, while a vast majority of bay area schools will begin the school year with remote learning, dozens of south bay schools are hoping to reopen for inclassroom learning. They would need to get the okay from Health Officials first. Under governor newsoms pandemic plan, Elementary Schools have the option to apply for a waiver with their local health officer. If they qualify and are approved for this exception, students can return to class even if the county remains on the state monitoring list. Private schools like gidian housener Jewish Day School are among those applying for a waiver. It starts with Health Checks and temperature checks at the front door for all staff and children.
