Lots of people are working from home. This man is running his firm from his living room with help from his son. A growing number of people have said they want to work from home even when this is over. A recent survey of ceos found 71 of them willing to let employees work from home in the future. I think thats probably expected. Its a bigger number than i thought but the trend is wellknown. Its interesting is what they will do to commercial real estate. 66 of ceos may downsize or get rid of their offices all together. This woman is working from home and is ceo from her group. She will design whether her employees get to do that. Good morning. Lets start with you. Are you going to continue to allow your employees to work from home . Good morning. Yes, i am. We decided that this is actually working quite well. Many ceos are finding. Marissa at yahoo said it seems like a century ago but it was 2013 that people shouldnt work from home. She said at the time, speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need yahoo to be one and that starts with being physically together. Was she wrong about that . I think 100 . In our survey its a surprising thing that i found was that 76 of the respondents said productivity stayed the same or improved. People rose to the occasion, were breaking myths we had about the importance of being in the same space together. I say one data point that said 60 of ceos says working remotely had zero negative impact on productivity. On the flip side, 40 did see some sort of impact on productivity. Yes. Yes. Im sure thats the case, depending on the industry you are in as well and the way that people are being managed makes a big difference. I mention 66 of ceos are thinking about closing or downsizing their offices. That would have a huge affect on city centers, San Francisco, manhattan. It would have a huge affect on commercial real estate. Yeah. Definitely. There seems to be a flight to quality of living right now. Employees will choose where they want to live. Second and third tier cities will become more interesting. Suburbs i think lots of ceos are telling me that people are deciding to make moves for this year because most of the companies are saying, you can work from home for the rest of year. It seems to me its a permanent trend. There will be more migration to other parts of the country and possibly around the world. Working from home is actually a misnomer because its work from anywhere. The coffee shop, paris, the beach. Right. One of the things that Drew Companies to San Francisco was it was undeniable this is where the talent is. But the talent can be anywhere. I have spoken to other ceos about this. If the talent can be anywhere, then the company can be anywhere. Totally. Yes. It opens up the labor pool. It has economies of scale as some of the areas arent going to have the same cost of living. Compensation will go down. I think it does improve the way the quality of work and the quality of life. Imagine what you could do with a company if you are not paying San Francisco commercial real estate rent and you have reduced some salaries or maybe the new employees because they arent living in a costly city like San Francisco, like manhattan. All of a sudden, you have a lot of extra money that could go into research and development and product development. Yes. Absolutely. I think the cost savings that companies are going to realize this will allow them to make some investments. Ceos are in a tough position having to decide where to make cuts, improve efficiency, make hard decisions as they are thinking about opportunities to pivot and jump on investments that maybe come available as other Companies Fall around them. The ones with the liquidity, the ones with the bold vision of how they want to move forward and willingness to make those changes may have some more cash and opportunity to do Something Different that will make them leap ahead in ways that wouldnt have happened before this crisis. You gathered statistics from all of the ceos. You also talked to them personally. What sort of things are they telling you . Most of them are telling me that things are going pretty well. I have been speaking mainly to the tech community. So i have to make that context clear. I think the leadership strength and weaknesses are getting magnified in the crisis. The people the ceos and leaders that are connected to their people, that have built great trust in their system are reaping the benefits of that. Some examples of things that proactive leaders are doing, some ceos are conducting one on ones with hundreds of employees. They are making the time to get to know their work force, what theirrn about. Thats giving them a close sense of connection, which is ironic. Some of the town halls are more quality as they are improving ways to allow employees to ask hard questions. I think the new leader is a very balanced human. The ability to manage paradox, is it profits or people . Its profit and people. That requires deep empathy and ability to connect and understand as well as decisiveness. The coronavirus has been very difficult for the elderly, very hard on them from a health standpoint. On young people, its been economically very difficult. Studies show that young people who come up in the age during a recession or even worse a depression sometimes never quite catch up economically in success, which is why we were delighted to hear about ebay still recruiting college interns. Can you imagine an internship in the middle of a pandemic . These are pictures of the new crop of interns as they received their welcome package from the company. The companys head Recruiter Joins me remotely. Cindy is director of University Recruiting and programs at ebay. Thanks for being with us. To be clear, the interns are not at ebay. They are at home . Correct. All of our staff at ebay are currently working from home, given the current shelter in place orders. Thats got to be enormously challenging. Interns want to be shown things. They need to kind of get a lay of the land and understand the company. Here it is, probably just at home or in the basement. I can only imagine, scott. For us it is extremely challenging from that perspective. With that said, it was pretty easy for us to pivot to a virtual format because ultimately for ebay, the interns that we hire offer valuable insights into the millennial market. For us, were hoping that they provide us some Impactful Solutions that hopefully one day ebay can implement onto the platform. Its interesting you bring that up. I was going to ask in a little bit about that generation gap. What sort of things are the young generation teaching ebay . We at ebay dont call them young, we call them early in career talent. Its a Strategic Initiative to help our organization grow. Our program has always been focused on providing meaningful, tangible experience for both the students and the hiring managers responsible for the summer interns over a short period of time. Doing this virtually give us an opportunity to be creative in how we continue to stimulate and connect with interns virtually, behind the screen, also constantly thinking about screen fatigue. Sure. I would imagine so. Here is my question about the generation gap. Ebay was created in 1995. Many of your interns were not created in 1995. Ebay has been around for them forever. Its something that honestly i think their parents use more than they do. As you recruit on college level, how do you make ebay cool . You may think ebay is cool. Im not positive college kids do. I do think ebay is cool. At the core of it, its around our purpose. We are around because we provide Economic Opportunity for all. That is a message we try to share with our interns by giving them a couple of different viewpoints of the inside of ebay. They will have an opportunity to connect with leaders in an ask me anything format. Really showing the true th authenticity of ebay. We get them to network virtually, learn about the culture at ebay. Get them connects with our top sellers and why our sellers, our customers say ebay is important to them and the different we are making to them today and then hopefully in the future as well. Our goal as the end of the day is that the interns understand who we are, how we might be different than some of the other ecommerce markets out there and then them wanting to work for us and help us develop that next level of our platform. As you recruit at colleges i dont mean just internships but Job Opportunities as well as ebay is out there recruiting this is very important to parents. How much importance do you put on the brand name of the college, harvard versus San Francisco state . At the end of the day, we are looking for the best, the brightest, the most Diverse Talent in any of the roles we are looking for. While we do have Strategic Initiatives at a variety of universities and colleges across the united states, at the end of the day its what the student brings to the table, their passion, their desire, the skill sets they have learned over their academic career and how they might help us down the road. You have been a recruiter for a number of years. You were at adobe. You have been at amazon as well. Talk to me about how college kids have changed over the years. You have seen a generation of college kids. Certainly different than when i went to college, i think. I like that you are not throwing me in the same category, scott. With that said, the students these days, the drive and the passion and ultimately the curiosity that they present, why wouldnt we go after them . They are going to have purchasing power, the majority of the purchasing power over the next couple of years. With that, we could use to learn a lot from them on how we might continue to pave ebays path ap and sellers out there. Talking about working from home and you have interns who are Video Conferencing in, i would assume in the past the requirement was that the intern come to the ebay office and headquarters of san jose. But now you could be an intern for ebay and be in the woods in maine. You sure can. You could be anywhere in the united states. We really have interns spread all across the u. S. , similar to where our employees are currently. Its one of those things that we focus on heavily as a program in terms of making sure that were staying connected, making sure we are mindful of time differences and time zones. Ultimately, making sure that the manager is connecting with the intern more often than not so that theres that connection even though we might be in those woods out in maine. It does that but it has huge success both in the market and on the stock market by providing chips for Autonomous Cars and Super Computers. In fact, nvidias chips are doing calculations in Super Computers that scientists need to develop a vaccine for coronavirus. I am going to challenge my next guest with what is fundamentally a simple question but a difficult answer. Kimberly powell is the vicepresident of health care there. I think we are aware Super Computers are used to develop vaccines or simulate atomic bomb blasts. Whats happening in the chip that the chip is able to go find a cure or a vaccine . Scott, thanks for having me. Its a pleasure to be here. If you think about Drug Discovery and vaccine discovery, what were trying to do is find a chemical compound that can attack a protein to prevent infection from happening. We typically do that in wet labs. The pharmaceutical Companies Take five, sometimes ten years to discover these things. What Super Computers can do by applying Artificial Intelligence and simulation is we can create a time machine and predict which chemical compounds are going to bind to and prevent, lets say, the Novel Coronavirus spike protein from infecting a cell. Its been programmed to understand what compounds are and then can simulate those compounds in the various combinations . Thats right. Its called virtual of lets sa billion chemical compounds that could be potential targets to inhibit the proteins. In wet Lab Experiments you might be on the order of thousands you would screen. With Super Computers can look at the entire space and achieve that in days rather than what would otherwise take many, many years. They use techniques like Artificial Intelligence, accelerated computing called molecular dynamic simulation. These are complex calculations. They are able to do it on a huge amount of data against all of the chemical compounds that we know of today. I mentioned off the top that Scientists Use Super Computers to simulate atomic blasts. Where they do that, theres a super computer running your chips looking at the coronavirus itself. Its the fastest in the world. Thats right. The researchers at Oak Ridge National lab are pushing the limit on covid discovery in every shape and form. The white house and the office of science and Technology Programs kicked off a High Performance computing covid19 consortium. Theres over 50 or 60 projects that are largely working on accelerating vaccine and Drug Discovery. At oak ridge, the researchers are doing just as i described, using the entire super computer, over 20,000 chips to run these virtual screenings of 2 billion compounds in a matter of 24 hours. In the coronavirus, when speed is your enemy, these Super Computers are that time machine that will allow us to discover things a lot faster. Its my understanding that scientists who dont have access to that super computer, which they could link to remotely, but who dont are also using nvidia chips on their own. They are that powerful they can be used in leb tabs to do a lot simulation. Super Computers Come in all shapes and sizes. Literally, small Super Computers that are the size of your phone that are going inside of disinfecting robots that will malls in the near future. They come in server size that anyone can stick in their data center. Academic laboratories all over the world have nvidia that they can run simulations on. Public Cloud Companies have the platform inside where the applications can also run. These applications on our single one architecture platform can run at all scale, depending on the problem. We have a tremendous platform for everyone to get involved in the fight. Lastly, once we have coronavirus figured out, one of the things we were excited about until we got distracted by a pandemic was personalized medicine. Every single patient was treated in a different way as opposed to that one size fits all, here is a bottle of pills that have generally worked with a generally large size of the population. Computing power is behind that as well. Thats absolutely right. I see this unfortunate tragic pandemic as an opportunity to accelerate our journey to personalized medicine. What were doing with Super Computers and these largescale complications is we are creating the defense platform for future infectious disease, but were laying down a blueprint of how we can accelerate the ability to personalize medicine. All of the work that were doing now is an investment into this journey of personalized medicine. Today we can generate more biomedical data than ever before. We can do whole sequences in 20 minutes. We can simulate and create a 3d structure of proteins like the coronavirus protein in a matter of days. These are terabytes of data we can bring to bear with Artificial Intelligence, simulation, Super Computers so we can find and make personalized medicine a tool for all clinicians out there and patients like us to benefit. Whats in the future in what t fact that we cana about us as individuals now, our genome, our medical imaging data, Electronic Health record data, social data, computers and Artificial Intelligence are going to allow us to bring that together and get a complete virtual picture of us as humans. Then we can use the Super Computers to go out and search across all of the different therapies, all the different techniques that we can use to solve individual health problems. That kind of data consumption is impossible for any human. Computers are going to augment our clinicians, bring that together and present it in a way that they can make more informed decisions on the patient journey.
