At lunch time its 71 degrees, reaching 76 by early in the afternoon, still very nice and mild today but we know that hot weather is headed our way soon. Ill talk more about that and mike gets you out the door with a look at the commute. Were looking at a smooth drive right now. Friday light. We can say that now as we look at the maps. We have seen much more traffic at least for the altamont and the trivalley over the last few weeks. Definitely no morning slowing. A smooth drive. Napa county already in phase two. And Sonoma County in the yellow is still awaiting state approval. So under the expanded phase two heres whats going to happen. And diningt open. And restaurants and schools with modified modifications can open. So here is what remains closed. Hair and nail salons, gyms and nightclubs. Santa clara becomes the last to enter phase two. Stores like these you see right here in downtown campbell will be able to reopen but with restrictions. Curbside pickup will be allowed and manufacturing can resume. For a lot of people friday means a paycheck. For a growing number of americans, it does not. Yesterday around 2 million americans were added to the unemployment rolls. Now there is a debate in washington, a live look out at washington where theres a debate about how much longer the government should give americans extended unemployment benefits. As you may know theres an extra 600 tacked on to the usual benefits. That expires in july. Some lawmakers would like to extend that saying theres no way this pandemic is over by july. Others claim that the extra 600 is actually encouraging people not to work. Not a lot of movement on the markets on thursday, but i bring it up because of select quote. The company had its stock market debut. Did well, up nearly 40 . This is not a Bay Area Company but its so worth paying attention to because you can ipo. Facebooks Mark Zuckerberg says the company will let a good portion of the company work remotely even after the pandemic is over. That could be as much as half of the company the next five to ten years. People will be paid according to their cost of living. If you live in montana, you will be paid less money at facebook for the same amount of work. This trend to Remote Working has the attention of homeowners because, after all, our home prices have shot up over the last ten years in the bay area. In large part because of demand of all the people working here and not moving to montana. This is basically the last mild day before that hot weather really starts to be felt across our inland valleys going into the weekend. The Climate Prediction Center is saying for the bay area were looking at above average temperatures. As you look at the sierra and even down to Southern California were expecting some well above average temperatures so not really good news as we go into our dry time of the year and we could see hot weather heading our way. Highs in the low 80s. We have 90s heading our way. Well have to watch those numbers closely. Mike, youve been watching the roads closely. Whats been going on this morning . Subtle changes, kari. That company canceled their kids trips due to the pandemic and offered a credit, not cash back. In annas case the company held 4,000 for a trip to spain and morocco in march that didnt happen. Our Response Teams around the country are also fielding complaints from upset ef tours customers. An ef tour spokesperson told us yesterday that a nationwide settlement will be announced today. The company is expected to begin offering rebooking and cash refunds. The Massachusetts Attorney general had been looking into ef tours cancellation. The company said we are pleased our collaboration helped identify a path forward as well as our future travelers. The smoke plume you see i thought was on treasure island. Ive just learned that chp has issued a Traffic Alert because it is on the deck heading into San Francisco just past treasure island. The smoke you see is from a car fire only blocking one lane, maybe two, but definitely a distraction. As we look at your maps it will continue to cause more slowing as folks head into San Francisco quickly building and it may result in the lights being turned on. That fire on the bay bridge is a bigger issue than we had before. Back to you. Breaking news in pakistan. This is where a passenger plane crashed into a busy neighborhood. This is as it approached the karachi airport. No one onboard that plane survived. This is video of the rescue operation in southern pakistan. The mayor there says that three homes were destroyed. Another 10 to 12 are damaged. No word yet on casualties on the ground. Opening day for retailers, at least thats what it will feel like after being on these restrictions. Reporter the signs are up the businesses are ready for Curbside Pickup they hope will boost their bottom line which has been sagging under the shelter order. We asked the owner of the therapy store chain to chat on camera. They couldnt even stop to talk. Santa clara county and with stores in different counties across the bay area which entered phase two at different times has been a complex challenge. The coowner says the shelter order forced them to get creative fast. It push us to do online sooner which we did. A lot of vendors are closed and some are coming back. We cant even buy or get our merchandise that we ordered. So our store is kind of not the store that we planned to have for spring. But we are getting more things in and we have things online. Reporter even with the online sales, sales are down 86 . The owners are floating their business and paychecks through the paycheck protection loan program. Santa clara county is the last bay area county to enter phase two but the countys Public Health officer says the curve is finally flat. Hospitalizations and icu cases are trending down and testing is ramping up with a positive rate of 1 . Positive signs like those had the governor earlier this week changing the guidelines for when counties can enter into phase two and that is the reason most california counties, 58 of them, should be able to enter phase two. Like many cities its facing dire new economic concerns tied to the pandemic. Joining us this morning is fremont mayor lily mei. Thank you for having me. I want to talk about tesla. The lawsuit was tied to the county. What about other businesses in the city take heed from what they were doing and decide, hey, im going to open up whats the plan in place to prevent that from happening . Well, this all started because the local shelter in place order was continuing without provision for major manufacturing and fremont over 900 manufacturers in manufacturing. This type of effort with the guidelines is something thats very important, and most recently updated by the county Health Department as well as other opportunities for retail. I think thats the key right now is to figure out how can we open up safely and have clear guidelines that address the needs for so many of our businesses. So many of those businesses are hurting. I know the city, you all have new financial programs to help the Small Businesses and renters. Explain who is eligible and what does that relief look like . Its on our website. We have both a care program for our residents and up to 400,000 and the details as to who is eligible, the criteria are all available on our website, and i will be happy to send you that information. Also, we have a smaller Business Community relief grant. We have 400,000 set aside for Small Businesses in chunks of 5,000 or 10,000. And is the process a long one for people to apply for and get the money . No, its not a long one. Its one were in the process of looking for applications and these are programs that would be immediately providing assistance to a much machine needed Business Community as well as residents and okay, and before we go, i want to talk about tesla. I know its a big draw to the city. How are the relations with that and how are things going . I think that weve always been working very closely with tesla and weve supported them for over tenplus years and have over 200 of their local suppliers here and most are based in fremont. And so weve always had a Good Relationship in supporting both our Large Businesses and our small to ensure they choose fremont to do the businesses that are successful. Now we dont see that anymore. You can see the upper deck getting into the city. That is moving more smoothly now. As we look at your maps you see a smooth flow of traffic getting into San Francisco. Going to mess up my map here. Getting into San Francisco without any major problems now that the lanes have been cleared, and so the problem is with the backup on the span there, they turned on the metering lights so there will still be delays out of oakland and into San Francisco. Keep that in mind. It should clear up quickly the next half hour to 40 minutes. Meanwhile, Everything Else is lighter. Were talking new normal. From the past 20 years, aaa has issued a travel forecast for this memorial day weekend because its a huge travel weekend but not this year. They are simply predicting this year a record low for this Holiday Weekend travel due to current restrictions. Bob talked about those. Remember the current normal looks like what we see in palo alto, a very clear flow. Instead of travel volume, aaa is reporting a 3 increase in call volume to take care of dead batteries.
