The two speaking about Racial Injustice in america and the wave of protests in the face of George Floyds death. We are remembering congressman lewis this morning, after he died on friday at the age of 80, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. In 1965, lewis was brutally beaten by Alabama State trooper, horrifying the nation, and focusing attention on the Civil Rights Movement. He later went on to become an influential member of congress. He dedicated his entire life to bringing justice and equality to the United States even in his final days. Tributes are pouring in for lewis, often known as the conscience of congress, a moral leader, respected by democrats and republicans alike. Today, president obama and members of congress, past and present, are remembering liewis as an American Hero. You see those images there with former president barack obama. He talked about what that meant for him, to see barack obama elected, and the two of them continuing, he would say, to talk to young people about this moment. And so few leaders who get to witness their legacy in real time as weve seen with these nonviolent protests in recent months. Andrea mitchell has covered congressman lewis for decades, since he joined congress in 1986. Andrea, you knew him for years. Can you give us a sense about his impact on that institution . He has been described, of course, as the conscience of congress, as youve been reporting today, but that is such a deeply, deeply felt role that he played, because he was the moral leader. He was the core of what we used to know and respect and admire about congress. And he was always calling us to a higher level, and calling his colleagues to be in the moment. And when you think about the black lives matter protests and how he marched and walked with mayor bowser there in that signature moment just last month, as ill as he was, as well as the sitin, the sitin for gun rights just struck me as such a moment. I saw last night one of the congresswomen talking about how they were trying to figure out how to get a vote. Just to get a vote after the pulse shooting, the nightclub shooting, and he said we have to do the good fight. We have to do something dramatic, and that was to sit in, in the halls of congress. Its never been done before. For 25 hours, they sat on the house floor and still could not get the vote, but they made the point. Of course, they didnt achieve the gun reform, the gun control measures that they wanted, but that also goes back to when i was interviewing him back in 2015 and asked him about dr. King and the march, and how they got the Voting Rights act. He said they went to johnson and Lyndon Johnson said you have to make it possible for me to do this. We just did the 1964 civil rights bill. I cant do that again. You have to make it possible. By that he meant make the conditions possible, aarouse the nation. Thats what led to selma and the other marches that led to the Voting Rights act. When we see the arc of history, his role was so central as a student. Thats the message that strikes me. As a student he became one of the first freedom riders. How dangerous that was. I was in high school in those days, and i remember and, in fact, lost someone from our community where i lived up north, who went down there, michael shwerner, as one of those original freedom riders, who was killed in mississippi. They were putting their lives on the line. And when john meacham describes him as a saint willing to spill blood, he did it repeatedly, in the carolinas and again in alabama, in mississippi. What john lewis did was always put himself in the line ofan wh than that . Well, calling all of us to be better angels to our better selves. He was released from parchmont farm penitentiary for using a socalled white restroom during the freedom rides of 1961. He caught, be constructive, not destructive. In a lot of ways, i think, he was actually the conscience of this country. Someone who, to this day, urged americans to sit in, to stand up, to vote and also, in his words, to cause good trouble. Great quote there by john lewis. I had the great honor of being in selma, actually, with congressman john lewis as a reporter as he marched across the Edmund Pettus bridge for the 50th anniversary. For that historic day, with president barack obama, he fought for equality and justice even in his final days. That, of course, is where we begin this saturday. Congressman john lewis passing away overnight at the age of 80. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling him a titan of the Civil Rights Movement. This morning, well take a look back at how he shaped the countrys history. lalso speak to Martin Luther king iii. We begin right now with nbcs geoff bennett. Geoff, good morning. Reporter peter, good morning. John lewis was an American Hero, towering figure of the Civil Rights Movement and longtime u. S. Congressman. He was revered by so many for his decadeslong embodiment for the fight for civil rights. Congressman john lewis was often called the conscience of congress, known as the moral leader who commanded respect from democrats and republicans. Seen as one of the last unifying forces in national politics. Lewis was one of ten children born to share croppers in rural alabama in 1940. He grew up on his familys farm and attended segregated public schools. Lewis said he was inspired as a young boy by the activism surrounding the montgomery busboy cot and sermons by the Martin Luther king jr. That he heard on the radio. As the spirit moves us to, we have the right to march at night, any time we want to march. Reporter all of it, spurring him to become part of the Civil Rights Movement. Organizing sitin demonstrations at segregated lunch counters in nashville, tennessee in 1961, joining in the freedom rides, which challenged segregation at terminal bus stops across the south. He was an architect of and keynote speaker at the historic march on washington. I have a dream today. But it was in 1965 when he helped spearhead one of the seminal moments, leading protesters against the Edmund Pettus bridge in selma, alabama, marching for Voting Rights. The group was beaten by Alabama State troopers in what became known as bloody sunday. That helped to pass the Voting Rights of 1965. We were taught never to become bitter, never to hate. Reporter his activism continued in congress. We have lost hundreds of thousands of innocent people to gun violence. Reporter in 2016 after a mass shooting at an orlando nightclub killed 49 people, lewis led a house sitin, trying to force a vote on gun legislation. John lewis often spoke of the good trouble he caused in the 1960s and in the political fight since, invoking the moral courage that fuels his lifelong fight for civil rights. When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something, to do something. Congressman lewis died on the same day as civil rights pioneer, c. T. Vivian, who was 95. Vivian was one of dr. Kings closest advisers. Among the tributes pouring in for congressman lewis is one from former president barack obama, who says this about congressman lewis. He says, he loved this country so much that he risked his life and his blood so that it might live up to its promise. So many grateful for ctn pourinh sides of the aisle and all over the country. We want to bring in his son, Martin Luther king iii, joining us from atlanta this morning. We are so grateful for you joining us on this morning to remember the late congressman. He knew your father well, he was one of the organizers of that march on washington. Talk about that relationship between your father and john lewis. It was part of that relationship was a mentoring relationship. Dad certainly admired his energy, his tenacity and he admired dads leadership. And so that is the real relationship. Dad was inspired by john lewis, just as i have been excuse me, john lewis was inspired by dad, but i have been inspired, as many millions of us across the nation and the world have been inspired by john lewis and his examples that he set for us every day. And you say that, and it makes me think about the fact that congressman lewis was 23 years old when he marched across the Edmund Pettus bridge, that brave march. Its a fight, though, that he has continued to this day. He continues to speak out to young people. He saw this wave of protests all across the country as a continuation of his body of work whachlt do you think his impact will be on this next generation . Well, clearly, we are seeing more young people engage in voting. He is the one one individual th personifies, more than anyone, the importance of voting. This is the 150th anniversary of the 15th amendment, which gave black men the right to vote. The Voting Rights act later. This is the 100th anniversary of womens voting and 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights act. I hope people inspire to reenact the Voting Rights act. That would be a true tribute to john lewis instead of people from all across the aisle just praising him, we need to act. John lewis would want us to act and act now, to make sure that everyone can vote, no encumbrances. Youre struck, im struck by some of the words he said in the last several months. He would repeat the phrase be constructive, not destructive. What lasting message do you think john lewis would want to leave for us . When you say be constructive, that is what he always, again, personified. And i think that there are young people out here today that are working in a constructive way. Its my hope that congress does that, not just talk. And when i say congress, i mean both sides. Again, a tribute to john lewis would be for us to create no encumbrances, maybe to reenact the Voting Rights act. Thats what he would want us to do. Thats what weve got to do. Weve got to vote every election, not just this election. This is probably one of the most critical but we have to vote every election. That is what he would want us to do. That is what begins the process of change in this nation. Martin luther king iii, we very much appreciate you joinike needles.
