Musical guest, Avril Lavigne and the legendary roots crew its the tonight show at home edition. And now, heres jimmy. Jimmy welcome to the tonight show, everybody im jimmy fallon thank you so much for tuning in what a show we have for you tonight. Anthony mackie is here, captain america himself. We also have david dobrik and music from Avril Lavigne so, thank you so much for watching theres a lot going on in the country right now. Lets get to some news the stock market took a huge dive today things are pretty rough. Seems like right now the only Good Business to be in is statue removal around the country, protesters arent waiting for cities and counties, and are pulling down monuments to confederate history. Last night in richmond, protesters tore down the statue of former confederate president , Jefferson Davis this is the third statue toppled by protesters, including a statue of confederate leader Williams Carter wickham. In eastern virginia, a confederate memorial was destroyed. Jimmy yeah, if people are upset about confederate statues coming down, theyre going to be really mad when they hear what happened to the confederacy. By the way, you know President Trumps ordering all of his statues to weigh 50 thousand pounds and be surrounded by chain link fences. Maybe make sure theyre already lying on the ground. Like theyve pulled down from the start. Thatll be our thing one argument is that the statues are a symbol of racism, while the other argument is stupid yesterday in richmond, a statue of Jefferson Davis was knocked over Jefferson Davis decedents havent been this disappointed since they read the wikipedia for Jefferson Davis. Well at least the statue is being put to good use. Today, a protester used it to ride in the car pool lane. Now, nancy pelosi is calling for the removal of 11 confederate statues at the u. S. Capitol i would do a joke, but im still trying to figure out how there are still 11 confederate statues at the u. S. Capitol. Pelosi called the statues, quote, an homage to hate. Then the president said, wow, thats beautiful lets get that engraved on the statue. There are over 700 confederate statues and monuments across the u. S. Half of them are in texas, georgia, virginia and North Carolina the other half are surrounding Mitch Mcconnells pool yeah, the good news is some statues are coming down. The bad news is trumps replacing them with the my pillow guy well, with all this news about confederate statues, i want to take a mthe amazing statues that dont celebrate the confederacy. So, for all the good statues, this ones for you youre simply the bes better than all the res better than anyon oh youre the best jimmy meanwhile, its not just confederate statues that are being taken down on wednesday, nascar officially banned the Confederate Flag from all events after a request from bubba wallace, the sports lone black driver and just hours later, he took to the track in a black lives matter car jimmy hopefully the gesture will make nascar more inclusive. Right now nascar is so white, the only merch they sell are new balance sneakers and spf 100. In response to the removal of Confederate Flags and statues this morning, President Trump tweeted, those that deny their history are doomed to repeat it. Trump was like, trust me, thats how we got eric. I wasnt sure where trump got that quote from until i saw his next tweet your lucky numbers are 4, 7, 21, 33, 52 trump was like, first the confederate statues, then what the robot band at chuck e. Cheese . When will this end . Yup, trump said those that deny history are doomed to repeat it, then he went back to not preparing for the second wave of coronavirus i saw trump will be holding his first rally since coronavirus in tulsa next friday, which brings us to a new segment called, couldnt you just . And now, couldnt you just. Jimmy hey, President Trump, i hear youre holding a rally next week on juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery. And i hear youre holding it in tulsa, home to possibly the worst incident of racial violence in American History heres a question for you. Couldnt you just not do that . Of all the cities on all the days, couldnt you just hold it in houston on arbor day or in boise on flag day . Also, timing, donald, were in the middle of a pandemic couldnt you just wait before you say it and spray it all over oklahoma . And i know you refuse to issue social distancing guidelines for your rally, but hey, if its like some of your past gatherings, couldnt you just admit crowding might not be a problem . So look donald, before you pop out of your bunker for coughapalooza, couldnt you just rethink the plan . I mean, couldnt you just let the protests have their moment and make room for people who can help us through the pandemic couldnt you just . Couldnt you just . Couldnt you just . This has been, couldnt you just . Jimmy and with all the protests happening, a lot of people have stopped following social distancing guidelines even mike pence seems to have forgotten about the pandemic watch this Vice President mike pence tweeted and then deleted a a photo, showing a large group of President Trumps Reelection Team not wearing face masks or social distancing those are two recommendations given by the Coronavirus Task force, which pence leads jimmy you think pence would know better, social distancing was the theme of his wedding you may now elbow bump the bride. Can we see that photo again . Even nascar thinks pence has a a diversity problem. Well listen to this. I saw that twitter is rolling out a new feature that asks users if theyd like to actually read news articles before they retweet them yeah, i think thats a good idea in fact, twitters been testing out a whole bunch of different questions before you tweet check it out this one asks, do you really want to be that person who quote tweets stuff and just adds, this . this one asks, are you sure you want to compare centuries of Racial Injustice to that time your parents grounded you for getting a tongue stud . This one asks, is it really a a good use of your time to get in an argument with someone named vapepatriot55416 . And lastly, this one asks, dont you have something more important to be doing, mr. President . And finally, a lot of mayors across the country have been talking about how theyre going to change their cities in response to the black lives matter protests. But their speeches are sometimes a little confusing check out this one mayor i just saw. Jimmy hello. I wanted to address the people of this city that i am the mayor of the protests have forced my staff and i to begin having a conversation the conversation is important. The conversation is necessary. And while i cant tell you at this time what that conversation is, i can tell you that it is a conversation. And we are having it our mouths will move up and down words will come out of the middle parts of our mouth, and that will form a conversation. Another thing were working on, and this cant happen overnight, is were opening up a dialogue it will be a dialogue between myself and those listening to the dialogue it will be like your words are food for our ears, which are mouths, except our mouths wont be eating food words theyll be participating in the dialogue were also going to move funds around to have the resources necessary to open up an exchange of ideas. Were going to spend some time thinking about the ideas then were going to start bouncing those ideas back and forth until we settle on one single idea. Then im going to let that idea enter my mind, which will cause my fingers to write policy changes and my fingers just want to say thank you, and that they are listening so to summarize, we will be having a conversation, a a dialogue, and the exchange of ideas. And then were going to look towards having a conversation about what ideas were bouncing back and forth in the dialogue but until th to continue the communication is what this is. Commicuni jimmy wow. He got out just in the nick of time, before that rain came. That is my monologue, everybody. We have a great show, again, Anthony Mackie, david dobrik, Avril Lavigne. More tonight show when we come back. Come on back, everybody. This is definitely a sea change. We have rolled out teams across our network, and we went from essentially no televisits to approaching 5,000 visits a day. These visits are surprisingly intimate. I can actually share my screen and show the xrays. We really moved some mountains in our network, and teams has been a huge part of that. This is going to be a game changer for medicine. [ cheers and applause jimmy earlier today, i got to sit down with captain america himself, Anthony Mackie, who is in new orleans right now. Anthony. Jimmy Anthony Mackie, thank you so much for doing the show, its always good to see you, buddy. Is the family safe, everyone okay everybodys great new orleans, you know, i have to say is rambunctious of a city everybody kind of stepped up and did their part and quarantined, and, you know, we took care of each other. So im very proud of everybody and myself jimmy and on top of that, we obviously are the country is dealing with the murder of george floyd and racism and Police Brutality how are you dealing with all of that you know, its interesting. Just, you know, being a father of sons, you know, you have to open your kids eyes to the world and live it. And, you know, when i was growing up, like most boys, you want to be a fireman or a Police Officer you want to be a First Responder in some way, and then, it comes the harsh reality of the day that you have to tell your kids that, you know you have to open their eyes to what the world is around them, to how police view them as young black men. So you know, it was just its a tricky slope. You know, because i want my boys to have those dreams. I want my boys to look at police, and, you know, officials in the military and police in a higher esteem, but at the same time, you have to be honest with them about what happened, you know, my ten, my 11 and my 7yearold, i sat them down and, you know, we had a long conversation about it and, you know, they get it, but they just they just they dont understand the lack of humanity in a person to do that to another person. And theyre 11 and 7 years old you know, and they just they cant they cant understand someones ability to do that, when theyre literally, their code of armor is to protect and serve, not to enslave and destroy. So, you know, i just try to be open and just thats my biggest thing. Its my boys, its for them to know the world around them. Because, you know, i truly believe i look at my kids, i look at my kids sons, this is generational, you know, everybody 40 and over, were done like just send us out to pasture. But our kids are the ones, your kids, my kids, our kids look at each other as a human being. They dont have the stigma and the weight of bigotry and racism on their shoulders. They can just be human beings. And in three generations, everybody will look like steph curry anyway [ laughter ] jimmy you know, weve been having these conversations and a lot of intelligent people have been saying, you know, this is a movement thats unprecedented. They havent seen anything like this, not only because of the length, i mean, its been going on for two weeks now, but also, all the ages and races of people protesting. Theyve never seen it so hopefully, i think theres going to be there has to be change we cant and thats my friends and i got together four of my friends and i were sitting down in atlanta before the whole pandemic came about, and we came up with the idea of whats the most important thing we can do. When i i had a movie called the banker that came out this year, and i was able to do the premiere at the Lorraine Hotel in memphis, tennessee. And it really it changed my life i mean wow it was crazy. Because i had never experienced anything of that magnitude my grandparents, my parents, my aunts and uncles went through, coming back from war, and being black in america in the 50s and 60s. And i was able to stand out on the balcony, where Martin Luther king was assassinated and it blew my mind to think that this man worked so hard and gave his life and here we are 50 years later, 55 years later, dealing with the exact same thing and thats what hurts. Because i know my grandfather was a sharecropper my dad was a contractor. And he had to drop out of school in eighth grade to work with his grandfather so that he could give me the opportunity to go to juilliard and be a stupid actor you know jimmy yeah so we cant when i saw that, my friends and i got together and we said, we have to do something. And we realized theres power in numbers we have a great opportunity right now to change the scope of the world and i realize all the time and i say to these people, a a sheriff is an elected position, a mayor is an elected position, our president is an elected position, your d. A. Is an elected position, so we started a website called iamaman. Vote and our goal is to register one million men to vote. And were going to do everything we can so that these people that are jeopardizing the future for our kids. You want to hurt somebody, you get rid of their job and you put somebody in that position who could actually help because theres so many people out here. Its just not right. Jimmy thats right i ask everyone, iamaman. Vote were on instagram, were on facebook, were on twitter, go to our website, if you have a nephew, if you have a cousin, if you have a friend, if you have a young man who needs information, send him to this website, send him to our page, we will register him we will educate him and we will help him vote. Because thats our power thats where the strength comes in jimmy yeah the power of what your vote means. In atlanta, last week, they had Voter Suppression rallies because theyre delivering the polls the morning that these people are supposed to vote. So how are they supposed to vote only in black neighborhoods. So now, what you do is i want people to vote early, you vote a month early, you vote two weeks early, so we dont have 10,000 people at the polls if we have 10,000 a day when it comes the day to vote, we could do all elderly people. If you know who youre voting for now, do it. Do it go vote right now, and you could do that. You can vote a month before. If you know who youre voting for, go vote now and we owe it to ourselves to show how powerful we are as a community and as a group, because everybody out there marching and protesting, if youre marching and protesting, if you really want to be heard, register to vote jimmy more with Anthony Mackie when we come back, everybody. This moment. This moment right now. This is our commencement. No, well not get a diploma or a degree of any kind. But we are entering a new chapter in our lives. Our confidence is shaken; our hearts cracked. The kind of a crack that comes from the loss of a job; from life plans falling apart. We didnt ask for it. But we are rising to meet it. And how far weve come isnt even close to how far we can go. We just have to remember how patient we were. How strong we can be. how strong you can be. and remember this; theres a crack in everything for a reason. How else can the light get in . Tomorrow starts today. Could be all your softf odor surfaces . Ome. Odors get trapped in your homes fabrics and resurface over time. Febreze fabric refresher eliminates odors. [ cheers and applause jimmy heres part two of my conversation with Anthony Mackie were back with Anthony Mackie, everybody. Anthony, we have something in common, we were both we both worked at Grocery Stores, i was a bag boy, that was my first job. Yeah, i jimmy what did you do . I did overnight stock but i got fired because i kept i specifically asked for the baby food aisle every night. So i kept eating all the baby food, so i would have whole meals, i would have peas with the potatoes, and beef and carrots, and i would just kill it i would come back and id be like jimmy baby food thanksgiving right, and i would take all the empty containers and put them behind the stuff that i was stocking thats when they caught on to fat mackey, i go through and eat it all jimmy i was a bag boy forever, and i was great that guy knows whats up, eggs on top, eggs on top. Right. Jimmy but you started this fund, working with people to start this fund. Talk about the grocery workers relief fund. Well, you know, it was important to me. I realized during the whole pandemic, ive been in the Grocery Store three or four times a week, and youre talking about people who are working hourly wages people who mostly live check to check. A lot of kids who are working to put more money into their parents household just trying to help, you know. And theyre risking their lives for basically minimum wage so we put this fund together with the united way, the new Orleans Council for aging, entergy of new orleans, and you go to the united way of Southeastern Louisiana website and you donate to the Grocery Store, were asking everybody every time during the pandemic, you go to the Grocery Store, give one dollar. Right, if youve been to the Grocery Store three times, give three dollars. If you havent been, give one dollar but were asking people, so what were going to do is were going to give all the Grocery Store workers 150 money towards their energy because when all this is over, youre going to have two to three months of energy bills piled up and were talking about people who live check to check. So they cant afford that amount. So i started it all, i donated 50,000 toward the fund, entergy match about 50,000, so we have 100,000 that were donating 100 toward Grocery Store Workers Electric bills and were asking everyone to help out as much as you can like i said, a dollar for every time youve been to the store would be a massive help. Jimmy thank you for doing this i do want to talk about a film that you its a documentary that you executive produced. Yeah. And you appear in, its from one of your teachers yeah. Moni yakim it was a duo actually. It was moni and his wife mina yakim and moni was a mystical man, he would always come in class with this black shirt, black tshirt, black pants, black shoes, and he would just like float around the room, because he was our Movement Teacher at juilliard, but the way he puts his body, his movement, his nature i mean, he was just like a a ninja. Jimmy sorry to be ignorant, what is a Movement Teacher [ laughter ] see jimmy i the things you laugh about, the weird actor stuff. Thats basically the movement. Hes the one who puts us in a circle, and we have to float, we have to act like we can touch the air and all this stuff. Jimmy oh,yeah. Be a tree. Yeah. Jimmy the Ice Cream Cone but him, because he started off as a mime in france before he came to america, he taught us all this amazing mime work and all this physical work so that we can control our bodies and bring emotion through our bodies and focus almost like dance in a way, but more mime and physical life as opposed to dance. Jimmy i think its such a great story going from the first part of our interview, talking about who sacrificed and worked to get you to where you are. To how proud they must be of you because not only have you crushed it, and i mean really crushed it, you are the first black captain america. Yeah. Jimmy what dude, thats the best sentence i could ever say [ laughter ] i mean, its got to feel amazing. Yeah, its funny, every day, i love my sisters. And every day, my sisters remind me that theres nothing but god got me from where i was to where i am. Theyre like, yo, theres no reason why you should be this successful, theres no reason. [ laughter ] jimmy no, you deserve it, you deserve it, man. Do your kids look at you differently . Do they go like, wow youre captain america . No. I mean, kids are interesting, because you know, as a parent, all you want is your kids acceptance you know, all you want i dont care about anybody else, my kids are like, dad, that was a good movie. Its a good movie, you know. But my kids are so over it, like, they just they just really if its when it comes to snacks and play time, nothing else matters thats all they want to know, if the snack is good jimmy whats happening with the disney plus series any movement i know the quarantine stopped everything, right . Well, im happy to say, were not cancelled, we are on hold so were going back hopefully sometime soon and finish it up, we have very little stuff to do, but its its looking im very happy with it, we have a little bit more to go back and do, but everybody rest assured, it will come out, we are not canvassing in the business where people are like, hey, take a little break, well come back to it. That means theyre never coming back to it [ laughter ] jimmy you might as well say goodbye, youll never see that person again right, im like, man, i was captain america for all of two weeks, this sucks. How did i get fired on my day off. Jimmy thats not fair. Well, when it comes out, id love to talk to you again, and whenever you want to, you know, you have an open invitation. I love you, man, hug your family and please, i cant wait to see you in person okay stay safe. Thank you jimmy thank you so much. Bye, bud all right. Jimmy david dobrik is one of youtubes biggest stars his videos have over 7 billion views. Billion views. Thats correct heres my conversation with david dobrik jimmy david dobrik. Thank you so much for being on our show, i really appreciate it thank you for coming back to us yeah, it was a far drive. Thanks for having me jimmy i thought about you when we first started these shows from home, because i think youre great at what you do youre a youtube superstar you just do it seamlessly. And i go, oh yeah, ill do that. You know right jimmy its so much work. Its insane. I have questions, are you doing it completely on your own. I imagine when you do these theres still 35 people standing behind your webcam. Jimmy no no . Prove it oh my god. Jimmy just me, theres no one here, just me right now my one child is home schooling, the other one is on like, i think an ipad right now next to my wife whos next to my its like everyone is in a room pushed away because they know im doing interviews it feels like its to the point where youre not even posting these anywhere youre just interviewing people just because you miss it. It just looks like youre just by yourself youre just like jimmy talk to me, talk to me, anyone, i need advice, and i need i need to know what am i doing wrong . I mean, am i i mean, im okay, this was i said this right when you called me im so shocked that youre on an ipad. It says jimmys ipad, i think its really cute, its like really humble. I am i still imagine for some reason, even though youre doing it at home like i just expected like these big cameras still pointed at you in some way. Jimmy you know, its funny because i was like, you know, i should call you. Because i want to know what camera should i get . Theres a logitec thing, i should do it on a laptop, right . Yeah. I think a laptop or like a a desktop is definitely better. Jimmy then i cant just i cant move around and be like, the best parts of the interview is when i start moving and stuff. Youre right, it is getting pretty good jimmy isnt this more fun . Yeah. Okay, yeah definitely dont get a desktop. Jimmy dont you like this version of the tonight show . Its so much freer yeah. Yeah, i dont know i dont have any advice for like, shooting off a webcam. I would just say get a desk did you go like, did you go what did you do . What did you do to prepare for this you go to best buy what happened . Jimmy i went to a pc richards, like a best buy, and i bought a tripod that holds a phone. Like you went in there yourself or an assistant . Jimmy yeah you went in there . Jimmy yeah, i drove i drove my truck to the pc richards, im like you went into the store, and you told the employee there like, hey, its me jimmy, i have a late night show and i need you to help me how to continue it. Jimmy i just kind of went around everybody and just kind of acted like i knew where i was and what i was doing and what aisle im like i do that in like Hardware Stores too, because clearly i dont know they could just tell i have a vibe coming off me when i go like i get the can i help you vibe no matter what store im in. They go like, how are you doing, can i help you . I go, yeah i look like that, right . You look like you need help. But i try to act, i go, i know i got to get the wrench for the thing. And i get then two hours later, i leave with the tripod and i feel good about myself sure. Jimmy but then, you know, its funny, is that i saw something when we were talking i said, would you ever want to do a a show like this . And you said, yeah. I actually would i think id be good at this type of show it would be amazing. Yeah i go and we were talking about that and then i saw this headline in the wall street journal that said, david dobrik is this generations, gen zs, jimmy fallon. I go i know. Im sorry. Jimmy i feel like im my generations david dobrik. Shut up. Jimmy and thats whats happening. We freaky fridayd that moment that means a lot. And im not showing it. But im probably going to freak out about it and text my parents you said that. Jimmy you stopped making videos during this quarantine, except for one, which i want to get into but what was behind the decision there . I knew i could make the videos that i wanted to. Like, a lot of my videos like, involve like, traveling or going out, especially a lot of random people. Like interacting with strangers is like such a big part of my videos. And i didnt want to water down the videos and like, do them in my home because i actually i actually used i used you as an example because i was like, jimmy fallon has, he can do stuff at home. Because he has a studio to bounce back to and people will know when its back to regular jimmy. But i feel like if i start making Youtube Videos at home, and then slowly start inching out of my house, and like quarantines kind of over and im like out and about, people arent going to know, like when is the regular david coming back and when are we done with like, this different kind of david, right . Jimmy right. So its like, id rather just completely quit and wait until i could make the videos that i want to be making completely i actually set like a goal for myself theres a bar down the street that we always go to and i said, once its reopened at full capacity, i will start making videos again. Jimmy there you go thats the goal, you have to have goals can i tell you about the one video you have done since being in quarantine . Sure. Jimmy you did a Youtube Video and you basically gave out you basically gave out your phone number. Right, yeah and its really great, because i had around 350,000 people text me. Which was nuts, and the best part about it, is we could in the app, we could choose where the numbers are coming from so i could go like, okay, im in Orange County today lets see who needs help in Orange County. So i just single out people in Orange County, and then i would single out, like mortgage. So i would see all the people that need help with their mortgage so thered be like a list of people and theyd send us their address. And yeah, in the video, we gave out ipads, playstations, we paid for a bunch of peoples rent and then we gave out a couple of cars and that was based on text from everybody like, texting in jimmy thats pretty amazing. Its unbelievable to watch, if anyone hasnt seen it, i invite everyone to check it out the one thing i notice is at the end, you cant hug these people, because were in quarantine i couldnt touch anybody. Which was just hard for me jimmy yeah, i know its such a bizarre thing giving to somebody, and like not being able to like have that interaction it was so bizarre, and it was like, people would start crying, and id just be in the car. And id be like, okay, i got to go now it was a very weird, weird interaction. But it was really fun. Jimmy it was nice of you to do that. Thanks. Its so fun. Jimmy i know, also, know that youve been going to a few black lives matter protests. Right, right, yeah. Jimmy and you gave 50,000 sure, yeah. Jimmy thats amazing thats not a thats not a a drop in the bucket thats a lot of money. I went to the first protest i went to was in santa monica, and i felt like i had a pretty good idea of what to expect. And it was just like i felt like i was hit by a train when i was there. It was its so eye opening to see people. Like, you know, you read and hear things on twitter and like, you know, on the news. But to be there in person, and to experience like how angry and fed up and over people are with things not changing is a completely different thing and it was like and it was inspiring to me, to like, you know, want to get involved, as cheesy as that sounds. Yeah, it was inspiring to see like, oh my god, these people. Like a lot of these people need a voice, and a lot of them are finally being heard. And thats why i felt like it was my job to get involved in some way, whether its educating myself or amplifying other peoples voices that arent being heard, i dont know jimmy it was i thought it was great that you were doing that, and i always theres going to be some people that are like, hey, why are you getting so political . Right yeah, no, i definitely got that too, but its not. Its not i dont like getting political. This isnt this isnt political, its moral, right like you shouldnt have to say racism is bad. Like, that shouldnt be a thing that i have to like, say at this time. I feel like that should be a a pretty obvious thing but yeah, its a complete moral issue that is way over due for some change. Jimmy i think its youtubers, influencers are actually using social media, i think, in a real positive way. Would you agree . Thats the best part about like all the protests today, is that theyre powered by social media. I think will smith said this, i could be wrong but he said Something Like something along the lines of like, racism isnt new, its just being filmed, or Something Like that. Basically saying that like, now people are recording and now everyone sees what black people have been going through for the past, you know, x amount of years. And i think thats the best way to put it, my friend scott said it the best. Hes like, if you dont have any words to say, but you chose to agree with somebody, or you like, you dont know how to put it into your own perspective, amplify someone elses voice that you agree with.
