But, kari, its going to be a nice one out there. Yeah, usually the pools are opening and all of these things come alive and open up with what we usually welcome summer with, and we will find other ways to stay cool. We are looking at our temperature trend that will start out nice today. We still have a mild day today and we are talking about the heat. We are heading into the low 80s for parts of the south bay as well as the inland east bay, but mostly 70s across much of the bay area. I will be tracking this along with that heat up in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. Mike, hes on the phone giving us an update on what is happening with the morning commute. Yeah, but i am not driving. If i did, it would be hand free. The maps show smooth traffic, and i want to point out northbound 280 yesterday we had repairs until 8 30, 9 00, and that caused a lot of slowing. And maybe the crews in place are blocking two lanes today. We are over on the right where we expected, the Altamont Pass shows slowing right now, and its only 5 11 and its a thursday, and we are seeing slowing. Back to you. Thanks, mike. We will talk about the growing number of americans now backing out of those plans. Its 5 12 for you this morning. You are watching today in the bay. And. Lets get started. music fades in hey hi that could mean an increase byin energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or closing your shades during the day. Stay well and keep it golden. Right now at 5 14, as you get ready to head out to work in concord, we are starting out with light jacket weather but comfortable for the afternoon as we see a trend that will head into the 70s today. Still very nice. More on this in the forecast and a very hot weekend. Thats kupblicoming up in a few minutes. Good morning and good thursday to you as well. Thursday is when we get firsttime jobless claims and we will get those numbers at 5 30. Tensions growing a bit with china and that has the stock market uneasy. Secretary of state, mike pompeo, congratulated the president of taiwan on her win for reelection, and that makes china uneasy. China claims theres only one china, china and taiwan put together, and america recognizes two, and when talking to china only recognizes one, and its weird but thats how it works. Adding to the unease, President Trump seems to single out president xi in a tweet. Then theres the stock market. The second largest coffee shop chain in china. Turns out that company was faking i thi faking its coffee numbers, and now theres a bill passed to make it difficult for china to trade on our exchanges and that would cut off capital to chinese companies. Back in the bay area a lot of our funding is tied to capital, and its really important to us, and those in the investment firms that write the checks to start up an economy, and they are still writing checks to young startups and doing it over zoom. Its a big change for us. As you know we are in the people business and we are investing in intrapreneurs and their vision and a big part of that is getting to know them and as a result we are doing lots of zoom calls and reference checks and spending a lot of time still talking to these people and connecting with them and doing it on the phone and through zoom. So far so good, though. We have been making investments for those we have met through zoom and not in person, yet. And marcus and laura, you know i do a podcast about Venture Capital and it gets into the weeds of how all this works, and i bring it up because its so important to the bay area economy. They write milliondollar checks to startups that employ people, and then buy cars and furniture and coffee and lunches and things, and this is why its so important to hear they are still writing checks even now. Its great to see. You know, the innovation you see in Silicon Valley as well, and i would imagine a lot more will come out of what we are dealing with right now in the pandemic. Lets hope. Yeah. Speaking of innovation, if you are an owner of the newer version of the iphone with the facial recognition and you are wearing a mask, and i know about this personally, you have the delays with the password options, but the latest ios update has your answer. Until now the user with the mask on would have to wait for the phone to bounce away from the face id screen, and sometimes it does the rise and repeat which can delay the phone even more, and in the new update the phone will recognize the mask and go immediately to the other signin options. And then many are going to vacation despite the virus. A new travel survey found 71 of americans say they are taking vacation between now and the end of summer, and 50 say likely by the end of the year, and Top Destinations are parks, beaches and hotel and resorts. An a list actress is entering the social media challenge to keep everybody laughing during the pandemic. Lets take a look. Is that funny . Do you recognize her. And Something Else to make you smile, olympic Gold Medalist, shaun white, and while he was driving by kids he was holding up a sign asking him to join him. He decided to stop and skate with them a short time at a safe distance, of course, and he said even though the kids had masks on, and he was really happy to skate with them. You see the bandana, and they are kids, of course. Yeah, and a nice day ahead as well, and i think we will start to creep up temperature wise, kari . Yeah, still going to be fairly mild today. Just a couple degrees warmer than yesterday, and you probably wont feel too much of a difference. We start to see the temperatures ramping up as we go into the weekend. Lets get a look at where we are starting this morning. A cool and refreshing start as we take a look now in dublin and we are seeing people up and out the door feeling temperatures in the mid40s in parts of the trivalley and north bay, and we see 50s in concord and its 51 degrees in san jose. Our pollen count, still moderate. We have a little bit of everything floating through the air from tree pollen to grass pollen and weed pollen as well. Just a heads up about that so you dont forget your allergy medication before you head out the door. Our temperatures today, once again a few degrees warmer than yesterday but still nice and comfortable, feeling spring like with upper 70s in san jose, and up to 82 in antioch and 80 degrees in napa and santa rosa and San Francisco stays cool. Then as we go through our forecast, High Pressure builds and ourmpratures will build, too, especially d by memorial dy we are looking very hot weather as that High Pressure moves right overhead and our temperatures will peak on tuesday before coming down just slightly. Heres a look at our 7day forecast for the inland valleys and some of our warmest spots, we will see highs in the low 80s today and tomorrow and then mid80s on saturday, and upper 80s on sunday and then once again really hot early next week. Mike, you have been tracking the commute. What has been going on out there . 580 westbound, theres more slowing, and slowing off 205 as well, and then the arrow in the middle of the screen now, like we said, showing slowing for westbound 84, and that cut through between 580 and 680 towards sunol. That will build construction in cupertino but the slowing we saw earlier cleared up. You have two lanes southbound from wolf to lawrence. Back to you, marcus. Thanks, mike. Growing concerns over a possible second wave. Coming up next, we will talk about the number of americans who say they are fearful of what is next as the country begins to reopen. First, our team always on social distancing, and kari, this is over the weekend, they were glamping, yes, that is a tent inside karis home. You should follow her on instagram. She does nice things with her family. Its 5 23. You are watching today in the bay. These days, everyone expects you to like everything and be positive. And then a live report coming up on the new role in the fight against covid19. To wear or not wear face protection . South bay leaders set to reopen tomorrow. I am laura garcia. I am marcus washington. Lets get started with this thursday, and meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the forecast for us, and its starting out nice today, kari . Yeah, its a nice view over martinez this morning. As we watch the sun rise, the sky is clear and we will get a lot of sunshine today. Lets check out our trend for today, and we will start out with the mid50s and then warm up as we go into later today, upper 70s and low 80s expected, and in the forecast its going to get hot. I will have more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. Traffic is smooth right now, and might see more traffic up towards the level we saw on tuesday. We will see. We have slowing from the Altamont Pass and over to the right there is slowing. The second bay area county is allowing diners to return to restaurants. Bob redell is live in Solano County, and i know other businesses can loosen their restrictions as well. Reporter yes, the state gave Solano County permission yesterday to go ahead to allow Retail Stores and malls to reopen, and its just some of the kind of businesses we are talking about. Schools can reopen later in the summer and fall, and restaurants like the one downtown here in benicia, they can let diners come in and eat again as long as they are six feet apart. This was the scene in downtown joes in napa last night. There was a good crowd and enjoying the meal out for the First Time Since march. Napa is the first county to move into the reopening phase, and some restaurants say they wont reopen until this weekend and they want to make sure they follow the correct protocols. We were affected before all of this, and luckily the napa valley is a big tourist area and we are hoping to draw all that back. I am calling customers and saying we are open now, and come down and have a glass of wine with us, and we are giving discounts in the store. Reporter some of the businesses in napa, though, have to wait before reopening, that includes salons, tattoo parlors and bars. Unlike many other bay area counties, santa clara never officially ordered masks to be worn although the Health Department strongly urges it. The san jose order would be more like those in other counties, basically anytime you interact with others. Cupertino and milpitas already did the same thing. Enforcement will likely be a low priority. Ventura and san diego counties can offer more dinein and shopping options. Both have met the states requirements to accelerate the reopening process. San diego county is the second most populated county in california. This is a really interesting story this morning. San francisco wants to put its librarian and all their researching power to work to actually track coronavirus patients as well, and its something that could help lift the shelterinplace order for so many. It will take time to get all the boats up and running to meet the safety requirements. We are shooting for a june 1st opening. The mayor says they will waive fines for second homeowners to come up, but i dont think they are allowed to rent any of their units out there. People want to do traveling on memorial day to get away, but we have to remember what is going on and be safe out there. That is the key, being safe, as we are also going to have hot weather heading into the bay area. Its nice and refreshing right now. In the past, the president has not worn a mask although those around him have, and the Vice President was criticized for not wearing a mask while visiting patients in the hospital. And ford had to close down two lines, one in dearborn and one in chicago, illinois, because workers on the line had covid19 and they needed to clean that area. President trumps visit to michigan comes just 24 hours after he tweeted he might suspend federal funding to the state and nevada as well because those states are enabling vote by mail.
