Reporter the peaceful protesting continued today at city hall, now that the occur f curfew will be lifted after tonight, many hope confrontation also be reduced. The mayor plans to call for a reevaluation of police tactics, especially the use of rubber bullets. We have to be open to hard questions about is this the best way to ensure people can stay safe. Reporter the police chief says hes open to that. Im sure every major city will be looking at the same thing. So thats something well definitely be looking at. Reporter niko says he understands why police have to resort to tough methods, especially in stopping potential looters. But he adds, its time to scale down. You might be seeing some smoke in the Fairfield Area, a brush fire is burning homes forcing the evacuation of streets. Theres an Evacuation Center that just opened up. Lets check in with our reporter. Laura, what do you see . Reporter a frightening scene out here. Take a look behind me. I am near downtown sasun, and the flames are heading right to the homes. When i was driving here, i could seeminutes, ive seen firefighters aggressively tackle thing fire. Ive seen two water drops by helicopters, an airplane dropping retardant on the fire, and firefighters are not stopping. Dozens of people have pulled over to watch what is going on, and as raj said earlier, there are reports that two homes have been damaged by the fire. The conditions are not good out here. It is hot, it is dry, and it is windy. And all of this is creating a big challenge for firefighters. Two areas have been evacuated as you mentioned. Elmwood and maple. The fire started in the marsh area off of kellogg corrostreet. People are being asked to avoid that area and the boat launching area. Well be out here, keeping our eye on the fire, getting more information. And well bring it to you as soon as we get it. Back to you, raj and janelle. Thank you, laura. Fire danger and potentially triple digit deadly heat in parts of the bay area. This is a live look at the traffic cam. Lets bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Jeff, a lot happening at this hour. What are you seeing, not only where the fire is but across the region . Yeah, working that information right now, you guys, from my computer just off screen. In the vicinity of that fire, temperatures are in the upper 90s, right around 98 degrees. Humidity down around 20 . Wind right now, 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour, coming out of the west. That would be pushing that smoke off towards fairfield as we mentioned. Weve been talking about kellogg street quite a bit, and some areas that could be under evacuations right around civic center boulevard, almond street. These are locations right across the area. If you can smell smoke, be prepared to leave with everything as dry as it is, you dont want to risk it. So winds right now generally 5 to 15. I have seen isolated gusts up to 20. I dont expect it much gustier tonight. That will help firefighters. Lets go ahead and move it on to the heat story. You can see we did get up to 100 to 103 in concord today. Now, heat warning is in effect here for the northeast and the south bay until 9 00 p. M. Tonight. But the good news, not only for the firefighters fighting for that fire, but for everyone in the bay area, we will start to see things cool down. Mild tonight, but by tomorrow morning, theres going to be a large more 60s to start and we should be out of the 100s. So temperature relief on the way. Another update and closer look at that fire location coming up. Thank you, jeff. Up next here at 6 00, back in action, but not on the court. Steph curry and Klay Thompson on the streets of oakland today marching. A warning against tear gas, using it during this pandemic. Where doctors say the negative impact it may have in the fight against the virus. We continue to follow a standoff in oakland thats been going on for nearly 13 hours now. A man is reportedly holding his two Young Children hostage inside a home on the east side of the city on harman. This started around 5 30 this morning. An officer says he was on patrol and a man started shooting at the officer. The officer was not hurt, then the standoff began. The mans wife was able to get out of the house. Police believe the man is armed with a rifle and a hand gun. Oakland police have negotiators out there on the scene trying to work on a peaceful resolution. Another live look of the protests in San Francisco. Several thousand people, it almost looks like in years past a giants victory read with so many people there. This is the protest that started we talked about at the beginning of this news cast. Started at Mission High School, marched towards the substation there on valencia. And now thousands of people are marching towards city hall in San Francisco. This peaceful protest organized in part by students at Mission High School, and there you can see the mass of people down below. This is stretching several blocks. In fact, maybe even a mile here of people marching from the Mission District towards city hall. So obviously traffic wise, whether its foot traffic or car traffic in the city, very congested right now because of these thousands of people marching there toward city hall. Across the bay now, two years ago, almost to the day, steph curry and Klay Thompson walked near lake merritt for the championship parade. Today, they were back, but the circumstances obviously much different. The warriors among the many peacefully marching through the streets of oakland. You can see stef there and his wife. Melissa colorado is with us. Protests and curfews, those are the issues this evening. Reporter those are the two issues that are going on inevitably come head to head tonight. Since we last spoke, raj, theres a lot more activity here in downtown oakland. You can see some of the demonstrators here that have gathered with their facemasks on, they have their homemade signs with them. I have seen individuals distribute supplies, hand out water, because they are expecting a big crowd here tonight. And the start time of tonights demonstration is important here. 8 05 p. M. , five minutes after Alameda Countys curfew. So the question is going to be how exactly will police enforce tonights 8 00 p. M. Curfew . 6 the entire city is out, black, white, red, brown, it doesnt matter. Old people, young people. Reporter as well as face people. Steph curry with his wife and teammates Klay Thompson and kevon looney, joined the large crowd of peaceful demonstrators who marched around lake merritt to denounce Police Brutality and demand justice for george floyd. Players declined interviews, letting their presence speak for itself. No one is here for the camera. It tells us that people really care. It tells us that people know that the cause matters. And that people are tired. Reporter a little over a mile away i just want everyone to be treated equally. Reporter well over 100 Kaiser Permanente employees spent their lunch break taking a fee for george floyd. Even though theyve seen the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, they agree racism is a virus America Needs to eradicate. Whats happening to black and brown people in our communities, that is also a pandemic. And thats a Huge Public Health problem. Reporter tonight, another demonstration in downtown oakland is set for 8 05 p. M. We not allow Alameda County 8 00 p. M. Curfew to suppress their voices. Police say it helps them focus on catching the looters and other criminals. If you do not respect our lives and our ability to speak out about the things that are important to us and critical to us, like our lives, then we will not respect your curfew. Reporter back out here live, looking at these three young ladies, handing out supplies to demonstrators, including water. We know we are going through a coronavirus pandemic in the middle of all and the topic thats becoming a hot topic here in oakland is the use of tear gas. Three City Council Members have sent a letter to mayor libby shaft urging her to ban the use of tear gas, because covid19 is a respiratory illness, and they fear its going to make the covid19 pandemic problem a whole lot worst in oakland. Melissa colorado, nbc bay area news. Thank you so much. As protesters take to the streets for another day around the bay area, doctors want people to participate safely if they can during this pandemic. This virus is still spreading and taking lives. Joining us live is dr. Peter chin hall from ucsf. Good evening. Thanks for joining us. Lots of demonstrations every day around the country. Do you think well see a spike in cases of covid19 because of this . I think its inevitable we will see a little spike. Hopefully its not a surge. What is the best way to protest safely . We have seen some people without masks, but what would you recommend . Because theyre going to continue. The more people that wear masks the better it is. An alternate to masks is face shields. You can wipe them down, you can see peoples faces. Theyre sort of an alternate to masks. But as many people protect their nose and mouths as possible the better. Im sure people shouting and chanting doesnt help either. Yes, the more you shout, the more you cough, youll protect the virus potentially further. And then you have duration of exposure. People are there for a few hours with each other, so that multiplies the risk with something that might be a small transmission. Youve got an online petition, because youre all for the demonstrations, but what is the petition about . Its about asking Law Enforcement to be as safe and humane as possible regarding covid19, meaning not using tear gas, which will decrease coughing and transmission. And for police and Law Enforcement to wear facemasks and then to question people they need to outside rather than inside. Why should we not use tear gas . Two reasons. One is it reduces coughing, and coughing spreads virus from people who may be asymptomatic. And people that are negative, youll be rubbing your eyes and mouth. You can wash your hands easily when youre on the streets. Doctor, we look forward and well take a look at that petition and thanks for joining us today. Thanks so much, janelle. Thanks so much, doctor. Lets take youid now to look at this beautiful shot of the golden gate bridge. A warm day across the day. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. A lot of us enjoying the heat, but its also dangerous to a certain degree. It really is. As we have been talking about, the fire danger would be increasing today. While we dont know what started this fire, we have that it looks like firefighters are starting to get a handle on it. But we had pictures earlier in the show. I wanted to start off with that and give people a fix on where this fire is, and you can see theres fairfield on the map. Right now, 99 degrees. Winds out of the southwest at 17. Gusts anywhere from 15 to about 20 Miles Per Hour. That humidity dangerously low at 19 . So as we go in closer, weve heard theres been some ev evacuations on kellogg street right around the fire location. You can see kellogg street right here. I think the way the wind is blowing, people over towards harbor park drive, whispering bay lane, Marina Boulevard may need to watch out for some embers. You might be asked to evacuate, as well. As all of this smoke would be blowing towards the Fairfield Area. Well have more information on nbcbayarea. Com and also our twitter pages. I just wanted to get you a look at that. As we get you back out here to the bay area weather, temperatures are way above average. Normally at 70 in santa rosa. We did get up as high as 103 in concord. The good news as we move through tomorrow, cooler with plenty of 60s. By the afternoon, not nearly as hot. Instead of low 100s, there will be some 90s. Well talk about our bay area rain chance this weekend. Ill see you in about 25 minutes with that. Okay. See you shortly, jeff. Up next at 6 00, shopping inside of your favorite store or getting your car washed. Both are now allowed in contra costa county. Well tell you what other restrictions have been lifted. Z3wvnz z1s6z y3wvny y1s6y okay. Here is a look at the latest numbers. We want to show you this map. 14,500 cases in the bay area. Alameda county still has the most at 3,500. Santa chaira county with 2,800. And in the last 24 hours, Alameda County adding 31 new cases. San francisco, 26. Getting back to our next normal, another step towards that today in contra costa county, you can step inside your favorite retailer again and shop, actually indoors in that store. Also, some socalled low contact businesses, like dog groomers were also allowed to reopen today. We caught up with some of the recently done dogs at walnut creeks hound lounge. Housekeeping, car washes, child care, and childrens camps reopening today. Officials say theyre trying to do this with the health of people in mind. Nail salons and barbershops, things like that, will happen in a more subsequent reopening. Those are higher risk activities. And thats a big one, when will the nail salons reopen . Religious services inperson can start june 15th. No opening date yet for swimming pools, outdoor dining, or hair and nail salons. Okay. Still to come, were still watching a huge demonstration and march in San Francisco. Live pictures from sky ranger where you can see a line of police that appears to be blocking some demonstrators from getting on to the freeway. This started at Mission High School. 10,000 strong now. Its now on the move. We saw toward city hall, but it looks like theyre near the 80 onramp toward the bay ridge. Also watching that fire weve been talking about, already burned two homes. This is happening in the Fairfield Area near highway 12. You can see that white smoke. But above that, thick plumes of back smoke. Back in a moment. Right now at 6 30, we continue to follow our breaking news. Thousands of demonstrators making their way through the streets of San Francisco. They started at Mission High School at around 4 00 p. M. They tapacked the city streets r blocks in multiple directions. You can see it goes several blocks, thousands of people, maybe close to 10,000 people. They marched towards the Mission Street substation of sfpd. Right now they are on bryant street, at least a big chunk of them are, where they go under 101. You can see the freeway there. Still dont know their plans, maybe toward the hall of justice. Also at 6 30, more information about george floyd. He had coronavirus according to the autopsy report. The autopsy will be released tonight. He tested positive on april 3rd. Cheers filled the air in minneapolis today as news spread that all four former Police Officers at the scene, when george floyd died, have been charged now. The murder charge against Derek Chauvin has been elevated to Second Degree murder. The other three officers, who did nothing to stop chauvin, are now charged with aiding and abetting murder. These are the mugshots of those three former Police Officers. The family has never wavered. They want these officers to be held to the full extent of the law. If only Second Degree is what attorney general ellison thinks he can prove, then the family is relieved of that. They want the most. Tomorrow, the first of four funerals will be held for floyd. In washington, d. C. , speaker of the house nancy pelosi visited with protesters near the capitol today. At one point, she pushed back a barricade to talk with the peaceful protesters. She expressed her gratitude to the people and called on President Trump to be the healer in chief. We want to go back to the streets of San Francisco, where you can see thousands of people are protesting. Theyve been doing this, hold thing large demonstration since 4 00 this afternoon. Theyre now going under 101 where it heads across the bay bridge. Its spanning for blocks. It started with a large group at Mission High School and neighboring neighbor ing coloris deloris park. The crowd is estimated to be over 10,000 now. Now it appears they are walking toward San Francisco city hall. But you can see police on the freeway to prevent protesters for getting on to the bay bridge. This is by far the biggest demonstration we have seen, not only today but all week. Every day, at least half a dozen protests around the bay area marching for george floyd. Protests today happened in hayward. The city of san mateo, and east palo alto. If you want to see and hear it, go to one of these peaceful marches. The eyes and voices of the people marching will let you know the problems of injustice around this country and in the bay area. Among those voices, a wellknown radio host, the morning deejay Durrell Coleman joins us now from oakland. Hes known on the radio as d. C. Nice to have you on the program with us. As you see these protests, whether in San Francisco or oakland, what emotions do they elicit there . First of all, the emotions are frustration, theyre anger. Those are my feelings. Those are the feelings of the folks who have been outside, because we have seen this too many times. Time and time again, you know, a black person losing their life unnecessarily by the hands of Police Officers. A lot of people asking why the violence, why the rioting. What is your answer to them . Umm, in terms of violence and the rioting, a couple of different things. I think there are some bad actors that are jumping into the groups inciting some of these things. I saw folks tearing down the boards that were in front of the chase bank, and these people didnt look like, you know, they didnt look or feel like they were supposed to be part of that crowd or they came there for peace. They seemed like they came there with an intention to incite violence. And there are other people who live in these communities are saying, im frustrated because every time i go to a peaceful march or a protest, you know, certain things respect happening. I dont advocate for any of this violence or looting or anything thats happening. But people are frustrated and angry. What conversations are you having, whether with your white friends or your africanamerican friends, what conversations at the dinner table or on skype are you having now . One of somebody who i hold v dear to my heart is my brother. The conversation i began to have with him with, he reached out and said hey, man, im sorry for what youre going through and things need to change. I said yes, they do need to change. As much as i appreciate you, i want you to have that conversation at the dinner table with your friends and family when im not there, you know . When your grandpa is there, your aunts or uncles who understand different things, have that conversation with them and explain to them why this is so important. Last question. We both grew up here in the bay area. Do you think it will change in the bay area before it does in other parts of the country . I think that we have a systemic issue thats lasted for a very long time in the bay area and other parts of the country. So i cant say anything is going to change here faster than it changes with the pace of our demands as a people. Durrell coleman, thank you for your time and perspective. Thanks, raj. Still to come, well take you back to sasun city where theres a large brush fire thats damaged two homes. Firefighters are on the scene. Thats right after the break. The weathers perfect. Family is all together and we switched to geico; saved money on our boat insurance. How could it get any better than this . Dad, i just caught a goldfish theres no goldfish in this lake. Whoa its pure gold. Were gonna be rich. Were gonna be rich it only gets better when you switch and save with geico. We want to get back to our breaking news. Homes and brush on fire just off of highway 12. Lets go back to our reporter at the scene. Laura . Reporter janelle, ive been out here for half an hour. Im in downtown sasun. We have seen some white smoke, but for the most part, we have seen a lot of black smoke and flames. You can see that black smoke billowing for miles. The flames seem to be heading west after destroying some homes. Lets take a look at some video. We just got an update that at least five structures have been destroyed. Their likely homes and seven more structures damaged. Two areas have been evacuated. Elmwood and maple. No word of any other evacuations. Again, at last count, there are five structures that are destroyed, likely homes and at least seven more damaged. We will be out here gathering information and bring it to you as soon as we get it. Back to you. Those flames do look ominous behind laura there. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. You saw that smoke and wind direction. It seems to be towards that jelly belly factory there on high bay area 80. What do you have have . For the moek folks out ther black smoke is headed towards fairfield, winds out of the southwest, pushing most of that black smoke towards fairfield. Well have a closer look when we come back. Among the several breaking news stories were following at this hour, we have an update on whats happening in oakland. That Police Standoff with an armed man has ended peacefully after 13 hours. Dangerous levels of heat throughout the bay area that we certainly have experienced today. I did want to get you out to that breaking news map that we have been tracking the fire in sasun city. This is where there is a lot of black smoke. So once again, this definitely would be pushing that smoke certainly into fairfield, also harbor park drive. Youre also looking at some of that smoke towards freedom and Marina Boulevard. So anyone in the vicinity of this, where you can see the streets on this map could be asked to evacuate due to that smoke. Right now, we have a temperature of 99 degrees.
