[ laughter and applause so President Trump yesterday, praised chicago cubs coowner Todd Ricketts appointment as the rncs new finance chairman, calling him a great addition yeah, great if you want to win one election every 108 years [ laughter and applause republican chair of the house intelligence committee, devin nunes, yesterday claimed the changes made to a controversial memo about the fbi before he sent it to the white house were minor grammatical edits. Thats right he had to make the grammar worse so trump could read it [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause take these commas out. [ laughter ] President Trump today said that senator orrin hatch called him the greatest president in the history of our country i guess hatch is still mad at Abraham Lincoln for stealing his girlfriend in middle school. Before we get to all of that, republicans have concocted an elaborate fantasy about a conspiracy deep within the fbi to destroy donald trump, and that imagined conspiracy is now coming to a head with the imminent release of a secret gop memo for more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause seth amid a looming showdown with his own fbi director, and members of congress, trump met today with republicans in West Virginia he began by listing off republicans in attendance, but watch as he reads Senate Majority whip john cornyns name then forgets he read it, and then complains that they forgot to include it. Hi, im donald hi, donald im john whos donald [ laughter ] trump, of course, was there to crow about his state of the union address, and bask in the adoration of his fellow republicans. Trump even suggested that after a slow first few months in office hes gone above, and beyond what he promised voters on the campaign trail. I was there four months, you know this paul, and they were saying he didnt fulfill a promise, but now we fulfilled far more promises than we promised [ laughter ] and theyre having a hard time with that. We have seriously fulfilled promise, i call it promises plus [ laughter ] seth he refers to his accomplishments like theyre choices at a gas station [ laughter ] we have promises, promises plus and promises unleaded, just dont get them near a match. [ cheers and applause of course, while he was giving that speech, trump probably had the ongoing russia investigation on his mind. Ever agree to sit down with special Counsel Robert Mueller but if he does, mueller is likely to ask him about his repeated attempts to interfere with the investigation just to name a few, he demanded a loyalty oath from fbi director james comey, then when he fired comey, he asked comeys temporary successor Andrew Mccabe who he voted for and then yesterday we learned that he also tried to ask Deputy Attorney general rod rosenstein, who directly oversees mueller in the russia investigation, if rosenstein was on trumps side cnn is breaking right now news about a meeting in december between President Trump, and the Deputy Attorney general, rod rosenstein, the Justice Department official supervising the mueller probe. The president asked rosenstein where he thought the investigation of links between russians and his campaign was headed, and he went on to ask whether rosenstein was quote, on my team. Seth oh, my god. Trump is so obvious. If you met trump on tinder, and messaged him hello, his first reply would be what size bed do you have [ laughter ] on top of that, we also learned yesterday that mueller is reportedly investigating the white houses shifting explanations for that Infamous Trump tower meeting. Don jr. Had with the russians during the 2016 campaign as you might recall, the trump team originally said don jr. And the russians discussed a program about the adoption of russian children a topic that is, of course, close to don jr. s heart since his brother was adopted from, transylvania [ laughter ] i think . But then emails later surfaced in which it was revealed that the meeting was explicitly about getting dirt on Hillary Clinton from the russians. The times reported that trump and his Communications Director hope hicks knew about the emails, but that hicks said the emails, quote, will never get out. Amazing, so not only did the emails get out, the comment about how the emails would never get out, got out [ laughter and applause this administration is so incompetent, they cover their tracks with bigger tracks. [ cheers and applause and yet, as more evidence comes out about trumps attempts to obstruct justice, republicans in congress are becoming more aggressive in protecting it. Today, the white house reportedly approved the release of a secret, classified memo written by house republicans, alleging wrongdoing by the fbi in its investigation of the Trump Campaign the Washington Post reported today that trump has told advisers that he believes the memo could help him convince the public that the probe is a witch hunt but even trumps own handpicked fbi director, Christopher Wray has told the white house he opposes release of the memo because it contains inaccurate information, and paints a false narrative. Nonetheless, the white house seems to be moving forward Vice President mike pence told politico, ive always believed in the publics right to know, and i stand by that principle. Oh, really, mike pence [ laughter ] youve always believed in the publics right to know in that case, will you release trumps tax returns . Okay wait [ cheers and applause will you release the white house visitor logs no, no, no ill give you another one, will you release all the russiarelated emails . [ applause ] will you release eric . [ laughter ] so what does this memo actually say . Well, the New York Times reported this week that in reality the memo shows that trumps own Justice Department approved an extension of a warrant to surveil a Trump Campaign Foreign Policy adviser named carter page. The renewal shows that the Justice Department under President Trump saw reason to believe that page was acting as a russian agent. So just how suspicious is carter page . Ill let carter page answer that were you in email chains with papadopoulos probably a few, yeah. Were you in email chains with him about russia it may have come up from time to time. Did you meet Sergey Kislyak in cleveland, did you talk to him . Im not going to deny that i talked with him. So you did talk to him . Although i will say i will say that i never met him anywhere outside of cleveland, lets just say that much the only time that you met him was in cleveland that i may have met him possibly, would it might have been in cleveland. Because if you were at work right now, you would be writing something that would already be old by the time youre on at 9 00 yes seth so im just giving you an hour off. You know there im a disorganized person. And i have bad time management and so ive always had this problem ever since i started doing work like this, where i produce stuff that doesnt make it onto the show for whatever reason, other stuff goes long or i cant end an interview on time, i have no discipline so theres always been some stuff i have to kick out but now every single day, the entire show i throw away seth yeah. Two hours before air time and have to invent a whole new one i feel like i should just come in at 8 00 seth yeah. [ laughter ] before the 9 00 show and be like, hit me now seth yeah. Hit me now im just going to adlib the whole thing. I threw away a whole show every day. Seth it is nuts. This is an unprecedented time. And it has affected not only our show, not only your show, but it actually affected your signoff the other night. Oh, god yeah, you know, there are like throughout the history of people doing news on television, there has been all these like really noble signoffs, courage, good night and good luck seth yes you know . Like people do, like, you know its been all these very serious ones and people dont necessarily try them anymore i have inadvertently developed one that i started doing without trying to. Seth uhhuh. It started when i was talking about steve bannon, the white house strategist guy you know, the grim reaper guy . Seth it already feels like a million years ago. I know. He was in congress and he wasnt answering their questions because his lawyer was advising him not to. And his lawyer was advising him not to because he was on the phone with the white house and the white house was saying, we dont want steve answering those questions. Turns out Steve Bannons lawyer is also the lawyer of the for the guy at the white house he was talking to seth so, heres your new signoff which i think i dont know i think its as good as all of them okay. Seth lets take a look having somebody on those two different sides of the story both represented by the same attorney thats weird that does it for us tonight. [ laughter ] seth thats weird. Good night yeah, sleep well [ cheers and applause seth i am sure youll im sure youll talk about this, this evening the memo we talked a little bit about the memo do you think the release of this memo, which seems inevitable at this point, do you think it will escalate the investigation into trump and russia ties, if thats even possible . Or do you think the takeaway, when we look back on this memo, will be this was a degrading of our institutions that someone in congress would basically go after the Justice Department and the fbi like this . Well, the memo isnt part of it isnt like something revealed from the investigation. The memo is part of the trump white house. And the Trump Supporters in congress trying to make the investigation go away. So this is part of their defense against the investigation. And there was a guy who was a part of the Trump Campaign, he was a foreign adviser Foreign Policy adviser to the campaign and he had been caught up in a russian spy ring in new york city in 2013. And, like, fbi counterintelligence had been involved in like breaking up the spy ring and people went to prison. And it was for real. Then he turns up on the Trump Campaign and in the middle of the Trump Campaign, he goes to russia and gives an anti u. S. proputin speech. So like the counterintelligence folks are interested in this guy. Because theyre supposed to monitor people who might be foreign agents in the United States and they got warrants to surveil him starting during the campaign and it got renewed a bunch of times including into the Trump Campaign this whole memo thing is about trying to make it a scandal that it was renewed the most recent time it was renewed. Seth yeah. And that means there should be no investigation. Its, like, no, dude you had the guy with the russian spies working on and then going to moscow and being like, i love putin. I hate america. Seth yeah. Like, of course, the fbi is going to look into him seth yeah. So theyre going to try to say that means there shouldnt be a russia investigation. And its been a very big distraction which i think is effective. But i dont think it will i dont think it will change anything on Robert Muellers todo list seth the do you think at the end, and i know im asking you to make a prediction here. Do you think when this is all over we will say, oh the bad stuff was what happened before the election, in regards to russia or the bad stuff was what happened after the election with the sort of hamfisted coverup of everything happened before . That is a very good question. I mean, i dont i think we dont yet know everything that happened before the election seth mmhmm. We know a lot more about what happened since and whats happened since the election and since trump has been in office is very, very damaging stuff i mean right now whats going on with this memo, is its a strategy to try to make the investigation go away. But its a strategy to try to make the investigation go away by trying to hurt the fbi as much as possible, by trying to impugn the integrity of senior officials at the fbi and the Justice Department by trying to make them seem like theyre evil and must be usurped. Thats something that may be helping them with this investigation. But that has a lot implications for the independent rule of law in this country. So thats part of it theres dam the obstruction of justice stuff, and the efforts to distract and hurt american institutions in the process is going to be something we have to repair as a country for generations to come. Its really damaging the other issue is whether russia is getting what they want if they did interfere in the election to help trump, i think what they wanted was relief from u. S. Sanctions on russia and the Trump Administration is giving them that now while they are in office and so if there was quid pro quo, the quo is happening and thats right now seth one last thing i want to ask you there are, of course, things that are norms that are happening. One of the norms is there is a state of the union no matter whos president. Yeah. Seth you covered that state of the union did you find in the end did you walk away and say, that was a norm. Or did you say, that was not a norm . [ laughter ] the thing for me about the state of the union is like what exactly happened in the speech what was announced seth right i feel like the big reveal for me, just emotionally as an american watching that speech, was happened one second into the state of the union when that guy came down the aisle and flung open the door and said, mr. Speaker, the president of the United States. [ laughter ] and then the door opens and donald trump is standing there [ laughter ] like, that to me was, like, oh the big reveal really its for real. This is his first state of the union. Seth yeah. And this is like a thing that only president s get to do. And there he is. And then, you hosted snl in 1999, you met will ferrell and you met adam mckay, the head writer at snl at the time and they brought this idea to you. Was it pretty much a nobrainer when you hear from guys like this that they wanted you to star in their comedy oh, my god. Are you kidding me have you seen the show seth yeah. Captain dave . Seth yeah. Its perfect the greatest role ever. Seth yeah. I mean, i just i love it seth and you get to have a mustache thats your mustache most importantly, yes seth did you base your mustache on any historic mustaches . You know, when i started to read the script, the mustache started to spontaneously grow by itself [ laughter ] seth oh, my god. Which was weird seth yeah. The mustache jumped off the page it did. It did but, i mena, you have to look at the history of mustaches who has the best mustache ever seth i mean, selleck selleck, yeah you got to start there and then you move down to Burt Reynolds seth yeah, no, thats a pretty good one. Not very far down. Hes right beneath him, yeah and then, you got to go to captain dave seth yeah. Oh, youre third all time. Im third all time. Seth im very jealous because i was hoping it was a fake mustache. But i can tell that you grew your own i could not grow my own mustache and its very heartbreaking for me because my father has a good a thick, bushy mustache. Nice. Seth and yet, i did not get that dna, but do you mind can i put a mustache on for the rest of the interview . I would love that seth great, okay [ cheers and applause couple of guys with mustaches. Seth why did you get me this i cant talk about it seth i like that you leave the house and youre, like, i need two things. Yeah, you might as well [ laughter ] seth so, anyways, you go at the cellar and it didnt go great . So, yeah. I did catch a rising star, the bitter end, and then, i was feeling myself a little bit. I did the comedy cellar. Seth mmhmm. And im up there, and its not going well seth mmhmm. How did you know well, no ones laughing seth yeah. Thats how you know. So when no one laughs and it was really crickets, they pulled me off stage seth physically. They threw me out of the comedy cellar. Seth wow wow yeah. Seth and thats a pretty you know people say how do you know its not going well, thats really how you know. Yeah. Go ahead seth okay, great, thank you. I dont quite know what all right. Do you want me to help you . Seth no, i think ive got it i think this has been intimate enough oh, nice seth that looks nice [ cheers ] i look like a sheriff in a musical. [ laughter ] yeah. Seth this is one of my i was at snl in 2012 when we did a sketch called it was a game show called Dylan Mcdermott or Dermot Mulroney. Thats right. [ cheers ] seth you have and that Dermot Mulroney plays a rival captain on the show, which is fantastic. But that was true. You guys got mistaken for each other for years. I mean, the name has been a nightmare, for 30 years. Seth 30 years. Because you guys really came on the scene at almost the exact same time. Yeah, thats right. And its been painful for many, many years as a matter of fact, when we were both at William Morris at the time, sue mengers was the biggest agent in the world at the time she said walked right up to me and she said, there can only be one [ laughter ] and i said, one what . There can only be one so she goes, you have to change your name. I was, like, oh, no so, i came up with a fantastic name of mick dermott [ laughter ] seth im glad in the end that you stood your ground on your godgiven name. Well, it is very nice that this 30year name mixup has now collided with you guys working together yeah, thats right. He finally came on the show.
